PACIFIC RIM 3? ORIGINAL STAR SAYS HE'D RETURN — ON ONE BIG CONDITION

The Pacific Rim star couldn’t appear in Uprising, but he’s down for more monster-fighting action.

Pacific Rim may have garnered a cult following in the decade since its theatrical release, but the struggles of its sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, kept the fledgling franchise from reaching new heights.

Director Guillermo Del Toro was clearly passionate about building out his “giant robots fight giant kaiju” world, having planned a second and third Pacific Rim film just a year after the original’s unprecedented success abroad. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t to be: the director moved on to The Shape of Water and was replaced by Daredevil’s Steven DeKnight. A handful of cast members would return for Uprising, but OG star Charlie Hunnam wasn’t among them.

Hunnam played Jaeger pilot Raleigh Beckett in Del Toro’s 2013 film. He survives the events of Pacific Rim, along with co-pilot Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), but Mako reprises their role in Uprising while Raleigh scarcely gets a mention. The actor told Collider he’d been “part of the conversation” when Del Toro was still building out the films. “I think that his vision for it included me. But by the time they circled around and decided that they were gonna make it with a different director, we had a conversation about it, but I was booked up.”

Uprising didn’t exactly ruin the franchise — the battle between Jaeger and kaiju continued in the Netflix anime Pacific Rim: The Black — but it did, at least, seem to be the end for Hunnam. “When I didn’t do the sequel, I think that probably closed that chapter for me,” the actor said in 2020. Three years later, though, there’s still a slim chance for Hunnam’s return... but only if Del Toro is also on board for a sequel.

There aren’t any current plans for a Pacific Rim 3, but if the franchise’s original steward were to come back for it, then Hunnam would return without question. “I would do anything that Guillermo was doing,” the actor told Inverse while promoting Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. “If Guillermo invites me to do Pacific Rim 3, I’ll be there. Or anything else he wants to do.”

Del Toro is currently working on his adaptation of Frankenstein, and hasn’t expressed much interest in revisiting the Pac-Rim world. He stated he had “no plans” to return in 2021, and still has yet to catch the sequel, likening it to the idea of “watching home movies from your ex-wife.” Of course, plans are always subject to change. Pacific Rim 3 could still technically happen one day, and if it does, we at least know its leading man is already locked in.

If this pans out no one will remember PR2 and maybe they can bring Mako back somehow...

I’ve got my first university assignment due in 2 days, which is fine, I’m working on it. But! I’m also in the midst of a particularly gnarly Gastroparesis flare up, as well as handling my rats post-surgery, helping care for my Ma who is in the middle of a pseudo-relapse (she has Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis), and trying to work a little bit on Mori Moon Co.

I’m tired, Ghouls. I am -500 spoons, at the moment. Life is hard.

Age: 19 after his resurrection (Verse dependent)

Arcana: Fool, Death, Judgement, Universe.

Persona: Orpheus, Thanatos (formerly) and Messiah.

Personality: Stoic, reserved, calm, aloof, introverted, distant, passive, apathetic, blunt, quiet, indifferent, neutral, somewhat of a glutton (due to high metabolism) and drowsy (due to poor sleeping habits).

Appearance: Slim and lithe build, slightly unkempt hair in the front that covers his right eye, wearing a school uniform of Gekkoukan High, accented with a loosely done black bow tie, a neck strap mp3 along with clip-on headphones (rarely seen without these) and dark pants with somewhat formal looking shoes to go with his attire.

Abilities: Using an Evoker with very little difficulty due to not being afraid of death, using his Wild Card ability (capable of summoning various Personas), able to handle any sort of weapon, quicker than most due to his build, effectively fighting Shadows with ease due to his apathetic attitude and battling without much concern for his own safety thus able to take massive risks as well damage, due to having Death sealed within himself amplified his capabilities of using various Personas.

[About]

-Being an orphan at a young age due to a car crash that happened during the Dark Hour and severely traumatized of the events led to him forgetting of that night (for a long period of time), Makoto is very indifferent to the point of not caring of either life or death because of it which causes him to be quite an introverted person as time passed.

On his move to Port Island due to returning after a few years and being late on arriving due to a person’s suicidal that happened on the train tracks earlier, Makoto is quite confused to when the night scenery changes due to the Dark Hour along with his headphones and music player not working before heading to the Dorm that he later meets a mysterious boy (Pharos) then signing a contract that was presented to him.

Shortly after he transfers to Gekkoukan High School though it’s later revealed that why this is so is due to his capability to adapt to the Dark Hour, leading him to be moved to the co-ed dorm to where his potential is monitored because of it. The night after on arriving at the Dorm a Shadow attacks the dorm which leads to another student (Yukari Takaba) to try lead Makoto to safety, though he tells her it doesn’t matter if he dies even to ask if dying is that scary. Moments later Makoto uses an Evoker without much difficulty due to him not being afraid of death, awakens his Persona Orpheus but it’s summoning is interrupted by Thanatos who bursts free from within Orpheus before dispatching the Shadow and faints shortly after.

During the time he’s unconscious he awakens in the Velvet Room (a place exists between dream and reality, mind and matter), also being told that he has the power of the Wild Card which lets Makoto wield multiple Personas and switch between them in battle along. A week passes after his fight the Shadow he later comes out of his short coma and later learns of the Shadows and the existence of S.E.E.S [ Verses ] -Memento Mori - Pre-Fall verse (Age 17): - Dealing with changes in his life without much comment, Makoto settles into school life along with handing his duties as the leader of S.E.E.S when working on exterminating Shadows during the Dark Hour. Getting accustomed to the ties that he builds along with his many comrades/friends and slowly breaking that wall of his even showing a rare smile, over time when defeating the large Shadows with each passing full moon he wavers in his decisions and becoming distant again to some degree.

While closed off to the group he avoids much that he fears in losing due to being all alone again when the Dark Hour is erased from existence, later on feeling the sting of betrayal from the one that helped out S.E.E.S and being more cautious of others along with their intentions. Although months later on meeting the mysterious Ryoji Mochizuki he can’t help but open up again yet only to feel let down again from learning of the other’s true name and purpose, not wanting to put everyone through nor wanting to end his new friend’s life he decides to continue living until the fated day where he meet Ryoji again on the top of Tartarus.

After the events of the final fight and being able to see the graduation ceremony along with cherry blossoms, though knowing he’ll pass soon Makoto enjoyed his limited time with all that he come to know then passing away in his sleep. Completing his end of the contract and resulting him becoming the Great Seal and acting as a wedge to keep humanity safe.

-Miracle from the Beyond - Post-Fall verse [Default]: Makoto returning to the living after sacrificing himself to become the Great Seal now wanders about the world in wondering of to why he is back and confused of this, may it be a miracle or having help from Elizabeth and Theodore to be broken free from his chains after becoming the Great Seal. No matter what the case may be Makoto spends his time drifting while thinking if he’s returned is there a chance that Ryoji possibly have returned as well, along with having most of his Persona intact along with Orpheus who reverted back from being Messiah though Makoto doesn’t seem to mind this also having his Evoker, his weapon and the S.E.E.S armband on his uniform.

-Mysterious Exchange Student From Beyond - [Obey Me! Verse]: Wondering as to what even be going on while staring back at the various demons that summoned him, leaving an odd impression when not bothered of being among demons and other beings due to having been used to unnatural and supernatural beings before summoned to Devildom.

Having most of his things on his person when whisked away to be here and not too fazed of demons getting in his face for being a human, unnerving them in response while not fearing Death who also seemed to have traveled with him to this odd world. Not against in pulling out his Evoker and scaring both Diavolo as well of the demon brothers of seeing this suicidal like act, chilled of how Makoto can easily point the supposed gun to his head till pulling the trigger and causing Orpheus to appear before them.

Showing to them that he isn’t a normal human and telling how he died once then was brought back to the living along with a dear friend who he tells as also part of this program too, leaving various impressions on the demons and others while used to the dark place that be Devildom while oddly at peace too from the look of it. So begins the Wildcard’s odd journey in this realm of demons and other beings. [ Headcanons ] -At a young age Makoto had times where he be awake during the Dark Hour after the incident of his parents dying in a car crash, only company he have be a mysterious little boy (Pharos) that seemed to be quite taken with him even being friends with him as well. Whenever Makoto was awake during the Dark Hour as a small child he would sit there and wait for his ‘friend’ to appear, most of the chats were one sided mostly due to Makoto not talking much or not at all.

When discharged from the hospital it was a rough time since he now was put in the care of relatives he didn’t know much of or even put in a foster home at times, most of these times there be a rare time of when ones that didn’t like him bully him even they also be wake during the Dark Hour. Some of these incidents didn’t end well mostly due to his friend stepping in and protecting him even to kill/murder to do so, brushing off the ‘deaths’ of the ones that bullied him which he forgotten over time along with his friend since he barely remembered much of the mystery boy after a few years.

Not until later on when Makoto is at the dorm his mysterious friend again helps him though it causes him to go into a coma as a result (Thanatos belonging to his friend and that they couldn’t control the mystery Persona at the time), leads to Makoto nurturing both the odd Persona and of getting reacquainted with his friend even to give them a name since he didn’t know if that they had a name or not.

-Sleeping habits of Makoto’s are a bit odd considering that he stayed awake during Dark Hour quite often as a child, leading to how calm he is when walking to the dorm while confused since he rarely remembers much of it and staying awake at times during the hour before settling in for the night. Repeated times of this as a child led to his sleeping clock to be askew compared to others and of him sleeping occasionally when not much is going on, main example of it be sleeping in class (while in Gekkoukan High School) at times yet still able to keep up with schoolwork when putting focus into homework even during the Dark Hour.

Some light teasing from others be that Makoto is like a cat that naps when in the mood, especially when other S.E.E.S members catch a rare glimpse of him napping on the couch when at the dorm. More to confirm this be whenever someone of the group as to get Makoto out of bed at rare occasions and dealing with a somewhat grumpy person that gives a glare from the blankets, comically as it be most of the members dread the fact that one of them have to pull of this duty (until Aigis joins them later on) although he gets used to it as time goes on minus the occasional loud noise.

-Though many that first see or meet Makoto write him off as being unemotional person it be something that be partially true but that’s because Makoto doesn’t express things how everyone else would, especially smiles since whenever he smiles there be a though that he looks a bit ‘creepy’ when seeing that but it changes over time when he’s with others (though still pulling that creepy smile out just to be a tease when his odd humor shows).

Throughout his time spent with S.E.E.S he slowly ‘relearns’ of emotions and of expressing them leading to him sparking those lost emotions buried deep inside, also making him think of how it is to be alive and causing him to cherish his bonds with others more since he knows his time is limited due to his contract that he signed. Why this be is because after his witnessing of both his parents dying in the car crash as a child it caused him to lock almost all his emotions away, this be due to it being painful for him until numbing himself to everything over time until later on when with S.E.E.S and other people he opens up to feeling again along with the pain that was held back for so many years too.

-Makoto’s headphones (along with his music player) are something that he uses to block out the world at times yet finds calmness in even to feel ‘safe’ when listening to his music, half the time Makoto can be seen wearing them when not busy with personal stuff or other important things and heard humming at rare times depending on his mood or the song he’s listening to. Makoto is quite attached to his headphones since they are like a ‘security’ blanket or comfort item along with his music player, he gets nervous or annoyed when one grabs at them without permission though he doesn’t say much on it but a light tap to the other person’s hand along with a frown makes his point be known.

Though when with someone he’s alright in hanging with he’ll let them listen to his music and use his headphones to listen what beats he has on one of few playlists he listens to, Makoto will even put a small list of songs together and sharing it with ones he feels a strong closeness to as well. Said playlists may be sent via email or text at times when he can’t reach the person he want to share them with, while other times he drops by with a paper list with neatly written names of songs and where to find them as well (due to his knack of finding musics from various places).

-While being back among the living from his mysterious return, Makoto spends most of his time in trying to figure out as to why this be though and confused of Shadows still existing without the Dark Hour as well. Also curious if Ryoji also returned as well and going off on his own to search for the odd ravenette in a yellow scarf, along with Orpheus who is also confused as to being back to normal having been reverted from being Messiah. Another reason for the reverting be due to Thanatos now being Ryoji since Makoto given them over as a gift, seeing that Ryoji was actually the one that manifested Thanatos all that time ago.

Though on his return to the world he still wears his uniform along with his S.E.E.S gear, though considered to be still 'dead’ to ones he knew till coming across them by rare chance there be a moment of where he merely nods at them before moving on his way. Leading to his existence being like that of a 'ghost’ supposedly until proven wrong after awhile, on being asked as to why he’s returned it be one question that Makoto can’t answer due to not knowing the answer to really.

Skills he learned over his time spent with S.E.E.S still are there yet somewhat rusty from lack of use from being 'dead’ for a period of time until coming back, feeling the battle rush return after a few fights starts to spark that old fire of his when facing off against any Shadows that still exist in the world.

Also having that slight feeling Ryoji is somewhere in the world until finally meeting up again and greeting 'Death’ like an old friend (when in reality it is like that), even to be seen with the one called 'Death’ for a time before parting ways for a while though later reconnecting when wanting to visit one another. Plus giving Ryoji some pointers on summoning Thanatos with an extra Evoker that he managed to get and lending a hand to his friend, also surprised that Ryoji can call forth his former fragments that were once the large Arcana Shadows that were fought against though under a controlled hand by Ryoji.

5 times Tachihara is shocked by people kissing his co-worker on the cheek and one time he does it himself

Chapter: 4/6 - Dazai

He doesn't witness any strange interactions between his coworkers and his partner during the next couple of weeks and for a second Tachihara almost manages to forget it all but alas, luck was never written in the stars for a guy like him and only two days after he'd just about relaxed and let his guard down, it happens again.

Or more precisely, it happens between Gin and that agency member Dazai Osamu.

Now, he knew Akutagawa was somehow obsessed with this man, but how the hell had this traitor somehow gotten his claws into Gin as well?

It happens while they're on their way back from a run of the mill shakedown of one of their providers, and Tachihara and Gin are hobbling their way back; nursing their joint injuries when a sharp whistle cut through the air.

They are immediately on high alert. Back to back with guns and blades pointing outwards; protecting each other's flanks.

Tachihara was tense. Muscles taunt and a grimace of a shadow carving across his mouth.

It was times like these; when he couldn't predict an ambush or an attack that he almost instinctively defaulted to his ability.

'But I can't,' he told himself, eyes narrow and gaze searching. 'I can't let Gin find out.'

And speaking of Gin.

"At ease," came a cheerful voice from... above them? And sure enough, a shadow dropped down from the sky with all the grace of a wingless bird and crashed down in front of them.

"Ouch," the shadow said; voice muffled, an all Tachihara could do was blink in confusion and surprise.

"What?" He said, gun momentarily slacking.

The figure on the ground was quick to scramble back on his feet and brush himself of with a airy laugh, head tilted down so his hair was shielding his face and bandaged fingers skimming lightly across his coat, wiping away imaginary dust.

"Sorry, sorry," the mistery figure hummed. "I was sure the fall would kill me, but hey" he shrugged. "What can you do."

At this point, Tachihara had pretty much guessed who the weirdo was and his gun; while not fully lowered, was looking much less threatening in his grip.

"Dazai Osamu," he said slowly, voice wholy unimpressed. "What are you doing here?"

His tone didn't seem to deter their unwanted guest any; in fact only spurring him on as he with a quick swish of his body, passed by Tachihara as if he wasn't there and was now curling his whole body around Gin like an octopus.

"I came to check in on my adorable little Gin," he exclaimed; eyes watering superficially.

"Your brother was worried and distracted throughout his mission so I came to check on you to give him a peace of mind!" All the while he was rubbing his cheek against the white mask covering half of Gin face, patting the man condescendingly atop of his head and swaying both their bodies back and forth.

Brother? Gin? What?

"What ar- are you seriou.... why are you even here?" Tachihara spluttered; red faced and annoyance driving him up the wall.

The simple fact of Dazai Osamu hugging Gin was making his stomach coil in disgust.

But his less than eloquent question only made the former port mafia member snort in amusement.

"I already told you," he said; nuzzling even closer to Gin and making Tachihara's heckles rise. "I came to make sure Gin was ok."

"Well he is," Tachihara snapped. Irriation coursing through his veins. "So leave."

Whatever he said most have amused Dazai greatly because the older male laughed loudly at his threatening tone and tucked his face into the crook of Gin's neck.

"Don't wanna," he muttered where he was hiding behind his partner's hair. "Gin is warm and soft. I like hugging him."

This had gone on long enough.

Fingers twitching at the trigger, itching to fire a shot into that smug bastard's face, Tachihara took a deep breath, then another, to calm his fraying nerves.

“Don't shoot your temporary ally," he muttered to himself. 'Do not shoot your temporary ally. Mori-sensei wouldn't be happy about it and if you get kicked out, the hunting do.... Do not shoot your temporary ally.'

Dazai seemed to find his whole struggle amusing and Tachihara would have done anything at that point to wipe that smug look of his face if he hadn't keenly noticed how unbothered Gin appared to be about the whole situation.

In fact, his partner had all but put all of his knives way at this point, thin, lilt fingers reaching up slowly to card through the dark-brown tangled mess that was Dazai Osamu's hair.

The introduder sighed in content and snuggled even closer.

"Good to see you're doing well Gin," he muttered after a second of just staring down tachihara with the most shit-eating grin Tachihara had ever seen. "Gotta go now~"

And with those last sing-songy words, he jumped back; making Tachihara's shoulders fall down in almost subconscious relief before he reached out (lightening quick) grabbing Gin by the back of the neck until there was only an inch between their faces and with a momentary pause of utter michief, Dazai closed the remaining distance between them and pecked the white cloth over Gin's face; right where his mouth would have been.

Tachihara turned beet red. Cheek flushes so bright he was afraid they would never dim down again.

What the... wh.... did he just... Gin -- how dare he just...

A light twinkle of a laughter escaped passed Gin right as he was about to lose it, and Tachihada froze in surprise.

Gin eyes widening with a mirrored shock as he too seemed taken of guard by his own action but then his shoulders fell back down and his eyes crinkled at the corners and without sparing Tachihara so much as a glance, leaned over and brushed his bandaged mouth over Dazai's cheek.

Tachihara felt something in his chest crumble.

The action was all playful and fond, and looking closer none of it looked particularly sexual or romantic, but the fact that Gin was comfortable with Dazai to treat him in such fashion...

It made a sickening feeling lodge itself in his throat

Gin had never let his guard down around him like that.

Dazai seemed over the moon about the whole display of surprising affection though, leaning down to ruffle Gin's hair and smiling down at him with a gentleness Tachihara had only witnessed in Chuuya-san.

"Take care of yourself Gin," he said; voice dipping low and taking on a tone Tachihara couldn't really place. "And keep and eye out for anything suspecious."

With that he waved at them both casually; fingers dancing dramatically through the air before he pranced off God knows where.

Leaving Gin looking fond and Tachihara feeling nauseated.

Here’s a key for names in Blade of the Immortal rendition of the Ikedaya Affair:

桂小五郎 is Katsura Kogoro.

池田屋 is Ikedaya Inn.

新選組 is Shinsengumi.

萬次 (万次) is Manji, the protagonist (one eye, scarred face, healing powers like Wolverine from xmen. Please be aware that he wears an anti-clockwise swastika on his back invoking its original meaning: a buddhist symbol.)

Warning for Blood and Gore and Dismemberment. Now onto the good parts!

Shinsengumi:

Left to right:

藤堂平助 (Tengtang Pingzhu) is Todo Heisuke: Eighth Unit Captain -- note the fringe, the gi pattern

永倉新八 (Yongcang Xingba) is Nagakura Shinpachi: Second Unit Captain

土方歳三 (Tufang Suisan) is Hijikata Toshizo: Vice Captain

近藤勇 (Jinteng Yong) is Kondo Isami: Captain of the Shinsengumi -- he is shrouded in shadow here

沖田総司 (Congtian Zhongsi) is Okita Souji: First Unit Captain -- very beautiful and feminine

井上源三郎 (Jingshang Yuan-sanlang) is Inoue Genzaburo: Sixth Unit Captain -- an older man

原田左之助 (Yuantian Zuozhizhu) is Harada Sanosuke: Tenth Unit Captain -- very short, cropped buzzcut hair

斎藤一 (Zhaiteng Yi) is Saito Hajime: Third Unit Captain -- note the...long bangs. The fashionable gi. The body-clinging shirt. Very stoic and quiet, keeping to himself.

First 6 chapters are about Manji and sets up plot stuff. Ch 6 onwards deals with the Shinsengumi and Ikedaya.

Chapter 7 Link. Overview:

Prelude to Ikedaya. Vice Captain Hijikata Toshizo (centre, vein in head) leads a strike team to raid a store rumoured to be aiding Ishin Shishi. The team includes Okita Souji (stripy hakama) and two known, real life Shinsengumi spies: 島田 Shimada Kai (big man, mole eye) and 山崎 Yamazaki Susumu (bandana).

In the house, 古高俊太郎 Furutaka Shuntaro and some helpers are indeed moving and stockpiling weapons for the Ishin Shishi. Furutaka is Ishin Shishi. He is arrested.

Later Manji, an immortal man (buddhist swastika) is talking to a friend with wild hair 坂本龍馬 Sakamoto Ryoma (LMAO) who tells him to go visit a fellow Revolutionary: Katsura Kogoro from Choshu (so shook to learn Choshu is 长州).

Furutaka is strung upside down as Hijikata tortures him for ‘information’ (this is apparently true to records).

Manji meets 桂小五郎 Katsura (reading letter).

Chapter 8 Overview:

The Unit Captains of the Shinsengumi come together for a meeting. Kondo addresses the group, they have gotten their hands on some very juicy information thanks to Hijikata. There is some intrigue within the group. Everyone is shocked to hear of the alleged ‘the Ishin Shishi are planning to burn down Kyoto as a distraction’ plan.

(Manga specific plot: evil little doctor girl studying Manji’s immortality.)

Next, another group is also coming together on rare occasion. The Ishin Shishi revolutionaries are introduced arriving at the Ikedaya Inn. People from Tosa Clan, Choshu Clan, Higo Clan. (This is before Sakamoto Ryoma struck a deal between Satsuma and Choshu. Satsuma is still in court as moderate reformists. They are against Choshu and co at this time.)

Chapter 9 casual translation:

The Shinsengumi gear up. They have tips on two inns, they split up to cover both. The two spies are their own group, their go-between.

Inside the Ikedaya 宫部鼎藏 Miyabe Teizo (white beard, moon gi - from Higo) and Katsura discuss their plans in light of the Shinsegumi’s weapons bust. Miyabe was a real life extremist, in here he scorns Katsura for not wanting to burn Kyoto during the Gion festival. The original plan was to take the Imperial Palace while Kyoto burns (never proved if this was real in history, but allegedly, yea).

Katsura makes a vote of non-confidence. “We should not attack the imperial palace because failure is possible. And if we fail we will never heal from the scars of this defeat. The revolution will be over.” “We should not attack, especially since we have lost valuable stores of weapons.”

Miyabe: “Then what does Katsura-kun suggest?” (just worked out right now 君 is kun)

Katsura: “We wait. Tosa’s Sakamoto Ryoma-kun has travelled to Ezo for negotiations and planning. It will not be amiss to wait.” (Ezo today is Hokkaido, North Japan.)

But another man called Yoshida goes: “That’s too benign/ mild. I am from Choshu Clan as well...but I think Katsura-sensei’s reasoning is too compromising/ safe. These mild, half-hearted strategies only get in the way of things that we can achieve when we give it our all. To protect the country, sacrifices are a given.”

(I cannot for the life of me find out who 吉田Yoshida [can’t translate given name] is.) Everyone cheers for Yoshida’s pro-burning, anti-Katsura hot take.

Manji: “Are you dumb or what? Your plan is a mess.” “You love to act on your feelings like thought experiments(?) What an idealistic bunch.”

Miyabe: “How about this, then...we change our plans.”

Pg 12 Miyabe: “We attack the Shinsengumi’s Mibu den. We rescue Furutaka. The likelihood of success is higher.”

Resounding ‘Hell yes! We’re not afraid of no Shinsengumi, good idea’ cries.

Manji: “You guys did not come here to discuss did ya?”

Outside the meeting room, a few guards hear some noise downstairs. Since they are out of booze, one goes to very half heartedly check downstairs and get more booze while he’s at it.

The Shinsengumi arrive. The raid starts.

...

Okita: “Looks like the Ikedaya was the right inn.”

Nagakura: “Alrighty. Let’s go teach’em a lesson.”

...

People come out of the meeting room. “What’s all that noise down there?”

“So freaking noisy!”

Insane Kondo Isami who apparently famously said:

“Routine Inspection!!”

“Shin....shin...SHINSENGUMI!”

Manji: “Ha--ahh??”

Next panels shows the Shinsengumi covering all the exists on the first floor. (Todo Heisuke with the fringe and cross-hatched hakama).

Pg 28 Todo Heisuke wonders about reinforcements that haven’t joined in tonight (not sure who they are.) Okita coughs cos he has tb.

Todo Heisuke: “Are you alright, Okita-sensei? You’ve been coughing quite a lot lately.”

Okita: “I apologise. I’ve made you worry.” “...tonight the condition I’m in can be considered quite good.”

*Equips poison damage to sword.*

“Don't even have the cold tremors of 芹澤先生 Serizawa-sensei.”

(Referring to none another than Serizawa Kamo, the original leader of the Shinsengumi. He historically did not have tb or die of disease though...Kondo’s side initiated a hostile takeover of the Shinsengumi and he was eventually Assassinated under orders from Protector of Kyoto, Matsudaira. Apparently in this version he was not assassinated. Funny of Okita to mention this...)

Yamazaki (bandana spy) runs by: “Vice Captain!”

“What is it?”

“It’s the Ikedaya Inn!”

“Confirmed?”

“Yes...about 40 people...including that man with one eye.” (Manji, cos he’s the main character.)

I thought what went on in the Ikedaya was actually quite interesting so translated most of it. The rest is mostly self explanatory, lost of fighting, dismemberment, immortal hijinks.

Chapter 10 and rest of chapters here.

Chapter 10 covers how Katsura famously jumps the window to escape (which got him a bad name for a bit as the window-jumping coward LOL.)

Manji jumps down right in front of Todo Heisuke. But he doesn’t particularly want to kill anyone. Manji himself used to be very skilled with the sword, but since he’s been immortal for more than 100 years he has a pretty low regard for his own bodily wellbeing. Which gives some pretty intense scenes so be warned.

Todo is good with the sword -- but Okita is on another level. Okita is the prodigy of prodigies.

Ch 11-12 Okita v Immortal Manji, Kondo v Miyabe. The Kondo scenes are NOT to be missed! Manji is a great swordsman when he tries, but in what I think is a bold move, the manga makes the point to tell us he is NOT as good a swordsman as Okita. Okita is stronger! Okita is more skilled!

But Manji...cannot die.

The second Shinsengumi group arrive to reinforce the first. Hijikata and Saito are here. Katsura v Shinsengumi foot soldiers. Bakufu soldiers are also called to the scene -- but Hijikata tells them to sod off, this is a Shinsengumi raid and they’ll take good care of it. Manga oc villainesses arrive.

Ch 13-14 also very interesting. Okita has been gored by Manji. Kondo and Hijikata hear that Okita has been injured. This is incredible to them, because Okita is their best swordsman.

Katsura and Manji escape back to Choshu’s estate (can see the Mori Clan mon/crest, one line, three dots beneath it). Katsura, basically: FUCK!! FUUCKK!! Man the doors, no one in or out!” “Today...the Shinsengumi won this one.” “But this...is far from over.”

Kondo petitions the doctor girl to do anything to save Okita. Even okaying super dangerous experimental surgery (this is to do with the wild manga plot where the doctor girl is studying Manji’s immortality -- he’s infested with helpful parasites that mend his wounds called ‘blood worms.’) Doctor girl: organ transplant dangerous. Kondo: DO IT!

If the surgery is successful -- I think Okita is immortal too!!!! BUT if it is unsucessful, Okita will turn basically into a zombie.

(Some VERY Frankenstein-ish horror imagery jump scare when the mad scientists show us what will happen to Okita if the Immorality surgery goes WrongTM.)

Behold, this zombie man, test subject for the blood worm immortality tests is --- 芹澤 Serizawa Kamo. Original leader of the Shinsengumi with a fate worse than death. It looks like the Shinsengumi, or at least Kondo and HIjikata are in cahoots with the mad scientists in some way -- the shadowy villainesses are all on their side. Anyways, the doctor girl works out that Okita’s wound was Not That Bad and he Should Be Dead -- and makes the connection that he was stabbed by Manji.

I think the implication is that Manji unknowingly transferred the blood worms to him through his extremely unhygienic stab. (Need the prior knowledge to know that people with the same blood type are able to accept the blood worm parasites...)

So now Okita might be ~immortal~

Starts off as historically accurate dramatisation for the most part -- then goes into 1864 bakumatsu scifi. You’re welcome.
