The Good News Is
Clara and I run Minecraft on our home FreeBSD server in a jail, which keeps Java and other dependencies contained in a single location. Although I have not tested it, the theory is that you can run the server wherever Java is supported, which includes Linux or NetBSD. bankadda
Well, I decided I couldn't leave it at that! The good news is, you can indeed run a Minecraft server on the OS I love as well. This is the method I used. I'm sure there are other ways.
Getting Java installed
After you have installed NetBSD, set up networks and enabled pkgin. You will require an OpenJDK installation in order to run Minecraft.
Minecraft 1.17 onwards requires OpenJDK 17 however, OpenJDK 16 is the most up-to-date version in the most recent snapshot as of July 2022. You can check to see if this is still the case:
If it's 16 or older You can pull the most recent packages by opening your repo file:
and changing the repo URI, in my instance, from 9.0 to 9.0_current:
This was a great project. He has done a lot of great work for the NetBSD community, and I feel like I owe him at least some coffee or a beer the next time I'm fortunate enough to go to Japan.
We are now able to install along with other useful tools.
Running Minecraft
This location is a good one to run Minecraft as a Java-enabled server. I put all my files together:
Log in as my local user to begin:
Now we can start!
You'll notice that Java will throw a system not supported exception that we on NetBSD know well. Based on my tests, you can safely ignore it:
Don't forget to sign the EULA after you run the server the first time:
Making an introductory script
I like to sync the most recent version of the server to minecraft.jar:
Then, you can reference it in launch.sh with tmux in order to save the server after disconnecting. I like to give Minecraft more memory as well:
We're now ready to go!
Follow-up
The next step is to build a proper Chroot environment that can support Java and Minecraft. This is similar to the FreeBSD jails. I've had a solid NetBSD exploration of chroots that I've been working on for a while; I'll tidy up and publish it shortly.

Once You've Installed NetBSD
Clara and I run Minecraft on our home FreeBSD server that is located in a jail that keeps Java and other dependencies in one place. Although I haven’t tested it, the idea is that it is possible to run the server wherever Java supports, which includes Linux, NetBSD and possibly other operating systems.
So, I could not let it go! The good news is that you can also run a Minecraft server on another preferred OS. This is how I did it. I'm sure there are more.
Getting Java installed
Once you've installed NetBSD and configured networking and enabled pkgin, you'll must install an OpenJDK to run Minecraft. Info
OpenJDK 17 is required for Minecraft 1.17 and later. OpenJDK 16 however, is the most current snapshot as of July 20,22. You can search to confirm that this is still the situation:
If it's still 16, you can pull current packages by opening your repo file:
Then changing the repo URL I changed mine from 9.0 to 9.0_current
This was a wonderful project. He has done a lot of great work for the NetBSD community. I feel like I owe him at least some coffee or a beer next time I'm able to travel to Japan.
We are now able to install, along with some other useful tools.
Running Minecraft
From here it is possible to run Minecraft is similar to any other Java-enabled server. I have all my files in one place:
Then log in as my local user and begin:
Now we can start!
Java will throw an exception regarding a system that is not supported, something that NetBSD users know well. It's safe to ignore from my experience.
Don't forget to sign the EULA when you launch the server for the first time:
Create a launch script
I like to symlink to minecraft.jar the most recent version of the server
You can then reference it in launch.sh using tmux for the server to remain active after disconnecting. I like to give Minecraft more memory, too:
We're now ready to go!
Follow-up
My next step would be creating an appropriate chroot environment for Java and Minecraft like what I do with FreeBSD jails. I've had a complete NetBSD exploration of chroots in the works for a long time but I'll get it cleaned up and make it available soon.

The Good News Is
Clara and I run Minecraft on our home FreeBSD server that is located in a jail, which keeps Java and other dependencies in a single location. Letrastra Ducidas Theoretically you can run the server from any device that supports Java and Java-related software, including Linux and possibly NetBSD, though I haven't tested the latter.
Well, I decided I couldn't leave it at that! The good news is, you can actually run an Minecraft server on the OS I love too. This article explains the method I used but I'm certain there are other methods.
Getting Java installed
After you have installed NetBSD and set up networks and enabled pkgin. You will require an OpenJDK installation to play Minecraft.
OpenJDK 17 is required for Minecraft 1.17 and later. OpenJDK 16 however, is the latest snapshot as of July 2022. To confirm, search:
If it's 16 or older You can pull the most recent packages by opening your repo file:
Change the repo URL, in my case from 9.0 to 9.0_current:
This was a fantastic project. He is a huge advocate for NetBSD I feel that I owe him at least the possibility of a cup of coffee or a glass of beer each time I go to Japan.
Now we can put it in, along with other useful tools:
Running Minecraft
This location can be used to run Minecraft as a Java-enabled server. I have all my files in one place:
Then log into my local account and then start:
We're ready to start!
You'll notice that Java will throw a system not supported exception which we who run NetBSD are all too familiar with. It is safe to ignore from my experience.
Don't forget to sign the EULA after you run the server the first time:
The creation of a launch script
I like to sync the most current version of the server to minecraft.jar:
You can reference it in launch.sh using tmux for the server to stay in place after disconnecting. I like to give Minecraft more memory as well:
We're ready to go!
Follow-up
The next step is to create a chroot environment that supports Java and Minecraft. This is similar to the FreeBSD jails. I have a NetBSD chroot exploration guide in the works for many years. I'll tidy it up and release it in the near future.

This is a Minecraft Screenshot
Yes the image you see above is of a map that was created in Minecraft. It's part of a 16-kilometer-wide realistic terrain project that gives you an array of topography to you to build your own on. It's a stunning collection deserts, mountains, swamps, and forests that you can download and use as a background for your own Minecraft constructions.
This map is called Kythor and was designed by qwryzu using World Machine and World Painter. Minecraft server list It took about two months to finish. "I intentionally made this map with huge open spaces for building," qwryzu says, "specifically using mods (shoutout Immersive Railroading gang). It is not the most detail-rich map I've ever made, as I hope it will serve as an ideal background for large-scale constructions."
You can download the map for yourself on Planet Minecraft. It is available for Java Edition and, although it was designed in 1.12.2 it is compatible with any current version. However, qwryzu isn't sure if the changes in the world's height in 1.17 could cause issues.
Seriously, though, just look at this thing.
After two months of intense work, qwryzu created their most detailed map with 4 vast continents, including deserts, lakes, mountains and more. They purposefully made this map with big open spaces for building #Minecraft #TerrainTuesday FREE download below!
