Mount Cook

Ranked the 39th highest mountain in the world, Mount Cook is one of those sublime outer world settings that would take experienced climbers a multi-day expedition to reach to the top. So we decided to do it. Well, sort of.

We got into a little Cessna 172, and flew straight for 70 nautical miles north of Lake Wanaka and past a long view of gorgeously forbidding black and white mountains. To right and left, jostling into frame, were disorderly ranks of jagged mountains which slowly vanished into the tail of the plane. Below them, in a chasm, were piercing white glaciers.

You could die out here for sure – stumbled and shredded by a downdraft as the terrain disturbs the flow of strong winds. In the lee of Mt Cook’s summit, feeling a sudden plop that pushed us down more than a few feet, I could see that happening to us.

But never mind the fear for now. It was a confirmation that we had passed the summit – an agreeable reward for a day of courage. What we had in front of us is a powerful living force of nature that commands respect from anyone who dare come close.

Hell’s Gate

First mountain flying lesson. We are flying over Cook Strait towards what the locals call ‘Hell’s Gate’ on the South Island of New Zealand. A quick call to friendly Wellington Approach and a climb through their airspace gives us a modicum of safety as we cross these famously treacherous waters in our single engine plane. Soon we are free of controlled airspace and up in the Kaikoura Ranges. Usually, flying at 9,000 feet above sea level more or less guarantees a panorama. But not here. Tall mountains sneak up on us while the valleys play peek-a-boo.

We are amidst pastel shades of grey, green and black, and an occasional white of jaunty snowy caps. And experience stillness, something that is unheard of here. The wind Gods listened to us for once, and it helped that other pilots weren't feeling too adventurous today.

Beyond, down a slight incline is the lake with the clearest waters in the world - a fact celebrated only by a very small group of skilled and intrepid pilots and mountaineers. In the distance, endless range of snow specked mountains, with a specific Tapuae-O-Uenuku just rolling off our tongues. Far below, squeezed into a narrow valley, is a river, a long, fjord-like arm of pale green water. All else in every direction is quiet, untouched, endlessly magnificent and challenging terrain of South Island.
