Bollywood Movies Part CCXI: The Mollywood Takeover Part XL
Tumblr media
In Savithri, Savithri (Samyuktha Menon) is a communist on the run and hiding as a servant to the lecherous Raghava Pilla (Joju George) in post independence Kerala. In Rachiyamma, Kuttikrishnan (Asif Ali) remembers his romance with the self-sufficient Rachiyamma (Parvathy Thiruvothu) who refuses to be beholden to anyone. In Rani, Cherukkan (Roshan Mathew) wants to have sex with his girlfriend Pennu (Darshana Rajendran) but worries about people finding out.
Aanum Pennum as an anthology about the relationships between men and women doesn't really work out. The best out of the three is Rachiyamma with a stellar performance from Parvathy Thiruvothu. The best part of Rani is Nedumudi Venu as Vasudevan and the ending, although the Eden allegory is too christian for my taste. Savithri is one dimensional and a bit boring. Favorite song is Kadha Padu (no subtitles).
Tumblr media
At the beginning of the pandemic, Sherley (Parvathy Thiruvothu) and her husband Roy (Sharafudheen) go to her father Ittyavira's (Biju Menon) house. There they deal with bureaucracy trying to get Sherley's daughter Sophie (Thejaswini Praveen) from her school in Tamil Nadu. Ittyavira decides to sell his house and the land it's on partially due to his Roy's business troubles and partially due to his failing health. However, before he can do it, he needs Roy's help to unearth a skeleton.
Aarkkariyam is a bit slow, but it's a good movie about family secrets. I enjoyed how life at Ittyavira's house was shown and how it compared to Roy and Sherley's apartment in the city. The relationship between Roy and Ittyavira was well done, which really made the movie work. All of the performances were good. Favorite song is Chiramabhayamee (English subtitles).
Tumblr media
In Majnu Lipakshi (Fatima Sana Shaikh) and crime boss Babloo (Jaideep Ahlawat) are unhappily married as Babloo is gay and he keeps disposing of the men Lipakshi tries to have affairs with. In Khilauna Meenal (Nushratt Baruccha) is the primary caretaker of her sister Binny (Inayat Verma). When they lose their electricity, Meenal begins working for Vinod Agarwal in the hopes that he will help get their electricity back. In Geeli Pucchi Bharti (Konkona Sen Sharma) is initially resentful of the inexperienced Priya (Aditi Rao Hydari) getting a job Bharti is overqualified for. Soon after they become friends, but when Bharti reveals her caste, things get complicated. In Ankahi Nats (Shefali Shah) bonds with Kabir (Manav Kaul) while dealing with her husband Rohan (Tota Roy Chowdhury) refusing to acknowledge that their daughter Samaira (Sara Arjun) is going deaf.
Ajeeb Daastaans is an anthology that purports to be about strange things but I submit that the actual underlying theme connecting all of the movies is betrayal, as they all feature at least one. Of these shorts, Geeli Pucchi and Ankahi are the best. While Majnu and Khilauna have good acting, their stories are lackluster. Favorite song is Sang Rehna (audio only).

Kamal Haasan's Indian 2 Shoot Stopped Midway At Chennai Airport For This Reason
Kamal Haasan starrer Indian 2 was being filmed at the Chennai airport. According to reports, the filming was stopped midway by the airport administration.
Kamal Haasan's Indian 2 is in its last leg of filming. The movie has been in production for more than four years now but is still one of the most anticipated films. The team was recently shooting for some scenes at the Chennai airport. According to reports, the filming was stopped midway by the airport administration.
The Newsmakers
Shankar’s directorial Indian 2 was announced back in September 2017. Principal photography for the film began in January 2019. It has since been shot in various locations including Chennai, Rajahmundry, Bhopal, Kyoto, South Africa and many places in India and abroad. Following an accident on the sets involving a crane in February 2020 that resulted in the deaths of a few crew members, filming was stopped.
Since then, production has been getting delayed due to a variety of reasons, including the COVID-19 pandemic, cost overruns and legal issues, until picking up again in August 2022. Now, the production has taken another hit. As per reports, the cast and crew were stopped from filming at the Chennai airport.
Who’s saying what
Reportedly, Indian 2 filming was taking place at the airport's departure area and permission was granted only for certain scenes that required to use the particular location. However, the film unit intended to shoot a scene at the airport bathroom area, for which permission was not obtained. The officials acted swiftly and shooting was halted. Since then, production sources have clarified that filming of Indian 2 is proceeding with all the necessary clearances. Reportedly, the team is paying the airport administration Rs 1.24 crore for shoot permission.
The makers plan to release Indian 2 on Pongal 2024. It is expected to be the costliest film in Kamal Haasan's career by far, given its scale. The movie is the follow-up to the 1996 hit Indian, in which Kamal Haasan played both the son and his father, with the latter dying in the film's climactic scene. Along with the late actors Vivek, Nedumudi Venu and Manobala, the star cast also features Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, Bobby Simha, Samuthirakani, Guru Somasundaram, Priya Bhavani Shankar and others.

So, I consider myself very fortunate to be a part of Mamaangam. "Period dramas are rare in Malayalam cinema. Malayalam cinema is focusing on movies with great scripts nowadays as well," she added.Īnu said she is very excited about her next movie Mamaangam, a period drama, starring Mammootty in the lead role. As long as the script is good, then I'd take it up. I am not very keen on being a 'heroine' in all the movies. Presently, I am looking at how comfortable I am with the script as well as the character. Now I'd like to focus on doing Malayalam movies. "Earlier, to get a foothold into the industry I would take up any movie. And this one was definitely interesting." Speaking about her future projects, Anu said she intends on focusing on Malayalam cinema at the moment. Nedumudi Venu had a unique perspective on acting, writes Sanju Surendran
I found out about Venuetan’s death and was completely numb. My association with Venuetan dates back to 2005, when I was a directing student at the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. I had decided to make my final year diploma film on the story of award-winning Malayalam writer Priya AS ‘Achhan’. Post scripting, we thought Nedumudi Venu would be the best person to play the role of…

Tamil Movie Review: Beautiful Sarvam Thaala Mayam 2019, GV Prakash High Point Movie
Tamil Movie Review: Beautiful Sarvam Thaala Mayam 2019, GV Prakash High Point Movie
Before Sarvam Thaala Mayam, my impression of GV Prakash is that he is a really good music director who has composed some of the best hits in the Tamil movie industry. I had never rated him as a good actor perhaps due to the types of roles that he has done in the past. My personal favourite is his composition for the 2010 Tamil movie, Aayirathil Oruvan titled “Maalai Neram” sung by Andrea…

#MoviesIWatch - Appunni (1984)

so i was having a discussion on representation in malayalam media and how its different from somewhere with a huge hindu supremacist population because in latter places it always end up in violence and how @rain-hat was saying how movies with a muslim man with a high caste hindu woman would be received with heavy backlash from the public now like it was in Urumi
and i was thinking on how there aren’t any huge public backlash in kerala that would be placed for releasing such movies, its mostly that those kinds of movies simply don't get made frequently at all,
which when i think about it is might be worse in some ways, because when you see violence and backlash you can quickly understand why the backlash occurs and understand which side to pick, but when its a silent steady stream of propaganda fed to you, you just dont realise how they manage to shape the media into their ideals
because i was thinking, surely Mammooty (old gen) DQ Fahad (new gen) etc are beloved muslim actors with power and influence, they would have a say in rejecting scripts that undermine their religion, and then upon more research i find out that actor nedumudi venu dissmissed the existence of the ‘Nair lobby’ ( that the upper caste was preventing the lower caste from having influential roles in cinema, which very much did exist) by claiming that non-nair Mammooty could not have been a big star if the nair lobby existed 😐. my bad, @rain-hat i apologize for my ignorance.
on one had bcuz there is no public outcry against representation, recent movies do explore the castism and the unfairness and the oppression in a very real light, and those movies, though few, are critically acclaimed films that everyone loves and holds dear. so the improvement in the field of media is not some 10 steps back process Because the the public WANTS such movies. The problem is the behind the scenes rich uppercaste producers and movie makers.
......but on further thought, it may not be as worse as i said because over 50% of kerala’s population is lower caste. the propaganda wont reach as far as they want it to because..... how long are the kids gonna get brainwashed on our own oppression???
which is why i think the rise of New Gen wave (post 2011), which replaced all the old uppercaste actors and filmmakers with New Actors, Script writers and Producers. New Gen do make hits after hits, making movies about issues and don’t sugarcoat them and win awards. like i have hope that it gets more diverse because the movies that talk about social issues SELL.
the cinematography, movie making skills and impeccable acting from the old gen is what the current new gen grew up with so they make movies with that quality but since its gotten more inclusive these new filmmakers talk about their own stories or the stories that they feel should be known by public, like, it gives me hope, and unlike the bollywood film industry, malayalam cinema IS thriving

#MarakkarLionoftheArabianSea #Review: Kunjali Marakkar certainly deserved a much better tribute. Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea Star Rating : ⭐⭐⭐½ Director: Priyadarshan Cast: Mohanlal, Pranav Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, Nedumudi Venu, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Arjun Sarja Duration: 181 minutes Storyline: The legend of Kunjali Marakkar, the Naval Chief of the Zamorin of Kozhikode, who led a valiant fight against the invading Portuguese in the 16th century Stars such as Arjun Sarja, Prabhu and Suniel Shetty all get roles that are interchangeable with each other, with no defining character. Character development suffers, in the case of Marakkar (Mohanlal) too, who does not even get a few worthy lines to deliver. Some of the lines even end up as unintentional humour in the most sombre of situations, while some seem out of place in a period movie. A few references to Priyadarshan’s own films are placed at inappropriate junctures, like when Marakkar asks Ayesha to jump off a rock, promising to catch her. The film’s promotional USPs were the visual effects by Siddharth Priyadarshan and Sabu Cyril’s production design, both of which are commendable by Malayalam cinema’s standards and limitations. The dated background music only serves to remind the viewers of the Hollywood movies that the battle scenes are directly “inspired” from. By the time one walks out of the hall, after a rather tiring three hours, one would struggle to recollect a single memorable line or scene, other than the ones filled with special effects. That the writers failed to elicit such moments out of a story with immense heroic and emotional possibilities, makes it an even bigger disappointment. Kunjali Marakkar certainly deserved a much better tribute. In the end, it is not about the crores that you spend, but about how well you manage to engage and move the audience. Despite the commendable special effects and efforts of the ensemble cast, a weak script ends up spoiling a storyline with immense heroic and emotional possibilities https://www.instagram.com/p/CXCJYJAs5UJ/?utm_medium=tumblr
