“Go away, Tavelle,” Essek bites out, still not turning. “I don’t feel like playing games tonight.” “Aw, why not?” Lucien whines but there’s still something razor sharp in it. “Shouldn’t we be celebrating, princeling? Four consecutive years, that’s quite the feat.” Following his fourth year winning gold at the Grand Prix of Figure Skating, Essek Thelyss is... tired. With the gilded veneer falling away from competing and mounting expectations from his coach and country, the approaching season looks bleak. That is, until Lucien Tavelle—by all accounts the second best skater in the world and Essek's media-assigned rival—begins to carve out a space for himself in Essek's life.
Hello friends, today I bring you my last fic of the year, as well as my 100th fic: written for my wonderful friend @rainbowcaleb , I have for you all my Luciessek Figure Skating AU! This behemoth of a fic was an absolute delight to write, I had so much fun with these purple boys and the world around them. I hope you all enjoy it 💜💜💜
Also!!! Extra special thanks to @spottedenchants for helping me researching skating things, helping me sort out some of the background/behind the scenes aspects, as well as introducing me to Yuri on Ice, where very loosely inspired this fic :3

Chanse's Mix-n-Match C2 Fic Recs - Part 1
Never done one of these before, so I figured I'd give it a go :D No particular theme to these, aside from them occupying a corner of my brain.
~
eyes like coin of gold; lips a reddest rose by vietbluecoeur (vietbluefic)
T, F/M & Gen, Archive Warnings: GDoV & MCD, Complete (1 Ch, 15.6k)
Greyro Ace Yussa/Marion (btwn romantic and platonic)
In which a lady lives in a castle. In which a dragon soon moves in. In which they build a life and a love, together.
If you have been following me for a while, you have likely seen me mention this fic. Both delicate and visceral, eyes like coin of gold is a veritable Beauty and the Beast-esque tale of trust and intimacy, with imagery, sentiment, and a happily ever after to match. Every aspect is lovingly described in vivid, storybook detail, and this is one I wish I could read for the first time over and over.
~
letters to a figure on the horizon by vietbluecoeur (vietbluefic)
G, Gen, NAWA, Complete (1 Ch, 7.3k)
Aro Ace Yussa /& Marion
In which a lady known for her laughter no longer can, and a new friend helps her gain her joy again.
A mix between prose and epistolary, the first half of this one has a little bit of a mystery to it while the entire thing keeps with an overarching fairy tale feeling. I found Yussa's aloofness very, very funny, and it's very sweet to see him sway towards wrapping his care with it. Also Yussa and Marion are same town pen pals and I hold them to my heart.
~
Refusing Fortune's Favor by @catgirlthecrazy
G, M/M, NAWA, Complete (1 Ch, 1.8k)
Essek/Caleb (Pre-Relationship)
In which the wizards consider the memory of souls, and what future paths past decisions may make.
A conversation fic set in Caleb's tower while the wizards are on their independent Aeor adventure, this one hurts! And it's sweet! Perfect for the wizards if you ask me. What did Matt mean when he said Essek refused consecution because of dunamantic theories? Well, here's a look at exactly that.
~
Breaking Inertia by @futureshieldmaiden
T, M/M, NAWA, Complete (10 Ch, 31k)
Essek/Caleb (Getting Together)
In which Caleb and Essek get stuck in a time loop, and have to work together to get out of it.
A time loop Scourger AU! I'll admit, I read this one so fast that I completely bypassed the potential for some intense dramatic irony, so. Take that as you will. It was interesting seeing how the puzzle pieces fell into place, and very satisfying when they finally made it out!
~
the weighted thread of foresight by @essektheylyss
T, Gen, NAWA, Complete (6 Ch, 11111)
Essek & Abrianna Mirimm, Essek & Deirta
In which a young Essek receives a well-rounded education, with divination supplementary to lessons on life.
Set decades and decades ago, this Essek is not the once-Shadowhand we now know, and he quite certainly can be. It was fascinating to see the beginnings of C2-era Essek within the boy of this fic, knowing exactly where he will misstep and exactly where he will have the chances to grow. Perhaps the real diviners are the readers we are along the way. Also Abrianna is an absolute delight 10/10 no notes and Deirta has such a distinct presence even before we see her.
~
Okay that's all for now :D

Little writing excerpt because Verin is *always on my mind*
Verin and Essek grew up in, essentially, a palace. As both cathedral and their government’s capitol, the Lucid Bastion was certainly a busy place to grow up. Alongside Den Thelyss, the members of Den Kryn and Den Mirimm also called it their home, so there was no shortage of people bustling around them.
What there was a shortage of, however, was other children. Most of the people around the brothers at any given time had already lived multiple lifetimes before this one. They simply could not relate to a pair of new souls.
It seemed to suit Essek just fine. He was content with talking to their tutors and Verin and that was about it. Verin, on the other hand, was a terror. He would slip out of their apartments and wander the massive halls, looking for people to bother. Few had the patience for him. Essek, the magical prodigy he was, learned the locate creature spell just to track down little Verin as he tore through the Bastion.
The two of them lived in one of several well appointed apartments that Den Thelyss keeps in the Bastion. They had a nanny to watch over them, tutors who visited during the day, and a large assortment of family members who lived around them. But at family gatherings, Essek took to the shadows and Verin was told to go play outside.
No one seemed to notice it, but little Verin needed attention. He needed playmates his own age and he needed a parent who would listen to his long soliloquies about the frogs he found outside and his imagined adventures and the monster illustrations in this book he was reading.
For the most part, it all fell on Essek. Their tutors would indulge him for a while, but they would inevitably turn the topic too soon for Verin’s taste. And so Essek—the introvert, the quiet reader, the studious one—was constantly subjected to, well, Verin. And Verin loved him. Oh, did he love his older brother.
Essek could levitate him in the air while reading a book; Essek could conjure pretty lights in all different shades; Essek could send a message straight into Verin’s mind! But Essek could not climb a tree, or make mud pies, or bake cakes with everything thrown in them.

Den Thelyss Canon
c2e57: You can see people of the drow populace sitting and reading and paying strange attention to you. Once again, it's hard not to draw attention when you guys pass by with one of the members of Den Thelyss.
Essek, c2e62: Most of my den live within the Lucid Bastion.
Essek, c2e57: The den was very kind to accept me for one as comparably young as myself. I'm only part way into my second century, so. Caleb: A great honor. Essek: It is. Anyway.
Essek, c2e62: There's three primary dens, and a dozen dens all together. Fjord: Biylan's not one of the main three, though? Essek: No. Thelyss is one.
Essek, c2e91: My mother's name is Deirta Thelyss, she is the Umavi of my den. Jester: Which den, Thelyss den? Essek: Den Thelyss, yes. One of the multitude of dens.. shall we sit?
EGtW: The three ruling Dens—Den Kryn, Den Thelyss, and Den Mirimm—are each helmed by an Umavi.
Essek, c2e91: Den Thelyss, they would like very much to see.. our nation.. established and respected? In the broader sense of the world.
Wrap-up: The only real bond Essek had before any of you was with him, growing up. Verin was the brother that kinda got him and they got along okay, in a family that Essek did not get along with at all, and was surrounded by people he didn't get along with.
Wrap-up: He'd been a solitary figure his whole life except for his relationship with his brother. He didn't get along with his parents. He didn't get along with most people in the Dynasty unless they helped him maintain and advance his position of power and influence, and so.. you guys fucked him up!
Wrap-up: As opposed to his brother, who's very much eschewed the Dynasty culture, and his parents were very deeply steeped in the culture. Verin rides the line where, he understands, why his brother is the way he is, but he also believes a lot in the Dynasty, and the faith that the Luxon and the whole idea gives.
Essek, c2e91: There is an expectation of advancement within the faith to be consecuted. I was lucky enough and privileged enough to be born within a den to where it was not questioned.
Essek, c2e91: You are guided by an Umavi through a soul binding process. It is extensive, it entails a bunch of spoken rites. It is usually observed by many individuals of various dens, especially if you belong to one. And often when you are consecuted, you are given a path to a den. The families are expansive.
EGtW: Each Den traditionally oversees a portion of local industry, but more distinguished Dens also vie for control over aspects of spiritual or military leadership.
Fjord, c2e57: What do we call you, just Shadowhand? Or is there another name you prefer? Essek: Shadowhand Essek Thelyss. Of Den Thelyss. Jester: Den Thelyss is, like, the most popular one. Nott: Sure, we know it well. That's one of the top three, is that right? Essek: It is indeed.
Leylas, c2e57: Your deed here is noted and what quarrel you have with Lythir here is seen as absolved in the eyes of us three dens.
Waccoh, c2e62: There'd be a period of time in approving of his presence to ensure that there isn't any sort of Empire interests or muck behind the history there. After which we'd have to go and get approvals from Den Thelyss.
Caleb, c2e91: And you are, forgive me, on your first life? Essek: Yes, I'm nearly the youngest of my den.
EGtW: Essek is both respected and feared for his intelligence and cunning, and he carefully plots each step he takes to further his and his Den's climb up the hierarchy of the dynasty.
EGtW: Verin Thelyss is the younger brother of Essek and the youngest soul of Den Thelyss. Recently given command of Kryn forces in Bazzoxan, Verin hopes to bring about a victory for the dynasty that will grant him respect and acceptance from his accomplished family.
Abrianna, c2e57: When one has proven their faith through word and deed, they are claimed by one of the ruling dens and taken to be soul bound to the Luxon through the consecution.
EGtW: Not all ruling Dens like the idea of introducing what they consider lesser creatures into the consecution, leading to tensions between the people of Rosohna and the scattered villages in the Xhorhasian wilds.
Beau, c2e91: What's the worst thing you've ever done? Essek: (laughs, sighs) I would say... anger my father to the point where... he went, unprepared, into the depths of Bazzoxan and didn't return.
EGtW: The ruling class of the dynasty is seated in Rosohna, spread across twelve noble Dens—all of whom seek to one day rule the dynasty. They play an intricate political game by expanding their families of timeless souls and covertly undermining the authority of other Dens.
EGtW: Den Masters keep a careful eye out for weakness among other Dens, seeking ways to sully the reputations of their rivals while displaying their own worthiness to the Bright Queen. Such social sabotage is reminiscent of the old ways of the drow, but assassinations and acts of outright violence are rare.
EGtW: The oldest Dens, especially those helmed by an Umavi, are held in the highest esteem, and generally answer directly to the Bright Queen. The older the soul, the more prestige it holds in the dynasty.
EGtW: Within the Lucid Bastion's halls, the Bright Queen, her trusted Umavi, and their Dens work to govern and protect all citizens of the Kryn Dynasty.
EGtW: Beneath the Dens of Rosohna, guilds and Den representatives govern the other cities of the dynasty that stretch across Xhorhas, spreading the faith of the Luxon and watching over all Xhorhasians who seek the safety of civilization.

trick or treat! 👻
So I'm working on one WIP that I'm going to try my damnedest to finish this year, but after that, I really want to work on this fic: What if Delilah Briarwood, desperate to save her husband, tried to get him consecuted?
Thinking about it:
Delilah would have known about the Kryn dynasty and likely a little about dunamancy and consecution, being one of the Cerberus Assembly
Den Thelyss apparently is into international relations and trade, so having Delilah Briarwood go to Deirta would make sense.
Converting a full ass member of the Cerberus Assembly to the Luxon (and getting them to owe something) would probably seem like a good idea the Deirta and possibly Leylas
Umavi Mirimm is between lives at this point and can't knock sense into anyone
It goes wrong.
And in the background, there's a young, impressionable Essek Thelyss

So I was reading the sourcebook and noticed something
Even so, not all ruling Dens like the idea of introducing what they consider lesser creatures into the consecution, leading to tensions between the people of Rosohna and the scattered villages in the Xhorhasian wilds.
So racism against the native people, that's not great. But there are three ruling dens - Den Kryn, Den Thelyss, and Den Mirimm - so it's not certain that it's Essek's den, right?
But then we're also given
An acclaimed soldier and talented leader, Verin Thelyss is the younger brother of Essek and the youngest soul of Den Thelyss.
Verin, at somewhere around 120 years old, is the youngest member of Den Thelyss. Meaning they don't have anyone from a species with a lifespan shorter than 120 years who hasn't been reborn at least once, which would mean they haven't allowed any lesser creatures, aka goblinkin, into the den.
I think Den Thelyss might be the racial elitists of the dens.

With dunamancy and Aeor being brought up this campaign so far, I am seriously hoping for an Essek cameo(much like Allura in CR2). Any thoughts on that or other possibilities?
I think it's definitely possible, although I'm pretty skeptical about it. I think direct connections to the Mighty Nein are going to be a lot harder to come by than direct connections to Vox Machina, for the same reason the PCs have at least 3 direct connections to Vox Machina (Laudna - Delilah + Vex Sun Tree Body, Orym - Keyleth's Bodyguard, Bertrand - Honorary VM Member). Vox Machina was the story of legendary heroes with high-level connections and it's also much further in the past at this point.
The M9 was the story of a quiet group of misfits who saved the world without anyone even knowing it, who then returned to their separate lives. It's also only been a couple years since the M9 happened (can't remember the exact timeline, but I think it's 5-10 years post-M9 in C3?). So, someone like Essek is probably still in Rexxentrum with Caleb, living a life of research. For that reason, I think of the Nein specifically, Essek/Caleb are one of the most likely connections that could be made. Much like Allura, Essek and Caleb are scholars and could actually be useful to Bells Hells, especially if they've continued their focus on dunamantic research. However, I think dunamancy will have to get a little more important in C3 for that to actually matter. The other M9 member I'd say is possible would be Beau, who is also a form of scholar. Fjord, Jester, Yasha, Caduceus, and Veth, I find harder to rationalize.
My problem with Essek/Caleb though is still that small-scale argument. Caleb is just some professor at the Soltryce Academy and Essek, I assume, has lost a lot of his (already precarious) Kryn Dynasty status, so they're not exactly... big names? Allura is a member of the Arcana Pansophical, she was a famous retired adventurer in her own right before she even met Vox Machina, which is why it's not crazy that the M9 stumbled onto her, especially considered how many fucking wizards the M9 knew.
My best guess for M9 connections to Bells Hells (not considering VM connections, which is a different, in my opinion more likely, bag entirely) would be: Yussa & the general Kryn Dynasty. My first guess of Yussa would be much for similar reasons as Allura, though Yussa is much more of a recluse, which makes it less likely they'd find him. But he is extremely intelligent and has a lot of useful information, so if somehow the Hells heard about him, they might seek him out. My other guess is building off the dunamancy connection you pointed out that maybe we won't get Essek specifically, but more generally members of the Kryn Dynasty we met in C2. Possibly the Bright Queen, or Skysybil Abrianna Mirimm (the goblin woman who was keeper of Beacon history). They're a lot higher status than Essek and would be easier to track down or even have heard about.
Though I know these boundaries can be crossed (Allura and the mirror-style), it's also very hard for me to see Bells Hells getting out of Marquet any time soon. They seem set in this continent for the foreseeable future, which makes it very hard to imagine how they're going to seek out or meet these Wildemount connections.

I know EXU Calamity is just that, an inevitable calamity. And I wanna see if a character was pushing for the calamity or if there was a character that is like "haha it's over I'm just gonna chill until it happens". But my little goblin brain wants someone to have survived and is just trapped in Aeor now. Or someone who is living as a hermit in Vasselheim. Or maybe someone who was already mentioned as surviving like Skysybil Abrianna Mirimm, Halas, Devexian, maybe Brashaar or even like Xalicas. I want a good balance of not part of the 1/3 and the lived to tell the tale. ᵃˡˢᵒ ⁱ ʷᵃⁿᵗ ˢᵒᵐᵉ ᵒᶠ ᵗʰᵃᵗ ᵗᵃˢᵗʸ ᵉᵛⁱˡ ᵃⁿᵈ ᵘⁿᶜᵃʳⁱⁿᵍ. I'm excited regardless, can you tell?

Communion and Correspondence
When the group wakes the following morning, Fei finds a letter from Question, promising to look further into the Jewel. Hi Fei! I’m going to go try to dig up some additional information about the Jewel of Three Prayers for you, I know a few arcanists in town who might have some books to lend. I’ll be in the tavern later, my usual spot. See you then, hopefully! Question
And before heading out to make inquiries, they also make sure to warn their other traveling companions not to take Aloysia’s offer since it’s rather suspicious.
The party then heads off to visit the Taskhand to ask him about potential maps of Betrayer’s Rise. In front of the barracks Theren runs across Amalyrr, a former fellow trainee and his ex, and they catch up while the rest of the group talks to the Taskhand. Verin agress to let them copy their maps and Unelias volunteers to spend their day on the task.
From there the rest of the group makes their way to the crumbling temple of the Changebringer. Only parts of the structure are still standing, the beautiful mosaic depicting the Lady Luck is in shards and the tree in the middle of the spiral-shaped building is withered. But there are potted plants from all kinds of places scattered throughout and tended by Fogholm, the Wildmother cleric in charge of the building.  Caddy discovers an offering altar and small prayer site with old and worn messages scribbled into the walls surrounding it. “Friends forever. Don’t——forget——”    “You owe me a drink in Marquet, A——”    “I am writing this——record of me stating——I will never, ever duel you again.”    “This——written proof——promise to show you the mountains of my home one day.”    “We love you. We will always be with you.” When she touches them, she feels a gentle welcoming sense of her home and the presence of the Changebringer.  And when she leaves an offering on the altar, she has a vision of Alyxian, praying here at the temple for guidance before the coming battle. In that vision the walls of the temple then disappear, revealing the night sky and the moons that begin to race across it in a rapid passage of time until an angry red sun is all that is visible. It’s then that 5 indistinct figures rejoin Alyxian, embrace him like a brother, and together they march off to war.
On the way back to the inn Theren exchanges his sword for a better one and Caddy buys some spell components.
Question is not at the inn when they arrive, and the group decides to wait for her a little bit before going looking, but then gets distracted by the arrival of Mizri, Theren’s cousin. She invites them to have dinner with her and a few other of Theren’s former friends. It’s a bit of a tense and awkward affair since Mizri seems to be the only one who is truly happy to see Theren, leaving him to look for emotional support from Fei.
In the meantime, Relic decides not to join the dinner and instead look for Question. Their inquiries lead them to the house of an old human arcanist who Quesion visited earlier today looking for information on the Jewel. While looking for a paper that might shed some light on Question’s inquiries, the arcanist babbles on about Torog’s and Asmodeus particular influence in the area and the repetition of the myth surrounding Alyxian who found a gift of the Changebringer here in Betrayer’s Rise - the Jewel - and used it to turn the tides of a major battle. But the book going into details on that is currently in Question’s possession. Then the scholar remembers something else, a message Question left for Fei as she was picked up by a woman dressed in red - don’t leave the tavern tonight.
Unfortunately, even with Relic now sprinting back to the tavern it is too late.  While doing her best to extricate Theren from the dinner with his former friends, Fei receives a letter delivered by an Aurora Watch soldier.  Miss Mirimm - We have your tiefling friend. If you would like to see her unharmed, let this gentleman escort you outside, alone. If your friends ask, tell them the Taskhand has asked to see you. Alert no one, or we will not guarantee her safety. She excuses herself under the stipulated pretense of having been summoned by the Taskhand and meets with Aloysia alone - who, not getting what she wanted, takes her hostage.
Relic now arrives at the inn, finding Fei already gone, and drags Theren, Caddy and Unelias off to find the Taskhand, and - so they hope - by extension Fei. But when they do find him it becomes clear that she is gone.

flirtynein and/or get that robo dick
aaah flirty Nein, my beloved this is inspired by @wtgw-fic‘s mushroom fic, which she talked about over here
It made me laugh way too much and I started that fanart months ago when the snippets for it were written
Tumblr media
as for the robo dick, that’s the ‘Essek falls in love with an automaton down the line’ fic that I’ve not touched in a whole while, but it’s set maybe a few hundred years after canon  Aifl folks provided the name Bob which made me snort hard enough that I went with it lmao
have some snippets from two unrelated scenes
“Fascinated by the technology and having access to an Aeormaton that was privy to information of how to build us, Ka'lith Mirimm had started to acquire components to build automatons for all sorts of purposes. By the time I was made, they had been building them for 13 decades. I am, through outstanding sourced materials, far more advanced than my predecessors."
Essek snorted and turned around to face Bob just to lift an eyebrow and look at them. "Well now we're just bragging, aren't we, my friend." A gentle laugh erupted from their body and once pleased, Essek leaned back into his previous space. "Continue," he prompted before Bob obliged with a hint of delight. "Yes. Now, this of course was quite an exposition to provide context. The rest I can show you from my cache of memory." (...) "I am your companion, you need not be shy in your desire."  Essek's breath caught as he heard them say those words, feeling a flush rise to his face at being so directly called out. Still he could only feel his desire for the automaton grow. Bit by bit, as they let their hands move on him, he gave in and closed his eyes, guiding one of the mechanical hands to the closure of his robes. "You are terribly accommodating, my friend. I do not wish to take advantage of anything you're not offering freely. If you want this, want me, you can go ahead." He could hear gentle noises from his companion as he moved, their hand then skillfully and easily opening up his robes despite the finicky small buttons. Essek's breath hitched once the warm fingers touched his skin directly. So different from human hands he was once so familiar with feeling, yet just as warm and pleasant in their gentle pressure.
