23. how do you deal with writers block?

just starting right out the gate with the hardest question on the list, huh 😂 the honest answer is "a lot of ways" and "it depends on where i'm at in the story".

but some of those ways are:

finding a song that fits the vibe and listening to it on repeat for hours while trying to write

going back and reading what i've already written. this one works best if i start from like... the beginning, or very early in the story. i'll pick back up all the story beats and threads i was laying down and going back over them will help me untangle whatever mess i've made and figure out where i need to go next to make it build right.

writing down scene titles / story events on physical flash cards and rearranging them in different orders in front of me (sitting on the floor and shoo'ing away my cat) to find if i'm missing pieces or what order makes the most sense

stepping away from it for a while so it can percolate in the back of my brain

forcing myself to sit in front of it and get words out

the rubber duck debugging system (talk to someone about it, ideally someone not even in the fandom, and in the process figure out what the issue is or what i need to write next, typically before they even have a chance to chime in)

read something with a somewhat related trope that either inspires me or leaves me so pissed off that i just have to go and continue my story

one piece of advice i've never seen elsewhere: be clear / have solid lines between stories you have no intention to finish vs. ones that are still breathing, even if you're not making much progress on them or doing it quickly. give your mental energy, even if it's just percolation in the back of your mind (yes, percolate like a coffee maker), to the stories you are committed to completing

65. what is your favourite title for a fic you’ve written?

ooh okay so i'm both pretentious af and lazy af about titles. i sort of get stuck on the first one that comes to mind or gels with the story and then don't overthink it.

my runner up would be Architecture of Choice. it's only an honorable mention because, outside the fic itself, it makes me think of where it came from, which is choice architecture within behavioral decision theory, and that's way more technical and related to my day job than i want to be thinking about when writing fic.

so my actual favourite fic title i've written for spn is this pretentious monstrosity: Rusted H(u)e(w)

Like... who the fuck writes a title like that? I do, apparently. because the words came to me somewhat spontaneously like they always do for a title, but then when i went to write them i had "error 404 file not found" for if my brain was supplying "rusted hew" or "rusted hue". so i had to make it both. which fits the the story - not just each of the two readings but also the choppy, inelegant way in which they're spliced together. so i'm pleased with it anyway.

Enhance AO3

Just wanted to share some scripts I use to improve my AO3 experience :)

1.  AO3 Enhancements Extension

Available on Chrome & Firefox, this extension can:

- Track works you’ve kudosed, bookmarked, and subscribed to. 

- Show an estimated reading time based on your WPM

- Hide works with too many fandoms

- Show works only in your language(s)

- Hide works from certain authors

- Decrease story width (I use this all the time. It’s great.)

- Show a Kudos/Hit ratio

- Show word count per chapter

2. User Scripts

Note: These only work on PC because you have to install the Tampermonkey extension to use these. 

AO3: Kudosed and seen history - Easily keep track of which fics you’ve kudosed, bookmarked, or seen. You can even skip/hide fics!

Character Appearance Count - Counts how many times characters (or any other specified phrase) shows up in a fic. 

AO3 Savior - Hide works by tag, author, words in title, or words in the summary. Also includes a whitelist for tags. 

AO3 Savior Config - Necessary companion to prev. 

Ao3 Only Show Primary Pairing - Set your favorite character and relationship tags. If they aren’t listed in x (number you specify) tags then the fic is hidden. Lifesaver if you only like reading certain characters/ships. 

ao3 menu items - Adds extra links to the dropdown under your profile pic. 

AO3: highlight tags - This is my favorite one. Immediately see tags you love (or hate) by coloring them. I cannot describe to you how helpful this one is. 

AO3: Page Count - I like to use this one just for funsies. It tells you how many pages a fic is. 

AO3: Tag Word Cloud -  Change font size of words of AO3 tags according to the word frequency in each chapter or entire works. 

AO3 author+tags quick-search - Adds quick links from AO3 fics to more fics by the same author in the same fandom/character/pairing/any other tag. 

ao3 series collapser - Collapses works that aren’t part 1 of a series. 

AO3: Links for Entire Works -  Add links to next and previous chapter when viewing Entire Work on AO3.

How do you choose your titles: They’re almost all from song lyrics. I’m stupidly proud of myself thought becaus 3 of the last 4 titles are NOT song lyrics, and are phrases or cute plays on things taken from the fic itself lol. I USUALLY HATE TITLING FICS and just come up with a song lyric lol

Do you outline: Nope. Almost never. I did for the Trek AU, and I also did for Rivers, but that’s it.

Coming soon/Not yet started: not started: harringrove for australia fic for @sylcbi . I keep waffling on the direction of it, other than that I’d like to do some sort of post s3 h/c where I give a bit of a whump to Billy, but Billy also regains a bit of fire after he and/or Steve get fucked with a little bit. I’m thinking likely Billy will have experienced a bit of a moment and Steve is comforting in a public place, and someone comes along and catches them and starts to fuck with them and cue Billy whuppin some ass.

Do you accept prompts: Rarely! Sometimes I’ll think up shit and/or I’ll see a HC that I *love* and I’ll go off of that. I’m a bit slow with writing so I don’t usually knock any fics out quickly. I did a few times, and I might again in the future, but usually I’m just writing what catches me. 

Upcoming story you are most excited to write: 

I LOVE WRITING POST S3 BILLS AND DEALING HIM A BIT OF HURT AND LETTING STEVE COMOFORT, this is my favorite thing ever and I’m excited to let them be soft together yet again in my HFA fic for Sylvie lol. Other than that, I don’t have any fics on my horizon!
