On the set of "Monkee Mother," filmed in January 1967; photos by Chuck Boyd.
“I can think of two good reasons why I was chosen. One is that I brought that character of the dummy to the audition. And they needed an odd man out, a guy who is like a little, you know, slightly turned from the other guys; straight-ahead rock and roll band, and one kind of simpatico, simplicico kind of a guy, and that was my character. And so that was one of the reasons why I was chosen. The other reason I think I was chosen is because I did the screen test in one take. At least, I thought it was impressive, I hope they did, too. In any case, it was like that, I got — I was the odd man out, Davy was the little British or romantic, and then two other guys, one of them light and crazed, and the other kind of dark and serious. And so that was the way it was balanced out.” - Peter Tork, NPR, June 1983 “‘They had two regular guys and a tiny heartthrob and they needed an offbeat kind of guy,’ says Peter Tork. ‘So I brought that simpleton in, a part I had developed on the Greenwich Village scene. I enjoyed that role. I still do, sometimes.’” - Washington Post, July 27, 1986 (x) “Peter had the toughest job. The Harpo Marx-type character he played on The Monkees is entirely different from his actual personality. As for Mike and Davy and me, we just became more of the same: wittier, cuter, and zanier, respectively.” - Micky Dolenz, I’m A Believer: My Life of Monkees, Music, and Madness (1993) "Very soon Peter Tork's acting talent may supersede his very fine creativity as a musician. It will be interesting to watch him develop in both areas. When I first met Peter, he seemed to be very flip about everything, but since then I have learned that he is quite concerned about life and people, that he is very sincere, profound and serious. Peter is a perennial 'student.'" - Michael Nesmith, The Monkees: Here We Are (1967)

Dizzy Gillespie was the youngest of nine children. His father was a local bandleader, so instruments were made available to his children. Dizzy started to play the piano at the age of four. His father died when he was ten years old so he taught himself how to play the trombone as well as the trumpet by the age of twelve. From the night he heard his idol, Roy Eldridge, on the radio, he dreamed of becoming a jazz musician. Dizzy is recognized as one of the greatest jazz musicians, trumpeter and composers and has collaborated with the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway to name a few.
John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie died January 6, 1993 at the age of 75.

William Foster Hayes III (June 5, 1925 – January 12, 2024) Actor and recording artist. His song "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" hit the top of the Billboard charts in the spring of 1955.
Following a successful career as a musician which began in the late 1940s, Hayes began to focus on dramatic acting parts in the late 1960s, which led him to be cast in a role that gained him additional fame to a younger generation. This new chapter began in 1970 when he originated the character of Doug Williams on NBC's Days of Our Lives, which he continued to play until 2023.
Hayes was a singer on the Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca variety show Your Show of Shows in the early 1950s. During the Davy Crockett craze in 1955, three recorded versions of the Ballad of Davy Crockett were in the top 30. Hayes' version was the most popular: It was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks, sold over two million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
On Days of Our Lives, Hayes was introduced as a convict who was also a lounge singer.
The character of Doug returned in 1986 and 1987 as well as 1993 and 1996. Later, he was on the show from 1999 onwards. His character was killed off in the spring of 2004 by Dr. Marlena Evans. In an elaborate plot hatched by head writer James E. Reilly, Doug turned up alive on a tropical island and went home to his wife. (Wikipedia)

TAEMIN’S DAY ⊕ 18th JULY 1993
Celebrating Taemin’s birthday by looking back at his solo concerts.
On the 10th of January last year I started to get into kpop. The next day I was introduced to this man, though I passed on him. March 6th and 7th my curiosity was piqued by Famous and Sayonara Hitori. March 16th I signed my soul over to the devil.
Now, in 4 days time, I’ll be in the middle of a consultation with a tattoo artist to have an image inked under my skin to reflect the permanent mark he has left on me.
Joining AFI, Marko Saaresto, James Hetfield, Chester Bennington, and his brother, Jonghyun. Musicians that have done no less that save my life or made it bearable.
Bring on 2023. SHINEE’S BACK.

"SHE CAN CREATE INTRICATE HOLOGRAPHIC ILLUSIONS, PROJECT POWERFUL LASER BEAMS OR "DAZZLE" HER OPPONENTS..."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on pin-up art of Alison Blaire, a.k.a., "Dazzler," in full battle mode against the forces of Mojo in the Mojoverse, from "The Marvel X-Men Collection" Vol. 1 #1 (of 3 issues). January, 1993. Marvel Comics. Artwork by Jim Lee.
BONUS PICS: Front and back of trading card #85, Dazzler, from "X-Men" Trading Card Series 1 by Impel/Marvel, c. 1992. Artwork by Jim Lee.
Resolution from largest to smallest: 1489x2048 (2x) 1044x1600, & 1139x764.
DAZZLER OVERVIEW: "When you think of Dazzler, odds are you think of disco and rollerskates. If you're a fan of the the classic X-Men arcade game or animated "Pryde of the X-Men" pilot, then your definitive Dazzler might rock a blue bodysuit, headband and bomber jacket. Well, there's another Dazzler: Freedom Fighter Dazzler! Jim Lee's Dazzler redesign could have taken the mutant musician totally grunge, but instead she went full "Universal Soldier."
Dazzler's one of a few "Ex-X-Men" included in the set, a group devoted to characters -- like Magik and Sunspot -- who had recently left their X-teams. This card actually coincided with the debut of this rough-and-ready version of Dazzler. As her bio states, Dazzler's whereabouts were unknown prior to her return in summer 1992's "X-Men" #10. This is the version of Dazzler -- a freedom fighter commanding troops alongside Longshot in the Mojoverse -- that debuted in that story-arc. Fans wouldn't get all that much of Dazzler in the '90s, though, and once she returned in the '00s, this period of her history was mostly forgotten."

Jeff signs with Columbia/Sony Records, October 29, 1992
.
.
.
The signing was scheduled for October 29. Record contracts can often be initiated by musicians in their own home and then sent back to the labels, but everyone at Sony, Ienner in particular, wanted to make a statement that they had landed a major artist. Wearing a black jacket, Jeff went to the legal office at 5 pm, leaned over the desk, and scrawled his signature on the last page. Then Ienner, Berkowitz, David Kahne (senior vice president of A&R, and Berkowitz's boss), and Sony buisness executives gathered in front of the Columbia logo in the reception area, and the official commemorative photo was snapped.
When the photograph of the signing finally appeared in print, in the January 30, 1993, issue of Billboard, it would have been easy to mistake it for a post-wedding-ceremony gathering of the bridegroom's closest buddies. The seven men in the photo, especially Ienner, sported broad, satisfied smiles. Standing next to Ienner, Jeff looked stiff and pale, more like someone who was signing up for a flu shot instead of a million-dollar record contract. He was the only one not flashing even the tiniest of grins.-from Dream Brother

NAME: Elliott Jönsson FACE CLAIM: Bill Skarsgard AGE & DATE OF BIRTH: 30 & January 11th, 1993 HOMETOWN: Stockholm, Sweden TIME IN LOS ANGELES: 20 years NEIGHBORHOOD: Beverly Hills OCCUPATION: Music producer, CEO of Maroon Sound Studios
biography.
trigger warning: addiction, alcoholism, substance abuse, abortion
“Fledgling artistry, hidden behind a household name and a tower on the strip.” Such were the anecdotes of artists, business partners, and musicians alike. Of course, this was the late 90’s in L.A. A period infamous for the abandonment of rock and R&B, and the rise of Hip-Hop and streaming. The classic pop-rock powerhouse that was Jönsson Records was not cut out for the change. Did it have to do with the rise of illegal streaming, and the outmoded music production? Perhaps. But if asked, Elliott could date the moment of demise, and it wasn’t the day the Internet went mainstream. The trouble starts well before his time, with his father - Oskar Jönsson. A figment of wealth and sensitivity, the heir to Jönsson Records cared little for the minutia and rigour of business. Late nights turned into later mornings, and working hours spanned from 10-2. Indeed, it seemed Oskar was determined to live down his illustrious reputation. Whether it was old fashioned privilege, or a knee-jerk reaction to the mantle of power. The end result? A stagnant business, a family in disarray, and an ever-empty bottle of liquor.
If Elliott’s father was gasoline, his mother was a lit match. You’ve read about their love affair. It’s written into the heart and soul of Katerina Jönsson’s gold records. The famous singer of the 80’s was a whirlwind. A musical savant, heavy with her own struggles and hardships. But love in the time of hardship was a tricky thing, indeed. The young couple was barely three months sober when Oskar got down on one knee, and presented a four-carat Emerald ring set in a gold band.
A year later, they welcomed their first son - Elliott Fredrik Jönsson. Aptly born on Katerina’s tour bus heading for Seattle. He was eight pounds of pale skin, crystalline eyes, and Jönsson blood. Those who’d come to bend the metaphorical knee to the latest in Jönsson men shared a side-eye of contempt. Was he to be a mirror of his father, in achievement and struggle?
The answer comes barely eight years later. At the groundbreaking of the Jönsson family’s latest record deal, with a well-dressed Elliott quick on his feet. After an hour hunched over in his father’s private bathroom, placing a small hand on his back, and coaxing out the liquor. The verdict was in - he’d need to play the role of pappa. The young boy washed his hands, coaxed back his messy hair, and delivered an “utterly adorable and endearing” (to quote the LA times) speech on behalf of his “stomach-flu” ridden father. It was the first time, but it certainly wasn’t the last. His gilded childhood was that of responsibility and apprehension. Behind the mecca of wealth and privilege, Elliott spent his after-school days coaxing his mother out of bed and his evenings begging his father to leave the bar.
To this day, he can’t recall a single Thanksgiving that wasn’t spent in a constant state of repair.
Determined to be nothing like his father, he tucks away the antics and hardships by the time he gains admission into Stanford University. As far as his peers were concerned, his mother was just “passionate” and his father “fun-loving.” And if his parents appeared a mess, the same could not be said for Elliott. He came to school without a hair out of place, or a mismatched button on his shirt. Yet for all the ways he proclaimed to be nothing like them, his ear for music and talent for producing was unquestionably a birth right. A major in Business with a minor in musical theory, Elliott came to school with a vision and exited with a plan.
It’s somewhere between lecture halls and social events that he finds Brie Barlow. He’s always known her, of course. A figment of his childhood, and of LA’s social scene. She’s as familiar to him as the sound of a melody echoing from his family home. But it’s the first time they see each other, and the result is not unlike the legacy of his father and mother. Their romance is a whirlwind, swept up in adrenaline and uncontrolled euphoria. The type-A pair submit to the danger of love itself, and it amalgamates into a first love for the ages. If Brie Barlow was a song, she’d be his very first hit. At the time, he was certain she’d be his last. Before graduation, he drops down to one knee. Theirs was a song he’d sing forever.
Upon their return to Los Angeles, Elliott put himself to work. An ingenue at only 24, he by-passes his father’s sloppy management and claims the title of CEO for himself. Oskar happily steps aside. Who wanted to run a dwindling ship? But Elliott comes armed with a plan, and a rebrand. The relic that was Jönsson Records was renamed Maroon Sound Studios. A modern recording and talent management company, with great heritage. He invests in new artists, with a new sound. He invests in sound engineers and app developers from Silicon Valley, heavily buying into the digitization of sound. It works. By the time he’s kissing Brie on their wedding day, Elliott is everything he set out to be. A success, a husband, and a titan of the music industry.
There’s perfection, and there’s happiness - and for all he knew at a young age, Elliott never knew how to reconcile the two. Love, he believed, was meant to be a passionate battlefield. Wasn’t that his own parents’ marriage? And didn’t they produce something beautiful, in music and in life? Yet that perfection comes at a cost. The high-stress work that comes with running the studio, mixed with an accident accumulated in two pink lines. Elliott’s “recreational indulgence” in white powder and pills grows. It’s “part of the brand” his colleagues claim, yet Elliott finds his crutch evolving. It’s further emphasised by the reckoning of almost-parenthood, and the heartbreak of telling Brie it isn’t what he wanted.
At the time, neither could say that their marriage isn’t what they wanted.
But a crack in perfection is enough to evolve into a chasm. His exploits get bolder, his nights get later. It’s not until he wakes up one day after another bender, shallow eyed and itching for more, that he sees what he’s become. He’s become his father. He’s become vice personified.
The decision to leave doesn’t come easily. But when it does, it happens quickly. There are no suits to pack or Rolex watches to take with him. Not where he was going. No note, no word. Cowardice consumes Elliott, and he’s on a private plane to Stockholm before Brie could get back from work. A rehabilitation center nestled in the Swedish West coast. It’s unlike the hubs of New York or LA, a glorified celebrity hotspot. He spends his quiet days thinking, fishing by the coast, and looking for the one thing he’s yet to find - lasting peace. For a year, he keeps to this quiet routine. Very much outside the glitz and glamour of his life.
But his life inevitably calls back, in the form of a new record in desperate need of Elliott’s touch. There’s a life that waits for him, however ill-fitted.
And so, the prodigal son returns to the City of Angels clean as a whistle and determined to change.

Interview with Julian Koster about Chocolate USA in Flagpole, July 14, 1993 [source]
transcript:
CHEWING THE CHOCOLATE CUD
Chocolate USA is more than a band; it's a concept, and, according to Julian Koster, vocalist/writer/musician, it's an attempt to bridge the gap between fan and band. “Chocolate is more a ‘thing’ than a band. It's an idea,” he said while spooning out the sour cream from his chicken burrito while we sat at Compadres. “When I was a kid the bands I listened to opened me up; they were like my best friends.” He went on to describe the intensity of emotion and intimacy one feels when connecting with the music. So many bands build walls around them and what Chocolate would like to do is “make something without a backdrop. The idea is... the world has to be limitless.”
We originally drove off towards town in Chocolate’s newly acquired red van with white paint sloshed in swirls along the sides. The van is the band’s current prized possession once belonging to Bar/None, Chocolate’s record label. Performers such as They Might Be Giants, Freedy Johnston, and others have graced its exteriors and left their marks in the guise of bumper stickers and stage passes plastered on the metal sides and dashboard. A Soul Asylum all access pass looms from under the radio while bumper stickers proudly proclaiming “My other car is a penis" and “Bush Wishing Well — please give a shit about greedy Republicans” cover the sides of the well-worn vehicle. There's a Freedy Johnston backstage pass, and a few others with handwritten band names, now smudged through time.
There's also the cow... and our reason for driving downtown in the first place — to find paint that will cover the Wooden Cow Guest House insignia in the middle of Julian's four foot high wooden cow. “I'm into a cow phase at the moment,” he said while we walked towards the art shop carrying the cow. “It’s the imagery of cows on the side of the road — no matter where you tour, there are cows on the side of the road. I used to pass this cow pasture all the time when I was in high school so it brings back certain memories to me,” he said. I asked him if he had written any ‘cow’ songs. He began singing one, to no surprise.
Their debut album, All Jets Are Gonna Fall Today, was released by Bar/None records just a couple of months ago, yet the material for the album was written and recorded several years ago while Julian was at the high point of his adolescent angst. “Bar/None took it as is. Most people block adolescence out of their heads, I released mine nationally!” It turned out that Bar/None was Julian's favorite record label at the time. “I was a huge fan of They Might Be Giants, Yo La Tengo, Ordinaires — they were my three favorite bands. [Bar/None] responded right away to the LP. They are the neatest, funniest people I've ever met working with indie rock. [With All Jets] we preserved the time and what was there. We're definitely a Bar/None band — we fit in that mindset.”
The band currently has 25 songs to weed through for their second release planned for January, some of which are partially recorded. In the meantime the band is planning to release a vinyl only EP in the fall. But for the past two years Chocolate has been running their Chocolaty Good Smash Hit of the Month Club. What you get when you join is a personalized mini album with covers made by the band “Nothing in the club will ever be anywhere else.” Julian is also working on radio play ideas, characters involved with the band — both real and imagined — and has worked with real life characters such as Eugene Chadbourne and Daniel Johnson on projects. The current Chocolate lineup is Keith Block on drums, Allen Edwards on guitar, Paul Wells on bass and mandolin, Liza Wakeman on violin, and Julian on guitars, mandolin, concertina, and turntables. “I'm inspired by George Clinton and the Parliament and Funkadelics. They were very much a family. Our ultimate goal is to bring the band’s garage and the kid's bedroom closer together.” Julian asked for the time while smashing a bite of burrito into his mouth. Evidently he had two other phone interviews to take care of and he was already late for one of them. We rushed out of the restaurant, not forgetting the cow, and descended back into the heat and the red van “Did I tell you what I'm going to do with the cow?” he asked. I wasn't sure I wanted to know the answer. “We're going to put it on stage with us — do something with it — I'm not sure what....” We got back into the van and drove off, securing the cow in the back seat.
I had to ask: How did this cow fetish come about? “During the time we were recording All the Jets, the cow stuff was coming into effect,” he said. “I fell in love for the first time at age 16.” Evidently seeing cows brings back the memory of the cow pasture Julian used to walk by during his high school days, when the love bug first struck... “It was a case of unrequited love. It blew my mind — about love and what we were going through at the time. It was during adolescence and about adolescence. There was no perspective. I was in the middle of the ocean and I was swimming without a life jacket. That was adolescence — that was love.” Hillary Meister
Chocolate U.S.A. are playing at the 40 Watt for their Athens album release party on Wednesday, July 14. They play rarely in these parts and are about to embark on a national tour. Catch them now before they travel down the winding pastured road...

“Dolenz is on good terms with Mike Nesmith (the wool-capped Monkee) and Peter Tork (the slow Monkee). He and Davy Jones aren’t speaking, but Dolenz (the bad-haired Monkee) heard through the grapevine that Jones (the short Monkee) didn’t like his book. That’s not really much of a surprise. Dolenz describes Davy Jones as a nice guy overall, but the Monkees-era Jones comes off as a preening ball of ego, more interested in doing his nails than anything else. He doesn’t get much better as time goes on. Young Tork comes off as a gentle but temperamental Bohemian. And young Nesmith, we learn in the book, has a temper of his own and an affinity for Car and Driver magazine. Back in the Monkees days, when Dolenz and Jones — the two actors — were still pals, Tork and Nesmith — the two musicians — had ‘endless artistic duels about the “sound,” and the “groove,” and the “feel.” Davy and I would look at each other, shrug and go have a beer.’” - The News Tribune, October 5, 1993
Rik Turner: “You were treated very kindly in Micky Dolenz’s book. He talked about you in the fondest sense.” Peter Tork: “Didn’t he call me a saint?” RT: “At one point, he did call you a saint in the book.” PT: (nods) Have we got the halo effect back in the control room now? (Laughter) Make-up!” RT: “The only thing that he said about you was that sometimes you, in meetings, you would stare out of the window and curse society. (Laugher) Something like that.” PT: (mimes gazing out the window and shaking a fist) RT: “Something like that. Yeah, I envision that.” PT: “No, I would sometimes rail against injustice.” - The Rik Turner Show, January 5, 1994

A major proponent of collective improvisation, he is considered to be one of the greatest jazz musicians and composers in history, with a career spanning three decades and collaborations with other jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Herbie Hancock. His work ranged from advanced bebop and avant-garde jazz with small and midsize ensembles – pioneering the post-bop style on seminal recordings like Pithecanthropus Erectus (1956) and Mingus Ah Um (1959) – to progressive big band experiments such as The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (1963).
He was born in Nogales, Arizona. His father, Charles Mingus Sr., was a sergeant in the Army. He was raised in the Watts area of Los Angeles.
His compositions continue to be played by contemporary musicians ranging from the repertory bands Mingus Big Band, Mingus Dynasty, and Mingus Orchestra, to the high school students who play the charts and compete in the Charles Mingus High School Competition. In 1993, the Library of Congress acquired his collected papers—including scores, sound recordings, correspondence, and photos—in what they described as “the most important acquisition of a manuscript collection relating to jazz in the Library’s history”. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
