von-schmollen-straße // essen südviertel
the defining aspects of essen on the wall of a typical post-war modernist house. It works best as a purely monochrome work, also in connection with the background.

stammheimer straße // köln riehl
this is a pub frontage in typical cologne post-war architecture of the kind that can still be found in many parts of the city. the neon lettering of a typical cologne brewery gives the rather plain façade its charm.

sankt engelbert
architects: dominikus böhm
completion: 1955
profaned in 2008
as a church, sankt engelbert is a characteristic feature of the südviertel of essen. the building is very simple, but its size alone takes up space, the windows are the only thing that loosen it up. the most striking decorative element is the simple window rosette at the front made of black stone, which contrasts very well with the red brick.

the uni-center in cologne sülz is the defining building for the surrounding districts and an omnipresent landmark when you walk around it. it offers different views at any time of day or night, be it through the colourful awnings or illuminated windows.

tile façade in green and white alternation. a door that doesn't match at all, but at least the curtains and blinds are tone-in-tone again. boredom that draws the eye.

when door and gate lattice and railing design counted more and the variety was greater than today's din-standardised boring versions. it is always nice to see that they are still appreciated and maintained.

the former odenthal brothers iron foundry, which produced manhole covers, now houses a vitage business called ode & dyck. it is nice that the lettering of the old factory has been preserved.

europahaus // essen innenstadt
former amerikahaus ruhr
architect: herman gehrig
completion: 1952
relief by herbert lungwitz
the former amerikahaus ruhr, which is now called europahaus and houses a cabaret, was built as an information centre to bring democratic culture and political education to the population of post-war germany. the building is in a very good state of preservation and continues to be the focal point of the square in the centre of essen.

buschgasse // köln südstadt
a successful post-war development on a street corner in cologne's südstadt. the white clinker bricks at the base level form a perfect unit with the natural-coloured clinker bricks and the balconies.
only these scooters are a nuisance. they now spoil the architecture in the city more than any cars.

a very simple brick facade of the post-war period, but just through this elegant. just without any frills and fuss.
and in the windows the reflection of the gründerzeit with its serial facade decoration.

rathausstraße // stolberg (rhineland)
already slightly aged and having survived the flood of 2021, at least on the outside, the facade of this office building in stolberg continues to exude a certain elegance. however, a lift that takes existing structures into account would be fine.

thieboldgasse // köln cäcilienviertel
even the simplest post-war modern buildings usually had individual door designs. it is always worth discovering them and marvelling at the imagination of the designers. here is an example from cologne's cäcilienviertel.

post-war tile design
every time I see the window I ask myself if the symbols mean something or if they are just the imagination of the designer. they are also the only colourful element on this otherwise drab grey façade.

shape and colour determine the design of the shop front of the glaziery. the craftsmanship practised here is reflected in even the smallest details.
hopefully they will never consider redesigning the façade, which really is a total work of art.
