My parents since the day I was born never learned emotional intelligence. Or coping mechanisms. So they have these ABSOLUTELY NUCLEAR TANTRUMS. Complete with foaming at the mouth and frothing raging and screaming being mean and nasty.
Saying the most mean and hurtful shit ever to be spoken to their children. Even if you do your best not to be provoked. They will get you its what they demand. It's what they need.
All throughout my life I have felt like going gypsy rose.

PART 2: THE SWARM TOUR
This is the second part of my 4-part analysis of MCR5, the Masterpost for which can be found here. Link to previous/next parts found at the bottom of the post. If there's something I missed, or you'd like to add your own spin/elaborate on something I brushed over, by all means I'd love to hear it!!
So in this section we’re going to talk about the recurring motifs on the merchandise and the set design. I’d love to talk about some of the things my sweet little girlfriend Gerard Way said on tour, but there were over 70 shows and there is no way I’d be able to get everything. The other variables are a lot easier to follow.
MERCH:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s merch that takes inspiration from previous albums, and merch that is inherently tied to The Foundations of Decay and this new age of My Chemical Romance. I’ll be talking exclusively about the latter.
We have recurring words of ‘swarm’ and ‘decay’, the fly motif, and that almost-military-earthy-olive green.
Decay is obvious reference to The Foundations of Decay. It’s likely this could refer to the health of MCR dissolving in the days leading up to their break up in a meta sense, but seeing as we’re under the assumption this track will also feature in MCR5, it would have narrative ties too. Decay can be synonymous with ‘deteriorate’ ‘collapse’ or ‘corrode’; the set of the tour itself is a collapsed, decimated cityscape. The use of decay is, however, in reference to organic matter that is decomposing, the chemical elements of it breaking down and being fed back into the earth. Decay also brings forth imagery of zombies, of vampires, of resurrection. Rebirth is already established to be a key theme of MCR5.
Swarm or allusions to swarms are littered throughout The Foundations of Decay, but more outright usage of the motif is within the tour marketing/merchandise. As I’ve just been horrified to learn, the cover/video for The Foundations of Decay features this awful, black, writhing swarm of flies. Fucking disgusting. Anyways, the tour itself has been referred to as the ‘Swarm’ Tour, and the word appears frequently alongside the fly iconography. What has MCR done? Decayed and rotted. What are we doing? Crowding and consuming that decay like a swarm of flies. WE are the Swarm!!! Gerard has talked about how rockstars ‘get eaten alive,’ but everything up until this point has been talking about the swarm allusion in a meta sense. I absolutely adore the whole aesthetic of this tour; the rot and decay surrounded by swarms of flies and vermin and post-nuclear landscapes.
Earlier I brought up themes of sensationalism of tragedy, femininity and the intersection of the two. Tragedies like 9/11 are replayed in the public eye repeatedly. And more than 20 years after, people will use 9/11 to justify religious and ethnic discrimination. I promise I’m not losing the plot here. This discussion is relevant to the aforementioned themes. Topics/events such as 9/11, Chernobyl and serial killers again and again are revived in the public eye. Not always to learn from these events but because humans are fascinated by tragedy and misfortune.
What’s even more fascinating than tragedy to the public sphere are tragic women. The dichotomy of femininity and darkness that exists with individuals such as Princess Diana, Jackie Kennedy or Gypsie Rose make their stories appealing to a wide audience. The way society treats these women teeters on the edge of learned acknowledgment to ravenous obsession. Their images and lives are resurrected again and again for our consumption. These attitudes towards tragedy and tragic women marry beautifully into the swarm imagery; hoarding, gross consumers that cling to tragedy like flies on a carcass.
This isn’t the only argument I have for this theme that may seem left-of-field, but as we’re going to get into with Part 3, there is A Lot to talk about.
The concept albums Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and The Black Parade had largely monochromatic colour schemes. The explosion of colour that came with Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys marked a tonal shift and fit within the ethos of the concept album to be loud, to live unapologetically, not just the aesthetics of The Zones. Featured on the marketing, merchandise and wardrobe, green appears to be the defining colour for the Swarm tour.
The specific shade of green is a warmer, yet desaturated shade that invokes militaristic imagery. That dull, earthy green is commonly used for military uniform and vehicles. Once again, MCR is feeding us allusions to military and war.
Tumblr media
Green as a colour is heavily associated with health and nature. The desaturated green present with the ‘Swarm’ iconography speaks to a decay of health and nature. Instead of affirming interpretations of life flourishing, we’re reminded of rotting and wilting vegetation. Zombies, who embody reanimation and decay, are often depicted with green skin. The Egyptian God Osiris, who lords over the dead, is depicted with green skin having been deceased and reanimated within the ancient Egyptian mythology. I’m not necessarily stating Egyptian mythology was an inspiration for MCR, simply pointing out green as a recurring colour in stories of reanimation.
Likewise, vampires were used as metaphor and point of reference for aesthetic in My Chem’s past. Red, black, white and greys appear frequently within depictions of vampires, with red and black featuring prominently in the wardrobes/art/merchandise of both TCFSR and TBP. MCR’s albums, mainly IBYMBYBMYL and TBP, allude to vampires. Even the draculoids within the Killjoys universe, share that same colour scheme of red, white, and black, despite not being actual vampires. Vampire iconography in the swarm tour was present, along with other ghoulish representations i.e. skeletons, bats, Gerard’s makeup, the setlists.
Is MCR moving away from vampires and onto zombies? Probably not. I don’t think Mr. Way wants to let go of his gothic bloodsuckers, but the ethos of zombies is much more aligned with the themes of The Foundations of Decay and MCR5. In ‘Vampires Will Never Hurt You’ the vampiric metaphor stood for addiction. The song was about the early stages of Gerard’s alcoholism, written in perspective of this character questioning if the listener would be able to do what is necessary, to stake their heart. ‘The Sharpest Lives’ likewise features many allusions to both drugs and vampires. If within MCR’s discography, vampires are used as a metaphor for addiction, would it be farfetched to say more zombie iconography would stand as a metaphor for rebirth? Being brought back not the same you once were, but as a new creature. One that rips itself from the ground and pilots its decrepit husk in grotesque, staggered movements, fuelled by instinct. Zombies as a recurring motif for MCR5 may present as a stretch but the symbols of ‘swarm’, ‘decay’ and flies marries well into the metaphor.
SET DESIGN:
Tumblr media
MCR is no stranger to theatrics. At every show, they begin with The Foundations of Decay, the sheet drops, and the backdrop is revealed; a destitute city scape, buildings collapsed, and the streets trashed with debris. The billboard features a dead rat playing into these motifs of decay, swarm/vermin. The text in neon above it is an area code for New Jersey.
On a larger scale, this level of destruction to an urban area is reminiscent of a war zone. It’s not the same sort of warzone that’s present in Danger Days, barren and destitute. This looks post-nuclear. Anti-war sentiment appears as a backdrop to The Foundations of Decay, as well as the actual Swarm tour. As stated before, decay can appear synonymous with ‘collapse’ ‘rubble’ or ‘dissolution.’ What does this destruction, this decay breed? Vermin. Swarms of insects and rats that flourish in the presence of death. There’s also something to be said about MCR staging their return, their rebirth, on a set of rubble. It reads loudly and clearly ‘we are not the old MCR. We are reanimating from the debris. We are reborn from the foundations of decay.’ Also it just looks cool as fuck.
(Sidenote, how is it possible I write 3 full paragraphs about the colour green and barely two for the set design?)

Hello
Well I was thinking about 41 with pilot reader x Hagman
Thanks
❤️
Hello! I hope you like this one! I went AU for this ask and wrote up a quick Pacific Rim drabble with Pilot!Reader and Hangman! Here is Kiss #41 Because the World is Saved. All of the Jaeger names are thanks to @thedroneranger and @mayhemmanaged brainstorming and help!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Kiss After Saving the World
It hasn't been very long at all since monsters began terrorizing the world. But they're not anything like what all of the old science fiction novels said they'd be like. For one, they didn't come to us from space. They emerged from a colossal portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean called the breach. The monsters, called Kaiju, attacked coastal cities while causing unprecedented damage. No conventional weapons or technologies could touch them. In the decade since the first Kaiju attacks, things have changed drastically.
Never has the world been more united. The only line of defense between the coastal cities of the world and the Kaiju were colossal piloted robots called the Jaeger. Each robot was operated by two pilots, attached via neural link, each responsible for a side of the robot. By linking the pilots, you could ensure seamless communication between them and the two could work as one to drive the Kaiju back. It worked - for a while. Then bigger and more dangerous Kaiju started to ascend from the Breach and more and more Jaegers started to fall in their wake. That's when the world began building the sea walls to protect humanity while decommissioning the Jaegers. The walls didn’t really work, but there’s nothing the Pan Pacific Defense Corps could do. There's only one Jaeger facility operating in the world now, the Hong Kong Shatterdome.
There are only four Jaegers in the colossal hangar and enough crew and operations personnel to ensure they’ll be piloted properly. There is also only one chance to shut down the breach for good. It’ll take a targeted nuclear warhead to the center of the breach. You’re the newest pilot in the Shatterdome and the only pilot compatible with Lieutenant Commander Jake Seresin, callsign Hangman, formerly of the United States Navy, currently of the Pan Pacific Defence Corps. He’s an interesting man, Commander Seresin, taciturn and cocky by turn even as he maintains that you will never be good enough to pilot this mission.
You’ve had three Kaiju battles since you took up the vacant pilot seat on the Gypsy Starfall and Jake still believes you’re not going to be good enough. You’re starting to believe it yourself. Every time you drift with him, you see his prior drift partner, Lieutenant Commander Javy Machado, the man who was once known as Coyote. Hangman and Coyote piloted the Gypsy Starfall for over four years, fighting back dozens of Category Three and Four Kaiju successfully, but Jake refuses to let you in. Your drifts with him bridge the gap between shallow and deep by a thread every time, one stray thought away from dissolving into chaos. Through sheer force of will, Jake’s managed to keep you from plummeting into that chaos.
You’re in the final briefing before the nuclear run at the Breach when the sirens blare.
“It’s a Category Five Kaiju, codename Slattern. All Pilots to their Jaegers. This is an all hands on deck situation.” Colonel Kazansky sounds as serious as you’ve ever heard him.
Within minutes you’re suited up and in Gypsy Starfall’s cockpit. Across the way you can see Payback and Fanboy loading up into Banshee Dagger and Phoenix and Bob sinking into Stryker Mayhem. You know that Rooster and Maverick are in Eagle Tirade to your right as well.
“Peony, do you read me?” Jake’s voice always makes you feel like you belong in a Jaeger when you hear him in the drift.
“Hangman, loud and clear.” Even your brainwaves sound nervous.
The four Jaegers move in unison, progressing in a straight line towards the breach. There’s a wicked storm brewing over the expanse and right as the Gypsy Starfall crosses the final defenses of the Hong Kong Sea Wall, you see the colossal head of Slattern peek out of the rift. It’s the biggest Kaiju you’ve ever seen and it’s not alone. It’s being guarded by two Category Threes, Otachi and Leatherback. It’s Otachi that you and Jake had beat back most recently and the Kaiju obviously holds a grudge because it’s rushing you as soon as it sees you. Thank god for your newly updated energy blade and the cover from Eagle Tirade’s guns. It’s through sheer luck that you spear Otachi through the heart. But Otachi’s death, and Leatherback’s death soon afterward drive Slattern into a driving rage. The colossal creature rushes towards the wall and soon all you can hear are Jake’s thoughts as the two of you fight with all your breath to beat the brute back.
You can’t let him decimate the Hong Kong Shatterdome and Hong Kong City. Jake’s entire family is there. He (You) can’t afford to bury any more people he (you) love. It’s with a roar of pure desperation that you both activate the one mayday weapon onboard Gypsy Starfall other than the nuclear warhead housed in her chest, a sonic cannon. The battering soundwaves drive Slattern back inch by excruciating inch until the brute’s teetering on the edge of the rift.
“We have to push him in, Jake!” You’re screaming down the drift link between you.
“Yeah, sweetheart, I know. But how?” He sounds exhausted, far more like an old man than a 30 year old.
“We’re the only thing heavy enough, Jake! One push and he takes us and the warhead with him. I’ll eject you and take on Star’s full neural load. Once we’re through the rift, I’ll blow the warhead.” You can feel the arguments against your plan even before they fly through the drift to you.
“I don’t have anybody in Hong Kong waiting for me.” A tear drips down your cheek at the thought of leaving your friends, leaving Jake, behind.
“You have me waiting for you, sweetheart. So we’ll do this instead. We’ll both push Slattern into the rift. Then we’ll both eject, okay?” But you don’t even have the chance to respond as you see another colossal Cat 5 Kaiju begin to approach through the Breach. You and Jake gun the engines on Gypsy Starfall and shove Slattern and his friends back to the hell they came from. That’s the last thing you remember.
You wake up to the sound of waves lapping against your ejection pod. The Pacific Ocean is roiling around you as waves higher than your head bat the pod around like it’s a toy. Jake! Where is he? It’s far too long before the waves subside and you finally see his pod floating a ways away.
“Jake?” Your voice is a hoarse scream as you grab a bit of driftwood and begin to row towards his pod. When you open the pod he’s just come to.
“Jake!” You’re crying again.
“Peony! You’re alive!” He kisses you then, soft and sweet. You can’t help how you sob in his arms when you pull away.
“We did it, sweetheart. We saved the world.” That’s where you stay until the helicopters come find you, tethered to the one man who you know better than you know yourself. Your soulmate and if you dare say it, the love of your life. Nothing can bring the two of you down. Not even a Kaiju.

i never knew men, be that man, don't look back... follow your path and i would be watching you fading farther and farther away.. don't ask don't tell in view of nuclear research, and you've gotten all the answers: indeed am a fair hair swedish untamed lady, piercing through your heart w glimpses of green shaded eyes, when recently wearing my glasses almost all the time, and my hair turned white, and i look old. ..tell me more of your man back in the days.. white hair, white skin, and incredibly strong. liked piano, tried guitar, enjoyed elvis and roger, played organ-pipe, a few songs. i was good at block-flute, he had three of those, brand new, could not whistle blow a lot flute. all those ended btw, at 'amipeterson, upon she was cruising western Alaska, on Princess. 2day JMB sells those at 2EUR a piece, all china. churches choirs still play songs and carols on block-flute. lutherans, the Black Church, opposite the street of greeks. am not going to come to your funeral, am not aiming UK, or SWE. i wanted you safe, isolated is indeed the best, and able paying all dues monthly from bed, till your last breath. i hate to see you leaving so soon, you indeed saw me RUNNING. i was falling for that, am still running, by 2024 only: since the Vodafone new smartphone ON, best for keeping fit. that man.. was crazy, indeed bought from Morocco and Spain all sort of silver, incl. Toledo stilettos pairs X-letter affixed onto white and then another red metallic shields to ornament walls. that sort of medieval decorating the lobby. he was indeed advised to carry two knives, and play legitimately the self-defense, and was avoiding police cars at all costs, when walking in the street. yet he was more concerned w bears, ssly. his baston was a long sword hidden concealed inside the creamy white corn alike horn material, sort of matador sword when slaying the bull's heart. i saw that only twice, i think he was having three walking sticks, and one of those was that sword. and then a long sharpened kitchen knife, sort of 'crocodile dundee. he was carrying weapons sometimes. it was not uncommon, usually policemen were AK47 auto-assault rifles, plus pistols. and BRV quarters of Schei, the old part, and several southern parts, where minorities usually, german, hungarian, or gypsies, all were carrying knives. it was not uncommon. ..i will love her, and perhaps when i will feel it coming, i will remember you.. i dunno.. the 'valhalla thing. having done the duties, having achieved accomplishment. we will be reaching Mars, and perhaps also the Moon. we will love gold, and women. gay is temporary, silicon surrogate, too. i would carry you inside of me, in the USA, you will be safe. i loved having you around, cross a heart! m

I was Ruby franke critical wayy before she got arrested and whenever I saw her (and other family homeless-by-choice lifestyle vloggers), I feel myself judging misha’s mom more and more.
And it bothers me how much people in fandom really romanticize his upbringing in poverty (though not outwardly- but when you read people talking about it, they make it a testament to his character and I’ve even seen people say that the affluent people around him can be jealous of the depth of Misha’s struggles because it makes him so interesting) because all that is literally the reason for the type of neglect & abuse he actually was a victim of. And it’s like, why he didn’t consider it a messed up way to raise kids until he was in his 40s lmao.
gen Xers didn’t even have the vocabulary for that shitty movement. In that article he wrote in promotion of Adventurous Eaters Club, he said his mom was pulling him out of school for personal days and having him participate in indie film nights where he was shown movies about nuclear holocausts and how they traveled the country just to participate in protests. That’s “unschooling”. He’s talked about how they lived in a tent out in the woods and squatted in abandoned business buildings, while his mom told them they were gypsies. She was trying to raise them off the grid. Dude could have ended up like this. Like she was so obsessed with her own politics and her fantasy version of the Soviet Union, that she was trying to opt-out of American society, and the worst part is that she never thought any of that was wrong and he still really admires her and his fans admire him for all of it. Lol. Lmao, even.

Hi! I've been following you for a while. I don't understand Greek but luckily there are translators. Based on what you post and what I see: favorite movie and why?
That’s a tough one so I will give two answers. One regular movie and an animation one.
1) Good Will Hunting:
This movie is just too good to watch. A great performance by both Matt Damon and Robbie Williams, great story telling and a beautiful meaning. It kicks you in the stomach but it’s a powerful one.
Honorable Mentions: The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Dead Poets Society, Undergound, Time of the Gypsies
2) When the Wind Blows:
A British 80’s animation movie about an old couple living in the countryside. The thing is a plane carrying a nuclear bomb is on the way. It’s a movie where we watch for an hour and a half two elderly people slowly deteriorating. Also it shows how much propaganda affects people living far away from the big cities.
Honorable Mentions: Les Tripplete De Belleville, Persepolis, Loving Vincent
Fortunately I speak English and I have lots of recommendations to make since I watch a hell lot of movies. So feel free to pm me for more.

A phantasmic parade lyrics
Tumblr media
This song is like a second attempt to get a similar message across but it actually works, and has some of the best riffs in the album. Still this song worked out a lot better musically than the title track of TQE did, which started strong but gave way halfway through to directionless orchestral meandering and a rather anticlimactic finale. Not bad lyrics, but Epica try to make this seem like a scientific album when it's really just a couple new scientific terms mixed in with their already established philosophy about life. The only thing marring this song is that the lyrics are basically another recycled mix of material from TQE and possibly DYU with the phrase “Holographic Principle” thrown in a couple of times. The chorus is nice but is mostly a typical Epica chorus with a few new orchestral flourishes. These riffs have heavy guitar accompaniment and go with Mark's growls for another new Epica element – I think the only other time growls and fast scale-heavy/technical riffs occurred together was for a short time in Deter the Tyrant, but this goes way beyond that and is appreciated. Near the end there is a groovy orchestral riff (actually 2 or 3,) that are fast and complex and sound like a more jazzy and much longer (fortunately) version of riffs from The Obsessive Devotion or Kingdom of Heaven. This song has some of Epica's best orchestral writing – possibly THE best, and considering that it is all performed by a live orchestra instead of samples or part samples/part live strings, only makes it all the more epic. A fresh Latin choir intro that sounds like late Renaissance or early Baroque counterpoint, leading into orchestra and piano building up into a new kind of growling riff: staccato guitars and orchestra for the ultimate punchy and kind of soundtracky accompaniment to Mark's growls. While the title sounds a bit pretentious, this is an excellent song. The Holographic Principle – A Profound Understanding of Reality I see this as becoming one of the most iconic and popular songs of the album, as it's really one of the few truly new elements in this album which has so far been just improvements upon the TQE style and tributes to past albums. This reminds me that the drums in the whole album are mixed lower than in TQE so they kind of fade into the mix instead of being a prominent driving force. It manages to keep sounding fresh and majestic even when there are brutal double bass drumbeats supporting the chorus. In other words, it's a fresh breath of air and doesn't really sound like anything else Epica has done so far. It almost seems to have a more Gypsy or Jewish folk sound to it (sorry if this is vague, it reminds me of the Jewish songs in Prince of Egypt or the songs of the Israeli band Orphaned Land more than of the Arabic types of Middle Eastern songs that Epica has done in the past). The Holographic Principle is set for release on September 30th via Nuclear Blast Records.įor more information on EPICA like their official page on Facebook. While Epica has done a TON of Middle-Eastern sounding songs before, this one really stands out. The Holographic Principle – A Profound Understanding Of Reality Track listing for The Holographic Principle is as follows:ġ2. Watch the official lyric video for Universal Death Squad here: Hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we did creating it!” The song is very much fun to play and I expect this one will do very well on stage. We have chosen for a different kind of lyric-video concept in which EPICA plays the track in a rehearsal room. The lyrics are dealing about advanced robotic legions with a self-determination to kill. Speaking about the track, guitarist and vocalist Mark Jansen says, “”The first song we unleash upon you is Universal Death Squad. This track is representative for The Holographic Principle, as it’s a heavy and melodic album. The track, titled Universal Death Squad, is the first track to be unveiled from the band’s highly anticipated new record, The Holographic Principle which is set for release in September. EPICA have released the first single from their upcoming record!

Subnautica Below Zero - Bases, Bases, Bases
Finally took some screenshots of my various compounds in Below Zero, now that I’ve completed the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My Twisty Bridges complex, Deep 13. A Large Room, two Moonpools, a Scanner room and a Control room. Power is from a Nuclear Reactor. There’s a parking area on top of the Large Room for SeaTruck modules, and two exterior grow beds for plants.
Tumblr media
The large room is broken up by partitions, with the largest space going to storage. Straight ahead to the moonpool, and the door on the left goes to...
Tumblr media
...The workshop, complete with Fabricator, Mod Station, Battery Charger, jukebox and Recyclotron.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Combination kitchen/office/bedroom
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And a bathroom with toilet, shower, and sink.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tom Servo the SeaTruck and Crow the PRAWN.I know a lot of fans don’t care for the Truck and miss the Cyclops, but I like the smaller size and faster speed of the Truck, as well as being able to mount the docking module so I can carry the Prawn with me for trips to the mine.
My second base, which would house an Alien Containment vessel, was going to be above water, but I couldn’t find a spot I liked, so it wound up being at the base of Delta Island, on the border of Twisty Bridges.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Satellite of Love (S.O.L.) has a stack of three Multipurpose Rooms, a Scanner and a Control room, with some I Compartments and a Glass J tying it all together. Power is from a series of Thermal Reactors deeper inside the island, though I had an issue with the last power transmitter disconnecting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found a pair of what turned out to be Cryptosuchus eggs, and after I put them in I wound up being away from the SOL for a while. When I came back I found about 6-7 full grown  Cryptosuchus’ hanging out, and releasing them into the wild was a bit of a hassle.
My last base, Gypsy’s Room, is snuggled up against the stern section of the Mercury II.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A double-stacked MPR, two Moonpools, Scanner and Control room. Four base pieces form a parking lot, and another provides space for a pair of grow beds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first floor houses a nuclear reactor and storage lockers, while the second is living quarters.

Nuclear Gypsies (生きてるうちが花なのよ死んだらそれまでよ党宣言), 1985 dir. Azuma Morisaki
Tumblr media
status: completed download here
translation notes (includes spoilers):
・The film’s english title is “Nuclear Gypsies” after the central subject matter, but the Japanese title is, as you may have noticed, much longer. The Romaji reading of the absurdly long title is “Ikiteru uchi ga hana na no yo shindara soko made yo to sengen”, which roughly translates to, “Declaration by the Being Alive is the Best - If You Die, That’s It Party” - “party” meaning a political party or faction. Going even deeper, the way “being alive is the best” is phrased alludes to the Japanese way of saying “silence is golden”, “言わぬが花” (iwanu ga hana), which in itself directly translates to “not saying is a flower”. Saying something is a “flower” in this way means that it’s “the best”, so in another way the first part of the title could be directly translated to “being alive is a flower”.  It is never made explicit why this is the film’s title.
・Rafute is a signature Okinawan dish, usually consisting of cubed pork stewed in awamori (very strong Okinawan alcoholic spirit), soy sauce, dashi and sugar. Nearly all the body parts of a pig are more or less commonly eaten throughout Okinawa, which explains Barbara’s quip about the pig ears. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafute
・The Okinawan song first sung by Shimabukuro (the character almost only seen on screen playing a sanshin and singing) and then referenced several times throughout the movie is “Juku no Haru” 十九の春 (”Spring of My 19th Year”). Commonly misthought of as a traditional Okinawan folk song (perhaps because it was “adapted” from a much older village song whose composer is unknown), the first recording of the song was released in 1972 and has since been one of the most widely known folk songs representative of Okinawa.  Though the lyrics tell a story from multiple perspectives, which make it a bit hard to comprehend, the song is about an older married man who plans to leave his wife for a younger woman from a brothel. The first 3 verses are sung from the perspective of the wife of the older man, and then the 4th and 5th verses are thought to be from the perspective of the man’s younger lover. The film only references the 1st verse and the 4th.
・There are a few things to note when the Captain says “This is the best place in all of Japan. The Peoples’ Republic of Okinawa, settled on the waves”. The first is that he may be referring to the Ryukyu (former name of Okinawa) independence movement, which has been present since the US occupation after WWII; the second is that “settled on the waves” is a play on words from the name of the eatery that Barbara’s family (?) runs, “Nami no Ue” 波の上、or “on the waves”.
・The Eisa festival is one of Okinawa’s biggest annual traditional festivals, held in late summer. https://www.visitokinawa.jp/information/eisa
・”Tokoyo-no-shima” is a mythological place from ancient Japanese folklore which conjures images of a “distant, otherworldly land”, and has the same connotation as “Heaven”, or at times, “Hades”. I believe the name comes from the story of Tokoyo, who sails to far off islands to search for her banished father. “Tokoyo-no-shima” is likely closely related to “Tokoyo-no-kuni”, which is the land beyond the living (like the afterlife, but not really sinister).
・Miyazato making a joke about wrapping things up in old newspaper and exchanging them for tissues refers to an old system in Japan where people could exchange things for tissue/toilet paper.
・Tadashi, an aspiring yakuza underling, refers to Miyazato as “aniki” 兄貴 which is a common way to politely address someone older or above you in rank (sometimes also of the same rank) within yakuza gangs. It translates literally to “(older) brother”, but I have avoided directly translating it to complicate the character relationships.
・A goza mat is a cheap mat made of rush, common in old Japanese houses.
・Kokusai Street (Kokusai-dori) is one of the main streets in downtown Naha, Okinawa.
・Many references are made to a “hanba” 飯場 which can mean a construction camp, bunkhouse or living quarters for workers depending on the context. In Nuclear Gypsies, they refer to the poorly kept living quarters that plant workers live out of, so translations of the term stem from “plant workers’ living quarters”, shortened when necessary.
・Aiko tells the story of how she was named by referring to words used when playing Japanese rock-paper-scissors, “Jan-ken-pon”じゃんけんぽん. I won’t go into the details of the language used in Jan-ken-pon, but the phrase “aiko deshou!”アイコでしょう!is what you say when the first round yields no winners, and so another round is required (usually in quick succession). The phrase “aiko deshou” literally means “it’ll be a tie, won’t it!”, which ties in to Aiko’s story about her name.
・There is a section in the film where Aiko reminisces about all the people she’s met, beginning with the people at the living quarters she was at. The rhythm of her pattern of speech gradually starts to follow a simple possessive grammar that is easy to say in Japanese but difficult to capture in English - for example, “tsume-kami no Takeuchi sensei” 爪噛みの竹内さん puts together the verb/noun - “nail-biting” - with the name of someone - “Mr. Takeuchi”, more or less indicating that the thing that represents that person the most is said verb/noun; an easier example is “Sawa from Shinonome” - “Shinonome no Sawa san”. These get very complicated and Japanese-centric as Aiko goes on, and while I have tried to capture the bizarre nature of her monologue, there is not enough subtitle space to fully translate the multitude of strange expressions she uses to describe all these people, all of them unique. Moreover, her dialogue begins to multiply around 2-3 times and overlap over one another, making it near impossible to transcribe all the things that are being said. Where possible I have included 2 simultaneous dialogue lines in the subtitles, but otherwise I have chosen to only transcribe and translate the lines that can be heard more or less prominently.
・“Distribution of mementos” refers to “katami-wake” 形見分け, a Japanese custom of giving away the belongings of someone that has recently passed away to family members or others close to the deceased.
・A fox’s wedding is a Japanese expression used to describe a sun shower. Where the term “kitsune no yomeiri” 狐の嫁入り is used, I have chosen to leave it in its literal translation rather than translate it as “sun shower”, as later in a pivotal scene where a sun shower happens, the characters refer to it using a different expression.
・At Aiko’s wedding, the “exchanging of nuptial cups” refers to “san-san kudo” 三々九度, a Shinto marriage ritual of exchanging sake cups between a newly wedded couple.
・When Ginko talks to Barbara about Maria’s future, she actually says something along the lines of her “living like a dog who’s being kept alive beyond its useful life”. This somewhat disheartening expression is “kaigoroshi” 飼い殺し in Japanese, whose kanji literally means “killing by owning”. The expression has come to mean someone who is being kept on a payroll despite not being utilized for their skills. I have tried to reflect this in the subtitles.
・When Miyazato mentions “hateful uranium”, the Japanese being spoken is “uraminyumu” 恨みニューム, which is a portmanteau of “urami” 恨み or “grudge, resentment, malice”, and the Japanese pronunciation of uranium. I couldn’t think of any appropriate ways of reflecting this play on words in English, so I have translated it normally.
・I could not find any reference to the Okinawan expression about hands and elbows mentioned by Tamae’s mother at the end of the film, so I’m unsure as to whether it’s real or not. Similarly, I could not locate any references to Shimabukuro’s ominous response “Higan-jirai jishiki, ichigan-jira ishiki”, so I am unable to translate it. It sounds vaguely Buddhist, or it may be some uncommon idiomatic expression - I have no idea, unfortunately. If anyone knows, feel free to get in contact and fill me in - I would love to know!

Okay, I'm looking for the title of a book.
It's about a popular girl that somehow time traveled into the past and finds herself in her house, just years earlier.
There's a geeky boy that is the current occupant of her room and I believe he helps her stay there and out of site from his parents.
He signs her up for school and I think they end up getting together.
I remember each chapter changed perspective between the girl and the boy.
Does this ring any bells for any one?
I read it years ago in high school and would love to know the name of it.
