Dantiel W. Moniz is the recipient of the Alice Hoffman Prize for Fiction, the Cecelia Joyce Johnson Emerging Writer Award by the Key West Literary Seminars, and a Tin House Scholarship. Her fiction has appeared or is forthcoming in the Paris Review, Tin House, Ploughshares, the Yale Review, Joyland, McSweeney's Quarterly Concern, and elsewhere. Milk Blood Heat is her first book. She lives in Northeast Florida.

Where are you writing to us from?

Jacksonville, FL

What’s kept you sane during the pandemic?

Roller skating; re-watching atmospheric TV Series like Mad Men and Sharp Objects; my husband (IRL) and friends (virtually).

What are 3 books you always recommend to people?

I don’t have a specific three, it’s always changing. Right now: We the Animals by Justin Torres, Luster by Raven Leilani, and Severance by Ling Ma.

Which writers, artists, and others influence your work in general, and this book, specifically?

In general: Janet Fitch, Alice Walker, Zora Neale Hurston, Sally Mann. For this collection: Antonya Nelson, Jeffrey Eugenides, Julie Orringer, Amy Bloom.

If you opened a bookstore, where would it be located, what would it be called, and what would your bestseller be?

Definitely Jacksonville, because we don’t have enough. And names! I’m so bad at it. Maybe The Hot Ticket, but we’d run the A/C all day long. We’d have a special section for homegrown authors and Deesha Philyaw and Dawnie Walton would be front and center.

Hello everyone and happy Friday to you all! Today we’re off for another stop on my bookshelf tour. My books are stored alphabetically and this shelf has the last of the authors surnames beginning with M and I’ve started with N. All these books are on my TBR 😂 apart from The Thirst by Nesbo which I’ve read and thoroughly enjoyed and needs to be moved to my favourite paperbacks books trolley. Hello everyone and happy Friday! Tonight I’m very excited as I’m going to be visiting my family tomorrow very briefly. I haven’t seen my sister @chrissireads since the summer and I haven’t seen my Mum since December 2019!! A year and a half almost!! All your fault Corona 🦠😒 This is the final part of my birthday book haul. Afterwards we’ll just be back to regular book hauls - yes I STILL have some books to share 🙈 I feel a bit sorry for the Ken Follett, compared to these three other gorgeous pieces of cover art, it looks quite plain and ordinary 😂 but I’m very much looking forward to starting a new, epic historical series that will be FAR from ordinary I’m sure! The cover of Fault Lines was designed by the super talented @hollydrawsinink and I fell in love with it instantly. Those of you that know me well might be aware that I’m all about the beautiful covers 😍 but the story, set in Japan (another tick!) looks too be just as wonderful. Finally, two more stunning covers - Boys Don’t Cry and a short story collection called Milk, Blood, Heat. I’ve heard amazing things about both these books and I’m keen to read all of them as soon as I can. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors.
