Kantelen Amsterdam, The Netherlands Amsterdam's iconic narrow canal houses tilt one way or the other. They became prominent in the 17th century among affluent merchants. The skewedness can be largely attributed to the aging wooden poles on which the houses are constructed. Another reason is they were purposefully made to lean forward so when goods are hoisted up using the hooks on the top floor of the house, the products are less likely to hit the house and cause damage.
