I do think it’s good fandom health to sometimes just make that wildly out of character au, do it, sometimes you have to look at a character and make them really fucked up, it’s enrichment, helps shake things up, make that character a serial killer, get funky with it, purposeful ooc for the sake of telling a story is a tool that should be used and practiced with, make them a cultist, have them do a fucked up game that kills two people and the have them go “well actually I didn’t shoot the gun I just have them the incentive and the gun and the money so I’m not responsible”

use purposeful ooc to exaggerate and highlight more rarely seen character details by shoving them into the forefront, purposeful ooc can be done really badly but when done well can really actually help you better understand the characters mind or prompt you to think of them in new ways

Shuichi with the other protags is funny because in my view essentially the one hyper empathy in a crowd of low empathies and I think that has possibility for some hilarity

Everyone: this is my emotional support mass murderer

Shuichi: yours are all going on character arcs about how they were forced into a life of murder against their will and finally is gaining the strength to fight against this system as well right

Makoto remembering how the literal only thing from stopping Syo is a promise she made with her crush and he’s just okay with that: wellll it’s okay because she pinkie promised but she is utterly unrepentant

Komaru also thinking about Syo: just because you can’t accept her atrocities doesn’t mean I can’t, I think it’s hot of her to try and kill a man in front of me for my honor

Hajime: I’d like to say we are all on that course but SOME OF US, KOMAEDA, ARE BEING REALLY ABSTINENT THAT MURDER IS BAD, KOMAEDA but we’re on a deserted island now so who cares honestly

No one talks about the Chapter 1 FTE's with protag Kaede and thats a real shame, some highlights from each person

Shuichi talks about climbing mountains and swimming upstream to find a missing pet alligator

Kirumi gets warned if she doesnt stop spoiling people will call her mom, truly a prophecy ignored to Kirumi's detriment

Kaito offers to get her forged paperwork like he did if she wants to be an astronaut and also wants to learn piano to communicate with aliens

Angie has a horrible nightmare after Kaede's music puts her to sleep where she cries out in terror for something to stop and about how theres not enough blood and then completely plays it off when she wakes back up

My biggest pet peeve is when people think Makoto is a pacifist like yes he believes the best in everyone, but he also had to be held back from punting Monokuma like twice and actively fights back against Kyosuke in DR3 (Episode 10 Future Side) in ways that could cause permanent damage if not death, like Makoto wants to not hurt people, he wants to find peaceful solutions, but if he doesnt think one is possible, he will get violent, he doesnt want to hurt anyone, but he will if he thinks he needs to, Makoto's kindness does not come from a sense of pacifism

Honestly I think the Despair Side of DR3 would be infinitely more cohesive and meaningful and actually have a reason to exist if we spent like 99% of it in the reserve course, make the plot not how the goodbye despair cast falls into despair, but to make the tragedy of the reserves hit 20x harder. Fully flesh out Natsumi Sato and Hajime, but also introduce new Reserves, learn the class dynamic, learn more about what the reserve course demands, and give us only glimpses of the golden main course, make us want to reach out and do anything to get there as well, make us know what happens but want Hajime to accept the Izuru Project because it gets us closer to what we want, the talented, the elites, our favorite characters.

Have the plot be utterly chained to the mundane cruelty but make that it in itself the greatest cruelty because of how inescapable it was, make the Reserve building truly something of despair from the absurd banality of it all. Show us their bitterness, exhaustion, their pain, have them enviously seethe in rumors about the main course about how they dont have homework and they dont have to take classes, about how they get gourmet lunches while they have to bring lunches from home, how they shelter criminals and then treat them like they're the true criminals.

Then make Chiaki and Hajime's friendship being the One escape from it, especially as more and more of his peers succumb, the nice boy who shares his lunch is said to have been driven into debt. The loving couple split apart because one of them didn't score high enough on a grade and got expelled. The guards put the boy that sits in front of him in a hospital because he got lost and entered into a main course area and argued back about his right to be there. The class president gets withdrawn and mean after a tongue lashing for trying to do something kind and help. The only true anchor Hajime gets that doesn't get ripped away just a bit later is Chiaki as the Reserve Course is by design completely and utterly unstable, which further cements that need to get out. Chiaki is his one anchor he gets left with as everyone else says he doesn't deserve any anchor at all.

I just think the impact of The Parade and then mass suicide would be better if instead of just faceless blue people, they all had designs, personalities, quirks, if we got to understand and care for them as people, the Most Tragic Event never happens without the Reserve Course, they should be some of the most important characters, but they're mostly forgotten despite it being their riot and their protest and their suicide that fuels EVERYTHING, they should have been what got expanded on, and I know I talk endlessly about the untalented plight in this series but goddammit it's interesting! Give me more reserve course characters! Expand on the catalyst to the entire plot! Expand on your critique on how the school system handles people!
