hvit ravni, kalld ýtar a leíde minn sjeili i streid.
NORTEIGR is a 18+ CYOA passion project taking place in the titular northern country of Norteigr and draws heavy influence from both Norse mythology and history, while being set in its own reality altogether.
Tumblr media
You're no one in this world. Your memories are gone and all that you carry is your name. A history forgotten, only to be returned in vague whispers in your dreams.
Fate, coincidence, or sheer luck brings you to live in Midjabód, a town where you have to rebuild your life while learning both about the unrest that grips the country, and your fellow Midjabó, for better or worse. The Jarl is preparing for war, and you're left to navigate your own identity, the mounting hostilities, interpersonal relationships, and mysterious fragments of your past life you no longer recognize. Will you remember in time, and what calamity will follow if you don't?

DEMO TBA • PINTEREST • RO PORTRAITS • PLAYLIST
Characters / RO's
Vargi Geirfinnsson (M)
He almost put an axe in your face when you first met. You're pretty sure he still wants to put an axe in your face now, but the Jarl's orders are to treat you like one of their own and what kind of son would he be if he went against his father's orders. This doesn't stop him from being hostile in private, which probably means you should keep to the more populated areas if you wish to have a proper conversation with him.
While he holds unbridled suspicion and dislike towards you, he's well respected in Midjabód, and one of their best warriors to boot. He has few friends, being that he's mostly regarded as the son of the Jarl, and the mightiest berserkir in their Vikingr ranks, nothing else. Destined to follow in his father's footsteps, Vargi does everything asked of him and has the hardest time with failure, and refuses to see failure as an option even in the face of death. Armed with a short temper and a two sharp axes, he's best be left alone.
Broki Hrekisson (M)
A talented bard and storyteller, Broki was the first one to welcome you to Midjabód with open arms. Your first true friend after losing your memories, and the trailblazer to your recovery, Broki brings you objects and trinkets like a little crow just to see if it stirs something forgotten in you. This makes him a mighty good pickpocket as well, but you have been sworn to secrecy about those shady mishaps.
The other Midjabó pin him as a local celebrity, and there's no place you can go without at least one friend or admirer showing up. Boastful at times, mischievous at others, Broki basks in the attention and is always chasing a new way to keep the masses entertained. Although his tongue is sharp, his blade isn't and he never truly learnt what was so appealing about becoming a Vikingr, and holds to his quill rather than a sword.
Svala Alfdottir (F)
Svala was the one to mend your body when you arrived in Midjabód. As one of the priestesses of the town, Svala is the most respected member of the community, and people clamor for her favor, for her to put in a good word to the Gods. She has kept herself close to you, worried yet intrigued by your story of loss and feeling of not belonging, and thus uses her privilege to bring you closer to your past, through magic, herbalism, and meditation.
When the deerskin headdress comes off and blood washed away, Svala is a very soft-spoken woman. While her voice carries prayers to heavens during rituals, she shifts completely when she is let roam free of her responsibilities. She prefers quiet times with her sisters, and nature is her respite. Once a mischievous little girl, Svala also knows all the nooks and crannies around Midjabód, be it the hidden cracks by the mountains, burrows in the woods. or forgotten caves by the ocean.
Randveig Ulfbjorndottir (F)
No one thought a retired berserkir would take in a stranger to live in their home, but Randveig was the one who gave you shelter when you had none. She doesn't take anything in return, only citing that everyone needs someone to take care of them in their darkest hour. At those words, your eyes usually go to her missing sword-hand, and you think you get it.
Although Randveig can be stoic and quiet, her wit could bring even the most studious bards to their knees. Her mind is sharper than the sword that cut her hand, and she is uncannily smug, if in a slightly terrifying way. Her Vikingr past is behind her, but at times of too much ale, you see a different side to her; A young woman dancing on tables with her fellow warriors, taken back to a time when she was allowed to do what she loved best, at least until she schools herself to be just a tavern owner once again.

happy first monday (let's pretend it's monday yes) of december! it's yule time. i am thriving. also treated myself by slapping together a new update header, hope y'all like it!
this last month has been spent on a lot of reflecting, on how i want to go forward with this game, how i've portrayed it so far, and how my friends have reacted to my ideas and idle chatter about it.
i feel like i've made the game seem... comedic. i mean, it is, to some extent, but not this much. i'll be trying to show more of the gritty, dark, and heavy side of it in the future. i mean, even a buddy of mine called it an endearing little saints row fan-game so i almost gave up on this entirely. my heart still sinks when i think about it.
but i'm getting off track! sorry about that. before continuing, here's the word count update!
word count: 5648 -> 6657
i realize that this number is super small for a month of progress, and i can't say the other one has fared too well either. it's been a bad month for me all around, and i now work two jobs just to keep myself afloat which is not doing my creative spirit any favors. the mental health is crumbling y'all.
good news is that i've gotten permission to take my laptop to work and can tinker on the game when there's nothing else demanding my attention. which should bump up the number for next months update, because i would love to get at least the prologue finished and edited so i could release it before new year. a dream if i ever had one for sure.
about sam: they went though a makeover! i've not yet made changes to their pinterest board, and there's no changes happening to their backstory; they're still the same sam suffering from a terrible upbringing, who talks their way out of trouble while fighting off chronic migraines by smoking enough weed to put snoop dogg to shame. there's of course more to them but that feels most apt right now haha.
i can also say that there are now five endings to the game, if i make sense of the outlines. three of them are main endings, with their own little minor epilogues depending on a variety of things (mostly who's alive, carrying choices, etc.) and two bad endings, at least for now. not counting mc deaths as bad endings though, since there are multiple points where they can die so it'd be pretty redundant.
anywho, happy holidays to those celebrating, and sorry for a late update!
🧡

Is this being worked on ?
yup!
been putting some distance between myself and social media because wow seeing all the great writing makes me feel the imposter syndrome extra hard. super busy with work too, but that doesn't stop me from writing lmao.
still, hungry dogs is being worked on every week, be it fifty words or five thousand. @norteigr-if is also getting some love but at a much, much slower pace.
sorry for the silence but it's actually helped me focus a ton and i'm going to keep it this way for a while longer, at least until chapter one is ready to go live for you all 🙈

From sickness and delirium, a dream manifested goddess with a breath of cold wind and sky of dancing lights; Synvigja, magic touched, eyes in three, fingers untouched by corruption and death. To see, never to be seen, lonesome ostracized seer, descended to the earthen realm and with every healing touch infected curse; to see what she seen, endless future, illness, destruction, salvation. Caught by father, cursed her name never to touch another, chained to the night. Each tear sparked light in the sky, the moonbound goddess only raven seen, dances her lonesome dance, hem flowing through the darkness, an eternal apology.
Synvigja, goddess of prophecy, magic, medicine, and the night.
Associated with curses, aurora borealis, mortar & pestle, and ravens.
Her binding rune is sacred for the priestesses within Norteigr, and it adorns every ritual dress and blade. The seer's hut holds many of these runes in various forms, from talismans to effigies, and the most devout have it tattooed on some part of their face or torso. It's said that the first ritual stone carved in Midjabód was engraved with Synvigja's rune, although many protest that it was Ýtar who was written first.
Syndág is the last day of the week, and is the day blessings are renewed and connecting with the deities is proposedly easiest. Many choose Syndág to feed the countless ravens living within their town or village, and others see it as a day to take it easy and mind their own health. It's also a day where warriors are forbidden from training, as it's a day of healing both body and soul. Some still train, risking Synvigja's wrath, and many have suffered serious injury the coming week. A notable person born un Syndág is, of course, Svala, but also Tova, the tailor. Tova, however, was not born on the night of divine lights. Coincidentally, Alsyna, the white raven thought to be an extension of Synvigja, is said to have appeared in Midjabód on a Syndág.
The feast in her honor, ironically, lands on the brightest night of the year; in the middle of the warmest season, for the night when the sun doesn't set entirely. It's seen as her being free from her nocturnal shackles where she was bound, and it brings a night of merriment and dancing. The day is spent enjoying herbal drinks and making offerings of medicinal herbs at her altar, and the night culminates in a dance of colors where dancers don fabric dyed in the colors of the aurora in the sky and mimic the dance of the lights, taking over the goddesses duties as she roams free, wherever she is.
Every priestess and seer in Midjabód completely devote themselves to Synvigja, and can not be listen in order of most devoted. Svala is very drawn to the deity, not only because she was born on her day and had the lights bless her, but a much more personal reason as well.

How ROs want to be comforted after a long tiring day? (Have a cup of tea, massage, cuddles, food, someone to confide to, etc.)
guess what, you get to do all of these with the ro's at some point, if you so desire, wink wink.
vargi is a big fan of sparring. just friendly, running through motions sort of playfighting where he doesn't have to think, just react and get the tension out of his mind and body. it does take a pretty skilled fighter to spar with him since this man doesn't know the meaning of "taking it easy". if that wasn't an option or there's no one brave enough to volunteer, then a ride through the fjords silences his thoughts just as well.
broki just wants to spend time with people he truly cares about. while a tiring day has a lot of admirers and fans crowding around him, comfort comes in the form of small, intimate moments. it wouldn't matter where it was, but with his fame it's always a gamble, and finding a secluded spot to just sit and talk is what has him at peace. as long as he can spend time and not feel the pressure of notoriety, he's happy.
svala is constantly surrounded by people as well, so she would be most comforted by a walk outside the walls, maybe find a waterfall and go for a swim. although the streams in norteigr are frigid, she finds the chilliness refreshing, and could spend hours just wading through those waters while singing old melodies for the spirits around her. it's a bit of a ritual of her own, to get away from people and ease her own burdens.
randveig could be assumed to enjoy sparring as well, but she really doesn't. not because she's forbidden, but because food brings her the most comfort. since she's not originally from midjabód, but much further south, she has recipes that bring her joy and reminds her of something warm and nostalgic. sharing those old forgotten dishes with someone she appreciates? she might not show it, but it means the world to her.

spilled coffee all over my desk this fine morning but -
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
jokes and my inability to react to anything normally aside, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
i'll go a bit off tangent under the cut but it's just me rambling about how thankful i am for all of your support both on norteigr and hungry dogs. none of this would be possible without you, and you lot keep me going every day.
alright, emotional time.
seeing this follower count made me cry happy tears. norteigr now sports over five hundred followers, while hungry dogs has reached over seven(!!!) hundred.
i am so immensely thankful for the support. when i started this project, it was nothing but a way for me to cope with some awful things stuck on my mind after I came home. i won't get into detail about that, but we all know war is hell.
this started as a story for myself, but i feel like it has become something bigger than itself. while lore drops haven't happened yet (and i'm sorry about that, still working things out), i am excited to bring your into this little fictional world created out of scraps. while hungry dogs is a more relatable setting and taking a bit of a back seat on the activity front (still writing it!), i'm beyond thrilled to see so many interested in something more fantastical, foreign, and completely made up.
this project has kept me sane. it's given a reprieve from day-to-day struggles, and focusing on the story and setting gives me a warm, safe feeling when i get to delve into it. and seeing so many of you interested in it makes me feel so happy, i can't quite describe it with words. it's a feeling that you get when you see people excited for your work, and wait for updates, although they are few and far between.
thank you, you've really helped me feel like a human again <3

Would you say one of either Hungry Dogs or Norteigr is your "main" project and the other a side project? Or are they about equal in your mind? It seems like you're more active on this page but I'm not sure if that means you consider this your main one.
hmm good question.
i'd say hungry dogs is my main project, in a sense that i have set outlines, a vague deadline, and more plans for expanding the universe (as in, tentative looks at a spinoff, an extra, maybe a second book in the far, far future.) it's my main universe that's been in the works for the longest time as well.
norteigr is still in the works though, no worries about that! there's a lot of code going on right now and it's putting me off a bit, but it's chugging along. it's more of a project that i relax with when writing the dogs starts to feel either forced or like a chore, which helps me get both books written if that makes sense? i love them both dearly, but sometimes i prefer working on one over the other for a few months.
now that you mention it, i should show that blog some love as well. been too stuck in twine to realize it's turned into a barren wasteland lmao

You made your own conscript? Do you also have a conlang to go with it?
i sure did haha. just making more work for myself and for what? lore? you bet i did lmao
i do got some conlang in the works, but it's nowhere near as complete as i'd like it to be. it won't make much of an appearance in the game since the entirety of norteigr speak it natively (except the new king, he's got a bit of an accent going). There are some occasional insults (by vargi, obviously), endearments, geographical things, and words associated with rituals and customs that come up in nortegrian, but it's, uh, digestible? yeah that's the word.
it's surprisingly hard to come up with a coherent language, whod've thunk 😂

i love me some tag games, thank you @tsoarw-if !
Rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have wips. This is for both art and writing!
these are almost all hungry dogs related, because right now i only have this project and one other i just started on
Hungry Dogs (Used to be called Dogs of Los Llantos lol)
His colors were blue and red
BeginningOfEnd
13hospitalescape
Mona snaps
where yo clothes at
bad ends
prisonbreakv1
Norteigr
these feel vaguely spoilery, but i think it's fine lol. i don't know who's been tagged so i'll take a gander on @thevoid-if, @signalhill-if, and @leftski-if

Don't tell anyone I'm a language nerd but I'm curious how it works in this world? I noticed the little quote in your intro post but google translate doesn't cooperate. Idk if you noticed but putting the quote in it and selecting 'detect language' gives this. "white straight, cold pushes my soul into a struggle" from icelandic?
your secret is safe with me ;)
the language in norteigr follows a few rules, but it's mostly a mashup of swedish, norwegian, and icelandic words with a miniscule dash of danish in there. so it's a frankentein's monster linguistically, somewhat gibberish but not completely.
for example, the quote on the intro post is meant to read "white raven, call to ýtar to lead my soul in battle", with ýtar being the equivalent of ódinn in this world.
i could go more into depth with the nuances of language here, but we'd be here all day but i haven't figured it out a 100% yet lol

Hello! How are you? I would love to romance the male ro's but can mc still have a friendship with the female ro's? both sound like sweethearts!!!
hi! i'm having a magnificent day today, thank you <3
randveig would cringe at being called a sweetheart, but you can absolutely befriend them even if you don't show romantic interest! in fact, you can befriend all of them and leave the romance out, or even have a romance going with all of them at once; norteigr (or at least the northwest where midjabód is situated) is very open about love and sexuality.
so there's no negative repercussions of romancing one character, since it doesn't prevent you from befriending another. if anything, it gives you more insight to how these four interact with one another since they're all aquatinted, almost friends, one way or the other.
