Nancy drew and the hidden staircase update#
Edna ran the daily business operations, while Adams dealt with publishers and wrote Edna became inactive when she married in 1942, and Adams took over the business. With her sister, Edna, Adams took over control of the Stratemeyer Syndicate after her father Edward Stratemeyer's death in 1930.
Nancy drew and the hidden staircase update#
Adams also oversaw other ghostwriters who wrote for these and many other series as a part of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, and rewrote many of the novels to update them starting in the late 1950s. She wrote the plot outlines for many books in the Nancy Drew series, using characters invented by her father, Edward Stratemeyer. Harriet Stratemeyer Adams (Decem– March 27, 1982) was an American juvenile book packager, children's novelist, and publisher who was responsible for some 200 books over her literary career. Nancy Drew has to protect her father as a man has shown up making threatening remarks about him and also identify him as well as solve a mystery in her friend Helen Corning's Aunt's house regarding strange happenings. The Hidden Staircase, The Nancy Drew Mysteries #2 (1930 and 1959)
This Nancy yarn was one of “Carolyn Keene (Mildred Wirt Benson)”’s favourite stories and I can see why. It is one of the earlier Nancy Drew Mystery Stories and is something of a sequel to the book that commenced the series, The Mystery of the Old Clock. Originally published in 1930, The Hidden Staircase was revised and updated in 1959. The villain is actually revealed fairly early in the book, a Nathan Gomber, believing himself to have been swindled in a land sale and seeking to recoup his losses from two elderly sisters, Rosemary and Floretta Turnbull, living in a valuable civil war era mansion called Twin Elms, by persuading them to sell their house to him. One of what would become a common trope in the Nancy novels, that of the falsely haunted house, makes its first appearance here, as Nancy stays with the terrified old ladies for several nights attempting to find out the cause of ghostly sounds and mysterious thefts and disappearances in the mansion. The most tense and interesting part of this story (which also involves a superfluous kidnapping of Nancy’s father) is how Nancy, who works solo in this adventure, eventually locates the hide out of the false ghost, Willy Wharton, deep within the unexplored interior of the neighbouring house, Riverview, and captures him. Nancy brings her prisoner to Twin Elms to confront the Turnbull sisters and, ashamed at his actions, Willy confesses his part in the attempt to terrorise the two women and tells them he is working for Gomber. He also reveals the villain has obtained the neighbouring property which is linked to the Turnbull sisters’ home by the secret staircase of the title, enabling Gomber to steal from their house undetected. Nancy leaves Willy to be guarded by the Turnbulls while she seeks to gain further evidence against Gomber in the other house. This she does when she discovers her kidnapped dad, held in the cellar! Nancy then calls the police and Gomber is caught and arrested, his plot to frighten the sisters into selling to him, revealed.
I like this story for its involved plot, subtle motivation, creepy setting and for the fact Nancy unusually solves this mystery without the help of her friends. Carson Drew’s kidnapping seems a little pat and why Gomber does this is never fully explained, but it does relieve Nancy of the job of having to piece together a case against the baddie.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Diary,
I should’ve never let Mindy convince me to start this operation.
Sure, it’s nice to have a steady cash flow, but nothing is more aggravating than everyone and their mother asking for doctor’s notes, report cards, prescriptions, and absence notes when I’m just trying to make it to fourth-period math. When I was ten, I expected to use my Nancy-Drew-inspired skills to unearth hidden staircases or find whistling statues, not help someone’s checked-out mom get a Xanax.
Yet I forged three (3) permission slips today. Why? Because, next to mysteries, I love the sweet smell of cash in the morning. Yesterday, I added $150 to the rainy day fund. Hopefully, when the weather’s right, I'll be inspired to buy a car and ditch Woodsboro. This town is fucked, alright. Just ask Chad, Mindy, Sam, or–
“Tara! Jesus Christ!” I rub my leg where her sneaker connected. “What’s your damage?”
“Are you done, Shakespeare? You said you’d get lunch with me like, fifteen minutes ago.”
Tara isn’t so great with patience. But, again, I am not so great at keeping track of time. “Yeah, whatever,” I say. “Let’s go see what they’ve cooked up for us today.”
I follow her through the winding path of tables, chairs, and teenage bodies. As we go, I collect bills from outstretched hands and replace them with papers of varying sizes. Tara turns to smirk at me. “What was the event this time?”
“Oh, you know. It’s report card season, and this school is not known for its stellar GPAs.”
“We just have you to thank for keeping it floating below a 3.0,” she teases. “Tell me, Y/N. Does all that extra brainpower of yours get used up matching the way people dot their i’s and cross their t’s?”
I roll my eyes at her. “Sure, Tara. Let’s just get some lunch. I’m seriously starving.”
We grab trays and join the line, aimlessly chattering about the day. Tara’s been my friend since the beginning of the year when I was the only new kid in a town struck by tragedy. We were the only new buyers in Woodsboro over the summer. The rest are still empty, the memory of last year’s Ghostface attacks having driven out long-time residents.
What’s surprising, though, is that the so-called “Woodsboro Four” are still here. Sure, Sam, Tara, Mindy, and Chad mostly stick together, but despite the terrible tragedy that they witnessed, they let me and Annika, Mindy’s current girlfriend, into their lives. I could never measure up to that. I’m just glad they want to be my friend.
I’m taken out of my musings on friendship when I feel someone’s eyes on my back. Without turning around, I recite my usual speech. “$5 for report cards, $10 for prescriptions and absence notes, and an extra $5 for rush fees.”
“Woah, um, tempting, but I’m not looking for any forgery.”
Confused, I turn around to put a face to an unfamiliar voice. The guy’s tall, almost as tall as Chad, with curly brown hair and brown eyes that widen when I meet them. “Sorry, I was just going to get my lunch, but you dropped some cash back here.”
For some reason, my voice is not working. All I can do is look up at him, suddenly captivated by how shy he seems to be. When I pause for a few moments too long, Tara reaches around and takes the money from his hand. “Uh, thanks. I’m sure my friend here appreciates it. Usually she’s more talkative.”
“Oh, god, yeah, sorry,” I finally get out, stumbling over my words. “Thanks.”
“No problem.” Suddenly, I think he remembers to be bashful and walks away without another word.
When he’s gone, Tara laughs. “God, Y/N, drool much? I’ve never seen you like that before.”
I flush red. “Whatever, Tara, you’re the worst.” I give her a playful shove and walk off to buy my lunch. I hand the money to the cashier, but all I can think about are those big, brown eyes, and I know I’m fucked.

I hate how some people's mentality is set that Nancy Drew is all about Locked rooms, keys and hidden staircases. (And henceforth the hate the show gets saying it's off the charts, or nothing like books) When it's so much more!!!
It's about a team... FRIENDSHIPS; a non blood related FAMILY that they never asked for. It's about family bloodline, the past, and secrets linked to it. And most importantly, it's about LOVE. Unconditional love that is worth sacrificing oneself so that that other person lives. It's about souls that are tangled for eternity.
So, don't just say Nancy Drew show is not book based, just coz you can't understand it.

Hii!!! I have a fun question.. What's your favorite episode from each season of Nancy Drew and why?
Ooh this came at the perfect time since I’m doing a rewatch.
Season 1: a tie between The Haunting of Nancy Drew and … the emotional scenes coupled with the acting just make it such a superb watch that just has a staying power on me. There are honestly too many to choose from though. Like I could argue that so many episodes are my favourite. Honorable mention to Nick’s episode early on in season 3 with finding the bonds that Tiffany left and the entirety of the reenactment of the night of Tiffany’s murder and also the hidden staircase plot with Simon. And now I'm rambling.
Season 2: Honestly, it may be the finale. Again something about those emotional scenes especially concerning Nancy and her own development always appeals to meespecially bc it's Nancy confronting this fear of finding out who she is and who she has become. I love this season so much bc it explores and counters the notion that people are inherently bad or evil.
Season 3: This is also a hard one. I will say that the demon of piper beach was a fun watch, especially Bess driving that bus in people’s dream states will never not make me laugh. I also just liked the break from the Temperance plot for a small second. However, again the finale of this season was so amazing and the performances were so incredibly strong. Maybe I just thrive on angst.
Season 4: a twist of events, but the Jumanji-esque episode might take the cake for me. It’s fun and camp and reminds me a lot of that season 1 light heartedness within a season that has a lot of heartbreak (literally). I also just enjoyed seeing Tunji and Nick get a moment to shine an extra amount.
Thanks for the question @flythesail :)
