I really don't enjoy Penacony, but I think its structure is kind of shooting it in the foot too.

HYV is having a lot of fun with perspective changes, but I don't think it works very well in a story that wants you to get invested in 'everyone playing their own angle'. Rather than playing as a Trailblazer that's investigating these characters and getting to know them/develop a rapport with them as a player, the game will POV switch to the characters just outright explaining, or partially explaining, their goals to you or to each other.

I couldn't get invested in the Trailblazer's relationship with Aventurine despite 2.1's patch finale really wanting you to think they're cool, and absolutely no effort was made to build up Aventurine and Acheron's final conflict. You suspect Aventurine as a suspect for murder/a liar, he says he's not, and before you can investigate that you switch POV to Aventurine and learn exactly what he's up to because he walks you through it step by step. What did the Trailblazer do last patch? Talk to Gallagher? Why were they not bonding with Aventurine so that his death really hits hard?

Acheron is accused of murder, and before you get to investigate that yourself and try to figure out her motives we get a POV switch to Sam and Acheron promising they're not murderers and context for why Acheron Did A Murder.

Switching back to Sunday and Gallagher and having them just... rendezvous with the crew (via Firefly) instead of having us investigate Gallagher ourselves is also really boring.

I wouldn't accept this in a book or an anime, but I definitely don't accept it in an interactive medium.

It's especially disappointing when Penacony provides you so many options to investigate these characters that are usually unavailable to detectives - you can enter people's dreamscapes and muddle with their emotions, but that's never a factor. Why is a ghost Aventurine telling present!Aventurine (and therefore the player) about Aventurine's inferiority complex and how terrified he is? Couldn't I figure that out by trying to use my Emotion Dial thing to trigger an emotional response in him to get information and see first-hand how good his poker face really is?

It's not helped by HSR using expository dialogue as a crutch for the fact that they don't want to build too many maps, make cutscenes that are too fancy or put in fights they don't have to. It just turns the whole 'mystery' into an explain-a-thon with very little gameplay that actually ties into the mystery we're 'solving'. (we're about to get another one with gallagher and sunday. the 4th since this patch started and it's been like 20 minutes.)

Why did Acheron have to exposit about 'the dark side of Penacony' instead of us visiting it and seeing the differences first hand? Bc this map had to be saved for its own patch? Why did we not get to see the effects of what Sunday tried to do to Aventurine til this patch? Bc they thought expository dialogue would spook me?

Maybe if HSR didn't blatantly theme this around famous crime fiction novels and movies it wouldn't annoy me so much, but when 'solving the mystery' involves almost no actual investigation and the answers are just 'POV switch to the appropriate NPC and they'll explain it".... they've got some fucking nerve, right?

Anyway, I would've had Robin and the Trailblazer team up from the start of Penacony instead of Firefly (for their respective investigations), and had her die in front of them. Aventurine, Acheron and Sam are all present as witnesses so you investigate them for more information using various gameplay modes.

Then the player can see Sparkle-as-Robin and give a shit about that mystery either as a ??? what happened and/or !!! outrage, our friend, and we might give a shit about the fact we think Robin actually died.

also, did we seriously wait 12 weeks to learn the memory meme is a taxi? last patch was such filler bs. did aventurine actually accidentally kill himself.

I think in Unova they're like. Super confused because literally No One can imagine Subway Boss Ingo doing something like murder. He comes back surrounded by poison type Sneasels and are like Oh Okay, The Poison Got To His Head. 

Sinnoh however knows EXACTLY who he is in seconds. He’s that Feral Warden who PROBABLY lied to the Pearl Clan about Arceus telling him to commit murder so he could get away with exacting justice against his adopted daughter’s parents for SELLING HER TO MARRIAGE, knowing FULL WELL SHE WILL DIE. He’s in history books. He’s a meme. So many historians have studied him and his mysterious appearance and his just as mysterious disappearance. His adopted daughter is literally famous in history books and is typically called the “Hero of Hisui” and they have made MOVIES about her story. (Painfully inaccurate ones, at that.)

Sinnoh goes fucking NUTS over this guy and nobody blames him for his two accounts of murder At All. It’s not like the justice system back then would have done anything, after all! 

Also Ingo shows off the dagger which is Very Clearly Blessed and they’re like oh he Wasn't Lying. Yeah we can’t blame the guy for doing what Arceus told him to.

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?

Either more visual novels, or a prose novel! I think that it’s nice to have a little time to puzzle out Pagemanteaus, and spoken media might go by a little too quickly for that. Also, unless you are literally Stupendium, putting Pages into a musical would be doomed to failure. The difficulty bar is absurdly high.

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

I’m not a fan of questions like this! I think that unless it’s a genuine ethical issue like harassment, complaining about fandom creations is stirring up trouble and complaining about stuff that people make in their free time, for no pay, and often with no training. Also? The FL community tends to be pretty erudite and fun-loving. Everyone who memes on Pages gets the appeal! I always like seeing it, even if I’m too shy to interact sometimes.

So I guess instead, I’ll try to give advice? If you’re drawing Pages, I think that it’s fun to go exaggerated with the body language. Since you can’t see its face, most of the emotion will be stored in the pose. The other masters are better at acting spooky and stoic than Pages is. Pages is a fucking gremlin. ❤️

9. Could you be roommates with this character?

ABSOLUTELY NOT. My favorite characters are generally somewhat amoral and obnoxious, and Pages fits the bill for this. Let’s be real: Pages is a messy bitch who loves drama and canceling people for their problematic writing. Pages would take one look at a trans dude who writes weird smut with flawed characters and whoops I’m quickly dogpiled and in prison.

Pages is my worst nightmare but it is very fun to imagine a character (The Academic) who could survive it. Power fantasies come in all shapes and sizes.

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

I love writing pagemeanteaus. IRL I struggle to verbalize my thoughts often, and though I have a large vocabulary, I tend to get stuck when I can’t remember words. Sometimes simple ones. It’s very frustrating to stand there trying to talk with a brain that just stopped working. So I love that while writing, I can just bullshit words instead. Whenever I stumble I can just cramsert whatever makes sense into Pages’ speechandering style of speaking.

On the other hand, I have difficulty balancing how romantic to make Pages, with how antagonistic. I know that my characterization is much less brooding and mysterious than in canon (especially MotR. That one needs for Pages to represent the masters as a group for most of its plot, so it comes across as much more muted). I tend to lean on Pages’ depiction in Hearts Desire, which is lullingly affable, until the instant it’s not getting what it wants, whereupon it can be venomous. But I get the feeling that Pages really does like human romance, and its desires would be a little more mainstream than the curator fight-flirting I tend to write. If I were trying to write as canonically as possible, I’d tone that stuff down.

But sadly, I love antagonistic nemesis comedic pseudo-romances with blustery infodumping old guys, so you’re stuck with me writing Pages with a very low spooky and traditionally romantic stats. It’s autism and slapstick murder hours 24/7 in my house. ❤️

As I said before, I’ll be posting drawings of OCs, mainly from the webcomic series I’m working on titled ‘Shadow Realm’. I do have other original series and ideas as well, so here’s a little info…

Shadow Realm

Shadow Realm is a 4-part action horror urban fantasy series starring Sophia Alvarado, a Cuban teenage girl who lives in Miami who one day ends up in a different and strange world from our own, and ends up encountering ghosts and gaining powers of electricity. With her occult and coffee-obsessed friend Violet Bellerose and a friendly ghost she meets on the other side dubbed Shady, they encounter different ghosts and supernatural occurrences all across Miami. There’s a lot more to it, but that’s the basic gist of it for now. (It gets very complicated from part 2 onward…)

Kendall Convenience

A small game project that has the player take the role of one Katrina Diaz, a convenience store worker in Miami who works the graveyard shift. This takes place in the same universe as Shadow Realm.

Mystères de Lenoir

Mysteres de Lenoir is a series that follows the protagonist, Stella Auclair, a fresh detective who takes place in steampunk and gothic France during the Belle Époque era. Stella works with André Dupin, at the Dupin Detective Agency, and they solve a series of mysteries, most of which are murder cases.

I have two other series, but those are a secret for now… I will say though that one of them is a western, and the other is a single volume (One-Shot) comic.

you are crazy sweet for always responding to these, especially because I queue them and forget. in fact, I have an unanswered one of yours still sitting in my inbox because it came in while i was logged out for a while.

7. Any worldbuilding you’re particularly proud of?

no specific scene comes to mind, but showing the intent behind a place is fun, like portraying a society as ambitious or crumbling or overbearing purely by describing its architecture. decay is one of my favorite things to describe because it can show neglect, the passing of time, the effects of weather, and/or that something has been well-used and loved.

another worldbuilding motif of mine is food. i love making up fantasy foods, or describing a real place by the type and quality of the food. people are also a very important part of worldbuilding to me because i'm a people-watcher irl, so i try to include the interesting types of people i see in daily life in my stories.

23. What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to?

murder mystery thriller. i have a half-dozen plot ideas for this genre but i lose interest in them too quickly. one is about a wildfire, one involves police corruption, one starts with a party on a beach, and one is even set in space...but i cannot make myself complete the outlines let alone start writing. i think the idea of sustaining suspense for a whole story intimidates/bores my brain. maybe someday

36. Do you visualize what you read/write?

oh, always. the only time my mind draws a blank is usually during dialogue. otherwise, it's like watching a movie in my head or experiencing VR. and while writing, if I can't visualize it I physically act it out or sketch/research an environment so I can better adjust my brain to the setting.

40. Do you tend to reread fics or are you a one-and-done kind of person?

I don't know if I should laugh or sigh because hell yeah I re-read. Too much. Too often. If I re-read I edit or I get excited for the ending I never wrote, and either way I end up wasting hours I meant to spend on something else (thanks, ADHD). I've started a new thing where I write quick, small pieces that make me happy and I re-read them until the dopamine is gone. Once that happens, they either move to The Big File where I intend to connect them all into a linear story, or I delete them because they're superfluous/redundant.

1) What does your F/O love about themselves?

Laurel will always take pride in her intelligence! Even through the hits to her self-esteem and ability to trust herself that come with the arc she undergoes, she'll never lose that feeling of satisfaction whenever she learns something new.

Before she changes for the better, this shows when she subtly teases her would-be victims after outsmarting them. Now, she feels those swells of pride after she feels like her knowledge has been helpful to others: helping an ailing plant perk back up, giving the perfect book recommendation, keeping up with conversations about my obscure interests so I can feel heard and understood… My beloved is so smart and wonderful to talk to! Our gardens and bookshelves couldn't be in better hands.

She's also proud of her resilience, as she should be! She survived trauma that no child should ever have to go through, then she took the time and effort to correct everything her family had taught her! And build a new happy life and loving relationship that went completely against that! I make sure to remind her all the time of how proud I am of her and how much our hard-earned love means to me.

6) Can your F/O sing?

Her actress has sung in a movie before, so listen for yourself!

I've talked before about how she doesn't care for her own singing voice, since she hasn't had much chance to practice. But when I catch her singing softly while caring for her plants for the first time? Dreamiest I'd ever seen her up to that point, and that's saying a lot. Her singing voice just sounds so sweet and innocent, unburdened by everything she's gone through. It completely melts my heart and makes me want to wrap her up in my arms…

She'll sometimes sing me to sleep after the first time I catch her with the plants, but only because she loves my reaction as I bring her into my embrace and relax against her.

8) What would be your F/O’s favorite TV/movie genre?

I'd say that aligns with her literary tastes in the sense that she tends to like things with a dark, sometimes gothic edge to them? Which is ironic, given that in-universe at least one of the most influential Gothic authors was an outcast. But she was never above reading books associated with outcasts, whether to use the spells they came up with or as a way of processing her overwhelming feelings of solitude and discontent.

(In hindsight, she jokes that she should've known something was wrong when the words of the people her family feared the most spoke so much more to her than any of the books her mother told her a proper lady should be reading.)

So the big genres she'd gravitate towards in movies and TV are drama, mystery, dark fantasy, thrillers, and occasionally dark comedy. That kind of thing.

If she had to pick just one that's her favorite, she'd go with mystery. Piecing together a murder plot or even grander scheme on her own and then being rewarded when the story either validates her observations or manages to trick her? She loves it, and she loves having me around while she watches so she can talk about it! Her favorite comfort watches would probably be old mystery shows, like Columbo or Murder, She Wrote. (Which I eagerly join her in watching so I can understand the memes about them.)

My preferred name is Jay, I'm 18 and I don't really mind what pronouns people use but I do prefer to mainly go by she/they pronouns. I'm omnisexual with a preference for women.

I absolutely love horror movies and listening to music, reading, playing video games, writing story ideas (that will never be continued), dark humour jokes, murder mystery films and true crime related media. On the other hand though I hate most birds, people who lie to me, when Christmas music gets played months before Christmas actually happens, being ignored and when people try to invade my personal - try to hug me etc - without asking to make sure it's okay with me.

My personality type if I remember is Intj, I see myself as an ambivert as I'm normally quite quiet around people I don't really know that well but I do become much more extrovert around people who I'm close friends with. I would say I say I have anger issues as well but it comes across as passive aggressive (idk if that makes sense). I love listening to gossip and talking about gossip. If I hear anyone mention a fandom that I hyperfixate on, I will rant about it! I also have broken humour and will laugh at the slightest thing despite it not actually being funny.

16. What's an AU you would love to read (or have read and loved)?

ohh i read and love so many aus it is so difficult to choose just one. some of my favourites include spies, ghost hunting, anything with magic, pacific rim (despite never having seen the movie lol), stories in which there Are alternate universes and characters get trapped in them. i could keep going but i'll stop there haha

17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?

I love writing things that draw from real life, partially because it adds ✨realism✨ and partially because it's fun to romanticise things that are happening in my life by turning them into fic in my head. (see: newsies band camp fic, newsies soulmates fic)

SO in that vein I would probably have an absolutely joyous time reading/writing a summer festival au, with tips to a bunch of the shenanigans I've gotten up to / been privy to over the past couple years. this may or may not include the romcom I dreamed up last year because our office (serious meetings) shared a wall with the city basketball team management (ping pong and beyonce). perhaps some bad roller coasters. camaraderie. breathless wonder. doesn't that sound alluring??? I can't get too excited otherwise I'll start writing it for real

surpriiiise I am currently working on my supernatural detective agency au! it is called detective sagency in my files because I tried to make a joke about how they could use the same acronym. the cornley polytechnic detective 'sagency. it feels in character, like they would put it on their door like that. you know.

Trevor seems pleased to hear this. "That's what we do here," he says, and before Vanessa can interject with a slightly bewildered tell people which animal their initials look like? he adds, "Discover new things. You know." He waves a hand sort of willy-nilly. "Detectives."

+ 43. If you take/write prompts: what's your favourite prompt fic that you've written?

I love how you are obligated to anyway despite knowing the answer. In lieu of prompt fics etc, I will mention one of my favourite things that could have been a prompt but isn't - it was suggested in a private chats and expanded upon to a point where it basically became a little chatfic. It's an au of Lookout 3 (really inception-ing the AUs haha) in which Paul is not dead, the Penguin lands in Bethsbridge to wait out a storm and the crew embroil themselves in a cultish murder mystery, and Paul and John get to do the spiderman pointing meme at each other. I will probably never write it, so if you ever want a full elaboration / the entire sparknotes plot, I will be happy to oblige :)

15. Did you read any books that were nominated for or won awards this year (Booker, Women’s Prize, National Book Award, Pulitzer, Hugo, etc.)? What did you think of them?

Several, apparently! Though most of these I didn't realize were prize-winners when I read them.

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver (won the Pulitzer for Fiction): FANTASTIC, amazing, loved it. A retelling of David Copperfield in modern Appalachia.

Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (Hugo nominee): also excellent! I probably should have reread the first two books in the series before reading this one, but it was still wonderful.

Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay (won the Bram Stoker Award): also LOVED it. Do not judge it by the movie.

Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution by R. F. Kuang (won the Nebula): to break my streak, I hated this one. I felt like it was a 101-level take on imperialism without interesting enough characters to redeem the historical shallowness.

20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?

Ha, I haven't actually gotten around to reading any of my top 2023 releases yet! That said, I cannot wait for Translation State by Ann Leckie (the next book in the Imperial Radch series), Witch King by Martha Wells (fantasy by the author of Muderbot), Lone Women by Victor LaValle (horror in the Wild West by an AMAZING horror author, one of my favorites), and The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty (middle-aged lady pirates by the author of the Daevabad trilogy).

24. Did you DNF anything? Why?

I have a compulsion to finish anything I start, so I never really admit to DNFing a book; even if I put it down and haven't read anything of it for months, I keep *meaning* to get back to it and finish it eventually, so I don't count it as DNF'ed.

That said, it took me a year to finish The Pirates Lafitte: The Treacherous World of the Corsairs of the Gulf by William C Davis, because it was so boring and also weirdly racist. I also have been taking ages to get back to Better the Blood by Michael Bennett, which is a murder mystery set in New Zealand, but it's so cliche and hackneyed.
