Critical Need of Ammo Supply: Preventing Russia's Artillery Advantage in Ukraine - Technology Org

The war in Ukraine strongly relies on artillery and drones. Of course, other weapon systems play their part too, but artillery and unmanned aerial vehicles do a lot of work in this war. Ukraine manufactures thousands of drones on its own and they are relatively cheap. Even the tank killer drones are relatively inexpensive. But the shortage of artillery shells is a big problem.

Russia produces nearly three times more artillery shells than the United States and Europe can provide Ukraine, CNN reports, citing NATO intelligence estimates and other sources.

According to NATO intelligence, Russia produces 250,000 artillery shells per month, or about 3 million per year. Meanwhile, the United States and Europe together can annually produce only about 1.2 million shells for Ukraine. This is a heartbreaking difference, which is absolutely inevitably going to have a huge effect on the situation on the battlefield.

The U.S. has set itself a goal of ramping up production of artillery shells to 100,000 a month by the end of 2025. That’s great, but this will still be less than half of Russia’s output. And that production ramp-up will take a lot of precious time.

Analysts note that there is an arms manufacturing war going on right now and the outcome of it is going to be extremely important for Ukraine. Ukraine didn’t choose to be attacked and already showed great determination to win this war. However, it is switching to a new artillery standard and cannot create a large weapons industry while being at war.

Russia now fires about 5 times more artillery rounds than Ukraine. Because they have them in stock. An anonymous NATO source said that Russia’s ammunition factories are working around the clock. About 3.5 million people work in Russia’s defence industry at the moment – 1-1.5 million more than before the war. However, not all the shells that they are using are actually made in Russia.

Russia imports artillery ammunition from Iran, which has sent around 300,000 artillery shells to Russia in 2023. North Korea has provided Russia with at least 6,700 shipping containers containing millions of rounds of different kinds. While Iran and North Korea do not seem like powerful military allies, they do have a lot of old-school artillery shells, which allows Russia to keep up a devastating pace of its attacks.

Nevertheless, according to CNN, Russia’s weapons stockpiles are still insufficient to meet its needs, so a major breakthrough is not on the horizon. Or so it seems. If Ukraine cannot improve its own ammo situation reliably for a long-term war, it will always be at a huge disadvantage.

I have found some interesting information about ghoul masks!

In response to the New York Times article from yesterday claiming the US intelligence led to the deaths of Russian generals:

“Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby said it was true that the United States supplies Kyiv’s forces with military intelligence “to help Ukrainians defend their country” but Ukraine makes its own decisions on whether to target a Russian leader or not.

“We do not provide intelligence on the location of senior military leaders on the battlefield or participate in the targeting decisions of the Ukrainian military,” Kirby said.

“Ukraine combines information that we and other partners provide with the intelligence that they themselves are gathering on the battlefield.

Then they make their own decisions, and they take their own actions.”

The White House National Security Council slammed the New York Times report as “irresponsible.”

“The United States provides battlefield intelligence to help the Ukrainians defend their country,” NSC spokesperson Adrienne Watson said.

“Buses carrying civilians out of the besieged Azovstal steel plant in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol have arrived in the Russian-controlled town of Bezimenne.

The coaches were seen arriving at the camp and evacuees were accompanied to the reception centre by representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UN, which have been helping to organise the evacuations, Reuters reports.

Officials at the centre said they expected several buses to arrive from the Azovstal plant, where hundreds of civilians and fighters are believed to be holed up.

Ukrainian officials had accused Russia of violating a ceasefire on Friday aimed at evacuating scores of civilians still trapped underground in the plant, after fighting thwarted efforts to rescue them the previous day.”-via The Guardian

“Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories Iryna Vereshchuk said that on May 6, 50 children, women and the elderly were evacuated from the Azovstal plant in Mariupol.

In her Telegram channel, Vereshchuk said that civilians were evacuated from Azovstal on Friday. “The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has called for the reopening of ports in the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa to help rein in the global hunger crisis.

The ports in Odesa and other Ukrainian Black Sea ports have been blocked because of the war, leaving millions of metric tons of grain sitting in silos.

Ukraine is a major breadbasket for countries in the Middle East and North Africa that depend on imports; in the eight months before the war began, almost 51 million metric tons of grain transited through Ukraine's Black Sea ports, said the WFP in a news release on Friday.

If the ports don't reopen, “mountains of grain” will go to waste, while “WFP and the world struggle to deal with an already catastrophic global hunger crisis,” said the release.

“Right now, Ukraine’s grain silos are full. At the same time, 44 million people around the world are marching towards starvation. We have to open up these ports so that food can move in and out of Ukraine. The world demands it because hundreds of millions of people globally depend on these supplies,” said WFP Executive Director David Beasley. At the start of 2022, 276 million people were already facing acute hunger. That number is expected to rise by another 47 million people if the war in Ukraine continues, according to the agency’s analysis.

Ukrainian Magura V5 marine drones made sure that the Russian patrol ship Sergey Kotov would not be covering the Kerch Strait anymore. The ship was attacked at night from March 4th to 5th and is a complete loss. It was reported that the 94-metre long patrol ship was attacked by at least 5 marine drones and despite 40 minutes of struggle will not be fighting anymore.

Dmytro Pletenchuk, a representative of the Ukrainian Navy, says that the Sergey Kotov was meant to defend Russian facilities in the Kerch Strait. The same strait that houses the illegal Crimean bridge, built to reinforce the Russian occupation of the Crimean peninsula. Ukraine has long warned the Russians not to send their warships there. “We warned last year not to sail here,” a navy spokesman said.

Pletenchukalso also noted that such ships like the Sergey Kotov can perform various tasks. From the protection of various objects, straits or a certain territory to the control of civilian shipping. It is said that in 2022 Sergey Kotov took part in the attack on Snake Island together with the cruiser Moskva. Both of these ships are gone now.

Sergey Kotov was 94 metres long. It was launched in January 2021 and was commissioned in July 2022. It was a very young ship in a young class of patrol ships. Its complement is up to 80 people, but it is unknown how many people were onboard during the last attack against this ship.

Sergey Kotov was attacked for the first time in September 2023, but suffered only minor damage. Now it is completely destroyed. Its estimated value was 65 million USD. Ukrainian intelligence claims that a Kamov Ka-29 helicopter was destroyed as well.

Sergey Kotov had a large weapons suite onboard. It probably used its 76.2 mm AK-176MA automatic dual-purpose gun to engage the marine drones that came for it, but it also had a Tor-M2KM air defence missile system, which was meant to protect it and surrounding objects from cruise missiles, drones and aircraft. Sergey Kotov also had two MTPU machineguns, anti-saboteur automatic grenade launchers, torpedoes and cruise missiles. It is a huge loss to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, which has already bled a lot.

Ukraine not-so-secretly hopes that the destruction of the Sergey Kotov will open up the path towards the illegal Crimean bridge. Oleksandr Musienko, head of Ukraine’s Military Law Research Center, said that Ukraine must accept the fact that Germany will not provide the Taurus cruise missiles, which would be very useful in destroying the Crimean bridge. However, if Ukraine can destroy the Russian Black Sea Fleet, it can also reach the Crimean bridge.
