The idea that it is somehow "bad writing" if rhaenyra has a better character than aegon imo is fundamentally misunderstanding the point of the conflict
The dance is not about two completely equal factions where you choose the one you prefer ro root for like a sport's match... the point is that rhaenyra's succession as the by far eldest child was set in stone by viserys, and yet people argue and doubt it and want to depose her exclusively on account of her gender; if she had been a man noone would even be having this discussion
The point is that even if Aegon is a s*x pest and not qualified and never even wanted to be king anyways people will still think he somehow is the one deserving of the throne over rhaenyra and call him the only valid king of this conflict in the annals of history, for no other reason than that he was the firstborn male child of viserys
And for sure Rhaenyra and her faction will do their own share of war crimes in the future once everyone starts playing dirty, but it is important that she is presented as just a normal person in the beginning; her succession is not doubted because she is uniquely bad of character, it is doubted because she breaks centuries of patriarchal tradition

Future Hopes.
I want to be happy.
I want to feel alive again.
I want to be myself again, but nothing works.
I have loved you since the day I met you, but still, you don’t even notice me.
I believe I will get over you.
And maybe someday I will start smiling again.
Someday, I hope.

every time someone says “why didnt the eagles fly the ring into mordor” it pisses me off so much cause its usually a “casual watcher of the movies” criticism but the movies literally give the answer right there
Tumblr media
like come on man. thats why they didnt. it was supposed to be a stealth mission. the end. cant have the eagles get hacked apart by huge fuckass dragons or hell speared by arrows or whatever cause theres a literal all seeing eye watchtower over the land

Not fond of the many theories i see about jon taking mance' cloak and becoming king beyond the wall, like that's pretty much the plot of avatar (2009)... Not the direction i want asoiaf to pivot to. One of the best things about the wildling plot in acok/asos is the very fact that it doesnt fall into the typical pitfalls of "man from the oppressor class joins indigenuous culture" type stories, like jon stays in a side role, doesn't overtake leadership, doesn't become the main special boy that everyone else bows to, learns from them but then leaves to use what he learned to influence the politics of his own people instead of staying and "doing it better than them" because of his unique oppressor class skills

i always feel mance and his role going forward is criminally underanalyzed in fandom... not only is he one of the first mentioned characters in the books (name dropped early in the prologue) but he also appears by name(!) in grrm’s super old first outline of the books

Characters fandom needs to accept are bald and or hardcore balding:
- squidward
- ingo and emmett from pokemon
- stannis baratheon
If i see one more generous hairline on any of these you have to pay me 5$ and watch one episode of breaking bad for sensitivity training

Viserys and Alicents relationship fascinates me... He desires her company, especially in vulnerable situations (like after his wife's death, or when hes being medically treated), but it doesn't seem like he necessarily truly loves her or is that fond of her for her own self's sake... it's more like that in this medieval society, with him as a man and king, the emotional comfort a wife may give him is the only one he is truly "allowed" to have, and she is the one who is bound by law to be loyal to him and dependent on him
He cannot get comfort from and show weakness to his political partners even if he may consider them friends, as he needs to at all times project a sense of power and superiority as a man and king (comparable to how alicent says, ever since she became queen she has had " few friends" because her status changed so much); and all the family he has left is estranged or far away (and even if he was not on shaky grounds to rhaenyra, as a father hed be unlikely to want to put this emotional labor/vulnerability on her, as again he has to project a certain power dynamic)
So while he might confide in his maesters or trusted lyonel strong, in the end it falls to little alicent, who can't say no, who has seemingly no station or power to be dangerous to him or do political machinations with the gained knowledge, who is young enough to not be able to exert power over him, to give his soul the most personal comfort in the bad things he goes through...
A dynamic that depending on how the show adapts things might bite him in the ass in the future as alicent emancipates herself (as seen in last episode where she is suddenly nowhere to be found when viserys needs her, and no longer quite plays the pliable wife)

Seeing a lot of people complain that bayonetta 3 showed them that these games arent made as womens power fantasies/etc at all and are instead made for men's fantasies, but i wanna present the option that this was already apparent in 2
Like, in the impression of me as someone who really liked Luka in the first game, he's super cute looking and sort of well intentioned with a mildly angsty storyline going on and most importantly while he is a "simp", hes always inferior and never poses a threat; perfect safe handsome guy to ogle at in your woman power fantasy game (saw someone compare him to a bond girl even). If we play this game assuming it's "for women", he'd appear to be the hot character pandering to straight girls (while jeanne is for the wlw)
However in the second game, suddenly in his appearances he has no character intrigue and instead becomes extremely slapstick heavy to the point that he was cringe enough i could not find him appealing anymore, which killed my interest enough that after a break of playing pokemon i never picked it up again
To me this shift recontextualizes his entire character: instead of being a cute guy for girls to enjoy, his character was actually meant to be some sort of weird comedic self insert for straight male players (and what i heard about 3's ending seems to confirm this)
So my thesis statement is that if bayonetta was truly made for the girlies we would have known it because they wouldnt have made luka cringe; making him a proper fantasy for girls is the one thing that truly doesnt do anything for the straight male gaze

Looking forward to Laenor's story arc in house of the dragon... the show so far has built up rhaenyra as someone at odds with and frightened by the path of a traditional lady (married against your will, being made to bear heirs at the risk of her life), and agrees to laenor only under duress
However, with laenor being gay, she might find a comfort in this marriage prospect, since by nature he likely will not force her to anything (while the last episode showed alicent's suffering under having to answer viserys' desires)... The books show he seemed to have been cool with the harwin situation, so the show might expand on this friendship
Rhaenyra is also seen as someone chafing against gender norms, arguing against what is expected to her due to her gender; laenor as corlys' heir meanwhile likely also struggles with expectations of marriage and children set by his father and the expectations of masculinity set by society... Rhaenyra has in past episodes often lamented how much men "get away with" and "are allowed to", and Laenor might now show her that things aren't as easy as she thinks when you are not conforming to the standards of masculinity and how he too suffers under their society's rules. This might see them find a common ground and deepen their relationship, being able to expand each others world views but also showing understanding and comfort to each other's struggles

fandom has a lot of trouble grasping the concepts of "characters may lash out and say things that they dont mean" and "characters may say things that they meant one way but are received as having a different meaning by other characters"

A special kind of hell is when there are roles about fat people being disgusting and evil or being bullied and then they still cast skinny people (fatsuits or even without)... cant even let us have that one?

Writers need to relaize that unless youre some gameythrones style show, threat of death (like action scenes etc) usually doesnt cause thrill in audiences cause most people can suss out who has plot armor and who doesnt... you gotta branch out and threaten emotional relationships (disappointing/letting down a friend, etc), or a character being unable to do something they deeply desire thats non-vital to the plot, etc... if your story by nature will not feature death then you gotta put your stakes onto other things

They did shiv so dirty thank you for pointing out that she is a woman and misogyny exists! Kendall gets a semblance of an actual arc with addiction issues and struggling with his fathers worldviews/way of approaching things and how it affects him and how he should act, shiv i guess is a woman and becomes like her mother because she is a woman and pregnart and married to a man because she is a woman, god bless, this is really all we amount to huh
Like there is depicting misogyny but if your only major female character's major point in the story amounts to a cautionary tale about patriarchy then you, the writer, are reducing women to being women just as much as patriarchy does. There are in fact other things going on in womens lives than the impact of men on them
