first and foremost: this was our last inbox run on wednesday! from now on, we'll be switching to a monday & friday inbox schedule!

secondly, a reminder that our activity check will be coming SOON! it will be posted next monday, so you have until then to meet activity!

as some of you have noticed, we previously had an unofficial vraelgard discord server for members to join and meet others in the community! previously, we had not planned on having an official server, but after community feedback, we have decided to make a new official server. you are not required to join the server, but a link will be available on the blog to join, and for now you can find it HERE!!

please note that this is a new server, and if you were in the previous server, you won't be in this one yet!

last but not least, we have two new assistants for our moderator team, and we would like to thank everyone for applying! for now, i'll allow the assistants to introduce themselves!!

Hello! I’m one of the new assistants here at Vraelgard. You may know me around here as Vix, but you can also call me Phyllobates. I use she/they pronouns, and can be contacted on @vivixacious on twitter!

I write Miriam Shushkevich (OC) here already, and am also taking the role of our lovely NPC the Marquis Phyllobates (they/them). You may also remember me as Netzach (Lobotomy Corporation).

Given Marquis Dragonfly’s unplanned and rapid retirement, Phyllobates has been handpicked as a replacement for the aging Marquis. There’s rumors the Marquis’s health has been failing as of late due to poison...peculiar, but he requested Phyllobates be his replacement.

Phyllobates is a rather young noble in comparison to their uncle, presenting to the world with an airy, nonchalant sort of view. They’re easy to spot, given their propensity for vibrant color choices, as well as their habit for being a social butterfly. Standing at 6′2 and as thin as a whisper, Phyllobates’ most notable trait is the rainbow spectrum of freckles spotted across their face and body. On top of that, they’re vibrant makeup choices allow them to live up to their poisonous name, in a spectacular display of aposematism. They wear a lot of light, airy clothes, also in bright colors. Surprisingly though, they don’t seem to clash...

I’m thrilled to be here, and hope that I can help bring a lot of life to Vraelgard. I look forward to working for you all

Hey everyone, V here back at it again with introducing myself really badly! You can also call me Vee, or Xevin, or nerd, those all check too. I go by they/them pronouns, and the best place to catch me is on discord: V!#5504 or my current muses through IM or ask!

I’ve been around for a little bit first as Yuffie Finalfantasy, then Akihiko Persona, now Deadpool Marvel and Aaravos Thedragonprince, but now that I’m on the team I’ll also be occasionally writing the very tired, very busy Reaper Xevin! I love medieval fantasy, music turned up too loud, and playing videos james until 6 in the AM.

Xevin’s been a reaper for A While, and he’s still waiting on that promotion... though it probably won’t happen because his partner is nigh on uncontrollable when he’s not around. Xevin is a super hard worker: genuinely enjoys paperwork and logistics just as much as he dislikes casual, friendly socializing. He’s very much a to the point, by the books sort of guy, always willing to do overtime if it means the job’s done right. That’s probably how he got roped into dealing with this new role in the first place, Xevin is just convinced it’s a sort of initiation - the first step toward that promotion he’s been working to. He’s always dressed in black and white, always wearing a high-necked shirt and glasses, and there’s always some carefully styled white hair covering his left eye for reasons unknown to anyone other than his partner. His whole look and vibe is just Edgy Business Man, and you can spot him a mile away.

I can’t wait to help out the Vraelgard team, and any of y’all if you ever need anything! Here’s to some fun times and some funner memes!! (raises my glass of orange juice like gatsby in that one scene)

Consecration of the Raphael Talisman

Supplies:

Dagger

Wand

Bell

Orange Candles

Blue Altar Cloth

Incense Mix: Frankincense, Cloves, Cinnamon, and Mace

Holy Water

Grand Pentacle of Solomon (Drawn on White Cloth or Parchment)

Angel Evoking Seal (Drawn on Lamb’s Skin or Virgin Parchment)

Raphael Talisman (Drawn on a Circle of Metal, a combination of Silver and Tin, or Virgin Parchment)

Operation:

Declare the beginning of the ritual, “In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we humbly come with a pure will for the good of all. As this work enrichens us may it too enrichen our neighbors. Through the Love of Jesus Christ. Amen!”

Perform the Lesser Banishment Ritual of the Pentagram and then the Lesser Banishment Ritual of the Hexagram.

Purify yourself with fire saying, “by fire, I am purified”; if anyone else is with you purify them saying, “by fire, this child of God is purified.” Purify the space with fire starting at the East and going clockwise, “In the East I banish all beings of the air, vile and malignant, wishing to interrupt this work and may Light only enter herein.” (Do this for every direction and element). Place incense back on the altar.

Bless yourself with Holy Water, “by water, I am blessed”; anyone else should be blessed saying, “by water, this child of God is blessed.” Bless the space starting in the East saying, “blessings in the East, may all the goodly spirits of air enter herein!” (Do this for every direct and element).

Bow head with hands together in prayer. Walk clockwise around the altar 9 times reciting Psalms 147:1-3,

“Alleluia! Aggei et Zacchariae laudate Dominum quoniam bonum psalmus Deo nostro sit iucunda decoraque; laudatio aedificans Hierusalem Dominus dispersiones Israhel congregabit, qui sanat contritos corde et alligat contritiones illorum.”

Perform the Lesser Invoking Ritual of the pentagram and then the Greater Ritual of the Hexagram for Mercury.

Point the wand at the Grand Pentacle of Solomon and recite this invocation to activate it (+ means to ring the bell),

Hold your hands up int the sky holding the wand and proclaim,

“Archangel Raphael imbue this talisman with thy Gifts. In this hour that comes so rarely let this talisman do all the things that correspond to you: heal, reveal occult secrets, prophesy, make me industrious, give me eloquence and success, a strong memory, wisdom, help with my self-improvement, and attract riches to me!”

Pull down the Mercurial/Raphael energy into the talisman by drawing the wand your left hand down to pointing at the talisman. See a ball of energy surrounding it – the core of the ball blue and the outside orange. To bind the energy to the talisman vibrate “IMBUO” 9 times while still pointing at the talisman. Once done make the Sign of the Cross over the talisman and say, “Sic Fiat!” Stomp left foot.

Now you will bless the space with fire and water once again. Starting from the East say, “blessings to the East! Thanks to all the goodly spirits of the air!” (Do this for every direction and element). If you are performing the ritual with someone censor the smoke and sprinkle the Holy Water at the same time, but if alone censor first and then sprinkle the Holy water making a circle twice. You should say the consecration when you are censoring with smoke.

Walk around the altar 9 times counter-clockwise and recite Psalms 147:1-3 with your head bowed and hands in prayer,

Now license all Spirits to depart,

“In the name of Adonai, the Eternal and Everlasting One, let each Heavenly Being return to thy designation; let there be peace between us and be ready to come when you are called again.”

Perform the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram and then the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Hexagram.

Close the ritual space by saying, “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit our work is done. May all be at peace. Amen.” You may then collect your talisman.

Keep the talisman on you. If it is a parchment talisman be careful not to fold it. This is a very special talisman because of the rarity of the celestial event this monday.

Now, each of these three distinctions and grades—nefesh, ruach, and neshamah—consists of ten faculties1

corresponding to the ten supernal sefirot (divine manifestations)2 in which they originate and whence they descend.

The ten sefirot are subdivided into two general categories.

These two categories are: three “mothers,” i.e., three of these sefirot are termed “mothers,” for they are the source and root of the other seven sefirot, as a mother is the source of her offspring, and seven “doubles”—the seven divine attributes, called “doubles” inasmuch as each of the emotional attributes manifests itself in a twofold manner, as shall presently be explained.

Namely: chochmah (“wisdom”), binah (“understanding”), and daat (“knowledge”) are called “mothers”; and the seven “doubles” are [the emotional attributes known as] the “seven days of Creation”: chesed (“kindness”), gevurah (“severity”), tiferet (“beauty”), and so on, the other four being netzach (“endurance”), hod (“splendor”), yesod (“foundation”), and malchut (“royalty”).

These seven attributes are known as the “seven days of Creation,” for it was through these seven attributes that G-d created the world. Each day’s creation came about through a particular attribute: during the first day chesed was dominant, the second day gevurah, and so on.

Just as the ten supernal sefirot are divided into two general categories, so, too, with the human soul [and its ten faculties]; they are divided into two general categories: seichel (“intellect”) and middot (“emotional attributes”).

The [category of] intellect includes the three all-inclusive intellectual powers chochmah, binah, and daat (ChaBaD), while the middot, which bear the same names as their corresponding seven sefirot: chesed, gevurah, etc., represent the following emotions: love of G-d, dread and awe of Him, glorification of Him, and so forth.

Love corresponds to chesed (“kindness”), as they are, respectively, the internal (i.e., emotional) and external (i.e., practical) aspects of the same trait; the dread and awe of G-d correspond to gevurah, as they are its inner aspect; so, too, the glorification of Him corresponds to tiferet.

ChaBaD (the intellectual faculties) are called the “mothers” and source of the middot, for the middot are “offspring” of (i.e., derive from) ChaBaD.

At this point, it would be worthwhile to explain briefly the function of the faculties chochmah, binah, and daat (abbreviated as ChaBaD), mentioned frequently in the coming chapters.

Chochmah is the first flash of intellect. It is the seminal and inner point of an idea. This seminal point of intellect already includes within it all the details and ramifications of the idea, but as yet, they are concentrated and obscured. (This is analogous to a dot, in which the dimensions of length and breadth are not evident—all that is seen is the dot—although for the dot to exist, it must certainly contain length and breadth.)

Chochmah is also called barak hamavrik—the intuitive flash of illumination which is the beginning of intellectual revelation. For instance, we may observe how a person striving to answer an intellectual question suddenly realizes in a flash of intuition that the question can be answered along a particular line of reasoning. At the moment of illumination, he is as yet unaware exactly how the particular question is answered: he knows only that he has found an adequate solution to the problem.

Thereafter, the faculty of binah (“understanding”) comes into play. Through cogitation, binah apprehends, crystallizes, and clarifies the details of the idea which was obscured in chochmah, until the whole edifice of the idea, in all its length and breadth, becomes manifest. For this reason, the function of binah is described as meivin davar mitoch davar—“to understand (or deduce) one matter out of another”—i.e., that which was previously concentrated in the obscure, intuitive flash of chochmah is now revealed and understood.

After the person fully understands the idea with all its details and ramifications, he must then immerse himself in it, binding and unifying himself with it to the extent that he not only understands it but also feels it. Only in this way can he be affected by the idea; if his understanding points to the desirability of a particular thing, it will give birth to a love for it; if his understanding indicates instead the harmfulness of a particular thing, he will react with a feeling of fear and flee from it, and similarly with other emotions. The faculty with which one thus immerses himself in an idea is called daat (“knowledge”), which is etymologically related to the expression, “And Adam knew (יָדַע) Eve,”3 a verb which denotes attachment and union. We now return to the text:

The explanation of the matter (i.e., of the three intellectual processes described above—inspiration, cogitation, and contemplation) is as follows: that intellectual faculty of the rational soul that first conceives any matter (i.e., the faculty which produces the seminal point of an idea and the first flash of illumination, as explained above)

is given the appellation of chochmah [which is composed of the two words] כח מה—the potential of “what is.”4

It is a faculty concerning which one can only pose the question “Mah?” (“What is it?”)—for at this stage, the idea in question is not yet clear or comprehensible logically, since its details are still in potentia, emerging only at a later stage.

When one brings forth this concentrated idea from the potential into the actual, that is, when one cogitates with his intellect on the seminal point in order to understand a matter full well—

That is: when he ponders all the details which make up the totality of the particular idea in its length and breadth. “Length” involves the range of an idea; when one draws down a concept from a lofty level to a lower one (by way of a parable, for example) in order to make it more readily understood, he is “lengthening” it, giving it a greater range of accessibility, so that it will be more readily intelligible to a student. For a student whose capacity is more limited, one parable may not suffice; it may be necessary to provide a second parable to explain the first, thereby “lengthening” the concept still further downward. (As Scripture writes concerning King Solomon: “He spoke three thousand parables.”5 So great was Solomon’s wisdom that to explain one of his thoughts, he had to give three thousand parables; one parable to explain the basic concept, a second parable to explain the first parable, and so forth, until ultimately giving three thousand parables—an extreme example of the “length” of an idea.)

The “breadth” of an idea means the multitude of details which the concept comprises, as well as all its ramifications. For example, the logic behind a halachic ruling in the laws of kashrut may also apply to laws governing financial disputes.

This is the meaning of the word לַאֲשׁוּרוֹ (“full well”)—understanding the intellectual concept completely, in both its length and breadth.

[Thus, when one cogitates on a concept in its length and breadth] and delves to its very depths

as it evolves from the concept which he had conceived in his intellect (i.e., when he apprehends in a detailed manner the seminal point of intellect, which prior to his cogitation was but a nebulous point of chochmah),

this is called binah. (Binah is that faculty which elucidates the details of any concept and apprehends it “full well” and “in depth.”)

They (chochmah and binah) are the very “father” and “mother” which give birth to love of G-d and awe (yirah) and dread (pachad) of Him.6
