klaus brings dave back to 2019 where he slowly sinks into a depression because of the people he's lost and because of how much the world has changed. he drags himself out of it, because damn if he isn't one stubborn son of a bitch who never backed down from a fight in his life.
so dave is eager and curious to learn about how the world is now, and how he can find his place in it. he becomes a history teacher, and puts his focus out of school on reading and learning. he's confused with students using computers and tablets to take notes, and is the only teacher that still hands out assignments on paper. he gets up early every morning to go for a run or to the gym, and drinks way more coffee than is healthy. klaus teaches him that he can use his phone to listen to music when he goes running, but he doesn't like it because the sounds keeps him grounded.
every sunday he goes to temple, and he becomes a counselor in a local lgbt youth group. the kids loves him, but caringly calls him grandpa because he's so old fashioned. he gets tattoo sleeves and dives into glam rock which he really enjoys. he's still confused about the whole thing with more than gay or straight, and men or women, but he's supportive and listens when the kids in the group tells him about it. he also thinks it makes sense that klaus doesn't fit into any of those categories.
dave wants to learn everything he has missed in the gap between his former life and his current life, but sometimes he gets overwhelmed by information so he retreats to listen to 50s/60s vinyls and read books he grew up with.
but even when dave feels like his head is gonna explode from not feeling like he belongs in this time, klaus makes him feel like he is right where he is supposed to be. because klaus is the same that he remembers. klaus who dances like he doesn't know how tall and skinny he is, klaus who knows more swear words - and in more languages - than any soldier dave has ever known. klaus who always has a witty response to anything, klaus who steals the covers at night and talks in his sleep, and sometimes smacks dave in his sleep because he's a restless dreamer. klaus who is more vulnerable than he wants to admit, and who hugs dave warmer than anyone ever has.
and he loves the kids of the youth group who thinks it's hilarious that he had never before played video games, and who wonders how proper and clean-cut dave ended up with freaky klaus. the kids who plays a game of "let's see if dave knows this" and plays him music and shows him videos that seems obscure but apparently are normal now. the kids who comes to him when they have amazing news, or comes to him when their world is falling apart.
and if anyone had ever told dave when he was younger that he would once share his bed with a boyfriend, or that he would live a day where he could kiss his boyfriend in the middle of the frozen foods aisle of the supermarket, or that he would join a family where everyone has strange powers, but also are made up of both white people and people of color who eat at the same table and consider each other brothers and sisters - he would never have believed it.
and for that, it is all worth to feel a little lost in this odd age, dave thinks.

you just fucking know that dave who is huge, dave who has rock hard abs and biceps the size of klaus' head, dave who probably sprints the fastest in the company and who has beaten every other soldier in arm wrestling, dave who is the best with a rifle and hand-to-hand combat, you just fucking know that he is also a damn sappy romantic. a product of being a teenager in the 50s.
big ass beefcake dave is the softest boy who would purposely fall behind the unit to pick a flower that he could slip into klaus' hand when no one else would see. he would most definitely write poems that he would add to the letters he would sneak into klaus' pack before bed. he probably spent his whole life dreaming that he could have a wedding, and a marriage with a white picket fence, a dog, a ford and a couple kids, but he knew he could never have it with someone he loved. soldier boy dave would probably squeeze klaus tight when they snuck off to make love in the dead of night, and he would kiss klaus' nose and tell him his eyes are beautiful. dave is a sap soft romantic, and not a single person can convince me otherwise.

ok i cant fall asleep so i'm gonna add onto the other post i made the other night about dave being a hardcore romantic.
fucking pure muscle dave sure as hell always holds the door for klaus. he pulls the chair out for him, and gives him his jacket when it's cold. he buys him flowers, and wants to slow dance to vinyls in the middle of the night. soft at heart dave brushes klaus' hair out of his face and tells him he has beautiful eyes. he always asks if klaus wants to before just actively trying to get klaus in the mood for sex. he makes sure to always kiss klaus goodnight, and when klaus falls asleep on the couch in the middle of the afternoon dave puts a blanket over him so he won't get cold. dave leaves small notes around the house for klaus to find when he's not home so klaus will be reminded that he's loved even if dave isn't around to tell him. he always makes sure to tell klaus that he looks pretty, and he asks - and genuinely wants to know - how klaus is doing. and gentle, loving dave loves hugs and cuddling, and he loves how his face fits perfectly in the hollow point between klaus jaw and shoulder. and he loves it when klaus falls sleep with his head in his lap when they've been watching tv, and he always tries to carry him to bed but klaus wakes up way too easily. and the last thing dave says before going to sleep every night is that he's so happy they found a way to be together, and even though he knows klaus doesn't believe in god, dave thanks the higher powers every day for having pulled strings to make these two lives intertwine when it should have been impossible. dave just love love, and he loves klaus.

ok so i was standing in the middle of the fresh produce section of the store when i got to think about klaus going back in time to get dave, but the handler stops him because he can't change that timeline but instead she offers him another timeline. so klaus has to go back to 1970 in a timeline where dave wasn't killed in vietnam but when his time was served he went back to the us to reunite with his family and marry the girl he had left behind. so klaus has to blend into 70s us of all the prejudice and watch dave being so deep in the closet that he has a sweet young wife with farrah fawcett hair and a loving gaze whenever she looks at dave, because who the fuck wouldn't? and klaus has to watch dave wear a wedding band and look at this intelligent and strong woman with adoration, but it's not the love that he has reserved for klaus.
and dave is shocked to see klaus because he never thought he would see this strange and funny guy again. there is that love in his eyes, only reserved for klaus, and as he introduces klaus to his wife (klaus heart is breaking in his chest by the mere word) he can see in her face that she knows. but she isn't mad and she isn't upset, she is just incredibly sad. yet she still invites klaus into her home - their home - and convinces him to stay for the weekend, even if klaus for the first declines an offer of a warm bed and three meals a day. klaus can easily sleep on a bench in the park or in a dumpster in an ally, and he would much rather do that than lie in a bed with fresh cotton linens and know that dave is in bed with someone else a couple doors down the hall. but dave gives him that look that always works, that damn look that makes klaus positively melt on the inside, and he would walk on fire for that man, so he caves.
and klaus can't sleep, and he twists and turns, and he is craving a pill - any fucking pill will do - but where does a guy go to get drugs in midwest suburbia in the 70s? so he stays put, opens a window, paces the floor, and ignores the spirits screaming at him. he tries to meditate as he was taught in rehab, he flips through the books on the neat shelf in the guest room but all he can think about his how the hell is he supposed to take a man away from this perfect life and drag him back to the mess that is klaus' reality? five warned him not to accept a deal with the handler, but he didn't believe that anything could be as torturous as knowing that he would never see dave again.
and the door opens and soft streak of light streams in, bathing dave in an angelic glow, smiling wide as the way klaus best remembers him. it is taking everything in klaus to not jump right into his arms, or break down right there in the dark room, as dave steps inside and closes the door behind him. tears brimming his eyes makes klaus look away, but dave's big hands softly leads his chin back to make their eyes meet.
"i missed you. i can't believe you're here," dave whispers and run his fingers through klaus' curls as he used to, and klaus is weak in the knees that can barely hold him up any longer.
"i shouldn't have come," he mutters, trying to look away, but dave's gaze is hypnotizing, and he has missed those eyes for far too long. "you're happy, and you should be."
"i'm content. i've got a good life. but there's a difference between happiness and happiness," dave says, and his hands are running down klaus' naked back. and it's odd, because it feels like dave's hands, but they're soft unlike the rough and calloused palms that touched klaus back in vietnam.
and their faces are now so close that klaus can feel the heat from dave's body, and all he can think about his all the times he has claimed that body as his own, all the secret nights of sweaty skin against skin, and hearts racing in the depths of the jungle hidden by trees and the sounds of the war.
"klaus..." dave says, honey dripping off his voice as always, making klaus throat tie up because he has to restrain himself in a way he has never needed before. this thing with caring about people's lives and feelings and having to think and consider before making hasty decision is exhausting, but no matter how much klaus just wants to throw dave on the bed he can't with his wife right down the hall, and no matter how much klaus wants to beg dave to run away with him he can't knowing that dave has a life, a family and most important of all; he's safe. a safety he would never be guaranteed should he come with klaus.
"i think she already knows," dave then says, words spoken with great agony, and now it's dave looking away. it's shameful, and klaus knows that he feels guilty. because that is who dave is.
"she loves you," klaus says with a nod, and allows his hands to find dave's hips. "do you?" dave asks, and for the first time since he left home klaus laughs. he rolls his eyes and clasps his hands to dave's face, making dave look at him.
"do i love you? do you think i would be here if i didn't? you know, where i come from they all wanna tap this," klaus jokes, and dave laughs with him. a weak laugh, but a laugh regardless.
and then klaus feels that dave's lips move the same against his own, but those too are softer than he remembers. no chapped lips from dehydration, and no picking because of nerves. but the way they move with klaus' is like they fall right back into a choreography they had long forgotten.
so klaus' fingers dig into dave's back, and dave's fingers are tangled up in klaus' curls as they both try to make up for lost time, and klaus can feel dave's tears on his face, so he kisses him stronger, harder, as if to convince him that it's not a dream, but he is really there. and it's getting hard to breathe, but it's all worth it because klaus can't possibly bring himself to ask dave to come with him back. dave doesn't even know where 'back' is, and it's an unfair position to put him in. but every cell of klaus' heart is screaming to just get out the damn suitcase and make the trip before dave even knows what's happening. just like the fire in klaus' blood is making his dick hard and he's frantic to feel every inch of dave against every inch of himself.
"i wanna go with you," dave breathes against klaus' lips, foreheads resting together as they come up for air. "but i have people relying on me here."
"i can't ask you to quit your whole life," klaus forced himself to say.
"i would. for you."
"then come with me." and klaus didn't even know the words were coming before he heard himself say them, and he wants to regret them but he can't. he just can't.

i know i rant about klaus and dave a lot, but i have more to say okokok.
listen, something i think makes their story even more soft and beautiful is that the writers could have made it an enemies to lovers kind of thing. they could have made dave a cranky, angry, jaded bitch of an army superior whipping klaus' ass because he had no training, no knowledge of guns, no uniform, not even a pair of boots and a helmet. they could have made dave a menacing, stereotypical yelling and swearing and toxic male asshole making life miserable for klaus until something happened that brought them together. and it would have made sense for klaus to not trust dave, because since he was born his experiences has shown him that he can't trust anyone, so they could have made klaus be a cynical, cold snark towards dave.
but they didn't. instead dave was soft and kind and gentle and caring from the moment he put his eyes on klaus. his voice on the bus is so careful and encouraging, and the way he cups klaus' face in the bar before they kiss is so tender and you can see klaus is right about ready to break because no one has ever touched him with such a delicate caress before in his entire life. from the moment those two met their love was soft, and they both deserved that. and i am so happy that was the story they got.
now give me fucking more of this soft story in s2 or i will kill someone

oh boy do i love you @cruisinwritealong ima just make a separate post cause i'm a neat freak like that
so listen, there is no way i could ever compile every single dave with or without klaus headcanon into one post because i think about this a lot. i do have an extended headcanon about dave's family's background and how they came to america but that is for a big separate post. lemme just give you some highlights here:
dave grew up in the 40s/50s so he was raised in an extremely toxic masculine environment but there were a lot of women in his life like his mom, and aunt, and sisters that allowed him to be soft and kind whenever men weren't around
he loves to read and takes every opportunity he can to do it. he's curious and was planning on going to college but when the war happened he had to set his plans aside
he was born in 1938 so when his family had to flee from europe he was around five and still remembers the way they had to sneak from the nazis in the middle of the night
he and klaus wrote letters to each other and snuck them into each other's pockets, packs, wherever they could, and it became a game of who could be the most daring about it without getting caught
dave pretended to be straight his whole life, as was the norm back then. he had a girlfriend all through high school, and everyone were sure they were gonna get married. when dave was drafted he was relieved because it would give him time to breathe before having to be hiding for the rest of his life
dave took his faith very serious. a lot of the other kids when he was in school were annoyed about being dragged to church or temple by their parents, but to dave going to temple was one of the most calm and peaceful times of the week
his first kiss with a boy was when he was in training. it was another soldier that he was laundry duty with. they had been flirting for weeks and when they were finally alone in the dark laundry room that was hot and smelled like detergent they couldn't fight the sparks anymore. dave was 19 and he had never felt that way before in his life
he worked on cars with his dad when he was growing up, so he's an amazing mechanic, and it really helped him during his training. his technical skills gave him the fastest assemble and disassemble time in his company
as a kid he loved being in the kitchen with his mom and it has made him a great cook
he had a lot of plans for when he got home. he wanted to go to college and study history, maybe become a teacher. he wanted a house with a dog and a cat, and he wanted to write a novel, and he wanted to travel; see europe again, go to israel and feel his roots
dave's sexuality was a heavy burden for him, and he wished it away every day his entire life. even when he met klaus and realized the feelings he was developing he kept wishing it away, but the more he got to know klaus the more he was fighting himself; when they shared their first kiss dave told himself that if he didn't have these feelings he would never have gotten to share that moment with this strange and wonderful boy

okay, so, for the headcanon thing and because i'm too lazy to write this myself, BUT, consider: they get dave to the modern timeline through Plot Convenience, and he and Klaus attend pride, which is simply Mindblowing to Dave, this sweet guy coming from such a place of social prejudice and homophobia, who's seeing all this overwhelming positivity and support and love out there in public in all its colours, and is just... shocked. essentially, dave crying from joy & holding klaus' hands a lot
i am so sorry this took me a while to get to, but i think about this scenario a lot, and i have to put this under a cut because it turned into 1.3k words of dave experiencing a whole new world.
okay i know that i am completelyminority here, but i don't feel like klaus is the kind of guy whoneeds to flaunt his sexuality. tbh i don't even think he even thinksabout it. i think he mostly just gets with whoever he is attracted to(or can offer him a warm bed or a couch for some time) regardless ofgender. so to me klaus doesn't go to pride for the community, or forthe social aspect. whenever klaus has gone to pride it has been tofill his needs for alcohol, drugs, sex and because pride is fuckingloud.
but then dave is there in the moderntimeline with him, and even though klaus is like ”this is dave,he's my guy, we're a thing, you shut up” to his siblings, dave isstill closeted. dave has been closeted his whole life because heliterally didn't have a choice. and the changes from his timeline toklaus' are an extreme culture shock. klaus' wardrobe alone is enoughto make him need a stiff drink and a moment to clear his head. davewasn't exactly a hippie back in the sixties, and he never really hadmuch to do with them back then. and it's confusing, and he is havinga really hard time. and klaus isn't the most evolved when it comes totalking about feelings, because who the hell would have taught himthat? old reggie? i think not! he's done it in rehab, and grouptherapy in prison, but he always followed up with sarcastic remarks, and he is not about to do that to dave. so instead klaus sits withhim, tells him he doesn't have to be out until he feels like it'sright, and that it all comes down what dave needs. but he also tellsdave about all the good progress the lgbt community has seen sincethe 60s. and then he tells dave about pride – how we have an entiremonth to raise awareness and remember our history. he tells daveabout how pride is a place where nobody cares, where everyone ishappy, and even closeted people get to be themselves for at least acouple of hours because at pride eveeryone is themselves. and klausshows dave pictures and videos from pride, videos of drag queensperforming, and boys kissing boys, and girls kissing girls. picturesof colorful floats and huge, hairy guys in thongs and colorful boasaround their necks.
so they decide to go. dave hesitant, and klaus promises that they don't have to do anything, they can justwatch from the sidelines. klaus even wears pants and a full lengtht-shirt with sleeves and everything to make dave feel as neutral aspossible as they're on the bus to the nearest big city where thefestivities are going down.
and when they arrive it's big, andpompous, and it's colorful. and it's so happy! the energy is booming, and there are so many smiles. big men are making out, unashamed, inthe middle of the city square. women with buzzcuts are holding handsand looking each other in the eyes like they're seeing the sun forthe first time. drag queens taller than dave are dancing in thehighest heels he has ever seen, and teenagers whose genders davecan't even figure out are laughing so hard they can barely stand.there are so many people, and literally every one of them is lookinghappy, and content, and excited.
the air is exploding with love, and forthe first time in the entire time they have known each other, klausfeels dave carefully lace their fingers together in front of otherpeople. and he can't stop grinning, and he so want a drink right now,but he also wants to keep his head clear in case dave getsoverwhelmed. but as a float marked gay soldiers do it better filledwith ripped guys in army pants passed them, dave inches closer tohim, and when klaus looks at him he sees tears in his boyfriend'seyes. so klaus squeezes his hand and dares to move closer.
”everyone is just so happy. andopen,” dave says, but he can't pull his eyes away, and klaus isn'tabout to be the one to break the spell for him. so instead he juststands there, letting dave digest it all, take it all in as much ashe can handle. klaus never considered himself closeted, and he neverfelt like he had to come out to anyone either. it wasn't like hisfamily even cared whether he was alive or dead, so why should hebother to feel like he owed them that part of himself? but it was abig deal to dave, and klaus was not about to take that away from him.
so they spend the whole day in the citysquare. klaus meets former drinking buddies and people he used to domolly with. he meets at least eight different people he has sleptwith, and dave is overwhelmed by how klaus isn't gay or straight butsomething entirely different. but dave is polite and greets everyone, even if he doesn't like the idea of anyone else having ever touchedklaus the way he gets to. he watches klaus dance with other people, and listens to him have conversations that he knows are in englishbut doesn't make the tiniest bit of sense to him. but he doesn'tmind; dave enjoys seeing klaus having a good time, and he likes to beon the sideline to observe without having to put himself in themiddle of it, and he tries not to blush whenever klaus proudlyintroduces him to whoever comes their way, or whenever other mencalls him cute in front of other men. so he holds klaus' hand, andevery time klaus has been wandering off and comes back, he pullsklaus just a little bit closer than he previously has allowed himselfin public.
and they stay the whole day, over theevening, and even though dave's head is pounding from all the loudmusic and the sun baking down on them for hours, he wouldn't want itany other way. his heart has been feeling like it was going to poundright out of his chest the entire day, and he has been scared todeath since before they even left the house, but now that it's darkand the music is transitioning to slower beats, there's no place davewould rather be.
slowly he gathers up his courage to lethis arms wrap around klaus, even though they are surrounded bystrangers. but everyone seems focused on their own moment, and withcouples dancing around them dave tells himself that this is as good amoment as any, and with klaus' arms softly around him he starts tosway, letting them blend in with the other couples moving to the softtunes. and when klaus rest his cheek on his shoulder, dave's stomachdoes a small jump, but he doesn't fight it, and allows his own torest against klaus' messy curls as they are swaying in place.
it's terrifying, and dave is constantlyexpecting someone to come attack them, but then he watches the othercouples around them, and reminds himself to breathe. so he squeezesklaus tighter and takes his hand, dancing like the slow dances he didwith girls in high school, where he used to close his eyes andimagine it was a cute boy, but he never would have imagined that hewould actually get to have a dance like that with someone thatactually made his heart flutter like klaus does. but here he is;fireworks popping over their heads, and a sweet pop song playing overthe biggest speakers he has seen in his life. and he's with klaus. sonothing else matters.
