Joint funeral for #Limpopo women that #drowned in #Mozambique The bodies of the four South Africans that drowned in Mozambique has been brought back to South Africa.  #LesegoMatsepe (20), #MmatoloMogafe (24), #GregoryMfune (27) and #DavidKaise (29) drowned whilst swimming in the sea at the Portuguese Island on Monday 14 January, Middelburg Observer reports. A large scale search was launched. The first body was recovered on Thursday 17 January with two more the next day and the last body on Saturday 19 January. The families’ spokesperson Bongani Diako, said that the bodies have been brought back to South Africa together. They will now go to their families for burial. Gregory Mfune will be buried in Bethlehem and David Kaise in Embalenhle Secunda, on Saturday. A joint funeral for the two women from Groblersdal will also be held on Saturday. The funeral for Lesego Matsepe and Mmatolo Mogafe will be held at the Groblersdal Rugby Stadium and will start at 07:00. Why Amajita are prepping on astro

Amajita are training on astro turf to prepare for the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, set to be played in Niger next month.

Amajita played ABC Motsepe League outfit Baberwa FC on astro turf at the Nike Centre in Pimville, Soweto, on Tuesday and will take on Dube Continental FC at the same venue this morning.

This is due to their first two AFCON group matches, against hosts Niger on February 2 and Burundi three days later in Group A, will be played on astro turf at Maradi Municipal Stadium. The team’s final group match will be against Nigeria at Seyni Kounche Stadium on February 8.

Coach Thabo Senong, meanwhile, was happy with how things went during their four-day camp in Nelspruit last week.

During their time in Nelspruit, Amajita played to a 2-2 draw in a practice match against National First Division side TS Sporting and they beat Mozambican professional football side Costa do Sol 3-2.

“We had good exercise in Mpumalanga. We played two friendly matches, which were very tough for us. This exercise was very helpful because it gave us the needed information regarding our players’ performances, as well as which areas we still need to improve on,” Senong told SAFA’s website.

Sundowns win record 10th title in dramatic fashion

Mamelodi Sundowns pulled off one of the most jaw-dropping comebacks in South African history, winning the Premier Soccer League on the last day of the season.

From the minute the match started, all the permutations were strongly against Pitso Mosimane guiding Sundowns to a third straight league title, and the club winning their 10th championship in history.

A few minutes later, in the other championship match, Khama Billiat controlled well from a Samir Nurkovic pass, then fired a low drive with his left past Baroka FC keeper Elvis Chipezeze.

Just before the first half ended, Chiefs were on 59 points, with Sundowns destined to head into the break trailing Chiefs by two points.

If the match had ended in the 44th minute, Chiefs were easily taking the crown they last won in 2015 by two points margin.

On top of that, this meant if Chiefs were to score a goal in their match, then Sundowns had to score a goal on top of the three that they initially needed, while also keeping Black Leopards from scoring.

And that became the tall order when Sundowns defender Ricardo Nascimento missed a penalty for the Brazilians early on.

Everything changed on the stroke of halftime, when Lebohang Maboe, a player who struggled for form for more of the season, scored to make it 1-0 to Sundowns, giving the Brazilians a sniff at the title.

That meant Sundowns needed to score three more goals in the second half to win the league.

As the second half started, Chiefs were looking for a second goal in their game, and Sundowns pushed hard to score as many as they can to improve their possibilities.

Maboe scored his brace seven minutes after the restart, meaning Sundowns now needed two more goals to win the league.

But the Brazilians was helped tremendously on the 59th minute of the Chiefs against Baroka game when Mozambican Manuel Kambala made it 1-1 for Baroka.

That effectively meant Sundowns moved to the top of the log, leading Chiefs by two points.

The fact that Sundowns were now on top with more points did not stop Mosimane’s side from pushing for more goals, and with the chances they created, they could have scored five more.

As Chiefs were struggling to break Baroka’s resistance, Maboe sealed his brace with a neat finish to win the league for Sundowns.

As Sundowns players and staff were celebrating a title in a season that they hardly had the lead, Chiefs players and their coaches were weeping, trying to make sense of how they let a title they were looking so good to win slip in the last moment.

Amakhosi had led the standings for a full year, and at some point were 13 points at the top.

Other than Sundowns winning the league, Baroka’s 1-1 draw with Chiefs meant they were safe from relegation, while Black Leopards’ loss to the Brazilians will force them to play in the promotional/relegation play-offs.

Polokwane City were relegated, and will next season play First Division football.

Orlando Pirates, a team that had a mixed season, finished third on 52 points, beating SuperSport United on goal difference to book a place in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Tanzanian giants Simba SC clinch treble with FA Cup victory

Tanzanian giants Simba SC were handed a heroic welcome back to Dar es Salaam after completing a domestic treble with victory over Namungo FC in the FA Cup final at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Sumbawanga on Sunday (2 August 2020).

Mozambican-import Luis Miquissone and skipper John Raphael Bocco combined twice to give Simba a 2-1 victory over Namungo, adding a third trophy to their 2019/2020 cabinet.

Aboard an open bus, Simba paraded their trophy all the way from the Julius Nyerere International Airport through the streets of Dar, to their iconic Kariakoo home with elated fans lining the streets to celebrate the victory.

Simba who started the campaign with victory in the Community Shield clinched the league title less than three weeks ago and the victory over league newcomers Namungo earned them a third trophy, replicating their performance from the 2016/17 season.

Miquissone opened the scoring for the Wekundu Wa Msimbazi in the 28th minute with a low shot after picking up a precise pass from Bocoo. The Mozambican then turned provider for his skipper in the 39th minute swinging in a cross that was headed in by Bocco.

Namungo pulled one back in the 56th minute through Edward Manyama, but Simba defended the lead though tensely to ensure they clinched the trophy. Miqquissone was named man of the match.

The league newcomers will be proud of their performance reaching the final of the Cup competition which also earns them a ticket to play in next season’s Total CAF Confederation Cup, with Simba playing the Champions League.
