Song Review(s): Phil Lesh Quintet - “Night of a Thousand Stars,” “New Speedway Boogie,” “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and “Shakedown Street” (Live, March 6, 2024)
A bunch of “Wheel” teases - that’s who the Phil Lesh Quintet are.
Taking the stage March 6 in New York, the band sung an a cappella section of the Grateful Dead number before rolling into “Night of a Thousand Stars” an original from its 2002 album, There and Back Again. A bit rushed, it was nevertheless a fine performance and a real treat to hear this long-neglected gem from Lesh’s small stable of self-penned material.
The same preference for sprightly tempos marked the version of “New Speedway Boogie” that followed on the band’s generous livestream sampler from the gig. Keyboardist Rob Barraco sung this one and the mid-song jam found the musicians slowly tearing the music apart, eventually devolving to the threads of formless, but not uninteresting, improvisation, before they pieced it back together for the final verse and a cappella conclusion.
A prime example of how post-Grateful, Dead music should be explored.

Warren Haynes was back on the mic for “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” another quickly paced number that found the singer engaging with fellow axeman Jimmy Herring in a thrilling inter-verse duel that continued until bassist Lesh and drummer John Molo nudged the Traffic song toward Jamaica and a reggae jam that eventually led to more vocals and the outro.
Haynes kept on singing when an atypically slow “Shakedown Street” emerged from the post-“Fantasy” silence. The song’s essential backgrounds were rough and the livestream faded before the track ended. Seemingly no great loss, given this “Shakedown” didn’t seem destined to seriously poke around, though Sound Bites’ll never know for sure.
No matter. In the nearly 55 minutes of music that the band gave away, it reinforced why its now-periodic reunions are so highly anticipated and why - when it was a going concern during the aughts - the PLQ was such a beloved institution.
Grade card: Phil Lesh Quintet - “Night of a Thousand Stars,” “New Speedway Boogie,” “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and “Shakedown Street” (Live - 3/6/24) - B/B+/A-/I

That one Y0 substory where Kiryu pretends to be a producer gone wrong XD
When I get that choice it always cracks me up just the mental image of Kiryu just SLAMMING his fucking fist into the dishes, shocking the shit out of the camera crew lmao
For context: one of the camera crew asks Kiryu to "jeer the dishes" and "strike the set"

Day 2 of Ishin
Wait there was a plot I was just fishing and running errands and praying to statues for two hours
It’s all still super political blah blah politics
Btw It’s Shinsengumi Time
Okay the difficulty curve is starting to show, but it seems to be only in the optional content. If I can beat Okita with a gun I get brownie points
Also this is another nitpick. I can now start to see which models got little touch ups and which ones got the full HD 4K rework, as well as who went back in the booth to do voice work because of once again how subpar the audio balancing is.
Hidenari Ugaki was not one of those people because his “Shinpan-chan” line sounds exactly the same and comparing it to Ryoma’s sensual ASMR audio it’s like night and day.
But don’t worry Okita is still thirsty for Ryoma dick and they did keep the ‘calling Okita handsome’ line in.
But KUZZZZEEEEEEEE
Also Awano’s model is really good if they did a Yakuza 0 remastered port (literally change nothing about the game, just up the resolution on everything) I would be all over that shit in a heartbeat
In regards to Zhao replacing Baba, Zhao’s VA does a terrific job, but the glasses are honestly a distraction.
….why did I think Ichiban was in the Ishin remake
Ryoma trying to justify why murder is bad when I have slaughtered hundreds with a firearm (Ryoma: his justification is that they’re rubber bullets)
Harukkkkkaaaaaaaaa
As it seems from my perspective, the UI for gardening and cooking has literally not changed at all from the PS4 original.
Miss Tatsu is also here. With guns.
How long until I find Bacchus in some random back alley and I just hear ‘HEY. BOY.”

i don't like 0 majima and his greasy ass disgusting ponytail, i think his brooding emosona is a disservice to the fun, chaotic, likeable and charismatic guy he becomes once he gets his snakeskin jacket. like there's 983943043092 Deeply Depressed Traumatized Sad Guys out there but a precious few trash goblins who exist to create chaos. otherwise tho i do love his breakdancing and pummeling bat fighting styles over any of kiryu's Not going to lie

wahey i finally 100%ed yakuza 0
i’m definitely never doing that for any of the other yakuza games lol. i usually have no interest in 100% completing games but i made an exception here cause zero, as my introduction to the yakuza series, has a special place in my heart haha. i didn’t realise how much i missed it until i started playing it again after i finished like a dragon (which is an amazing game as well), everything from the combat to the soundtrack to the substories to the villains it’s all just so so good
also, this time i played through the game on legend difficulty without using healing items, and i think playing that way helped me appreciate certain sequences and fights more than i did before. i’m thinking specifically of the first time you fight kuze, and the fuckton of dojima goons you have to fight through to get to him. that level’s never really given me much trouble before, but this time it was BRUTAL. not being able to heal up all the little scrapes and hits you take when fighting the big crowds of enemies is bad enough, but when i finally got to kuze for the first time i quickly came to the realisation that i basically bruteforced all the boss fights the first time i played zero lol. my strategy was legit just run up & flail in their face, mash quickstep if i get hit, use an item if health gets low, repeat until dead. obv with no items this strat is no longer viable, so having to actually fight the bosses was a bit of a trip, but DAMN does it make certain boss battles wildly enjoyable, ESPECIALLY the kuze fights
one thing i wanna mention. naturally as part of getting 100% i had to play all the minigames, even the ones i hadn’t touched at all. and while some of them were as not-my-thing as i expected them to be (batting centre, koi-koi, baccarat/oicho-kabu), there were a couple that were actually pretty fun. the dice games in the homeless camp are the first ones to come to mind. one of them, cho-han, is MEGA simple, literally just 50/50 guessing so there isn’t much to it, but the rounds go by really quick so it’s easy to wanna keep playing. but the other dice game, cee-lo, is legitimately really fun! it takes a second to learn the rules, and i did have to refer to the rulebook quite a bit when i was playing it, but man i would LOVE to play cee-lo with friends/family irl. there are a LOT of opportunities for shit talk lmao. also, i had to bite the bullet and FINALLY learn mahjong, and you know what? it’s pretty good! took a while for me to get the hang of it, but not as long as i thought it would tbh. i think i’ll actually go out of my way to play it for fun when i play the other yakuza games, it’s legit pretty enjoyable. although it would prob be way more fun irl than against the ai
anyway yeah. yakuza 0 is an excellent game. 10/10
