Djo reminds me of Beck... Arguably another one of my forever musical artists and I can't help but draw parallels between the two. And I love that because Beck is so successful and has had such subtle staying power without ever slowing or compromising his musical approach.

I don't always hear that comparison. "Djo Tame Impala blah blah" and sure yes, but I hear and see Beck way more.

His song structure is remarkably like Beck. One of the few artists that really fucks with creative bridges in their songs, total changes in song pace or structure at the climax or throughout the song, heavy beats behind the guitar and bass or melody. Lots of sounds and layers - vocal layers, sounds instruments. Their lyricism is also similar - sometimes cohesive and narrative while other times a literal brain dump of words and thoughts.

He's also a one man with a band to back or perform who is also a very visual artist who uses the art of the album to take it places. Beck changes his sound all the time but not his style. He has worked with SO many artists indie, pop, rock. He's been around a long time and really stayed true to music as the art not the system. Something I'd love to say the same for Joe one day.

Fuck 2022

For anyone saying 2022 was their worst year, I feel you. This is my "2022 Year in Review":

I had two CT scans, one with a cortisone injection. One MRI.

I was hit by someone who ran a red light and totaled my car.

A massive surgery called a PAO where they break your pelvis in four places then "reassemble" it the way it's supposed to be.

I was put on calcium as a result of my surgery, which caused my body to produce the most painful kidney stones I've EVER had (which is saying something).

During the passing of said stones, I broke my ass. Stress fracture. Just an endless series of setbacks.

During all this my psychiatrist, who I'd been seeing for over 10 years passed away

I was on a walker for almost five months, which really messed up my back and caused problems with my "good" leg.

Seventy-eight doctor's appointments. Twelve in October alone.

So, for anyone saying, FUCK OFF 2022, I hear you, and good riddance.

Gentle reminder that very little fandom labor is automated, because I think people forget that a lot.

That blog with a tagging system you love? A person curates those tags by hand.

That rec blog with a great organization scheme and pretty graphics? Someone designed and implemented that organization scheme and made those graphics.

That network that posts a cool variety of stuff? People track down all that variety and queue it by hand, and other people made all the individual pieces.

That post with umpteen links to helpful resources, and information about them? Someone gathered those links, researched the sources, wrote up the information about them.

That graphic about fandom statistics? Someone compiled those statistics, analyzed them, organized them, figured out a useful way to convey the information to others, and made the post.

That event that you think looks neat? Someone wrote the rules, created the blogs and Discords, designed the graphics, did their best to promo the event so it'd succeed.

None of this was done automatically. None of it just appears whole out of the internet ether.

I think everyone realizes that fic writing and fanart creation are work, and at least some folks have got it through their heads that gif creation and graphics and moodboards take effort, and meta is usually respected for the effort that goes into it, at least as far as I've seen, but I feel like a lot of people don't really get how much labor goes into curation, too.

If people are creating resources, curating content, organizing the creations of others, gathering information, and doing other fandom activities that aren't necessarily the direct action of creation, they're doing a lot of fandom labor, and it's often largely unrecognized.

Celebrate fan work!

To folks doing this kind of labor: I see you, and I thank you. You are the backbones of our fandoms and I love you.
