hey anon, let's imagine this together, shall we?

naruto grew up so lonely.

and sure, eventually he gained the respect and the renown he so craved, not only in konoha, but around the entire shinobi world.

but none of that was as important as the first person who made him feel like he belonged.

the person who made him feel like maybe a family wasn't totally out of reach.

so when that person starts acting weird, naruto wants to know why.

he asks, but the answers are evasive. i don't know what you're talking about. everything is fine. it's just your imagination.

but he knows that isn't true.

because he knows you like the back of his hand.

you were the first person to help him off the ground when someone knocked him down.

the first person to invite him over for dinner.

the first person who invited him to a festival, not embarrassed to be seen with him in public.

and even if you never lived together, naruto knew he could turn to you for encouragement and support when he struggled.

quietly, always; you were never one for being the center of attention.

but sometime after the foruth shinobi war, something changes.

he can feel it in the way he sometimes catches you smiling for no reason, or playing the cuffs of your shirtsleeves while dinner almost burns.

he calls your name and you snap to attention quickly, but not fast enough for naruto not to know something is up.

and you're always going somewhere, though you never reveal your destination.

he starts sniffing around when he can (and he thinks he is infinitely more sneaky about it than he is).

eventually, though, you take pity on him and drop the ruse, lead him right to the source of your sudden change in mood--the man seated by the desk in the rokudaime's office.

the moment you enter with lunch in hand, kakashi looks up with a resigned look on his face, already able to feel naruto's looming presence as he advances down the hall.

"i see you brought a guest today," he says, standing to lean across the desk and give you a swift cloth-covered kiss.

"i hope you don't mind."

kakashi chuckles the moment before naruto bursts through the door, all bravado.

"kakashi-sensei! what do you think you're doing?!"

you laugh as he yells, dressing down his former teacher until kakashi looks about ready to shunshin to the valley of the end.

"naruto."

your voice is calm, caring, but firm, and the blonde menace snaps to attention immediately.

"what are you doing with kakashi-sensei, anyway? did he trick you into bringing him lunch?"

you shoot kakashi an affectionate smile. "kakashi did not trick me, i promise. i am here of my own free will."

you chuckle and kakashi heaves a long-suffering sigh.

"we're togther, naruto," you say, "dating."

naruto isn't exactly sure how to feel.

of course he's happy for you to have found someone, but did it have to be kakashi. he's so weird!

and yeah, maybe he's also a great shinobi and a pretty good hokage (naruto would be better one day, of course, believe it!), but why on earth would you want to... kiss him... or... whatever else people in relationships did with one another.

his blue eyes glance frantically between your serene smile and the tense lines between kakashi's eyebrows.

he sighs, leans heavily across the desk until he and the rokudaime are almost nose to nose.

"if you hurt her, kakashi-sensei, my first decree as hokage will be to burn every copy of icha icha in existence. do you understand?"

kakashi hums thoughtfully, leaning back in his chair and tugging a familiar orange book from his vest.

"i understand," he says, "but that does mean you'll have to find all the copies."

kakashi's eyes flick to yours and he gives you a quick wink before disappearing in a puff of smoke, leaving a rather stumpy log in his place.

"kakashi-sensei!" naruto fumes, spinning in a wild circle as he shouts, "you better take this seriously! i mean it! if you hurt her, i swear i'l--"

"naruto."

he turns to find you still smiling, holding out a bento box.

he takes it, confused, the tension leaving his body when you shrug.

"no sense in letting it go to waste. you still have time to share lunch with me, don't you?"

his whole countenance softens.

of course he does.

naruto enjoys the meal immensely, and you laugh as he describes all the ways he's going to change the hokage's office when it's his turn to wear the hat.

"i think i can even fit a little ramen stand right over there in the corner if we get rid of some of these books."

you listen contentedly, glad you no longer have to keep secrets from naruto.

kakashi, for his part, very much enjoys the bento you left for him on the counter in your kitchen with a note that says, "thanks for understanding."

of course he does. he always will. and he has no plans to test naruto's promise to wipe his favorite book series from the earth.

doesn't mean he isn't going to hide away a few extra copies.

No it is not foreshortening.

Hi. Foreshortening is an art technique where an object or a figure is rendered from a certain angle, usually an unusual angle, which highlights its distortion; it's basically a visual perspective. Kishi certainly is very fond of rendering his drawings from weird angles. He uses other techniques as well, like fish eye lens technique, which is also used for visual distortion, it can be used to highlight an expression or a mood, or to establish emphasis or to create an eerie/menacing effect. It used to be quite popular in films at one point of time, it's not anymore. They are used for very specific scenes nowadays, and aren't as ubiquitous as they were once. Anyway. What would be a good example of foreshortening and fish eye lens? This.

Don't get tangled with SS's delusions and false information. They will say anything to sound smart but ultimately, it makes them sound really dumb.

Now look at this.

Where is the foreshortening? Listen to me carefully, don't doubt yourself so much, trust your instincts, they are there for a reason and Kishi's work only encourages them, any good storytelling does. SS will always be wrong. I have not seen even a single one of them say a single rational thing YET. Just brand it on your brain and enjoy the manga as it is meant to be.

Foreshortening is about visual perspective but it doesn't change the actual action. It has nothing to do with that. It's only a way of looking at something. Sasuke is very obviously embracing Naruto. His hand is Holding Naruto's shoulder and he is close enough to be able to whisper directly in his ear while their bodies are clearly touching properly.

Was Sasuke serious about killing Naruto in their reunion scene?

Now what's important to notice about this reunion is that Sasuke didn't go looking for Naruto. Naruto came looking for him. If Naruto hadn't tried to get in Sasuke's way, Sasuke won't have attacked him. Just like vote one. If Naruto hadn't followed Sasuke with ALL his might, Sasuke would have left Konoha without confronting Naruto. Which means that Sasuke only feels pushed to 'cut Naruto down' when Naruto waylays him. Because seeing Naruto coming after him does funny things to Sasuke. All his intentions about getting strong and following his ambition take a backseat. Seeing Naruto weakens his resolve and he tends to lose grip on his composure. When he sees the person he loves despite his better judgment, he tends to make all the wrong decisions, he becomes a self saboteur.

These couple of chapters were funny and kind of bittersweet because ONCE again, we get to see how Sasuke just CANNOT help himself when it comes to Naruto. And these few chapters only help to underline the fact that Sasuke simply is frustrated, not so much with Naruto, but his own resolve when he sees his 'one and only....friend.' Lol. It's really a pattern with him, like I have written here.

Anyway, let's get into the meat of it.

So Team Kakashi arrives on the scene and Sasuke notices Naruto and his gaze is stuck on him.

So damn much emphasis. Right away, the reader's attention is monopolized and MADE to focus on the tension between Naruto and Sasuke because of the bubbling anticipation. We know how they separated at the end of vote one, and we know it was very painful for both of them. We have so many questions. Are they answered? Yep.

Look at the visual language. They don't have to say anything and yet the reader can viscerally feel the tension between them. Naruto's angst and yearning. Sasuke's more stoic features frozen on Naruto's visage like a magnet. Kishi certainly knows how to render roaring emotions into the characters without having them say a single word. That's just a testament to how good an artist he is.

So after Sasuke acknowledges the presence of the team, he proceeds to mock Sai who has just tried to assassinate him, and whom he correctly interprets as his stand in, by stating how he wanted to protect the bond between him and Naruto. To which, Sai responds by saying that he has changed his mind about killing Sasuke because of Naruto. Naruto reminded Sai of his bond with Shin, which brought about his change and he decides to do his own thinking and not follow rules blindly.

And this affects Sasuke. Look at his face. Sasuke knows Naruto has that effect on people, because he experienced it himself. We only get to know this in chapter 698, but Sasuke clearly admits that seeing Naruto always reminded him of his bonds with his family, just the same as how Naruto reminded Sai of his important bond, Shin. So when Sai tries to bargain with Sasuke about protecting Naruto and Sakura's (lol) bonds with Sasuke, Sasuke tells him that was exactly the reason he cut them off. Meaning, he tried to get rid of anything, or at least attempted to, that came in the way of his goals. Which is exactly why Sasuke says this.

That "personal ties cause confusion....and make you weak."

He tells Sai that he has cut off those bonds and he only has the bond of hatred now, the hatred he has for Itachi.

The truth is that he is not entirely accurate in his statement, heh. And Naruto catches it.

He tried to kill Naruto in vote one but couldn't do it. But regardless, he claims to Sai that he cut those bonds off. Well, he cut them off with Kakashi and Sakura. But you see, he never cut it off with Naruto.

Which is exactly why, Naruto is PUSHED to say this.

Naruto righteously asks him if he wanted to really cut off those bonds, why didn't he kill him off at the valley of the end? He certainly could have. Very easily too, Naruto was unconscious. Naruto also knows that Sasuke couldn't do it because he was afraid. Meaning, he knows Sasuke didn't want to lose Naruto because he cared for him, he couldn't bear to lose Naruto. And look at Sasuke's face when Naruto very emphatically and angrily screams the sentiment out. He is perplexed, obviously a little vulnerable.

He switches his self preservation mode on to balance it out (Sasuke doesn't like to appear vulnerable) by acting stoic, and so he tells him that he spared Naruto on a whim, but Naruto isn't really buying it. Now, we know that Sasuke is lying about the whim part. It's ooc for him. And anyway, it makes no sense.

However the deed is done. A crack has appeared on Sasuke's tough exterior, Naruto has made it happen. Like always. Heh.

And so what happens. Sasuke glides down to hug his precious.

And then he flirts with him. Yes. Flirts.

Sasuke - Didn't you say your dream was to become hokage? What are you doing here following after me when you could have used this time training for it?

Subtext - Do you like me or something Naruto?

Naruto - How can I be a hokage if I can't even save a 'friend'?

Sasuke - Pff

Subtext - Lol. You are such a child Naruto.

When Sasuke glides down and embraces Naruto, it registers itself remarkably in the reader's mind. Why? Because Sasuke has already been established as a person who isn't touchy feely. In part one, it's only Naruto he finds himself comfortable with, physically. He likes his personal space otherwise. Why would he willingly hug Naruto and speak like some femme fatale? Kishi obviously wasn't trying to portray this action of his as platonic. Certainly not in addition with all the flirting.

Did Sasuke want to kill Naruto?

Well he never wanted to kill Naruto for the sake of killing Naruto. He only attempted it because Naruto caused his goals to get blurry. He fogged up his plans for revenge. Sasuke cannot think straight when Naruto is around. Hehe. It happens when something that you want stands directly in opposition to something/someone you like.

Regardless, he didn't come at Naruto to kill at this point. If he wanted to attack Naruto, he could have efficiently done it in other ways. Don't look anywhere else. All the pertinent information is in these couple of chapters themselves.

This is a Sasuke who has trained with Oro for two and a half years. Who knows all the ins and outs of fighting techniques. Look how he analyses and handles Sai's and Yamato's fighting techniques in a matter of fact way. What impression and information does it give the reader? That Sasuke is skilled, and confident as fuck too. Hell, the reason why Yamato gets skewered by Sasuke is because Sakura tries to show off and attacks Sasuke. He stoically proceeds to attack in return. And had it not been for Yamato, Sakura would have been a goner. Like always, someone needs to rescue her. Naruto, Kakashi, Yamato, Obito, Lee...heheheh.

But when with Naruto, he makes a whole show of unsheathing his katana, taking his time, as if savoring these moments with Naruto, and as expected, is stopped.

He just wanted to feel close to Naruto. Feel his presence closely. He has met him after two and half years after all. Remember how crushed he looked being separated from Naruto after vote one? Why wouldn't he want to get close to Naruto? After all this time of not seeing and missing his usuratonkachi?

He could have chidori streamed him right away, he wouldn't even have needed his katana to begin with. Like he did later to Sai and Naruto. Naruto was obviously incapacitated by it. But he chose not to. He chidori streams both Sai and Naruto, stabs Yamato, and then stares and keeps staring at a struggling Naruto. And then proceeds to enter his mind space where he meets kyuubi for the first time. He makes the kyuubi retreat. He, who is so analytical about his moves and he who is so thorough about keeping a close guard on the enemy, just cannot help but look at Naruto. And keep looking.

And what happens? The same thing that happens everytime when Naruto is around him. His concentration gets compromised. His goals get sabotaged. His intentions and rational thinking leave for lunch break.

And this is what frustrates him. No really. It does. He can't even get a straight answer from Naruto as to why he keeps following him, getting in his way, knowing that Naruto's reasons simply don't come off as commensurate with what he does, but Sasuke nevertheless gets embroiled in his feelings for Naruto and it gets his goat. He loathes when it happens, he loathes his own weakness, but it happens.

When Sasuke evades Yamato's wood style jutsu attack, he is again asked by an anguished Naruto to rethink his plans, as Oro would sooner or later take over his body. Sasuke has had it. So he emphatically tells him that if being strong enough to kill Itachi meant he would need to let Oro take his life over and over, he would do it and that's the end of it.

Yamato proceeds to attack Sasuke, but Sasuke has really had it. He defeated Sai so easily when Sai tried to attack him, he incapacitated Naruto. He even managed to subdue Yamato. But all in vain, because Naruto makes him weak. He was subdued by Yamato in return when he lost his concentration because it was fixed on his dobe. And he cannot be weak. Not if he wants to accomplish his goals. Yamato saying anything wouldn't have this effect on Sasuke. Why would it? He doesn't even really know him.

So Sasuke decides that he is going to finally take care of it. By legit attempting to kill Naruto. And if need be, the other team members if they interfere, which they obviously would have. Sasuke is done with his ties with Konoha. And he wants to simply erase them. Well, not with Naruto, as we come to know later. But in this scene, he certainly seems to make up his mind finally but Oro arrives at the nick of time and convinces Sasuke not to. And that's that. He disappears with Oro and Kabuto, while still staring at Naruto. CANNOT take his eyes off him, he can't.

It's pretty clear in these chapters that Sasuke is damn skilled, perfectly analytical and superlatively confident and if he really wanted to attack Naruto, he could have done it right away. He is obviously capable of it, like he did to Naruto later on with chidori stream. Or he could have used his katana efficiently like he did with Sakura who got blocked by Yamato which resulted in Yamato getting skewered. You don't even need to go where Sasuke used his chidori spear, which he used to attack Oro and Killer Bee.

The context of these chapters makes it clear as crystal.

(2) That anon seems to be equating fandom toxicity with shipping, when fandom toxicity has nothing to do with shipping. There's plenty of toxic fans that ship absolutely nothing at all. That anon being quite a good example... I don't think I've seen anyone so triggered by shipping in a while. I mean, most people don't stop shipping their ships just bc they don't become canon. Some people even are well aware they won't become canon. We still get our enjoyment and aren't a-holes, lime anon. Meanwhile, what do people like anon get? What do they want? A medal? I'm sorry to collect these, but thank you everyone for the positive vibes and kind words! I've been in jjk fandom before the anime and it has since getting bigger - and ofc getting worse too, sadly. And I've also been in numerous fandom over the course of the years, but this is the first time I saw someone so anti with shipping in general. Shipping is not even the main activity of this blog, as you all can see. itafushi is not even the weirdest ship in jjk fandom.

Everyone in fandom enjoys things in different ways, as long as you don't cause trouble for others, there's no "right" or "wrong". It's just a piece of media. It doesn't dictate your life. I don't and don't want to dictate others in what is right and wrong in this matter. But yes, as long as there is a fandom of it, shipping will most likely be a part of it. This applied to fandom everywhere, which use other language too. And harsh it may be, but we are here because we share the same interest on one stuff. And that interest will fade in time when we find new things to be interested in.

And also seems like one toxic anon attracts another and I'm turning off my anon ask for the time being. I've been considering doing that for a long time.

Please. I just want to be left alone doing my things. If you don't like me, don't like what I do, then please just block me. No one is forcing you to follow what you call "fandom-ruiner" here.

writing this was one long "i guess i like obito??" another uchiha i'm a fucker for rip me

going in (something like) vanadius’ order:

making tobi madara's age doesn't work (why vanadius thinks obito is logistically impossible but is fine with a founders’ era person being spritely a almost a century later is baffling bc even kishimoto doesn't go that far). they seem to want tobi to be izuna, i’ll focus on him

how would izuna be alive and not old as hell? he's madara’s age

sure, tobi being izuna is a neat reveal, but it would require a major overhaul of canon that raises a lot of questions

if tobirama didn't kill him, how do we get to the point of senju-uchiha collaboration that leads to the creation of konoha? if izuna survives, madara's behavior will be different. his priorities will be different. the initial peace came around because izuna died. without the formation of konoha and madara's alienation- which isn't certain if izuna is still alive- madara's defection isn't a guarantee. madara might not have gotten izuna's mangekyō- has there ever been a reciprocal implant? if the two of them lost their sight, that's a major difference (well, maybe, considering what madara got up to for a while). would madara have read the stone before he and izuna went blind? would he have been as impatient with hashirama? as easily manipulated? konoha would have been fundamentally different or non-existent if izuna had survived

“ancient, enigmatic menace" sounds cool, but in practice, what does it mean? we have black zetsu, so let's not assume that those traits make a character interesting lol

imo vanadius is missing the point with obito because yeah, he is still a schoolboy. this is the problem with writing a story that selectively acknowledges trauma. every boo boo and bobo the fool conveniently forgets that it also applies to characters they don't love. characters like, you know, the child soldier who was nearly crushed to death, then kidnapped and emotionally tortured for we don't know how long. of course obito acts like a kid. how can he mature emotionally after madara basically drove him insane? (here are the problems with logistics since the whole rin jinchūriki thing is a mess, yeah, but i’m not saying that canon's plot with obito was perfect)

i do agree that the love triangle on team minato doesn't matter, but i agree because there isn't one. obito has a crush on rin. he saw kakashi as a rival for her attention sometimes, but that's it. (if you want to go for the kakashi and obito shippy interpretation, the same holds true. you can't have a love triangle when there's no conflict.) if kishimoto had bothered to give rin a personality unrelated to kakashi and obito, obito’s devotion to her would have been more understandable

(you could argue that that's deliberate because obito only saw rin as his childhood crush, but you would be wrong because masashi kishimoto wrote this)

i didn't find obito's moments with minato moving either, but i did think, for a moment, that he and kakashi throwing down was going to be satisfying, but it got watered down because nobody gets to resolve anything on their own

the way obito became ~good~ again was lazy. i hate a forcible change of heart, especially right before a heroic sacrifice or whatever. it undercut obito's fucked up resolve to destroy the world and made everything he did even worse because wasn't even that devoted to it. naruto isn't similar enough to obito to justify such a massive change in so little time. they don't know each other, and their connections through kakashi and minato are weak

definitely agreed about kakashi having too much importance. i wish i could remember who wrote it, but someone said that kakashi should have stayed dead when pain attacked. i'm on the fence about that, but he shouldn't have had such a big role in the story

tobi's role in the massacre needed development regardless of who he was. why would izuna want to kill his own clan? why would madara- or would izuna freestyle like obito? why would a totally new character want to do that?

actually, the blank period did it and did it fine, but that storyline would be way too complicated to integrate into the main narrative

lol @ the idea that shippuden era naruto is fighting the ninja system. that disappeared with sasuke in part one. the caring about other people renaissance with pain was a blip

idk why anyone would suggest that tobi should be madara. again, you’d have to rewrite so much to make it work that the story would need to be fundamentally restructured. how would he still be alive? wouldn’t he still an old man? how is he going to keep up in a fight? is madara's cave setup not going to happen? does he not die? if he does, how does he come back?

tl;dr some decent points but overall, nah, i would not be agreeing

1. Describe yourself how you would describe a character you’re introducing

tbh this was the question i wasn’t looking forward to getting and i’d prefer not to answer =_=;;

8. Why do you choose to write?

For myself mostly. I normally only ship rare pairs (see any pairing i really rEALLY ship from voltron) and when i ship something, i usually have a specific dynamic in mind when i picture them in my head… basically i’m really really picky and so my motto is “if you want something done right you’ve gotta do it yourself” which is why a lot of my planned fics ended up happening.

I also write stuff for Vox since she ships rare pairs too :P

if someone happens to enjoy my writing, that’s just an added bonus i guess xD

9. Do you ever have plans to write anything other than fic?

I have a worldbuilding project which is mostly just for fun right now, and working on those skills, but i do have some ideas for novels written down in that project :>

Oh… um… not from Voltron, but my favorite Mass Effect fic (which is T’sovik cause that’s like my favorite pairing from Mass Effect) is That Hunts the Lonely Hill by ninaunn over on Ao3… it’s like… really good. I’ve been reading it as it updates since last January so…

18. How old were you when you started writing?

I believe my first fics were actually Avatar fics, but none of those ever saw the light of day xD i mostly wrote on word and I’m sure all of them were really really awful but i was only eleven or twelve so i had no idea what i was doing… i really started getting into writing (as one of my main hobbies) when i was fourteen because i started taking creative writing classes as electives in high school, and i took creative writing every semester for four years (as @voxiferous well knows since we were absolute menaces to the poor teacher our senior year cause like an idiot he sat us next to one another)…

unsurprisingly, most of the works i submitted for a grade for fanfiction… my poor creative writing teacher was giving me A’s on Naruto fanfiction and he had no fucking clue lol

19. Why did you start writing?

god that was like ten or eleven years ago like hell i’m gonna remember the actual reason i started writing… if i had to guess tho i’d assume it was a means of creative outlet??

20. 4 sentences from your work that you’re proud of

hoo boy let’s see =3=;; i’m really a bad judge of this shit so you get one of the ulaz and thace exchanges from the first chapter of Raised Amongst the Stars (which is posted over at Ao3 so) i think it showcases my love of dialogue and character interaction

this is more than four sentences but w/e you can’t get context with only a portion of the scene

“How is it looking?”

Thace’s voice held a tired undertone as it come over the com, but Ulaz didn’t comment on it. He stood on a rooftop opposite of the spaceport, monitoring the streets down below, while Thace remained about a block or so back, keeping out of sight with Keith. Ulaz had scouted ahead to determine what their best course of action was from here.

With the amount of security that was present, they would be lucky to get back to their ship without attracting suspicion.

“Lots of guards,” he finally settled on, ducking down and out of sight, pressing his back against the half-wall that ran along the roof’s edge. “I don’t know if our ship is compromised or not—”

“Kolivan’s been looking to dump that ship anyway. I doubt it would be missed.”

“Did you remember to wipe the logs when we landed?”

“No, Ulaz, I’m a complete idiot,” Thace said dryly, and Ulaz could almost hear his eye roll. “Of course I remembered to wipe the damn logs. I scold at initiates every day for forgetting to do less.”
