oh and congrats to mahmood & blanco who despite singing awfully managed to snag a dignified 6th place (even if the song deserved more tbh..) 😬🇮🇹

top 10 so far!!
ukraine - jerry heil and alyona alyona with teresa & maria. absolute perfection love it love it mwah. i was already a massive fan of jerry and alyona's music and i'm so happy they will have a bigger audience in malmo ahhh 10/10 nothing i would change <3
spain - nebulossa with zorra. apparently the spanish terfs were mad about it?? idk i think it eats though, its funky and sparkly and we love to see abuelita serving. 9.5/10 because the studio version has weird vocals.
norway - ulveham with gåte. the song wasn't hooking me at first, but the more i hear it the more i love it. i hope it does well, it looks like people really like it!! 9/10 because i'm anxious about their changes to the verses, but it sounds rad and i'm excited to see the revamp!!
finland - windows95man with no rules! i want to love this song, but sara siipola is forever in my heart. mä oon paskana frfr. it's catchy, fun and ridiculous though, just a bit too soon after käärijä in my opinion. 8/10 i would have waited a year, but it is fun!
italy - angelina mango with la noia. fabulous name btw i shall henceforth refer to her as "mango girl." the song is pretty good!! i didn't tune into sanremo this year so i don't know what the competition was like, but the song's not bad! 8/10 i like it
estonia - puuluup and 5miinust with (nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi. insane name, by the way, and the longest in the history of the competition. like finland's entry, i want to love it, but something's missing for me. i'll give it time, i'm sure it will grow on me. 8/10 pure chaos /neu
slovenia - raiven with veronika. i keep seeing people calling her the slovenian lady gaga and i want to see it, but something about the song feels like a missed opportunity. i still haven't seen the lyrics, so maybe my feelings will change?? 8/10 she ate i'm just confused
poland - luna with the tower. i've only seen a short clip so far but i liked it, it was just a bit boring for me. 7.5/10 we're in the "bland europop" section now
lithuania - silvester belt with luktelk. i didn't watch their national selection this year either, but i've seen clips of this song. i'm not in love with it tbh. 7/10 sorry silvester. you have a funny name
luxembourg - tali with fighter. again, just bland europop. i'm happy luxembourg, but i wasn't expecting much since it's a tiny country. 6/10 i'm not really impressed
and remember kids: you can post about eurovision, but don't let the ebu take your money!! you can sign the petition to remove israel from the competition here.

Is sanremo over? How did it go! Did you have fun, did it go the wayyou wanted it to? :)
it is over i'm so fucking sad i feel so empty post sanremo depression is REAL but it's worse bc i don't have next year to look forward to bc they're gonna have a new host and director and i am Scared. in this economy. i don't trust anyone. i'm scared that sanremo will go back to demo-christian right-wing friendly land and then what. but yeah it was really good for some reason i didn't expect it to be as fun as it was this year? i wasn't thrilled with the contestants when we got the announcement but it was really good... was missing that achille lauro flavored gay activities on stage but yk. no gay kissing after what happened last year ig. BANNED
for what concerns the results. ehh. my three favorites didn't even get in the top 5 but most of my other faves did well so it's ok all things considered. can't believe mahmood didn't get in the top 5 i will Not be forgiving anyone for that, dargen got fucking NUKED to like 20th place and loredana was at least in the top 10 but i was ROOTING FOR HER SOOO HARD see my icon. that's her. mother. BUT! ghali got 4th place which is very good all things considered and two kids from south italy got 1st and 2nd, one of them bringing a song fully written in dialect which is a really big deal For Me and the other one being the first girl who's won in like a decade so it's good. it was the year of minorities who could give the fascist politicians a stroke just not in a gay way this time we were going for north africa south italy alliance mediterranean girlies rise UP!!!!!!
on a lighter and sillier note the now iconic historic host and his uhhhh. special friend. said their ship name w they whole chest & pussy in a song about how they're the greatest couple in the land and then when it was all said and done they left the building in a horse-drawn carriage looking out of a heart shaped window and kissed each other's cheek as it was riding off into the. sunrise given the time. i'm gonna miss them like air

Henny ranks Eurovision 2023 - before the show
i’m kinda late with this this year, i admit. reasons? I guess I can say i’ve been busy, but it’s not all, truth is i’m not that engaged about this year actually... of course there are songs i love, but it’s not a year where i struggle to make a top 10 you know? anyway. enough negativity. let’s take a look, shall we? oh and please not that the songs are not in a certain order within each category.
category: can’t we have two winners please?
Sweden - yeah i’m in my patriotic era again. this is euphoria chapter two, in a good way, and it’d be so cool if she won purely from a statistic point of view... howEVER........
Finland - wouldn’t it just be great with a winner that was... a little rough around the edges? dirty, gritty, would scare your grandma only to later make her nod and say it’s quite a bop afterall? and it’d be the proper reward for finland who has brought their absolut a-game to their national final for the past few years - even though they’ve in my opinion picked the wrong winner from it. until this year that is. yeah, i think i’d like that.
category: added to my playlist and played frequently
Norway - mgp really stepped up their game as well this year and sometimes i even question if queen of kings is my winner from it (there’s tresko, ekko inni meg, love you in a dream etc etc) but my god it just goes so hard doesn’t it? although WHEN are they putting the version with the intro on spotify?? WHEN!!
Slovenia - you know sometimes i forget carpe diem is a eurovision entry because it just sounds like something i’d hear from an average band in my library?? idk how else to describe it. i just love it. and i love THEM. bojan’s charisma is.... sigh
Austria - it bops and it’s so CLEVER i love it
Serbia - hello??? i’m obsessed
Portugal - as soon as the beat kicked in on my first listen i was hooked. it’s flawless. and it’s the first portugese entry i’ve been really engaged in since.... uh... i started watching?? obviously i’ve liked entries from them but i haven’t really cared. this time i do.
Czechia - go ladies go!! i really hope this will be as epic on stage as in the mv. please please please
Malta - this is a sort of recent obsession, i didn’t really get it right after the nf, so we’ll see how long this lasts but i’m always having fun listening to it
category: also in my playlist but not as frequent
Estonia - it’s beautiful! but maybe not so original. my winner of eesti laul was meelik /:
Switzerland - i actually don’t mind the lyrics and i love the chord intervals in the chorus
Croatia - chaotic fun. and sticks to your brain like glue. mamaaaa kupila traktora... SC!
United Kingdom - this song was like a bubble gum. lovely and fun the first few listens but i got tired of it kinda quickly, sadly
category: i can recognize the talent here but i guess it’s just not for me?
Latvia - i’ve seen so many people hyping this and everytime i listen it’s like yeah this is good! and then i don’t feel the urge to listen again
Spain - yeah the performance was captivating but... that’s where it ends for me
Italy - it’s nothing Wrong with the song itself but it didn’t grab me and i had so many other options from sanremo i’d rather see here than Another Male Italian Ballad and this time by a returning artist on top of it so uhhhh yeah
France - i’ve listened to la zarra before the contest so i had some hopes for her and they were not fulfilled )): i like the disco beat and the last chorus - because that’s when everything finally reaches a fullness it should have reached WAY earlier in the song. do you feel me?
Moldova - you know i think i just need a few more listens to this and i’ll get around to it
Ukraine - don’t have much to say about it but it’s alright!
Georgia - this is that kind of song that you only hear in eurovision but when you do you absolutely love it and she does have very impressive vocals, i gotta say
category: they’re fine i guess/i don’t care!!!!!!/no that’s definitely not for me
Belgium - song is kinda catchy i’m ngl. but i cannnnnNOT cope with his styling.
Azerbaijan - it’s cute! that’s about it
Albania - i’ve listened to this exactly once and it was alright but nothing core shaking you know?
Netherlands - this one i think is alright everytime i hear it and then i immediately forget how it goes after it’s done. i couldn’t sing it back to you know matter how i tried honestly
Denmark - yeah it’s fine
Cyprus - i don’t caaaare i don’t care it’s alright but i don’t caaare
Lithuania - ehhhhh why couldn’t we have had beatrich instead ):
Germany - i guess i see why people like it but yeah no this is Not my thing at all
Australia - same with this
Armenia - this could go in the other category above here but.. i don’t like it enough actually
Iceland - yeah no. i don’t get it
Greece - for the love of god couldn’t someone have paired him up with an experienced songwriter and/or producer here because there are many great ideas but they just sound like a mess? it sounds so unfinished?? and i think i really would’ve liked this if it just sounded more... polished. worked on.
Israel - again a mess of a song with too many ideas in it and a very weird build. can’t get around to it
category: good god no
Ireland - someone asked an ai to write the most generic song ever and this is what we got
Romania - dude. bro. no.
Poland - this could’ve been a very basic but somewhat ok entry had there just not been the whole story with how it was picked and what kind of person she is
San Marino - this song feels like a threat. and WHAT is with the singer’s posture?? STAND UP STRAIGHT jesus christ
and there we have it! how much do we agree?

Italy Comes Together!
A fun fact that a lot of people may know about Eurovision is that it was based off of the Sanremo Contest that happens in Italy. Since Eurovision started, and every time Italy participated, Sanremo would be the national final for them, with the winner having the option to go to Eurovision (sometimes they do say no).
Earlier today, we got the list of Sanremo participants. And there's A LOT to be excited for. First off, national finalist Mr. Rain makes a return in hopes to go to the contest. But that's not all! We have not one, not two, not three, but FOUR former contestants returning to Sanremo.
We have Mahmood hoping to return after two top 10s in 2019 (2nd) and 2022 (6th), Diodato hoping to go to the Eurovision stage to compete (because he was slated to represent Italy in 2020 until...well...you know), Il Volo hoping to win the hearts of Europe again like they did when they took the bronze in 2015, and my personal favorite, 2014's Emma hoping to score another personal favorite entry of mine.
So, who do you hope to see represent Italy and follow Marco Mengoni's footsteps this year? sound off in the comments!

ESC2023 Reaction Post
Just like the title said, I'm writing this post as I listen to most of the 2023 entries for the first time. So far, I have only heard Italy (of course), Spain, Finland, Serbia, Portugal (I just couldn't miss their national finals), and Norway (heard it in the wild).
My top 6 of these entries would look like this:
1. Finland: Käärijä - "Cha Cha Cha"
I've definitely caught the Cha Cha Cha fever! At this point, I've streamed it 240 times in less than a month. It's an instant dopamine boost, it hits several spots of my taste in music, the transition between the two halves of the song is seamless and reflects the lyrics perfectly (I recommend Eurovision Histories' analysis of the song, he explains it really well), Käärijä is such a charismatic performer and an absolute sweetheart, but most of all...
Tumblr media
2. Spain: Blanca Paloma - "Eaea"
I rarely cry over a song, so when one does manage to get my eyes wet, it must be special. The fusion between flamenco and a contemporary production, together with Blanca Paloma's flawless and intense vocals, make "Eaea" a contender not only in my ears, but also in my eyes, as the staging completes the package effectively. Hopefully she doesn't change it much for Liverpool!
3. Serbia: Luke Black - "Samo Mi Se Spava"
It seems like Konstrakta might have paved the way for a more experimental side of the Serbian music scene! I first heard "Samo Mi Se Spava" at Pesma za Evroviziju's final and, while I loved the dark electro-pop style, I was also left a little confused - maybe it was the vocals that I couldn't fully get? But with more listens, I've now warmed up to it. Its only flaw is that it's too short. Give me a 7-minute long extended mix with a drop going absolutely bonkers, please.
4. Italy: Marco Mengoni - "Due Vite"
Yes, it's a classic Sanremo-style ballad. But the artist can make or break this kind of songs with their way of singing, and Marco definitely makes it with his distinctive vocals and artistry. While he has a bunch of upbeat bangers and I would have loved him to show this different side of his music this time around, I really can't complain as "Due Vite" makes yet another entry we can be proud of. Forza Marco!
5. Portugal: Mimicat - "Ai Coração"
This keeps growing on me! Such a cute and classy song, retro sounding in the best way. Portugal is one of my favourite country in the ESC, and "Ai coração" is faithful to their brand. Mimicat is such an endearing performer and definitely sells the song!
6. Norway: Alessandra - "Queen of Kings"
It's 'last' as for now, but I'm sure it won't be last in my overall ranking! In fact, I can't see it dropping outside of my top 20 once I've heard all of the entries. Epic feel, pumping bass, powerful vocals - I wouldn't be surprised if "Queen of Kings" landed the second top 10 placement in a row for Norway. Bonus points for Alessandra being half Italian!
Needless to say, I really enjoy all of these songs. It feels so hard for me to imagine a personal winner other than "Cha Cha Cha", but maybe I'll be surprised...
Now to my live reaction to the remaining 31 entries: what I'm going to do is play ESCBEAT's Spotify playlist on shuffle without looking at the title, so I'll make it even more interesting for myself and try to guess which country's song is playing - with the exceptions of Armenia and San Marino, as they're not available on Spotify yet so I'll check them out individually on YouTube.
Armenia: Brunette - "Future Lover"
Ok, before the song starts, let me say that basing her song on Tumblr quotes is honestly iconic behaviour. Truly one of us. However I fear I won't be able to take it 100% seriously after reading this fact.
Alright.
After listening: you know what... it makes a lot more sense to me now. The first verse can be interpreted as her scrolling her dashboard, reading such posts and fantasizing over this ideal partner to do all of these cute and mundane things with. The second verse is when she gets hit by reality and acknowledges that she's spent so much time obsessing over someone who doesn't even exist, and that realization hits her hard. The music seems to explode together with the racing thoughts in her mind. Solid, r&b-tinted track, has potential to be a memorable moment on the Liverpool stage. Oh, and once again Armenia shows that they're capable to make a music video.
San Marino: Piqued Jacks - "Like an Animal"
I have already read the lyrics to that, and they are definitely Something™. Let's see if the music and the performance can make up for it...
I was expecting so much worse from what I've read around the eurofandom spaces? It's a pleasant, very well sung rock song. The lyrics didn't even bother me that much while listening, although they're kinda awkward indeed. Maybe they'll change them up in the upcoming revamp?
Now to shuffling the Spotify playlist.
Sweden: Loreen - "Tattoo"
Oh, this has to be Tattoo. The start is indeed a bit reminiscing of The Winner Takes It All! It's what Sweden can do best - a strong pop song with slick production, in which Loreen's personality and artistry is the added value. I wish she had presented something more experimental, but seeing how it went with "Statements", can we really blame her? "Tattoo" does sound like a jury winner, and it would surely be deserved. I'm sure it's even better live - I'll make sure to check her Melfest performance out!
Australia: Voyager - "Promise"
Have no idea of what this could be, but the sound is interesting. Hope the build-up does not disappoint.
Okay, it has to be Australia! I was expecting it to evolve into a full-on dance-pop song, lmao.
I'm digging this! "Dreamer" was a national final favourite of mine last year, and while I'm not sure I like "Promise" more, I still did like it a lot, and I can hear some common patterns between the two songs - poppier verses, the chorus suddenly getting heavier, and then the peak in the breakdown and the final chorus. Oh, and there's a short but sweet guitar solo in here! I wonder how it will be received on the ESC stage, as it might come across as confusing to some.
Slovenia: Joker Out - "Carpe Diem"
Is this Joker Out? I've been SO curious to hear their song, as I heard some of their back catalogue and it sounds really cool.
OMG I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. Such a strong indie-rock banger, reminiscent of what I used to hear on the alternative radio stations in the mid 00s, but still sounding fresh in 2023. Also Slovene sounds adorable together with rock music. It's been absolutely worth the wait! I NEED THIS TO QUALIFY OKAY.
Austria: Teya & Salena - "Who the Hell Is Edgar"
OH MY GOD YOU'RE SUCH A GOOD WRITER. Yeah, recognized it instantly. MASSIVE BOP ALREADY. Was... not expecting this opera bit.
POE POE POE POE POE POE POE POE POE POE POE POE POE POE POE EDGAR ALLAN EDGAR ALLAN
Everyone stand up for the new Austrian anthem. Honestly iconic. Loving it unironically, great production, love me some satire, and I trust them to deliver live. Hope they go bonkers with the staging. I feel like ranking these entries is going to be hell...
Switzerland: Remo Forrer - "Watergun"
Oh, piano intro.
Army mention. Switzerland, isn't it?
Not bad, just sounds kinda cliché so far... very nice voice though. Can't see myself replaying it. Probably going to end up in my bottom 10.
Georgia: Iru - "Echo"
This is a banging intro, I'm listening respectfully.
...Georgia?
There's going to be a drop, I hope so...
I'm... disappointed so far? Not really hearing the build-up I was hoping for. It seems to be a fan favourite, but I'm not getting it. Maybe it will grow on me, who knows?
Moldova: Pasha Parfeni - "Soarele si Luna"
ROMANIAN. Has to be Pasha. Another song I was eager to hear!
THE DROP. THANKS FOR MY DAILY DOSE OF DOPAMINE. THIS IS SO GOOD HELP. The bass, the flute, the backing vocals, everything. This might be my favourite Moldovan entry ever. Pasha Parfeni came on this bitch mad as hell. Welcome back!
Azerbaijan: TuralTuranX - "Tell Me More"
Automatic voice message? This sounds kinda unserious idk why.
Oh, it has to be Azerbaijan.
I'm glad they left the artists more creative control this time around, but this is really not doing it for me. It sounds like the demo to some 90s song. My last so far. I fear this won't do well and the delegation will go back to Melfest rejects...
Ireland: Wild Youth - "We Are One"
We take our first breath and then we exhale. King of teaching us how to breathe. Can't figure out which entry this is, but it sounds cliché so far.
Oh, Ireland. Wild Youth, what have you done? I already knew their song "Can't Say No" and it's so good, are we sure it's the same band? It's like they came together and decided to deliberately write the most stereotypical ESC song. It's a no from me.
Latvia: Sudden Lights - "Aijā"
Interesting beat, wonder where it's going to go from here. Oh, guitars.
5/4 to 6/8 tempo transition? A bit confusing but in a good way, I'm enjoying it a lot! Definitely original. Could it be Latvia? I've been VERY curious to hear it.
Well, he's saying Aijā now so no doubt. First impression is really good already, but I feel like I'll end up being obsessed!
Malta: The Busker - Dance (Our Own Party)
Funky pop, nice. Enjoying it more and more as it progresses, and that sax? *chef's kiss*. It's sensual, retro but there's also something a bit futuristic about it at the same time? Still not sure about what it is, even now that the song is coming to an end. Kinda want to say Malta? I'll figure this out by exclusion. What's sure is that it slaps.
(Spoiler: it was indeed Malta)
Romania: Theodor Andrei - "D.G.T. (Off and On)"
Is it Romanian again? Thought Romania's entry was in English, so this is surprising. And it's pretty good? This was one of the entries I just couldn't figure out the vibe of from the eurofans' comments, and I'm positively surprised honestly! Was expecting it to be maybe more upbeat, definitely was not picturing this jazz-rock fusion. Oh, turns out it's bilingual. I don't know how memorable it will be in the mix, but it's solid. Such a diverse lineup so far, it's shaping up to be a stronger year than I thought!
Albania: Albina & Familja Kelmendi - "Duje"
Oh, this lady CAN vocalize! Something in the Albanian water...
I was expecting this to be more ballad-y for some reason but it's making me want to shake my ass. I feel like something in the production/mixing is holding it back a bit, though. Overall it's Albania doing Albania, and I can't complain.
Iceland: Diljá - "Power"
Iceland time, I think? I'm enjoying it a lot so far. EDM hasn't been particularly successful at ESC, but she has a lovely voice and her winning Söngvakeppnin suggests to me that she can deliver live, so this could be a dark horse!
Denmark: Reiley - "Breaking My Heart"
Very modern production for this and vocoder for this next song. Okay, this is probably Denmark. It's most likely not going to be one of my favourites, but it's a personal taste thing. It's a solid pop song, hope he can deliver it live.
Estonia: Alika - "Bridges"
Now a lovely tone of voice being accompanied by just a piano and strings. I've lost count of which songs are left to listen to, and while I'm at the last chorus, I'm still struggling to figure out which country this is. WAIT IT'S ALIKA FKFHFKFHDKDH. Girlie said "bridges" a ton of times and I didn't catch it lmao. Really liked it though! It could stand out in a less balladful year like this one.
Czechia: Vesna - "My Sister's Crown"
FINALLY HEARING VESNA'S SONG!!!! This has been so hard to resist BUT GOD HAS IT BEEN WORTH THE WAIT. I've been listening to their music for some time and I was so excited when they were announced for ESCZ. It's what I was expecting from them and more: a gorgeously sung, very well produced folk-pop tune, and the rap verses are such a great surprise! Up to my top 5 you go.
Belgium: Gustaph - "Because of You"
Gustaph delivers some good old eurodance, and I can tell this is going to be a sort of guilty pleasure for me... except I do not, in fact, feel guilty. It's the good kind of dated. Good job on bringing out the 90s kid in me!
United Kingdom: Mae Muller - "I Wrote a Song"
Sounds like slick pop so far. Oh this is building up nicely.
Yes, the UK delivering a quality, very radio-friendly host entry. They seem to be determined in changing their course, and hopefully we'll see a competent enough staging to bring out the entry's potential!
Greece: Victor Vernicos - "What They Say"
Is it Greece? Cute song, I just think I'm not the audience for it. He's really young and this seems to be his first performance on a big stage, so I'm a bit worried about how he might cope with nerves... But then again, there have been 16-year-olds who did amazing on the ESC stage, so fingers crossed!
Croatia: Let3 - "Mama ŠČ"
CROATIA TIME LET'S SEE
This is as all over the place as I was expecting, it's far from a musical masterpiece but it's clearly not meant to be. They're just vibing, and I support that.
Cyprus: Andrew Lambrou - "Break a Broken Heart"
What in the Imagine Dragons is this? Oh, that's Cyprus. This is pretty good, I just don't see myself coming back to it much. But I feel like it's the kind of song that might be elevated a lot by strong staging.
Poland TVP: Blanka - "Solo"
BEYBAH ITS KAINDA CRAYZAH.
...yeah. It's a song. I get those who say it sounds like a Margaret song, but it's also giving me early 00s vibes. At the same time, while I'm a slut for early 00s pop, this is giving me nothing. And the context around it makes everything worse.
Israel: Noa Kirel - "Unicorn"
I've heard "Unicorn" is a messy song, now I'll get to witness it for myself. So far it's a respectable dance-pop entry, but that "power of the unicorn" sounds so random ngl.
Oh well. This is definitely a song meant FOR a staging. The breakdown after the repeated "do you want to see me dance?" line reminded me of kpop a bit. The ending was... so abrupt?
Netherlands: Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper - "Burning Daylight"
This might be the Netherlands' entry? You can surely hear Duncan Laurence in it. I was afraid it would sound too forced as a song and a duet, but it's flowing well so far. However I'm not a fan of what the drums sound like. They sound... buried? I liked it the most until the second chorus.
Germany: Lord of the Lost - "Blood & Glitter"
Metal? In MY Eurovision Song Contest? Love to hear it, especially from Germany, since it seemed like they were stuck in their safe approach to the competition. As for the song itself... maybe I'll warm up to it with time, but on a first impression, I like the intro and the verses a lot, the chorus not as much. The ending was great!
Ukraine: Tvorchi - "Heart of Steel"
Oh, what's this? Slightly off-beat chorus, very interesting!
Right, Ukraine! Tvorchi use their host entry privilege to bring something we've never heard at the ESC before, and definitely a change of pace from the folk-driven songs of the past couple of years, proving the richness of this country's music scene.
Lithuania: Monika Linkytė - "Stay"
ČIŪTOOOO TŪTO
Another returnee! Sweet ballad, really pleasant vocals. Turning into more of a midtempo now, with sort of marching drums. I can't remember which country is in which semi, but I wouldn't mind this in the grand final at all!
France: La Zarra - "Évidemment"
So far, so French. And yes, it's a compliment - I'm a French pop slut. It's now surprisingly evolved into pop-funk, and I'm loving it! France is truly on a great streak (STILL MAD ABOUT FULENN OKAY.) - maybe we'll see them win in the next few years?
Overall: what a year! I was planning to make an initial ranking, turns out I'm too overwhelmed right now. As the years go by, the songs seem to be less meant for a contest, and more as a bunch of stand-alone solid and diverse tunes that happen to compete with each other, therefore it feels unfair to choose some over others. I'll take my time to warm up to them, and see which ones I will come back to the most, which ones will grow on or off me.
I think Finland is still my favourite, though.
Most likely to end up in my top 10: Czechia (definitely top 5), Slovenia, Latvia, Moldova, Malta, Austria

I miss when library books used to have little paper pockets inside with a list of all the people who borrowed it and when... I hate that this is now exclusive knowledge of librarians. I do care that a miss Mariana borrowed this book in 1985 and then Dario in 1997. They're my brothers and sisters

Clay Season: Who Are You and What Have You Done with My Faves?
The Clay Challengers and Why They Matter
Tumblr media
Court Philippe Chatrier, the central court for the French Open/Roland Garros (📸 ATP official website)
Those who follow this Tumblr account know how frequent I (the user behind this) watch Challengers. Waking up at 6am for a clay Challenger match, double-screening or replaying while away just because a particular Challenger is on clay, or even watching her random faves trying to nail the clay court game. Even outside clay, it’s the same situation. However, the peak is here: the clay season.
Remember how Juan Pablo Varillas, who was a qualifier last year, took 2 sets off Felix Auger-Aliassime right in the first round? Or how Bernabe Zapata Miralles made it all the way to the fourth round, defeating John Isner (of all people) along the way? These are just one of the examples on how deep the clay Challengers are. They are widespread, not only the European but also the South American Challengers.
Now, how many clay Challengers do we have until this point, where are we at the time of this writing, and why following (even if just a little bit) these Challengers can be beneficial to your clay season tennis-watching?
Loaded with Clay: The 2023 (Notable) Clay Challengers
Tumblr media
The ATP Challenger Tour’s tweet to welcome the April clay Challengers (📝 ATP Challenger Tour’s official Twitter)
Starting last March, there were several notable European clay Challengers, indoors or outdoors, that took place. However, in April, the number keeps increasing except for South Korea’s own Challenger swing, which returns to April this year from last year’s September post-pandemic. One notable indoor clay Challenger last March is Szekesfehervar Challenger, where Hamad Medjedovic took the title after defeating Zsombor Piros in straight sets. When tallied, there are 35 clay Challengers scattered across Europe and the Americas (North and South), some of which are filled with people preparing for the French Open.
By the time this piece was written, for example, 3 of the Challengers scheduled for this week were held on clay (Barletta, Murcia, and San Luis Potosi). The spreading of these Challengers not only enabled the players inside the direct entry or qualifying zone to prepare for Roland Garros but also for the ranking range way below that. Furthermore, 8 Challengers offered the 2 highest points (125 & 175), which are listed as follows:
Mexico City Open in Mexico City, Mexico (125; won by Dominik Koepfer)
Sanremo Tennis Cup in Sanremo, Italy (125; won by Luca van Assche, who then ascended to the Top 100 upon his semifinal victory)
Elizabeth Moore Sarasota Open in Sarasota, Florida, United States of America (125; to be played in April 10-16, 2023)
Oeiras Open 125 in Oeiras, Portugal (125; known as Oeiras 3, to be played in April 17-23, 2023)
Aix-en-Provence Challenger in Aix-en-Provence, France (175; to be played on May 1-7, 2023, during Madrid M1000’s second week)
Cagliari Challenger in Cagliari, Italy (175; to also be played on May 1-7, 2023, during Madrid M1000’s second week)
Bordeaux Challenger in Bordeaux, France (175; to be played on May 14-20, 2023, during Rome M1000’s second week)
Turin Challenger in Turin, Italy (175; to also be played on May 14-20, 2023, during Rome M1000’s second week)
The depth of the clay Challengers not only enabled the players to prepare for the French Open, but its flexible availability throughout the season enabled them to grow their game even further. While it often takes time for them to grow their game off-clay, especially those who only have the clay court available to them, some showed they can go beyond clay with minor adjustments needed. Some of the players inside the Top 300 even started their journey from these clay courts, such as those from South America, where its impacts are currently felt across the general tennis circuit.
Legion Sudamericana and Its Impacts
Tumblr media
Legion Sudamericana (📸 Tenis con Ñ via Canal Tenis)
Throughout the season, even way before Roland Garros, South America has its own Challenger circuit called Legion Sudamericana (also known as Legion Sudam). This was initiated by Chilean tennis legend and former World No. 31 Horacio de la Peña in 2021, which aimed to create more opportunities for especially South American players at the Challenger level and increase their exposure throughout the region. As the circuit grows, they comprise not only the ATP Challenger level but also 12 male and female ITF World Tour Tennis tournaments each by its first year. Furthermore, they will involve the tennis legends across the region as part of their attempt to give back to their communities by running these tournaments, an idea they (and current South American players) also welcome.
In a chat with the ATP, de la Peña stated that the talk with the South American players and the necessity to grow the game there are the key of the Legion Sudam initiation. This was reflected in the inaccessibility of tournaments outside of their home countries, hence the chance to develop in the circuit from the conditions close to home. He also stated that Legion Sudam could also bring the South American tennis federations together (including but not limited to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia). Beyond clay, there are also several hard court Challengers, some leading up to hard-court Slams, such as the Temuco Challenger at the end of 2022 leading up to the 2023-opening Slam, the Australian Open.
By the end of 2022, in the ATP sector alone, Argentinean players won 23 Challenger titles, where 10 of them were won in Legion Sudamericana. Furthermore, while at the beginning of 2022 14 South American players partook in the Australian Open qualification rounds (in comparison to 7 in 2021), the number in 2023 increased almost three-fold than in 2021, where 20 South American players partook in the Australian Open qualifiers. Furthermore, some of them currently making their marks in the European clay Challengers, such as Mariano Navone, who broke through the Girona Challenger quarterfinals (l. Pedro Martinez). Interestingly enough, some also made their mark in the South American clay 250s, which included Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who reached his first-ever main Tour finals in Santiago (Chile) right before Indian Wells this year. Ranking-wise, as of the week when this piece was written (February 3), 12 players from South America are inside the Top 100, while around 25 additional players are ranked across the Top 300. Some also received wild cards through their home main Tour tournaments as a result of their performances here.
A true growth, which could possibly increase as time goes by, apart from a whole lot of discovery whenever one watches the South American Challengers (personal note: no regrets traversing the time zone here). Should be even deeper now, with more tournaments taking place nearby. What an impact for just their first 3 years alone, and this is far from over for South American tennis. It is just the start of something great there.
What Should We Expect in RG Qualifiers?
Tumblr media
The Roland Garros qualifying rounds (📸 Roland Garros official website)
Considering the depth of the field during the clay season, several things can be expected in the clay season: (1) A breakthrough/breakout from someone who has yet to go deep in the main Tour before; (2) A comeback coming from people who tried to rediscover their form during the clay season, and; (3) For those who hung on in the Challengers, an answer to the long wait of finally qualifying through a Slam. However, taking into account how only one Challenger tournament is available during the qualifying rounds of the French Open, it would make sense that everyone eligible will play in the qualifying round, hence increasing the chance of either three to happen during the early rounds.
Reflecting from the 2022 draw, Bernabe Zapata Miralles finally accomplished his clay breakout before being defeated by Alexander Zverev 7-6(11), 7-5, 6-3, defeating the 23rd seed John Isner in a five-setter in the previous round. Camilo Ugo Carabelli, even though he was eliminated in the second round after the preceding marathon, came from a long way thanks to his Legion Sudam runs way before (finals in Santa Cruz and Tigre 2 Challengers, for example, before heading to Europe afterward). Somehow, several Challenger frequents who in one way or another break through or hung on well, were also a qualifier last year, such as Giulio Zeppieri (who went on to two consecutive hard court Challenger finals in early 2023), Jason Kubler (who become a main Tour mainstay inclusive of his Australian Open doubles title with Rinky Hijikata), Chun-Hsin Tseng (who eventually made it to the ATP NextGen Finals at the end of 2022), Norbert Gombos, among others.
This year, the depth did not stop there as the likes of Luca van Assche already won 2 clay titles (one outdoor and one indoor) and Juan Pablo Varillas trying to make their mark, alongside Daniel Elahi Galan, who is currently competing in Houston (250). Even deeper when Ivan Gakhov clinched his first Challenger title ever (even though Gastao Elias had to retire by the end of the second set), signifying the chance is finally there when he is on; or Andrea Vavassori, who qualified for the main draw in Marrakech and now awaiting his second round match (due to unplayable conditions). This could be explored way down with several known people having their best games on clay, such as but not limited to Hamad Medjedovic, Oleksii Krutykh (who primarily played clay Challengers instead before he broke through in the Australian Open qualifiers), or even Zdenek Kolar (who bothered Stefanos Tsitsipas during the second round of French Open last year, when he is on).
To close this piece, a belated welcome to the clay season, where the depth of the field is always available to be explored. Watch, follow, and/or track Challengers, everyone, before asking ourselves “Who are they and what have they done to our (main Tour) faves,” which has been a recurring question every clay season, no matter what tournament it is before its peak in Roland Garros. They are a gateway through the main Tour (and Grand Slams), no matter if one is young and trying to break through, hung on in the middle, or those attempting to make a comeback, and they are here to stay.
