Fixing Gabriel's Writing via a Corruption Arc

Like it or not, Miraculous considers Gabriel Agreste to be a loving father. If he wasn't, then you wouldn't get things like the season five ending or this bit from Queen Wasp:

Gabriel: (guilt-ridden) I don't want to break our promise, but… I can't keep putting our son in danger. Style Queen was supposed to be my masterpiece… but even she failed. I feel like I've done all I possibly could, you know? I'll never be able to fulfill my wish without Ladybug and Cat Noir's Miraculous. (Scene shows Emilie in her coffin) Forgive me, Emilie. I'm giving you up, Nooroo.

But this side of him only shows up in big dramatic moments. When it comes to his more general writing, he's a full out cartoon villain and terrible parent, which is why I've said there's a lot of valid ways to write him. His character is wildly inconsistent. This is a problem that is easily fixed via an actual corruption arc where he goes from somewhat decent parent to monster. There's a couple ways to do this, but here's how I'd do it in the context of keeping canon mostly intact:

Early seasons needed to make Gabriel come across as more openly grief stricken. Really highlight the fact that Emilie's death changed something major about him and his relationship with his son. This is one of the reasons I like a more nuanced Chloe. If you let her and Adrien be actual friends, then you can have her make statements to indicate that Adrien used to be quite close with both of his parents and that Gabriel used to be a good father. You can also have Adrien make statements like this to Plagg, I just like the Chloe angle more as she's more blunt while Adrien is more likely to hide his pain/focus on the positives.

Have Gabriel be unwilling to send akumas to areas where Adrien is. Episodes like Riposte should be impossible as Gabriel will be wholly unwilling to let akumas go after his son. This also lets you justify Adrien being locked up. As is, Gabriel just comes across like a jerk. If he's only banning Adrien from going out in order to keep his son safe? Well, he's still a jerk, but at the very least, he's a jerk who worries about his son's physical well being. Origins saw Adrien sneaking out of the house, so keep that element and make this be the reason he gets caught up in akuma attacks.

As time goes on, Gabriel gets more desperate and more willing to take risks. Lots of things could trigger this such as Ladybug always resetting everything, making him feel less concerned about hurting others. After all, he'll fix everything with his wish and, if he fails, then Ladybug will do it for him. There's really no way to lose here. Style Queen could become a turning point where Gabriel finally willingly put Adrien at risk and he feels awful, but make that also be the closest he's ever come. Have Gabriel decided that risking Adrien is worth the cost if it brings them back Emilie.

After that, things start to go downhill. Gabriel draws away from his son more and more due to guilt, but he's convinced he's in the right because he wants Emilie back so bad. The ends justify the means and all that. This can lead into several different types of endings, but the general feeling of Gabriel's final ending should have an element of pity. He's a villain, but he's a villain many could easily become.

This is the kind of path canon needed to walk if they wanted the season five ending to feel realistic. As is, it's going to read as total nonsense to most fans because they're going to go off of the way Gabriel was played in your standard, monster-of-the-week episode. They're not going to think about those core characterization episodes that were supposed to define Gabriel because those episodes are just too uncommon and too antithetical to the way Gabriel tended to be written.

But I love how you draw dipper in general and your art in particular! Is it possible you could do a little tutorial on how your process goes?

If you don’t want to, I understand completely. I felt really hesitant asking this lol. Anyways, love your art!!!

I'm not the *best* at talking technicality, and certainly not about drawing Dipper; I have three distinct styles when dealing with him, that being Billdip Dipper, Canon Dipper, and AU Dipper, all of whom have entirely different purposes both visually and narratively. This results in some pretty inconsistent representations:

That being said! I'm totally cool with going over my process with you! Layout, technique, brainstorming, all that.

Generally speaking, I like to start my digital work on paper. Nothing crazy, just a basic idea that captures the pose, expression, and clothing (these things are destined to change by the end).

Notice the cloud of dirt kicking up at his feet. Look how I position one arm out while the other pulls farther back, and his hair blows from his face. There's a clear emphasis on motion here, both in body language (feet turned against the force) and added attire (Pinetree cloak flowing back, dust cloud at his feet, etc.)

This design is destined to change, but for action scenes like this, it's good to begin with an expressive foundation, so that once we start chipping away at and remolding our concept, we're building off of a design that encapsulates the *scene* we're wanting to convey. That is, no matter how much we shave off, we still have a strong foundation to reference towards and lean into for inspiration.

The next step is transferring our rough sketch into a digital setting.

This is where I tinker with the lasso tool, maybe take reference photos of the exact pose I had in mind. Here, I'm just breaking down my original sketch on a tablet. I readjusted the feet's position, pulled that other arm in to his chest, and straightened his arm out for a more powerful pose.

The next step focuses on pushing the pose and correcting anatomy errors.

Alright, cool! Now he's not just bracing for action, he's *jumping* into it. The back arm's pulled in like a fist, his shoulder bunched up close to his ear. We see how his body's twisted at the torso, chest out, legs stretched, arm extended.

Notice too how I utilize my shapes to empower the pose. Front arm and leg, extended. Lots of straight lines. It *curves* because of muscle and fat, but outside of that, they're pointed in a distinct direction. Contrastly, his right side curves at the hip and follows subtly up to his chest. This helps emphasize his lean into whatever he's attacking, sort of like a bow.

Now we've added details! You'll notice I've changed a lot of my initial design from my rough-sketch to fit more into the style and personality of Dipper in this setting. Since he's, you know, a "Pinetree," I figured his clothing should reflect it. I'm still working in pencil at this point, blocking out the general shapes of what I want, but not really exploring my options.

The cloak follows a slight gust, his hair flows back, the mushrooms on his shoulder lean out from the action, but these are still only guidelines. Keep it loose! Explore things! Have fun with it!

Next step, Inking. Digital art is *very* forgiving, so I'm a lot less concerned about moving forward without a full idea of my vision. This is usually the step I'm most inspired at because it allows me to go back over my loose sketch and add those minute details that excited me so much. I do not recommend moving forward without full confidence in your initial sketch when using traditional art! YOU WILL CRY!

Clothes: changed. Pose: changed. Details: expanded on.

This is where a bit of knowledge in anatomy is really going to serve you well. Bridging the gap between sketch and ink has always been very difficult for me, and it's due in part to those uncertain, not-quite-right bits I have to build off of from my initial sketch.

It's good to keep your rough draft light and fluid so that they capture the emotion and general pose of your character, but it's also important to keep in mind how you'll have to balance *maintaining* that level of expression while incorporating more realistic aspects of their design.

Take for instance Dipper's left foot that went from being tucked up under his butt, to being in a more braced position- like he's about to land, or skirt to a halt. As a loose sketch, it captures the motion very well. However, incorporating muscle and kneecaps and detailed shoes brings out a lot of the visual flaws. Proportion and angle become a serious issue if you aren't entirely sure how a particular body part would flex/squish/shorten in a particular position. The more realistic you go, the more jarring your mistakes.

This is, of course, not me saying you're forbidden from drawing your characters with a leg under their butt with big, meaty thighs. It's *actually* me letting everyone know that I tried working with the pose, building on it looked weird, and I decided to take a different approach. You are 100% allowed to try something else if your initial plan doesn't work out.

This step is where we adapt and improve. Our digital rough sketch didn't really capture the full power of his motion. His cloak kinda billows out like "Yeah, I'm a cloak, I billow gayly." It's flat, hollow, uninspired. Here, you're looking at photo references of Pinetrees, both real and not-real. You're gonna have to make it look like needles and branches, while *also* being a flowy bit of clothing.

For this, keep in mind how *cloth* moves with a more exaggerated, majestic rough sketch to overlay atop our failure of a branch jacket. Die.

See how despite the spikey pine needles, his cloak follows a distinct pattern? Additionally, this coat works in 3-dimensions. There's an outside and an inside, and it curves like a dome around him. It floats behind him, curves in front of him, lifts up, dips down. Really, it's up to you, but always consider your work on the third plain.

ALSO! Very important: Keep an eye on your line weight! Seriously, this took a long time for me to get a firm grasp of. Not *shading* really, but put a bit more emphasis on those bent spaces with darker lines. See that bold line connecting his thigh to his glutes? And the one behind his knee? DEPTH!! IT ADDS DEPTH!!

And *here* is the final product! This is the shading section, arguably my favorite and least-favorite part about my drawing process. Working in black and white, you don't really have to worry about getting every little shadow on your character. Just shade what needs emphasizing; everything with a shadow gets an added layer of depth as well. This is the part that gives your work an additional POP.

Consider too that shading isn't just solid black, even if you're working in black and white. His arm and under his hood are pretty solid black, but the interior of his cloak is far more textured and light. We see where it's darkest at his sides, but leading out, it lightens into distinct markings that (in my opinion) are visually more appealing. Using this tool is ultimately up to you, though.

Alright I think I’ve sent a ask in before and you answered it, I’m not sure if I’m just repeating myself but if I am feel free to ignore!

Alright I wanted to talk about changes in the gerudo culture, now naturally culture norms will change and fade as time goes on. But with the gerudo I can’t help but feel that they were forced to change much of their culture just to appease the other races.

Like why did they stop training Molduga? Why did they change their style to be more feminine etc.

Personally I feel like they were forced to change their culture so they wouldn’t get attacked. Why? Well example the sheikah, the sheikah are a tribe very close to the royal family. They will take out anyone who is a threat to the royal family, correct? Well who used to actively oppose the royal family, the gerudo.

I believe the sheikah still have a prejudiced against the gerudo because, you cannot find a single gerudo in kakariko village. You can find gerudo npcs outside the village thought, on the dangerous rode. Wouldn’t it be easier and safer for them to just cut through kakariko village? Unless there was still bad blood

I’m sorry to bother with my my insane ramblings I just wanted to share and I felt this place appropriate to share my thoughts.

Hey, thanks for the ask!

I mean, regardless of what actually did happen in canon, if anything did, I have to say that BotW, and then TotK's internal narrative regarding the gerudos feels rather worrying to me --for several reasons, some of which you do mention here.

The gerudos, by virtue of having the strongest culture that differs from hylians, is the one that is also the most dynamic in these games' shared reality (so TotK's mythical past, BotW, and then TotK modern era), the one that is the most malleable and ongoing internal change.

The first time we see the gerudos, historically, they have a certain political structure that seems to rely on kinghood, have certain skills related to war (the molduga situation), and even have fashion sensitivities that are relatively different to modern era's gerudos (the mohawk, etc, and I Will Not mention the ear situation for the inconsistent mess that it is). Then, the whole shenanigans with Rauru happen, we see the Sage of Lightning having a fashion sense that feels closer to what we know, and we get to see active collaboration happening.

Fast-forward hundreds-to-thousands of years later: not only are gerudos vassal to Hyrule pre-Calamity, but, while their town is still closed behind walls, the gerudos have a strong cultural focus on seeking (mostly) hylian husbands. We get to hear about the younger generations pushing against the strong rules keeping the city closed, and that the walls aren't as closed as they used to be.

In TotK, not only is the actual language evolving (so even if old hylian seems to have been a thing, the speed of language evolving is to be noted imo), but we see clear examples of the ancestral rules being challenged to the point of near annihilation. By the time we leave the gerudos behind, two hylian men have snuck inside the walls/forced their presence upon them, and we have heard of at least another group who have been working for years to make them bend the rules for their sake. Zelda came around and influenced their war techniques, and even their ancient legends get recontextualized as involving hylian men with the Eight Heroin, or as monstrously evil and something to seek forgiveness for in the case of Ganondorf. Subtextually, I'd argue we are assisting to a culture being assimilated in real time. It might be portrayed as a good thing, as old, useless or even arguably bigoted traditions being cast aside, but I still have to insist that while gerudos are yielding their cultural identity under (mostly) hylian pressures, hylians spend the *entire game* rediscovering and reinforcing their own culture and pushing forward a cultural heritage that is thousand of years old --even reinjecting lost elements of its roots into its prosperous future.

And, yeah. It's kind of worth noting at least.

Chu, you ever have those moments where you're looking back at your comic and you see a little mistake? I get that all the time with my comic and I beat myself up for it like an idiot even though there's not really much of an issue at all.

Yes, I do. For the entire time I’ve been doing Slightly Damned, I tried my best to keep everything as consistent as possible. However, just like everyone else, I am an imperfect being. There’s a lot of clumsy wording, bad jokes, and dumb art mistakes that inhabit the archives of Slightly Damned.

But that’s okay. They’re not huge inconsistencies that make gaping plot holes (yet? 💦). They’re signs of growth. If I didn’t make those mistakes in the past, I don’t think I would have learned as much as I have. 20 years later, maybe my art isn’t superstar material to the comics world, but… well, I think my teenage self would think I’m pretty cool.

I just try to make every page reflect my best work. It doesn’t mean every page is better than the one that preceded it. There are ones that feel like they didn’t work out, or panels where I was just like “Aw hell, I don’t know!! at least the reader will know what’s happening! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED”.

Looking back at this massive, 1100+ page archive, it feels WILD to think that I could have made everything consistent. My drawing and writing styles have changed several times. I’m not even the same person I was when I started. My perception of the world and people around me is so different now. And they will probably keep changing as I get older.

If you’re feeling super stressed out because of your mistakes, try thinking of it less like “I have to make everything correct” and more like “I’m going to do my best to lay out a fantastic groundwork for the adaptation”.

That makes it sound like your comic being adapted is the goal, but I really don’t like that way of thinking. Comics are uniquely beautiful. What I mean is more like, even people reading your work will interpret it through their imagination. In this case, “the adaptation” would be what people think and feel from seeing your comic. Of course it’s fine to try to be consistent in order to avoid being confusing. But little bumps aren’t going to deter people from really enjoying what they like about your work.

I promise that your most favorite thing in the world is probably loaded with mistakes. They just don’t matter much to you because the part you like is way more important. I know it’s tough, but if we can forgive our favorite works for their shortcomings, then it makes sense that we should forgive ourselves, too. We’re all just doing the best we can.

Sometimes people like your work not just because of what you’ve done, but because they’re excited about what you’re going to do next.

Hi! I was wondering if you could do the same concept (Sanemi w/ reader from present era), but with the other Hashiras? I don’t know if your requests are on at the moment, forgive me if it’s not !! 🥲

With my requests it depends. I have a very inconsistent schedule so it’s a lottery whether I have time and energy to do a request or not. I think I didn’t state that in my main post, about time to do it.

Nonetheless HCs are quick and fun to make so I’ll be more than happy to do this one.

Shinobu

She’s more than interested in your phone. She’s naturally a very analytical person so when she has the opportunity to see something new she’ll never miss it.

Shinobu is the most interested in all of your health apps. When you tell her that you had a watch that was connected to your phone and sent data about your steps taken, heart rate, kilometres run etc., she’s mesmerised.

No wonder that people in your times live longer when you have all this help.

Yet, she’s kinda concerned. When she sees the sheer amount of apps on your phone and when you tell her about how many people in your time have such devices she gets an uneasy feeling. Would you manage without it? Well, you’re doing it right now, with the phone nothing more than a sad reminder of all that you’ve lost but still… she stares at the small device with an unpuzzled look and at the end of the day you don’t know whether she liked it or not.

One thing for sure with Shinobu here. Even if she can’t decide whether she likes such invigilation, when you tell her about modern medicine, life saving technology, specialised people, unimaginable things that one can do to save another life…

Shinobu turns to the partly opened door, facing the darkness outside. She has a small, knowing smile. All of your stories assured her that what she fights for is worth it.

Tengen

Duh, that man is down for music. Even if the speakers in your phone are not the best, he's so interested in what you have saved in Spotify.

How can it be that so many songs are stuck in that small device, how did they do it? Those new sounds and melodies.

He starts to overenthusiastically ask you about your favourite music style, how it was invented, what artists do it, why do you like it, what’s it characterised by. Like with a small child, the questions never end.

Luckily, you remembered that when this world sucked you in you had your earphones in your pocket. Only when you bring them to Tengen can he really experience what modern music is like.

He’s interested in something fast and electronic first coming (with your help) to the conclusion that the bass is juicy. Nonetheless, he enjoys pretty much anything that you suggest.

Unfortunately the amount of your downloaded songs is limited so that’s all you can show him but at least you can tell him about the instruments that people came up with.

Tengen doesn’t have any deeper thoughts about your phone apart from what you showed him. When you showed him various apps at the beginning he spotted that you quickly closed one of them and kinda hid some things before him.

The man figured out that this device is somehow a part of your privacy and that’s not something to pry on.

Mitsuri

She was quick to spot the same thing as Tengen but unlike him she started to ask questions. It was hard to resist her big puppy eyes. It also felt safe and fun to talk to her about your exes and crushes.

You quickly became a giggling mess when you shower her photos and texts, narrating about your previous life.

She was very interested in how people dated in your world so you filled her up on everything.

Mitsuri was fascinated by the amount of freedom and lack of boundaries that you could have. She actually wished the same for herself as it was suffocating to live in such a strict community.

Watch her fall down from her seat when she hears about Tinder.

You can’t really show her but you can tell her how it looks and Mitsuri asks you a couple of times whether you’re not making fun of her.

It’s like matchmaking but you’re free to do whatever you want. Amazing.

You two smile and giggle at the dumb little things and snicker quietly about how Obanai’s profile would look like.

Rengoku

Subway surfers.

Pou.

Some other old games that you never uninstalled and thank gods.

This man is clicking and poking and talking to that Pou hard. He’s quick to use your phone as soon as you let him.

It amazes him how the screen reacts to his fingers. You did tell him how it works but deep down in his head he kinda thinks it’s magic.

You can actually play turns with him, try to see who will win in the various small games.

Unfortunately, Rengoku being a slayer has damn good reaction time and soon you’re overpowered by his fast fingers.

He actually beat you in your own game.

Gyomei

He’s blind.

He’s a monk.

Wasn’t interested.

Giyuu

While everyone took their turns to play with your phone he just watched from the back, glanced from behind shoulders, listened to conversations.

He doesn’t feel right with asking you about anything and he doesn’t want to disturb you.

It’s only when you specifically ask him whether he would like to try he tells you the truth.

Giyuu doesn’t need much to entertain him and the same goes with playing with your phone. He’s swiping through the main pages, locking and unlocking.

Did he accidentally take a photo of himself?

Yes and now he sees it on the screen, his face from below. Giyuu doesn’t know how to delete it and he’s starting to feel overwhelmed.

You do have photos of them, you just took them some time ago but this one… this one doesn’t look good.

Giyuu never sees himself from that angle and he feels like crying inside when that photo is still pasted on the screen.

You didn’t recognise that something is wrong yet but you sure will when you ask him for the phone back. Then you’ll see it. Oh no.

Giyuu holds the phone close to his chest trying to think about something but he’s helpless. Finally, when you turn to him and he hands you back the phone…

“What?!” You start to laugh when you unlock the screen. Giyuu crumbles in his form slightly and you see he’s tensed. “Okay, come here.”

You scoop closer to him holding the phone under your face. You take a photo of both of you from below and now you’re both stuck in that weird angle on your screen.

“Don’t worry, I did that all the time.” You whisper to the man.

Okay that's all. I left out Muichiro and Obana cuz I don't really feel like writing them, never did. Sorry to all lovers of thse two.

Happy Birthday to David Duchovny.

August 7, 2023 is the 63rd birthday of my favorite writer of the 21st Century. David Duchovny has written four novels, one novella, co-written a graphic novel, three albums of original music and scripts for movies and television plus a chapbook of poetry. Why do I like his writing so much that I celebrate his birthday? He has a style that fits my world view in a way like no other writer.

It was Charles Dickens who wrote this passage, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way-“

It is David Duchovny that writes in a way that seems to claim that this is every day. He knows in the depths of despair, a person can find something funny. In the celebration of joy a bittersweet wish for someone gone surfaces. He instills frailties and flaws in all his characters and then celebrates resilience and the way we find connections. Those who might criticize inconsistencies in his tone of written books, films or television are missing the point. We all walk around daily with tonal dissonance. We yell at the people we love while being kind to strangers. We relish the beauty of a sunrise after a night beside a dying relative at the hospital. We worry over things that won’t matter a month from now and, yet, seem to pay little attention to the significance of action and thoughts of today. We are intellectuals who make foolish decisions and we are fools who intuitively do the right things. We are selfish and generous. No writer expresses this reality of life as well as Mr. Duchovny. He tells good stories which cross genres and forms. He is interested in the way stories get told and how we connect to them. He paints with words a reality of life that contains so much tragedy and fairy tale, it feels real even when it is about a cow’s journey to India or a man’s fevered dream before death due to COVID. He is interested in how we all write the narrative of our own life and that inspires me, when I frequently fail to achieve or have done something stupid, to consider what the narrative of my own life should be, to forgive myself, to seek a reason for joy.

I truly hopes he writes more in the years to come. So, with that selfish wish that he has a long life so I can enjoy his words, I wish him a Happy 63rd. .
