Does Sacha go to college? Does he ever get another girlfriend or is that ruined for him now?
From my Shadow AMA
Yes, to the first question! Sacha majors in marine environmental health and ends up working in the local community with water clean-up and nonpoint pollution.
No to the second one. It's ruined for him now. He does, however, get his own apartment and lives with some friends that he makes.

a question, do you think the phasing out of CD/DVDs and other physical media goodness alongside with peripherals that could use them was entirely artificial (as in done on purpose)?
Absolutely. After years of attempts to control physical media through artificial means (DRM) the turn to all digital was an irresistible maneuver by Big Content to make sure they could better exploit their holdings for profit. It's more complex than that though, it is also partly a confluence of factors from the usual techbro wanking to emerging trends (SSDs making spinning drives/optical "obsolete") to tech startups pushing the centralisation of media and computing experience into the server rather than client side, and importantly the ghost of Steve Jobs and his dream of the total applianceification of technology in the home. Amazon, Alphabet et al also drove things in this direction explicitly for self-enrichment (selling services) and it should be readily apparent by how closed-off their respective platforms are.
Software as a Service is another death knell of computing freedom driven purely by corporate profit motive and while it seems unrelated to the death of physical media it certainly helped push the all-digital, and now all-remote computing, paradigm that we've fallen into. After all, if you could hold on to a physical copy of some software or game then you wouldn't need to pay a continual service to keep using it. This tangent has more to do with the commercialisation of the open-source release cycle though but the spiritual shift it caused is relevant.
X as a Service patterns in general is a big reason why the optical disc has been intentionally displaced. There is still a valid technical argument against physical media with it's bandwidth limitations that I'm willing to agree to, but do not believe is reason enough to get rid of physical media. Sure your common DVD or BD can't possibly make use of the bandwidth of modern computers but that isn't a very good reason to not have them because for their intended purposes it doesn't matter. Video streams on disc are unaffected since they are specifically engineered for their respective media, and using them as intended as backups means the speed constraints don't matter; software can install to faster storage so that's also a nonpoint.
But that brings up the next factor, hardware manufacturers and the "enthusiast" demographic. In the unending drive to sell expensive nonsense and have a PC you can brag about on Reddit, physical media was a roadblock. The cultural trickle down had an effect on the rest of the market from there. If it isn't faster then it isn't good is the mentality. And from a profit aspect, if it isn't faster and smaller and cheaper to produce, it isn't profitable enough to maintain. Physical drives have a smaller margin than SSDs or card readers, so you gotta convince everyone they suck and it's better to "live in the future" (ie buy their new shit every two years). Markets making problems to solve so they stay relevant and necessary, and most importantly, heinously profitable for shareholders.
Related is the push towards smaller thinner laptops which a physical drive directly is contraposed to. There is only so thin and light you can go to have a disc drive, and the decade of sleek and thin did no favors here. This is mainly Apple/Jobs' fault, but also neometropolitans and being vapid trendseekers that don't have the required constitution to carry and use a typical laptop of the preceding period. So very inconvenient to have to actually exert any effort to carry I guess? Which is hilarious considering that people just two decades prior might have been spotted lugging around those "portable" computers or even electric typewriters literally everywhere and sometimes on foot or bike ("real" laptops in the 90s and even early 00s were wildly expensive still).
Then there are other cultural attacks, like the thing about not having enough meatspace to store your discs and the pandering to rootless neometropolitanism about taking your whole (digital) life with you on a tiny chip. How convenient! So convenient! Until you stop paying anyways. But think about how cool you are to associate with {BRAND} and {AESTHETIC}!
Long post is long, so I'll stop here though I do have to say for fairness sake that I do also thing there are huge benefits to the development of SSDs and Flash storage. I mainly hate that it was used to essentially hamfist every other technology out of the space instead of it's proper place as another tool in the box, and moreso it's leveraging by bastards to steal all of our money. I didn't even mention the role tablets and smart phones had in all this either but you're smart and can deduce why they have turned out Evil. Also, fuck Redditors and "enthusiasts".

Okay, so, to clear up confusion:
She was genuinely upset by the accidental overgeneralization, and was reminded of it by Sparklies's post, so that explains that part
When she got attacked she felt like she was being attacked for trying to be gentle (she felt a direct confrontation would have been more detrimental to the kids)
He did say things he didn't mean because he decided that trying to explain wasn't worth it and he'd rather just you all hate him than anything else, he would apologize but has to be convinced that doing that would be better than just disappearing from their lives, assuming that is the case
He is possibly relinquishing one of his positions to be handled by support staff, presumably, but that is irrelevant
They are still really upset about the initial offense
They are making soap with me right now and will be busy for a while
Apparently I require more eye protection than most coworkers :(

Fun Dessi facts #13
Modern AU music tastes:
My girl, Dessi, is a headbanger rocker through and through. Her auto shop is always blaring out what she considers the best music ever. It’s the best way to get her in the groove to get the job done and she only really jams to it while in her shop or in her car alone. Dessi does go to the occasional concerts nearby where she knows the manager and bouncers very well. She often points out any growing issues that start to rise among the crowd. She also happens to be lucky that the neighbor shop, A tattoo parlor, also enjoys the music coming from the walls between them.
Examples of what Dessi listens too:
Dying to Live by Sevendust
Let The Chaos Reign by Pop Evil
Bullet With a Name by Nonpoint
and of course, The Lumberjack by Jackyl

I have been a Skye Sweetnam for 19 years, and Skye and I have interacted with each other for 16 of those years, so I’ve decided to go ahead and rank them: My Top 10 Favorite Moments As A Skye Sweetnam Fan:
• 𝟏.) 𝐒𝐤𝐲𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐨 𝐂𝐲𝐜𝐨 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 (𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟕): This is still my favorite Sumo Cyco concert that I‘ve been to, because I got to go with my mom and my cousins, in New York City, during one of the best periods of my life. I also finally met Francesca Ludikar in person at this show. I told no one in the band or Frankie that I was going to be at the show until the day of, so it was something of a surprise. Skye gave me a hug and thanked me for coming after their set but it was the moment where I was about to leave that is my top favorite moment because when she said thanks again and gave me another hug, she sounded REALLY happy that I made the trip to see her band, and l’ve never forgotten that. I don’t have pictures or videos of that hug, but I have it saved in my memory bank, and that’s alright with me.
• 𝟐.) 𝐊𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐤𝐲𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐞 (𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑): This was at the last show I went to, in Fort Lauderdale, during The Emerald Cities Tour with Nonpoint and Blacktop Mojo. I streamed the moments I kissed her on Instagram Live, and it’s still on my Instagram account if you want to check those out. I also gave her a handcuff necklace and a skulls necklace, and she has worn both a couple of times, and it’s made me so happy every time she has done so.
• 𝟑.) 𝐒𝐤𝐲𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐤𝐞’𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐚𝐬 𝐕𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐬 (𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟗): I didn’t see Skye during this trip, but I’m counting this and putting it up so high because so much good stuff happened during this two week trip, not just in terms of sexy Skye Sweetnam content, but also when it comes to my friends, other people that I am fans of, and in my own life as well. One of those rare moments where the stars aligned, and there was good stuff everywhere you looked. 2019 might have been Sumo Cyco’s best year yet, with the Las Vegas trip, getting discovered by Napalm Records, and of course, their performance at Download Festival. Yeah, 2021 was big with Initiation, but Covid eventually put a stop to their plans and things kinda came to a standstill. This was the last year before Covid, so things were happening in Cyco City all year long, from January through December. I don’t think we realized how good the pre-Covid times were until they stopped.
• 𝟒.) 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐤𝐲𝐞, 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐞, 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐤𝐲𝐞’𝐬 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐧, 𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐨 𝐂𝐲𝐜𝐨’𝐬 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 (𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟖): I have to give a shout out to Krystal Jem for making this one happened. They attended Sumo Cyco’s annual Halloween concert in 2018, and I told them to tell Skye I said, “Hi.” I watched Frankie’s streaming of part of Sumo Cyco’s set on Instagram Live, and then I moved on with my night. But then, an hour later, I get an Instagram phone call, which was strange, because that NEVER happened with me. It was Krystal, who told me to wait because they were on line to meet Skye. And a few minutes later, Krystal held the phone up and I got to have a quick conversation with Skye. This was the best night of 2018 for me, and if that moment wasn’t enough, I also got to talk to Matt and then Frankie afterwards. During my talk with Frankie, Skye’s brother, Cameron, walked into the shot and saw me. He said, “Steven? You ROCK! You ROCK!” And now I’m wondering how many members of Skye’s family know who I am. Krystal later told me that Skye looked just as happy to see me as I was to see her.
• 𝟓.) 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐛𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐢-𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐝 𝐒𝐤𝐲𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐞, 𝐚 𝐛𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐢-𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡, 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐚 (𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟓): Up until I actually met Skye in person, this was the high point of my Skye Sweetnam fandom. It’s going to be 8 years since this moment happened, but I still remember this day like it was yesterday. Because it’s hard to forget talking to Skye Sweetnam for an hour while she has a skimpy purple bikini on. Frankie looked stunning in her bikini too. Matt was there too, but honestly, it was hard to focus on him when Skye and Frankie were in the shot.
• 𝟔.) 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐤𝐲𝐞 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐦𝐢𝐱 𝐂𝐃𝐬, 𝐚 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞 (𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟕): I made a whole TikTok video about this that I urge you to check out because I really don‘t feel like telling the story again. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8MktFTR/
• 𝟕.) 𝐒𝐤𝐲𝐞 𝐩𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐲𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 (𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟕): Another moment that I have talked about before. Long story short: Skye held a contest on her MySpace profile where she told fans to use a graphic of her as their profile picture, with the winner receiving a prop from the “Music Is My Boyfriend” music video. There was originally only supposed to be one grand prize winner, so the fact that I was chosen as the 2nd place grand prize winner has always made me wonder if Skye decided to have a 2nd place grand prize winner only because she wanted an excuse to send me something. The fact that she, by that point, had already figured out that I was the same Steven that had sent her a package for her 18th birthday only adds fuel to my theory.
• 𝟖.) 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐤𝐲𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐁𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟎): I’ve never told story until recently! Yeah, so, back in October of 2010, when Sumo Cyco was finally starting to come together publicly, Skye held her first eBay auction. One day beforehand, I got a message from Frankie on MSN Instant Messenger asking me if I had any pictures of Skye wearing one of the shirts she was selling. I did actually have a picture, and that picture ended up being posted on eBay for everyone to see. My personal theory is that Skye and Frankie were sitting around going, “Who could possibly have a picture of this shirt?” And then simultaneously, they both went, “STEVEN!” And I came through in the clutch. I don’t have the picture that I sent Frankie anymore, so enjoy this screencap I just took of Skye performing in the shirt that she was selling.
• 𝟗.) 𝐆𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐒𝐤𝐲𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐞 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐨 𝐂𝐲𝐜𝐨’𝐬 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫 (𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟗): Another Skye and Frankie moment! This one also involves another fan, Karl Goold-ainsworth, and it happened in the buildup to Sumo Cyco’s epic Download Festival performance. I messaged Karl on Facebook the day of one of their Download Festival Tour shows telling him to tell Skye I said, “Hi.” And just like Krystal, Karl went the extra mile for me. In the middle of a random afternoon, I received a video from Karl on Facebook Messenger featuring both Skye and Frankie, and it gave me a dopamine rush that I had sorely needed at that time. I’m ranking this one lower than the Halloween 2018 moment only because it doesn’t feature an appearance from Matt or a Skye family member.
• 𝟏𝟎.) 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐤𝐲𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 (𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟔): It took 12 years for this moment to finally happen, but it was so worth it. None of the other epic moments that I got to have with Skye Sweetnam in person happen without this moment happening first.

MUDVAYNE Could Be Releasing New Music Soon
In a new interview with The Oakland Press, MUDVAYNE frontman Chad Gray confirmed that he and his bandmates have been throwing around ideas for new music. The reunited metallers haven't released released any new material since 2009, which means we're coming up on nearly a decade and a half without a single fresh MUDVAYNE song. "We've already been working on some stuff," he said. "We've got four [songs] in the pipe. I've written each one of them probably three different times, 'cause it's like nothing's good enough. We're gonna keep pushing. We're all getting along really good. We're all talking. Hopefully we all want the same thing from our music, so we'll see. It's definitely the thing that makes the most sense to do now." MUDVAYNE kicked off its first headlining tour in over 14 years, "The Psychotherapy Sessions", last month. Support on the 26-city trek, which is produced by Live Nation, is coming from COAL CHAMBER, along with GWAR, NONPOINT and BUTCHER BABIES. (Such a great line-up) Are you a fan of MUDVAYNE? Are you looking forward to hearing new music from them? Are you going to see this show? #music #news #newmusic Source: https://blabbermouth.net/news/mudvayn... Water pollution
water pollution, the release of substances into subsurface groundwater or into lakes, streams, rivers, estuaries, and oceans to the point where the substances interfere with beneficial use of the water or with the natural functioning of ecosystems. In addition to the release of substances, such as chemicals, trash, or microorganisms, water pollution may also include the release of energy, in the form of radioactivity or heat, into bodies of water.
Types and sources of water pollutants
Water bodies can be polluted by a wide variety of substances, including pathogenic microorganisms, putrescible organic waste, fertilizers and plant nutrients, toxic chemicals, sediments, heat, petroleum (oil), and radioactive substances. Several types of water pollutants are considered below. (For a discussion of the handling of sewage and other forms of waste produced by human activities, see waste disposal and solid-waste management.)
Water pollutants come from either point sources or dispersed sources. A point source is a pipe or channel, such as those used for discharge from an industrial facility or a city sewerage system. A dispersed (or nonpoint) source is a very broad unconfined area from which a variety of pollutants enter the water body, such as the runoff from an agricultural area. Point sources of water pollution are easier to control than dispersed sources, because the contaminated water has been collected and conveyed to one single point where it can be treated. Pollution from dispersed sources is difficult to control, and, despite much progress in the building of modern sewage-treatment plants, dispersed sources continue to cause a large fraction of water pollution problems.
Domestic sewage
Domestic sewage is the primary source of pathogens (disease-causing microorganisms) and putrescible organic substances. Because pathogens are excreted in feces, all sewage from cities and towns is likely to contain pathogens of some type, potentially presenting a direct threat to public health. Putrescible organic matter presents a different sort of threat to water quality. As organics are decomposed naturally in the sewage by bacteria and other microorganisms, the dissolved oxygen content of the water is depleted. This endangers the quality of lakes and streams, where high levels of oxygen are required for fish and other aquatic organisms to survive. Sewage-treatment processes reduce the levels of pathogens and organics in wastewater, but they do not eliminate them completely (see also wastewater treatment).
Domestic sewage is also a major source of plant nutrients, mainly nitrates and phosphates. Excess nitrates and phosphates in water promote the growth of algae, sometimes causing unusually dense and rapid growths known as algal blooms. When the algae die, oxygen dissolved in the water declines because microorganisms use oxygen to digest algae during the process of decomposition (see also biochemical oxygen demand). Anaerobic organisms (organisms that do not require oxygen to live) then metabolize the organic wastes, releasing gases such as methane and hydrogen sulfide, which are harmful to the aerobic (oxygen-requiring) forms of life. The process by which a lake changes from a clean, clear condition—with a relatively low concentration of dissolved nutrients and a balanced aquatic community—to a nutrient-rich, algae-filled state and thence to an oxygen-deficient, waste-filled condition is called eutrophication. Eutrophication is a naturally occurring, slow, and inevitable process. However, when it is accelerated by human activity and water pollution (a phenomenon called cultural eutrophication), it can lead to the premature aging and death of a body of water.
Tumblr media
2. Solid waste
The improper disposal of solid waste is a major source of water pollution. Solid waste includes garbage, rubbish, electronic waste, trash, and construction and demolition waste, all of which are generated by individual, residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial activities. The problem is especially acute in developing countries that may lack infrastructure to properly dispose of solid waste or that may have inadequate resources or regulation to limit improper disposal. In some places solid waste is intentionally dumped into bodies of water. Land pollution can also become water pollution if the trash or other debris is carried by animals, wind, or rainfall to bodies of water. Significant amounts of solid waste pollution in inland bodies of water can also eventually make their way to the ocean. Solid waste pollution is unsightly and damaging to the health of aquatic ecosystems and can harm wildlife directly. Many solid wastes, such as plastics and electronic waste, break down and leach harmful chemicals into the water, making them a source of toxic or hazardous waste.
Tumblr media
3. Toxic waste
Waste is considered toxic if it is poisonous, radioactive, explosive, carcinogenic (causing cancer), mutagenic (causing damage to chromosomes), teratogenic (causing birth defects), or bioaccumulative (that is, increasing in concentration at the higher ends of food chains). Sources of toxic chemicals include improperly disposed wastewater from industrial plants and chemical process facilities (lead, mercury, chromium) as well as surface runoff containing pesticides used on agricultural areas and suburban lawns (chlordane, dieldrin, heptachlor). (For a more-detailed treatment of toxic chemicals, see poison and toxic waste.)
Tumblr media
4. Petroleum (oil) pollution
Petroleum (oil) pollution occurs when oil from roads and parking lots is carried in surface runoff into water bodies. Accidental oil spills are also a source of oil pollution—as in the devastating spills from the tanker Exxon Valdez (which released more than 260,000 barrels in Alaska’s Prince William Sound in 1989) and from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig (which released more than 4 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico in 2010). Oil slicks eventually move toward shore, harming aquatic life and damaging recreation areas.

Why Save Water?
There are three things (oxygen, water, and food) without which we cannot live on the earth. But the most precious thing is oxygen, water, and food because we cannot live without oxygen even for a second. Clean water is also important as we need it in daily activities, especially drinking.
Already the percentage of clean water was less, but due to the industrial activities, our clean water under the ground is getting dirty and polluted. Because of the lack of fresh mineral water has been sold in the local shops for many years. And, people are ready to buy it worth 30 to 35 Rs because they know that simple tap water may not be clean, especially in public places.
With the increasing rate of people’s carelessness (regarding water saving and safety) and population, it is sure that our future generations must suffer a shortage of clean water. A very little percentage of the earth’s water is suitable for drinking, and many people (at the place of water shortage) survive on much less water per day.
Percentage of Clean Water
Three-fourths of the earth is covered by water, from which 97% water is ocean water means salt water and is completely unfit for our consumption. The left percentage (about 2.7 percent) is fresh drinking water; however, around 70 percent of this is available as ice sheets and glaciers in Antarctica. So, we only have one percent of fresh water, which is fit for human use.
We need to practice water conservation on an urgent basis to make the presence of this precious resource in our life. We also need to stop contaminating the drinking water resources through the direct passage of sewage, toxic chemicals, and other wastes into it. The increasing rate of population, deforestation and rapid urbanization are increasing the need for clean water and leading to water pollution and scarcity.
Sources making Clean Water Dirty
The sources polluting the underground water are land runoff, drainage, seepage, sewage, atmospheric deposition, precipitation, industrial waste, etc. Such wastes get deposited into lakes, rivers, coastal waters, wetlands, etc., and meet the large water bodies and groundwater. Other water spoiling sources are excess fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, detergents, soaps, etc., from agricultural lands and residential areas. Acid drainage from abandoned mines and industries involved in making oil, grease, and toxic chemicals are also involved in making the water dirty and polluted. Such nonpoint sources are the leading cause of water quality problems.
Simple Ways to Save Water
There are various simple ways which we can use daily and save gallons of water daily. Following are save water techniques which we must use to save water at home and other places:
We should use shower heads with low-flow (also called energy-efficient shower heads), low-flush toilets, and composting toilets (instead of conventional western toilets as they use large volumes of water) or dual flush toilets (it uses very less water than others).Keep the tap close while doing hand washing, toothbrush, face wash, dishes, etc.Collect rainwater during the rainy season to use in toilet flush, watering plants, sprinkle in the garden, etc. Using raw water like sea water or non-purified water in the toilet is also good.We should be habitual of reusing or recycling wastewater. We should promote rainwater harvesting, using high-efficiency clothes washers, weather-based irrigation controllers, garden hose nozzles, low flow taps in wash basins, swimming pool covers, automatic faucets, etc., for water conservation.Water saving techniques should also be given priority in the commercial areas as it is a big area where gallons of water can be saved daily.Water-saving techniques in the business areas are waterless urinals, waterless car washes, infrared or foot-operated taps, pressurized water brooms, cooling tower conductivity controllers, water-saving steam sterilizers (in hospitals and health care units), rainwater harvesting, water to water heat exchangers, etc.The agricultural field is also a vast area where we can save more water daily if we follow water-saving techniques. We can use overhead irrigation for crop irrigation (using center-pivot or lateral-moving sprinklers), minimize evaporation, runoff, subsurface drainage, etc.Use of green manures, recycling of crop residues, mulching, animal manure, etc., in the field improves the soil organic matter, which again increases the water holding capacity and ability to absorb water (during torrential rains) of the soil.Water saving techniques are also promoted at the social and community level by the municipal water utilities or regional governments through the use of common strategies like public outreach campaigns, paying a higher price for increasing water use, restrictions on the use of clean water for outdoor activities like lawn watering, floor cleaning, car washing, etc. There should be universal metering for water supply to each home, just like electricity. This facility is only available in some UK households and Canadian urban homes.
Water saving techniques should be promoted among people living in the societies, communities, and villages, including business sections, as they are the main water users in a rough manner. Farmers, children, and women should be adequately taught how to use and efficiently save water. They must understand the value of water in their life. Clean water scarcity is not a problem of one country or continent; it is a global issue that needs to be solved globally by increasing awareness among people worldwide.

Water

This week we will be discussing water resources from Chapter 13 of Living in the Environment and water pollution from Chapter 20. Water is an incredibly important resource that we all depend on to successfully live and thrive in this world. Almost all of our daily activities depend on the use of water as well as our body's need for water to function properly. Access to fresh water is a global health issue, an economic issue, a national security issue, and an environmental issue. It is a health issue because “more than 3.4 million die from waterborne infectious diseases—an average of 9,300 deaths each day because they lack access to safe drinking water” (Miller 301). It is also an economic issue because “water is vital for producing food and energy and for reducing poverty” (Miller 301). It is also a national security issue “because of increasing tensions within and between some nations over access to limited freshwater resources they share” (Miller 302). And finally, it is an environmental issue because “excessive withdrawal of freshwater from rivers and aquifers has resulted in falling water tables, dwindling river flows, shrinking lakes, and disappearing wetlands” (Miller 302). Though freshwater does recycle naturally, we believe it is infinite and free, but this is not true. We have exploited this idea, therefore placing “little or no economic value on the irreplaceable ecosystem services that water provides” (Miller 302).
An issue that has arisen due to our exploitation of water resources is something called water pollution. Water pollution is “any change in water quality that can harm living organisms or make the water unfit for human uses such as drinking, irrigation, and recreation” (Miller 507). Water pollution can come from two different sources: point sources and nonpoint sources. Point sources “discharge pollutants into bodies of surface water at specific locations often through drain pipes, ditches, or sewer lines” (Miller 507). Some examples of this include: factories, sewage treatment plans, oil wells, and open-pit mines. Nonpoint sources are “broad and diffuse areas where rainfall or snowmelt washes pollutants off the land into bodies of surface water” (Miller 507). Some examples of this include the runoff from chemicals such as fertilizers from cropland and logged forests. There is a multitude of causes for water pollution, but the “leading cause of water pollution is agricultural activities; this is due to sediment erosion from croplands, fertilizers, pesticides, bacteria from livestock, and food-processing wastes” (Miller 507). Other causes include mining, sewage, plastic, and industrial factories, see Figure 1 for more examples of causes. The effect of this disastrous pollution is that it exposes us and animals to infectious bacteria, viruses, and parasites. The pollution kills fish, birds, marine mammals, and sea turtles, see Figure 2 for a graphic visual of the effects of pollution on animals. It destroys habitats and even affects animals' mating rituals, which can have devastating consequences and can wipe out entire species. Another effect of water pollution is that drinking any of this water that has been contaminated can “cause painful, debilitating, and often life-threatening diseases, including typhoid fever, cholera, hepatitis B, giardiasis, and cryptosporidium” (Miller 508).
Another incredibly important part of our environment is something called groundwater. Groundwater is the water found underground in the cracks and spaces in soil, sand, and rock. It is stored in and moves slowly through geologic formations of soil, sand, and rocks called aquifers. These aquifers provide drinking water for about half of the U.S. population and 95% of Americans who live in rural areas. Groundwater and aquifers provide the world with clean drinking water that allows us to survive, but when this groundwater is contaminated with pollutants the water is not safe. Some common pollutants are fertilizers, pesticides, gasoline, and organic solvents that can seep into groundwater from numerous sources. People who dump or spill gasoline, oil, paint thinners, and organic solvents onto the ground can also contaminate groundwater. Groundwater pollution is a hidden threat. More than 1.6 million people die from infectious diseases that they were exposed to via contaminated water. Reducing this pollution will require stricter laws and regulations when it comes to federal drinking water and water pollution. However, as of right now only 104 countries and territories have legal standards for safe drinking water.
Streams, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and the ocean are all heavily polluted from human activities and human life. Streams and rivers however have a special ability that because they are constantly flowing bodies of water they can “recover from moderate levels of biodegradable wastes” (Miller 511). This helps them break down the waste faster, but when they are overloaded with pollutants or there is a drought they do not have enough time to break the pollutants down. Lakes and reservoirs are less effective at breaking down pollutants. This is because they have low flow rates or no flow at all and this is crucial when it comes to breaking down the waste. Due to this, it can take 1 to 100 years to break down the pollutants which are not beneficial because the number of pollutants will increase intensely over time. The ocean, just like streams and rivers, can “can dilute, disperse, and degrade large amounts of raw sewage and other types of degradable pollutants”, but this can only happen in extremely deep waters (Miller 521). However, coastal areas such as wetlands, estuaries, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps receive the largest inputs of pollutants and wastes. This is mostly because the runoff of sewage and agricultural wastes flows into coastal waters. Wetlands, estuaries, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps are crucial parts of the environment because they provide ecosystem services that help keep our planet going successfully. For example, wetlands naturally improve the water quality, provide flood protection, and they control shoreline erosion. All of these aspects are fundamentally important so saving the wetlands and other coastal areas from pollution is incredibly important. The key to protecting the oceans is to reduce the flow of pollution from land, air, and streams emptying into these waters. Thus, controlling ocean pollution must be linked with policies for land use, energy, air pollution control, and climate change.

How could any solutions realistically be implemented in our economically driven world?
How can we make water conservation more profitable than water consumption so that people will actually make sustainable changes?
What would be the best way to educate the general public about water consumption and tools to decrease water consumption?
