Explain Marianne

Marianne Sawyer is, as first presented, a mythic bitch. She started off as Ahi's childhood friend/bully (it's complicated) and ended up so much more.

The briefest summary I've got is that she was the sterotypical popular girl who didn't know how to handle caring about the one genuine friend she had- let alone losing that friend- and so she ramped up her mean girl status. And in her desperation she was strung along with promises of love and attention by someone who knew just how vulnerable she was. Miriam and the gang end up encountering her eventually and she ends up tagging along.

I'll toss the more detailed explaination under a read more.

So when I say "Childhood Friend" I truly mean it. Ahi's father was the mayor and Marianne's was the richest man in town, of course the pair went hand in hand. Even before he became mayor, David Ryan was charismatic and well connected, looked up to and respected. Nobody would ever suspect how he truly was beyond suspicions that he was simply power hungry.

Marianne and Ahi grew up together, they were the same age and for the most part they only really truly had each other. Ahi was the only person that Marianne could be open and honest around, the only person she could ever be vulnerable with.

But Marianne was also extremely popular while Ahi... wasn't. She wasn't unpopular persay, it was more that she was seen as an addition to Marianne. The mayor's "son" who she kept around to help her with homework and to do things for her. In front of her friend group and the rest of the school she treated Ahi as if she was simply a useful tool she kept around.

But alone, at the parties that rich people throw or sitting together in one of their rooms? Marianne was almost kind, and definitely sweet.

She fell for Ahi early on. She was expected to by her parents of course, but that's not the reason. It was because Ahi would stick by her even as she acted horribly, it was because Ahi would comfort her when they were alone, it was because Ahi was kind and understanding and actively stood up to her when she went too far. She was the force in her life that Marianne needed most.

But Ahi couldn't return those affections. First of all she still wasn't out and she didn't know if Marianne would ruin her life if she came out to her. She trusted her Annie, but not with this. Not since she saw how she could act towards other openly queer kids in their small town.

(This was in part internalized biphobia on Marianne's part, but also a desire to maintain her status in a largely conservative town. It was shitty of her regardless of the reasons, and that is Marianne at her core. Someone who was that kind of bully and as she grows and changes she learns that those she hurt don't owe her forgiveness.)

Despite being so close there's an understandable reason why Marianne didn't notice Ahi's abuse, because she was also a victim. As the popular girl she would go to a lot of parties, sleep around, smoke and drink. And at a high school party she really should not have been attending at age thirteen she met Sarah.

Sarah Michaelson was twenty two at the time (This is the bit where I say in advance that Miriam kills her, thank god) and started grooming Marianne. When she was fifteen Marianne was dating her brother, a boy her age, and Sarah finally started to make her move.

As the local dealer (the town's worst kept secret, with all the rich kids buying from her and nobody willing to do anything about it) she was able to convince Marianne to be the one to organise drugs for parties and such, convincing her to keep coming back to her. And when Marianne wasn't able to pay for the weed with her parents monitoring her finances... Sarah found other ways to take payment.

Once more, Marianne was fifteen.

Marianne always wanted to leave this small town. So when Sarah started crooning promises of going to hollywood and becoming a star, she started to believe it.

And then the fire happened.

She was the last person to talk to Ahi before she made her wish. She couldn't admit that she did like Ahi's project, especially with the centrepiece being a photo of Harper. And so she was the person who looked at an already defeated girl and in her jealousy stomped on the embers of her hopes.

She never expected it to cause an inferno.

The town believed that Ahi died in that fire, all rallying around the mayor in support of his tragic loss.

Marianne slipped out of town with Sarah the day after the funeral.

Her time in hollywood was an extension of her time back home, just another chance to play the popular girl. But her life was falling apart within months and one day she woke up and Sarah was simply gone.

Marianne was left adrift and alone until her shining light returned once more.

Miriam was in town for the usual- there are a lot of creeps to clear out in Hollywood after all. None of them were expecting Ahi to suddenly freeze up at seeing some pretty girl with blue hair. And they definitely weren't expecting the girl to recognise her in return.

The resulting "surprise! I'm alive and a magical girl now... emphasis on the 'girl now' part" conversation was difficult to say the least. Made worse by the fact that Marianne told Ahi about Sarah at last.

Ahi, who didn't remember her own trauma at the time, felt utterly terrible about not realising sooner- even though Marianne went to great lengths to keep this hidden.

At the end of the day Marianne is an interesting character. Initially I just made her to have a complicated history with Ahi- I didn't truly intend to make her a victim. But to be fair I didn't intend to do the same with Ahi either. Sometimes these things end up happening.

Complex is the best way I can describe her. Because she was shitty, she was unfair, and she was controlling. But she was also suffering under the expectations of everyone around her and she was being taken advantage of.

For the most part Marianne is a "better person" these days. She's still somewhat bitchy but it's settled into more teasing than cruel. She's opening up about the interests that are close to her heart and starting to have actual friends who care about her that aren't just Ahi. She's learning to move on and become her own person and not remain stuck in her high school mindset.

How you judge her is ultimately up to you. On my part I find her a fascinating character, flaws and tragic circumstances and all. She's complicated and will always remain complicated. And sometimes it's a lot of fun to play someone who's self centred.

(Especially since what truly got me attached to her wasn't even her canon self. It was from an AU in which the murder squad all grew up together. Marianne got a LOT of exploration and development that started there. But I felt it best to give a rundown of her canon self here.)

And thus we conclude yet another godawfully long write up on a Miriam Magica character.

This won't be the last one, I know that in my heart.

Oh and one more detail. Miriam's been suspecting that something was up with Ahi's past for a while but the magical file hasn't been helpful. Until Marianne mentions that Ahi's father always gave her the creeps and the file finally updates to simply state.

Something horrible happened.

And thus begins the trip back to their home town to figure out Ahi's past at long last.

MUN: G! To quote one of the submissions, because she’s iconic! G has jumped right in with characters to stir the pot, throw parties, and make their mark on Swynlake. We love having G and her characters around! CHARACTER: VIDIA! Vidia was highlighted for her fairy crown plot and how it’s involved pretty much all of our fairies and beyond! Qui una bio di Cristian: Cristian Guzzo (Torino 1971), è un ricercatore indipendente in Storia Medievale. Ha conseguito la maturità classica presso il liceo Zucchi di Monza nel 1990; si è laureato in legge presso

l’Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro, con una tesi in Storia del Diritto Italiano - avente quale relatore il chiarissimo prof. Antonio M. De Robertis- dal titolo La teoria della sovranità imperiale nell’età di Federico II. Dal 1998 è segretario e cofondatore, insieme al Dr. Giuseppe Maddalena Capiferro (già socio ordinario della Società di Storia Patria per la Puglia) dell’associazione Pavalon, Laboratorio di Studi templari per le province meridionali, che, fra il 1998 ed il 2001, si è fatta promotrice di tre convegni nazionali, dedicati alle vicende

dell’Ordine del Tempio, con particolare riferimento al Mezzogiorno d’Italia.

hiiiiiiiiiii~ (Introduction post)

My name is Libby but you can also call me Levy or Miriam. Anywhoozles, this is my account where I talk about the media that I consume. Off the top of my head, my main interests at this time are Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Serial Experiments Lain, Nichijou, Seinfeld, Soul Eater, and Steven Universe.

For the most part, though, I just like to latch onto a few characters and sink my claws into them for a little while before my brain moves onto new prey. One time I was watching Family Guy and I thought "gosh, Meg is so beautiful and sweet, it's pitiful how her family treats her" but then I stopped caring the next day. That is to say, my feelings for any particular character will probably only last for about four days at most (and sometimes I like a character outside of any media they've been in) but there are some characters I have enjoyed for far longer. Nichijou has its Yuuko, Soul Eater has its Crona, and Steven Universe has its mean girl flashback Pearl ...

I really like Nagatoro but in more of a "only my own AU version" sense and not the one in that god-awful show or the manga from whence it came. But that's a rant for another post.

I am very very picky about what makes a character desirable in the first place and I don't want my enjoyment of a character to be ruined by this awful little thing called canon so my idea of a character may depart widely from that which others might be accustomed to.

Similarly, the fan art I make comes from a place of wickedness and self indulgence. Or sometimes not. But usually yes.

Si narra che al tempo della creazione, quando arrivò il momento di creare i levrieri il buon Dio mise da parte l'argilla con la quale aveva creato il resto delle creature viventi e disegnò nel firmamento tre belle linee curve con la sua gran mano magica e mentre le disegnava diventarono luminose scie di stelle. La prima scia fu per la schiena, la testa piccola come una freccia e la coda lunga come il ricciolo di un nastro di seta nel vento. La seconda fu per la pancia snella e le zampe forti per correre tra le nuvole. E la terza fu per le zampe davanti, per percorrere una strada interminabile senza stancarsi mai. Quindi ordinò al vento di soffiare tra quelle scie di stelle per dar loro la vita. E fu così ché i levrieri si trasformarono nei figli del vento. Infine il buon Dio si fermò e sorrise: era tanto felice che volle che tutte le sue creature gioissero dell'armonia e della bontà dei levrieri. Fu così che regalò ad ogni levriero un'anima d'oro che portava la luce. Si dice che da quel giorno i levrieri rimasero sospesi tra il cielo e la terra, appoggiati sul vento e risplendenti di luce. Affection

I got reminded of a bit of a character study I did about Ahi. There's still lots of pieces missing from who she is, Marianne isn't mentioned for example, but it honestly covers more than I remember so I've decided to post it (also so Paci can add it to the Miriam Magica tag)

TW: child abuse, implied csa, parental neglect, and mentions of sex.

Ahi wasn't great with affection.

She can still remember the last time somebody hugged her, the year before she made her wish. The memory of Harper’s eyes full of tears as she wrapped her arms around her and held Ahi close was one she would never forget. And as Harper whispered promises and words of sorrowful goodbye, Ahi couldn’t help but cry too. But she still doesn’t know if it was due to the fact she was losing the kindest person she'd ever known or if it was the simple sensation of being held close by another that had threatened to break her.

The time before that was almost ten years ago. And it was also Harper.

She stopped trying after Harper left her life.

We just aren’t a ‘touchy’ family. You’re too clingy Aiden, let go of my shirt. You know how your mother is. You’ll grow out of this one day. You need to stop being so sensitive. Boys don’t get hugs. Arms down Aiden.

She stopped trying before Harper entered it in the first place.

What is it like, for a child to fear and yet crave their parents touch? There were times that Ahi got what she wanted. Times that her parents would ghost a hand onto her shoulder for a moment in recognition of work hard done. Of grades and success and of achievement. There were times that her father held a belt. There were worse times, but she can never quite remember those. Not beyond the vague fear that gnaws at her heart when her father's hand settles on a doorknob. Any time that fear starts to take hold she finds herself losing track of time. Maybe that's why her memory is always so scattered.

Ahi used to wish she had siblings. Now she's grateful she doesn’t, if only for the fact that they are safe.

She’s eight when Harper leaves the first time, a single glimpse of a child pressed up against a car window in a desperate attempt to say goodbye to her best friend in the entire world haunts her for years to come. Ahi wasn’t supposed to be near the window to watch her leave. Ahi isn’t supposed to think about her at all. Not about the girl who almost “turned our precious Aiden into a deviant freak.” Of course, her parents never said that. They thought it though. That much was clear in each and every day they looked at her and tried to remind her of more “masculine” things to do.

Catholic schools are surprisingly known for their sports teams and Ahi is made to try out each and every one of them. She likes water polo the most. There’s freedom in moving in the water, there’s a feeling of connection as it pushes down on her and she doesn’t feel so alone, there’s a feeling to being hit in the face by a ball and thinking you did a good job because at least it didn’t get into the goal. At least people are smiling at you. She’s eleven years old and the ocean feels like a home to her. She almost drowns twice, yet it’s safer then her home has ever been.

It’s not until much later that she realises the importance of the water. And she never once fears it, despite what her parents try to tell her. Nothing can stop the ocean from flowing through her veins. But that’s a story for later.

Where were we? Ah, connection, yes. Let’s tick back to when she first meets Harper.

The internet is a marvellous thing. She’s exposed to it young, not as young as most but still young. She gets a new teacher- a nice man, a kind man- and he understands when Ahi struggles with her classwork. He takes her aside and actively runs her through the steps in a way she understands, in a way that finally works for her. Without his help she would have collapsed under the weight of her school work years earlier than she did. And so is it any reason that she cannot help but admire him for the rest of her life. He IS a good man, unlike another she knows.

He brings computers, his own, to school. He gets known as the cool teacher, and he institutes a tradition. Usually students get to relax for the final day of the year. In his class? They relax for the final three. It’s some of the most fun she ever has in school.

There’s a girl in the class, one who moved in beside her a few months ago but she wouldn’t be allowed to actually befriend until this school year takes place. Her name is Harper. She is utterly brilliant. Not in a school sense, no she struggles so much more than Ahi does. (Ahi cannot help but see it like that. How can she be struggling too when her grades are better than Harpers are) But she’s kind and sweet and she knows people in a way Ahi never understood.

The class has a simple project, to set up an online blog. Ahi, who isn’t allowed on a computer at home (for good reason, her parents wouldn’t check what she was doing at all if they had) tries her utmost during class time to make it perfect.

She does a good job for a kid her age. Good enough to go on a small trip to present a conference to a group of tech illiterate teachers about online education, hand in hand with Harper. Her teacher smiling approvingly at them while Ahi’s parents stay back in their hotel room.

She never actually learns about internet safety. She’s too busy trying to do a good job on her project to listen to the words of warning from her kindly teacher. She regrets that.

She goes through so much more as she grows up. The struggles of being a closeted transgender kid aren’t all that uncommon, and Catholic school is hell. But she makes it… or rather she struggles through until the school is in ashes and she is standing over them victorious with a fire in her eyes unlike anything she’s ever felt before.

There’s one thing to mention though, at risk of dragging this out further. There’s a single shining light.

There’s family.

She meets her grandfather four months before she becomes the inferno that burns away her world. She's still utterly despondent from losing Harper a second time and she doesn’t process much of anything until she steps foot at home for the first time in her life.

The feeling of stepping into the native forests, listening to her grandfather explain about the wildlife and the plants, Ahi comes alive again. Swimming in the ocean, sitting on the beach, Ahi starts to live again. When her grandfather places a firm hand on her shoulder, something she can still feel today when she thinks on the memory, and offers her a gift. She finally starts to becomes herself.

Ahi had a fascination with fire already. But she didn’t have a name. But with her pounamu- a precious gift of carved greenstone hung around her neck- she has a grounding point, and she does some research in secret. She spends her time learning and listening. She studies her heritage, her language, and she learns what fire means. Aiden becomes Ahi. And her life begins in the ashes as the phoenix leaves her hometown.

She meets Ramriel and Miriam. Moss is important too, finally she has the sibling she's always wanted, one of Ahi’s closest connections to her own humanity. She cherishes them every day of her life, but right now the focus isn’t about familial love- though reclaiming what her parents tried to destroy in her is important, that isn’t a part of our current narrative, that’s for another time.

This is love, romantic and queerplatonic, and two people Ahi could never live without. She remembers leaning against that car’s hood as Miriam and Ramriel interrogate her. She remembers how despite the barrier around her she felt less trapped than she had for years now. She remembers them. There’s more encounters, more moments. Ahi falls head over heels.

It’s a week after she joins their little duo turned trio that she falls for Ramriel. They lean against her absentmindedly as they try and reach the remote in one of the motels they’re staying in (Ahi is reading at the time) and the contact is electric. Gone is the anxiety in her veins and in it’s place is a world shattering feeling. Ram smiles at her when she fumbles with the book and slides the remote into their hand. Ahi doesn’t sleep that night.

Miriam is a bit later. Or earlier. Ahi crushes on them almost immediately because of her absolutely awesome aesthetic and the strength in how she conducts herself. But when did that feeling become full blown attraction? And for that matter, what IS attraction?

Ahi is sure that she finds Miriam hot. Ram too- that messy hair and smile and those fangs- but that’s besides the point. She knows that she admires Miriam’s muscles as they work on Noose, she knows she admires the ferocity in which she goes about her work, she knows how much she adores Miriam's voice. She thinks of spending time with them and just hearing Miriam talk about what they did that day, what music they like, or god just anything and everything. Ahi finds herself wanting to know all that Miriam would tell her, unaware of how her own profile unfolds before Miriam’s very eyes.

The fact she is besotted with Miriam likely appears in their mental file early on. On her worse days Ahi secretly thinks it’s a miracle she wasn’t cast out of the group because of it.

She doesn’t ask for hugs. She doesn’t know how. But she lays awake at night and thinks of the feeling of Miriam’s fingers brushing her own as she handed over a Grief Seed, of Ram’s head on her shoulder (she’d almost forgotten how to breathe when that happened), of Moss braiding her hair (she actually had stopped breathing during that one). She’s sure she is in love. She’s sure she’ll rot in it.

Miriam hunts her. Miriam kisses her. Ahi kisses back.

She’s still not sure how attraction works, still not sure about so many things. She’s so confused with thoughts of claws and being pushed back against a wall and of blood. So much blood. Ahi never quite gets attraction. When she thinks of Miriam she doesn’t default to sharp teeth against her collarbone or rough lips against her own, though it does haunt her thoughts. She defaults to the warmth of Miriam’s smile and to the feeling of their hands touching as she handed tools to her as she worked on Noose.

But that’s okay. That’s how she is. She often doesn’t quite remember sex is a thing people can actually do, and she frets about overstepping with Miriam when she does remember. But she works on it.

Miriam telling her that she likes to be told when she’s wanted helps immensely. Ahi still feels like a predator, a monster, asking for even a hug at first, but it lessens each time that Miriam’s tail wags. She asks for kisses more and more, guilt lessening with each time those lips do press to her own. She’s okay, it’s okay. They’re all okay. Apart from the murder and arson and self sacrificial witch hunting but like, otherwise? They’re all improving, especially Ahi.

Each day Ahi gets better at communicating her wants and needs. She bumps up against boundaries and makes mistakes and learns what to do and what not to do. She’s not alone anymore. She has help, has people who love her. Maybe that's all she needed after all.
