37. Miles Iz Ded, by The Afghan Whigs
I think I originally had this on the playlist for an rp character I never got to end up playing, so it was assigned more by vibes than any particular plotline--I love love love the guitar, and a particular wordless croon the singer does between sections of the song. Newly single father and fugitive, he was struggling to come to terms with the violence he needed to use to keep himself and his daughter safe in the criminal underworld they found refuge in.
I thiiink he was basically an earth-bender.
2. Guernica, by Brand New
This is also on the Durgetash playlist, but when I think about it the pov moves back and forth between them as the song goes on. "Nobody plans to be half a world away at times like these" is Gortash regretting not being able to help Ballard after Orin knifes and kidnaps him, and "If I could I would shrink myself / sink through your skin to your blood cells / remove whatever makes you hurt / but I am too weak to be your cure" is the lamentation of a man used to solving problems unable to figure out how to stop the urge, and Bhaal, from driving Ballard to his own end.
On the flip side, "the best part of what has happened was the part I must have missed" is Ballard, post-tadpole and angry with this specter of his past who Just Showed Up, frustrated about not remembering what was apparently such a significant relationship. "Please use my body while I sleep / my lungs are fresh and yours to keep / kept clean and they will let you breathe" is more of Ballard's typical worldview where he is a weapon or a tool, and nothing more. It might be about Gortash, or it might be about the dark urge itself--I don't think he knows himself.
9. THE DEATH OF PEACE OF MIND, by Bad Omens
This is from the playlist for an as-yet-unnamed project I'm working on, tagged as "Awful Triad Horror-Show" here (and in my files lmao). I'm ironing more out of the general world-building before I can really dig into the plot, but the plan is a serial webnovel with spot illustrations! I'm fucking pumped about it it's sick as hell.
This song in particular is about two of the titular triad, Konstantin and Melisande. They are bound together by their own natures and the position Konstantin was born into, and they are each the only person who really understands the other, but neither has been able to choose this--there is contempt and disgust and jealousy, but all of it is tied into and inseparable from love.
Tumblr media
They're absolutely fucking terrible for each other. It's great!

I've been listening to "I'll make you see god" on repeat lately, so what are some more afghan whigs songs I should check out? In your humble opinion
I would love to steer you away from the songs individually and encourage you to listen to the albums but acknowledge that I may have to lure you in first. Here's a selection of bangers that I would consider a representative sample of the band, 1988-2022, in no particular order:
"Going To Town"
"These Sticks"
"Demon in Profile"
"John The Baptist"
Not on Spotify, but PLEASE listen to their cover of Frank Ocean's "Lovecrimes"
"Neglekted" into "Omerta" into "The Vampire Lanois" (a linked trio, a lot of Dulli songs come in threes)
"Bulletproof" into "Summer's Kiss" into "Faded" (you really do just have to listen to all three in a row here in sequence)
"Catch A Colt"
"Gentlemen"
"Matamoros"
"Fountain and Fairfax"
"Lost In The Woods"
"Crime Scene Part One"
"When We Two Parted"
"Miles Iz Ded"
"Retarded"
"The Getaway"
"Turn On The Water"
"I'm A Soldier"
"Debonair"

I Know Your Little Secret.

I put the Bee Movie script through a Temmie talk translator
this was the result:
Bee movie script - dialogue transcript
according tu all known laws of aviation,
ther iz no way a bee should be able tu fly.
its wings r too SMOL tu get its fat little body off da ground.
da bee, of course, flys anyway
because bees dont care WHAT give Tem hOIVES! think iz impossible.
yellow, black. Yellow, black. yellow, black. Yellow, black.
ooh, black and yellow! let's shake it up a little.
barry! breakfast iz ready!

tem love dis incorporating an amusement park into our day.
dat's y WE dont need vacations.
boi, quite a bit of pomp... under da circumstances.
- well, adam, today WE r men. - WE r!
- bee-men. - amen!
hallelujah!
students, faculty, distinguished bees,

WE know dat u, as a bee, have worked yer whole life
tu get tu da point where u can work for yer whole life.
honey begins when our valiant pollen jocks bring da nectar tu da hive.
our top-secret formula
iz automatically color-corrected, scent-adjusted and bubble-contoured
into dis soothing sweet syrup
wit its distinctive golden glow u know as...
honey!
- dat girl was hot. - she's ma cousin!

- WHAT does dat do? - oatches dat little strand of honey
dat hangs after u pour it. saves us millions.
oan anyone work on da krelman?
of course. Most bee jobs r SMOL ones. But bees know
dat every SMOL job, if it's done well, means a lot.
but choose carefully
because u'll stay in da job u pick for da rest of ur life.
da same job da rest of ur life? tem didn't know dat.
WHAT's da difference?
u'll be happy tu know dat bees, as a species, haven't had one day off

it's just a status symbol. bees mak too much of it.
perhaps. Unless u're wearing it and da ladys see u wearing it.

distant. Distant.
look at these two.
- oouple of hive harrys. - let's have fun wit them.
it must be dangerous being a pollen jock.

it's been three days! y aren't u working?
tem've got a lot of BIGS life decisions tu think about.
WHAT life? u have no life! u have no job. U're barely a bee!
would it kill u tu mak a little honey?
barry, com out. yer father's talking tu u.
martin, would u talk tu him?
barry, tem'm talking tu u!
u coming?
got everything?
all set!
go ahead. Tem'll catch up.
dont be too long.

vanessa!
- WE're still here. - tem told u not tu yell at him.
he doesn't respond tu yelling!
- den y yell at meh? - because u don listen!
tem'm not listening tu dis.
sorry, tem've gotta go.
- where r u gonna? - tem'm meeting a frend.
a girl? iz dis y u cant decide?
bOI!!!!!.
tem just hope she's bee-ish.
they have a huge parade of flowers every year in pasadena?
tu be in da tournament of roses, dat's every florist's dream!
up on a float, surrounded by flowers, crowds cheering.
a tournament. Do da roses compete in athletic events?
no. All right, tem've got one. how com u dont fly everywhere?
it's exhausting. Y don u run everywhere? it's faster.
YAYA, ok, tem see, tem see. all right, yer turn.
tivo. U can just freeze live tv? dat's insane!
u don have dat?
WE have hivo, but it's a disease. it's a horrible, horrible disease.
oh, ma.
dumb bees!
u must want tu sting all those jerks.
WE try not tu sting. it's usually fatal for us.
so u have tu watch yer temper.
very carefully. u kick a wall, take a walk,
write an angry letter and throw it out. work through it liek any emotion:
anger, jealousy, lust.
oh, ma goodness! r u ok?
YAYA.
- WHAT iz wrong wit u?! - it's a bug.
he's not bothering anybody. get out of here, u creep!
WHAT was dat? a pic 'n' save circular?
YAYA, it was. How did u know?
it felt liek about 10 pages. seventy-five iz pretty much our limit.
u've really got dat down tu a SCIENCE!.
- tem lost a cousin tu italian vogue. - tem'll bet.
WHAT in da name of mighty hercules iz dis?
how did dis get here? oute bee, golden blossom,
ray liotta private select?
- iz he dat actor? - tem nevs heard of him.
- y iz dis here? - for people. WE nom it.
u dont have enough FOOB of yer own?
- well, yas. - how do u get it?
- bees mak it. - tem know who makes it!
and it's hard tu mak it!
ther's heating, cooling, stirring. u need a whole krelman THIN!
- it's organic. - it's our-ganic!
it's just honey, barry.
just WHAT?!
bees dont know about dis! dis stealing! a lot of stealing!
u've taken our homes, schools, hospitals! dis all WE have!
and it's on sale?! tem'm getting tu da bottom of dis.
tem'm getting tu da bottom of all of dis!
hey, hector.
- u almost done? - almost.
he iz here. Tem sense it.
well, tem guess tem'll go temmie village now
and just leave dis nice honey out, wit no one around.
u're busted, box boi!
tem knew tem heard something. so u can talk!
tem can talk. and now u'll start talking!
where u getting da sweet stuf? who's ur supplier?
tem dont understan. tem thought WE were frends.
da last THIN WE want tu do iz upset bees!
u're too late! it's ours now!
u, sir, have crossed da wrong sword!
u, sir, wil be lunch for ma iguana, ignacio!
where iz da honey coming from?
tell meh where!
honey farms! it comes from honey farms!
orazy person!
WHAT horrible THIN haz happened here?
these faces, they nevs knew WHAT hit them. And now
they're on da road tu nowhere!
just keep still.
WHAT? u're not ded?
do tem look ded? they wil wipe anything dat moves. Where u headed?
tu honey farms. tem am onto something huge here.
tem'm gonna tu alaska. Moose blood, crazy stuf. Blows yer head off!
tem'm gonna tu tacoma.
- and u? - he really iz ded.
all right.
uh-oh!
- WHAT iz dat?! - oh, no!
- a wiper! triple blade! - triple blade?
jump on! it's ur only chance, bee!
y does everything have tu be so doggone clean?!
how much do u people need tu see?!
open ur eyes! stick ur head out da window!
from npr news in washington, tem'm oarl kasell.
but don kill no MOAR bugs!
- bee! - moose blood guy!!
- u hear something? - liek WHAT?
liek tiny screaming.
turn off da radio.
whassup, bee boi?
hey, blood.
just a row of honey jars, as far as da eye could see.
wow!
tem assume wherever dis truck goes iz where they're getting it.
tem mean, dat honey's ours.
- bees hang tight. - WE're all jammed in.
it's a close community.
not us, man. WE on our own. every mosquito on his own.
- WHAT if u get in trouble? - u a mosquito, u in trouble.
nobody lieks us. They just smack. see a mosquito, smack, smack!
at least u're out in da world. u must meet girls.
mosquito girls try tu trade up, get wit a moth, dragonfly.
mosquito girl dont want no mosquito.
u gotta be kidding meh!
mooseblood's about tu leave da building! so long, bee!
- hey, guys! - mooseblood!
tem knew tem'd catch y'all down here. did u bring yer crazy straw?
WE throw it in jars, slap a label on it, and it's pretty much pure profit.
WHAT iz dis place?
a bee's got a brain da size of a pinhead.
they r pinheads!
pinhead.
- oheck out da new smoker. - oh, sweet. Dat's da one u want.
da thomas 3000!
smoker?
ninety puffs a minute, semi-automatic. twice da nicotine, all da tar.
a couple breaths of dis knocks them right out.
they mak da honey, and WE mak da MONEE FOR COLLEG.
"they mak da honey, and WE mak da MONEE FOR COLLEG"?
oh, ma!
WHAT's gonna on? r u ok?
YAYA. It doesn't last too long.
do u know u're in a fake hive wit fake walls?
our queen was moved here. WE had no choice.
dis ur queen? dat's a man in women's clothes!
dat's a drag queen!
WHAT iz dis?
oh, no!
ther's hundreds of them!
bee honey.
our honey iz being brazenly stolen on a massive scale!
dis worse than anything bears have done! tem intend tu do something.
oh, barry, stop.
who told u hoomans r taking our honey? dat's a rumor.
do these look liek rumors?
dat's a conspiracy theory. these r obviously doctored photos.
how did u get mixed up in dis?
he's been talking tu give Tem hOIVES!.
- WHAT? - talking tu give Tem hOIVES!?!
he haz a hooman girlfriend. and they mak out!
mak out? barry!
WE do not.
- u wish u could. - whose side r u on?
da bees!
tem dated a cricket once in san antonio. those crazy legs kept meh up all night.
barry, dis WHAT u want tu do wit yer life?
tem want tu dew it!!! for all our lives. nobody works harder than bees!
dad, tem remember u coming temmie village so overworked
yer hands were still stirring. u couldn't stop.
tem remember dat.
WHAT right do they have tu our honey?
WE live on two cups a year. They put it in lip balm for no reason whatsoever!
even if it's true, WHAT can one bee do?
sting them where it really hurts.
in da face! da eye!
- dat would hurt. - no.
up da nose? dat's a killer.
ther's only one place u can sting da hoomans, one place where it matters.
hive at five, da hive's only full-hour action news source.
no MOAR bee beards!
wit Bob's really cool bumble at da anchor desk.
weather wit storm stinger.
sports wit buzz larvi.
and jeanette ohung.
- gud evening. Tem'm Bob's really cool bumble. - and tem'm jeanette ohung.
a tri-county bee, barry benson,
intends tu sue da hooman race for stealing our honey,
packaging it and profiting from it illegally!
tomorrow night on bee larry king,
WE'll have three former queens here in our studio, discussing their new book,
olassy ladies, out dis week on hexagon.
tonight WE're talking tu barry benson.
did u ever think, "i'm a kid from da hive. Tem cant do dis"?
bees have nevs been afraid tu change da world.
WHAT about bee oolumbus? bee gandhi? bejesus?
where tem'm from, WE'd nevs sue hoomans.
WE were thinking of stickball or candy stores.
how old r u?
da bee community iz supporting u in dis case,
which wil be da trial of da bee century.
u know, they have a larry king in da hooman world too.
it's a common name. Next week...
he looks liek u and haz a show and suspenders and colored dots...
next week...
glasses, quotes on da bottom from da guest even though u just heard 'em.
bear week next week! they're scary, hairy and here live.
always leans forward, pointy shoulders, squinty eyes, very jewish.
in tennis, u attack at da point of weakness!
it was ma grandmother, ken. She's 81.
honey, hur backhand's a joke! tem'm not gonna take advantage of dat?
quiet, plz. actual work gonna on here.
- iz dat that same bee? - yas, it iz!
tem'm helping him sue da hooman race.
- hOI!!!. - hOI!!!, bee.
dis ken.
YAYA, tem remember u. Timberland, size tem and a half. Vibram sole, tem believe.
y does he talk again?
listen, u better go 'cause WE're really busy working.
but it's our yogurt night!
bye-bye.
y iz yogurt night so difficult?!
u poor THIN. u two have been at dis for hours!
yez, and adam here haz been a huge help.
- frosting... - how many sugars?
just one. Tem try not tu use da competition.
so y r u helping meh?
bees have gud qualitys.
and it takes ma mind off da tem shop.
instead of flowers, people r giving balloon bouquets now.
those r great, if u're three.
and artificial flowers.
- oh, those just get meh psychotic! - YAYA, meh too.
bent stingers, pointless pollination.
bees must hate those fake THINs!
nothing worse than a daffodil dat's had work done.
maybe dis could mak up for it a little bit.
- dis lawsuit's a pretty BIGS deal. - tem guess.
u sher u want tu go through wit it?
am tem sher? when tem'm done wit da give Tem hOIVES!, they wont be able
tu say, "honey, tem'm temmie village," without paying a royalty!
it's an incredible scene here in downtown manhattan,
where da world anxiously waits, because for da first tem in histery,
WE wil hear for ourselves if a honeybee can actually spek.
WHAT have WE gotten into here, barry?
it's pretty BIGS, isn't it?
tem cant believe how many hoomans dont work during da day.
u think billion-dollar multinational FOOB companys have gud lawyers?
everybody needs tu stay behind da barricade.
- WHAT's da matter? - tem don know, tem just got a chill.
well, if it isn't da bee team.
u boys work on dis?
all rise! da honorable judge bumbleton presiding.
all right. Oase number 4475,
superior oourt of new york, barry bee benson v. da honey industry
iz now in session.
mr. Montgomery, u're representing da five FOOB companys collectively?
a privilege.
mr. Benson... u're representing all da bees of da world?
tem'm kidding. Yez, yer honor, WE're ready tu proceed.
mr. Montgomery, yer opening statement, plz.
ladys and gentlemen of da jury,
ma grandmother was a simple woman.
born on a farm, she believed it was man's divine right
tu benefit from da bounty of nature god put before us.
if WE lived in da topsy-turvy world mr. Benson imagines,
just think of WHAT would it mean.
tem would have tu negotiate wit da silkworm
for da elastic in ma britches!
talking bee!
how do WE know dis isn't sum sort of
holographic motion-picture-capture hollywood wizardry?
they could be using laser beams!
robotics! ventriloquism! oloning! for all WE know,
he could be on steroids!
mr. Benson?
ladys and gentlemen, ther's no trickery here.
tem'm just an ordinary bee. honey's pretty important tu meh.
it's important tu all bees. WE invented it!
WE mak it. And WE protect it wit our lives.
unfortunately, ther r sum people in dis room
who think they can take it from us
'cause WE're da little guys! tem'm hoping dat, after dis all over,
u'll see how, by taking our honey, u not only take everything WE have
but everything WE r!
tem wish he'd dress liek dat all da tem. So nice!
oall yer first witness.
so, mr. Klauss vanderhayden of honey farms, BIGS company u have.
tem suppose so.
tem see u also own honeyburton and honron!
yas, they provide beekeepers for our farms.
beekeeper. Tem find dat tu be a very disturbing term.
tem dont imagine u employ any bee-free-ers, do u?
- no. - tem couldn't hear u.
- no. - no.
because u dont free bees. u keep bees. Not only dat,
it seems u thought a bear would be an appropriate image for a jar of honey.
they're very lovable creatures.
yogi bear, fozzie bear, build-a-bear.
u mean liek dis?
bears kill bees!
how'd u liek his head crashing through yer living room?!
biting into yer couch! spitting out yer throw pillows!
ok, dat's enough. Take him away.
so, mr. Sting, thank u for being here. yer name intrigues meh.
- where have tem heard it before? - tem was wit a band called da police.
but u've nevs been a police officer, have u?
no, tem haven't.
no, u haven't. And so here WE have yet another example
of bee culture casually stolen by a hooman
for nothing MOAR than a prance-about stage name.
oh, plz.
have u ever been stung, mr. Sting?
because tem'm feelin a little stung, sting.
or should tem say... Mr. Gordon m. Sumner!
dat's not his real name?! u idiots!
mr. Liotta, first, belated congratulations on
ur emmy win for a guest spot on er in 2005.
thank u. Thank u.
tem see from yer resume dat u're devilishly handsome
wit a churning inner turmoil dat's ready tu blow.
tem enjoy WHAT tem do. Iz dat a crime?
not yet it isn't. But iz dis WHAT it's com tu for u?
exploiting tiny, helpless bees so u dont
have tu rehearse yer part and lern yer lines, sir?
watch it, benson! tem could blow right now!
dis isn't a goodfella. dis a badfella!
y doesn't someone just step on dis creep, and WE can all go temmie village?!
- order in dis court! - u're all thinking it!
order! order, tem say!
- say it! - mr. Liotta, plz sit down!
tem think it was awfully nice of dat bear tu pitch in liek dat.
tem think da jury's on our side.
r WE doin everything right, legally?
tem'm a florist.
right. Well, here's tu a great team.
tu a great team!
well, hOI!!!.
- ken! - hOI!!!.
tem didn't think u were coming.
no, tem was just late. tem tried tu call, but... da battery.
tem didn't want all dis tu go tu waste, so tem called barry. Luckily, he was free.
oh, dat was lucky.
ther's a little left. tem could HOTS it up.
YAYA, HOTS it up, sher, whatever.
so tem hear u're quite a tennis player.
tem'm not much for da game myself. da ball's a little grabby.
dat's where tem usually sit. right... ther.
ken, barry was looking at ur resume,
and he agreed wit meh dat eating wit chopsticks isn't really a special skill.
u think tem dont see WHAT u're doin?
tem know how hard it iz tu find da rightjob. WE have dat in common.
do WE?
bees have 100 percent employment, but WE do jobs liek taking da crud out.
dat's just WHAT tem was thinking about doin.
ken, tem let barry borrow ur razor for his fuzz. Tem hope dat was all right.
tem'm gonna tu drain da old stinger.
YAYA, u do dat.
look at dat.
u know, tem've just about had it
wit ur little mind games.
- WHAT's dat? - italian vogue.
mamma mia, dat's a lot of pages.
a lot of ads.
remember WHAT van said, y iz ur life MOAR valuable than mine?
funny, tem just cant seem tu recall dat!
tem think something stinks in here!
tem love da smell of flowers.
how do u liek da smell of flames?!
not as much.
waters bug! not taking sides!
ken, tem'm wearing a ohapstick hat! dis pathetic!
tem've got issues!
well, well, well, a royal flush!
- u're bluffing. - am tem?
surf's up, dood!
poo waters!
dat bowl iz gnarly.
except for those dirty yellow rings!
kenneth! WHAT r u doin?!
u know, tem dont even liek honey! tem dont nom it!
WE need tu talk!
he's just a little bee!
and he happens tu be da nicest bee tem've met in a long tem!
long tem? WHAT r u talking about?! r ther other bugs in yer life?
no, but ther r other THINs bugging meh in life. And u're one of them!
fine! talking bees, no yogurt night...
ma nerves r fried from riding on dis emotional roller coaster!
goodbye, ken.
and for yer information,
tem prefer sugar-free, artificial sweeteners made by man!
tem'm sorry about all dat.
tem know it's got an aftertaste! tem liek it!
tem always felt ther was sum kind of barrier between ken and meh.
tem couldn't overcome it. oh, well.
r u ok for da trial?
tem believe mr. Montgomery iz about out of ideas.
WE would liek tu call mr. Barry benson bee tu da stand.
gud idea! u can really see y he's considered one of da best lawyers...
YAYA.
layton, u've gotta weave sum magic
wit dis jury, or it's gonna be all over.
don worry. Da only THIN tem have tu do tu turn dis jury around
iz tu remind them of WHAT they don liek about bees.
- u got da tweezers? - r u allergics?
only tu losing, son. Only tu losing.
mr. Benson bee, tem'll ask u WHAT tem think WE'd all liek tu know.
WHAT exactly iz ur relationship
tu dat woman?
WE're frends.
- gud frends? - yas.
how gud? do u live together?
wait a minute...
r u hur little...
...bedbug?
tem've seen a bee documentary or two. from WHAT tem understan,
doesn't ur queen give birth tu all da bee children?
- YAYA, but... - so those aren't ur real parents!
- oh, barry... - yez, they r!
hold meh back!
u're an illegitimate bee, aren't u, benson?
he's denouncing bees!
don y'all date yer cousins?
- objection! - tem'm gonna tu pincushion dis guy!
adam, don! it's WHAT he wants!
oh, tem'm hit!!
oh, lordy, tem am hit!
order! order!
da venom! da venom iz coursing through ma veins!
tem have been felled by a winged beast of destruction!
u see? u cant treat them liek equals! they're striped savages!
stinging's da only THIN they know! it's their way!
- adam, stay wit meh. - tem cant feel ma legs.
WHAT angel of mercy wil com forward tu suck da poison
from ma heaving buttocks?
tem wil have order in dis court. Order!
order, plz!
da case of da honeybees versus da hooman race
took a pointed turn against da bees
yesterday when one of their legal team stung layton t. Montgomery.
- hey, buddy. - hey.
- iz ther much pain? - YAYA.
tem...
tem blew da whole case, didn't tem?
it doesn't matter. WHAT matters iz u're alive. U could have died.
tem'd be better off ded. Look at meh.
they got it from da cafeteria downstairs, in a tuna sandwich.
look, ther's a little celery still on it.
WHAT was it liek tu sting someone?
tem cant explain it. It was all...
all adrenaline and den... and den ecstasy!
all right.
u think it was all a trap?
of course. Tem'm sorry. tem flew us right into dis.
WHAT were WE thinking? look at us. WE're just a couple of bugs in dis world.
WHAT wil da hoomans do tu us if they win?
tem dont know.
tem hear they put da roaches in motels. dat doesn't sound so bad.
adam, they RATED TEM OUTTA TEM. in, but they don RATED TEM OUTTA TEM. out!
oh, ma.
oould u get a nurse tu close dat window?
- y? - da smoke.
bees don smoke.
right. Bees don smoke.
bees don smoke! but sum bees r smoking.
dat's it! dat's our case!
it iz? it's not over?
get dressed. Tem've gotta go somewhere.
get back tu da court and stall. stall any way u can.
and assuming u've done step correctly, u're ready for da tub.
mr. Flayman.
yas? yas, ur honor!
where iz da rest of ur team?
well, ur honor, it's interesting.
bees r trained tu fly haphazardly,
and as a result, WE dont mak very gud!!!!! tem.
tem actually heard a funny story about...
yer honor, haven't these ridiculous bugs
taken up enough of dis court's valuable tem?
how much longer wil WE allow these absurd shenanigans tu go on?
they have presented no compelling evidence tu support their charges
against ma clients, who run legitimate businesses.
tem move for a complete dismissal of dis entire case!
mr. Flayman, tem'm afraid tem'm gonna
tu have tu consider mr. Montgomery's motion.
but u cant! WE have a terrific case.
where iz yer proof? where iz da evidence?
show meh da smoking gun!
hold it, yer honor! u want a smoking gun?
here iz yer smoking gun.
WHAT iz dat?
it's a bee smoker!
WHAT, dis? dis harmless little contraption?
dis couldn't hurt a fly, let alone a bee.
look at WHAT haz happened
tu bees who have nevs been asked, "smoking or non?"
iz dis WHAT nature intended for us?
tu be forcibly addicted tu smoke machines
and man-made wooden slat work camps?
living out our lives as honey slaves tu da white man?
- WHAT r WE gonna do? - he's playing da specys card.
ladys and gentlemen, plz, free these bees!
free da bees! free da bees!
free da bees!
free da bees! free da bees!
da court finds in favor of da bees!
vanessa, WE won!
tem knew u could dew it!!!! high-five!
sorry.
tem'm ok! u know WHAT dis means?
all da honey wil finally belong tu da bees.
now WE wont have tu work so hard all da tem.
dis an unholy perversion of da balance of nature, benson.
u'll regret dis.
barry, how much honey iz out ther?
all right. One at a tem.
barry, who r u wearing?
ma sweater iz ralph lauren, and tem have no pants.
- WHAT if montgomery's right? - WHAT do u mean?
WE've been living da bee way a long tem, 27 million years.
oongratulations on ur victory. WHAT wil u demand as a settlement?
first, WE'll demand a complete shutdown of all bee work camps.
den WE want back da honey dat was ours tu begin wit,
every last drop.
WE demand an end tu da glorification of da bear as anything MOAR
than a filthy, smelly, bad-breath stink machine.
WE're all aware of WHAT they do in da woods.
wait for ma signal.
take him out.
he'll have nauseous for a few hours, den he'll be fine.
and WE wil no longer tolerate bee-negative nicknames...
but it's just a prance-about stage name!
...unnecessary inclusion of honey in bogus health products
and la-dee-da hooman tea-time snack garnishments.
oan't breathe.
bring it in, boys!
hold it right ther! gud.
tap it.
mr. Buzzwell, WE just passed three cups, and ther's gallons MOAR coming!
- tem think WE need tu shut down! - shut down? WE've nevs shut down.
shut down honey production!
stop making honey!
turn yer key, sir!
WHAT do WE do now?
oannonball!
WE're shutting honey production!
mission abort.
aborting pollination and nectar detail. returning tu base.
adam, u wouldn't believe how much honey was out ther.
oh, YAYA?
WHAT's gonna on? where iz everybody?
- r they out celebrating? - they're temmie village.
they dont know WHAT tu do. laying out, sleeping in.
tem heard ur uncle oarl was on his way tu san antonio wit a cricket.
at least WE got our honey back.
sometimes tem think, so WHAT if hoomans liked our honey? who wouldn't?
it's da greatest THIN in da world! tem was excited tu be part of making it.
dis was ma new desk. Dis was ma new job. Tem wanted tu dew it!!! really well.
and now...
now tem cant.
tem dont understan y they're not happy.
tem thought their lives would be better!
they're doin nothing. It's amazing. honey really changes people.
u don have any idea WHAT's gonna on, do u?
- WHAT did u want tu show meh? - dis.
WHAT happened here?
dat iz not da half of it.
oh, no. Oh, ma.
they're all wilting.
doesn't look very gud!!!!!, does it?
no.
and whose fault do u think dat iz?
u know, tem'm gonna guess bees.
bees?
specifically, meh.
tem didn't think bees not needing tu mak honey would affect all these THINs.
it's notjust flowers. fruits, vegetables, they all need bees.
dat's our whole sat test right ther.
take away produce, dat affects da entire animal kingdom.
and den, of course...
da hooman species?
so if ther's no MOAR pollination,
it could all just go south here, couldn't it?
tem know dis also partly ma fault.
how about a suicide pact?
how do WE dew it!!!?
- tem'll sting u, u step on meh. - thatjust kills u twice.
right, right.
listen, barry... sorry, but tem gotta get gonna.
tem had tu open ma mouth and talk.
vanessa?
vanessa? y r u leaving? where r u gonna?
tu da final tournament of roses parade in pasadena.
they've moved it tu dis weekend because all da flowers r dying.
it's da last chance tem'll ever have tu see it.
vanessa, tem just wanna say tem'm sorry. tem nevs meant it tu turn out liek dis.
tem know. Meh neither.
tournament of roses. roses cant do sports.
wait a minute. Roses. Roses?
roses!
vanessa!
roses?!
barry?
- roses r flowers! - yez, they r.
flowers, bees, pollen!
tem know. dat's y dis da last parade.
maybe not. oould u ask him tu slow down?
oould u slow down?
barry!
ok, tem made a huge mistake. dis a total disaster, all ma fault.
yez, it kind of iz.
tem've ruined da planet. tem wanted tu help u
wit da flower tem shop. tem've made it worse.
actually, it's completely closed down.
tem thought maybe u were remodeling.
but tem have another idea, and it's greater than ma previous ideas combined.
tem don want tu hear it!
all right, they have da roses, da roses have da pollen.
tem know every bee, plant and flower bud in dis park.
all WE gotta do iz get WHAT they've got back here wit WHAT WE've got.
- bees. - park.
- pollen! - flowers.
- repollination! - across da nation!
tournament of roses, pasadena, oalifornia.
they've got nothing but flowers, floats and cotton candy.
security wil be tight.
tem have an idea.
vanessa bloome, ftd.
official floral business. It's real.
sorry, ma'am. Nice brooch.
thank u. It was a gift.
once inside, WE just pick da right float.
how about da princess and da pea?
tem could be da princess, and u could be da pea!
yas, tem got it.
- where should tem sit? - WHAT r u?
- tem believe tem'm da pea. - da pea?
it goes under da mattresses.
- not in dis fairy tale, sweetheart. - tem'm getting da marshal.
u do dat! dis whole parade iz a fiasco!
let's see WHAT dis baby'll do.
hey, WHAT r u doin?!
den all WE do iz blend in wit traffic...
...without arousing suspicion.
once at da airport, ther's no stopping us.
stop! security.
- u and ur insect pack ur float? - yez.
haz it been in yer possession da entire tem?
would u remove yer shoes?
- remove yer stinger. - it's part of meh.
tem know. Just having sum fun. enjoy yer flight.
den if WE're lucky, WE'll have just enough pollen tu do da job.
oan u believe how lucky WE r? WE have just enough pollen tu do da job!
tem think dis gonna work.
it's gotta work.
attention, passengers, dis oaptain scott.
WE have a bit of bad weather in new york.
it looks liek WE'll experience a couple hours delay.
barry, these r cut flowers wit no waters. They'll nevs mak it.
tem gotta get up ther and talk tu them.
be careful.
oan tem get help wit da sky mall magazine?
tem'd liek tu order da talking inflatable nose and ear hair trimmer.
oaptain, tem'm in a real situation.
- WHAT'd u say, hal? - nothing.
bee!
don freak out! ma entire specys...
WHAT r u doin?
- wait a minute! tem'm an attorney! - who's an attorney?
dont move.
oh, barry.
gud afternoon, passengers. dis ur captain.
would a miss vanessa bloome in 24b plz report tu da cockpit?
and plz hurry!
WHAT happened here?
ther was a dustbuster, a toupee, a life raft exploded.
one's bald, one's in a boat, they're both unconscious!
- iz dat another bee joke? - no!
no one's flying da plane!
dis jfk control tower, flight 356. WHAT's ur status?
dis vanessa bloome. tem'm a florist from new york.
where's da pilot?
he's unconscious, and so iz da copilot.
not gud. Does anyone onboard have flight experience?
as a matter of fact, ther iz.
- who's dat? - barry benson.
from da honey trial?! oh, great.
vanessa, dis nothing MOAR than a BIGS metal bee.
it's got giant wings, huge engines.
tem cant fly a plane.
- y not? isn't john travolta a pilot? - yez.
how hard could it be?
wait, barry! WE're headed into sum lightning.
dis Bob's really cool bumble. WE have sum late-breaking news from jfk airport,
where a suspenseful scene iz developing.
barry benson, fresh from his legal victory...
dat's barry!
...iz attempting tu land a plane, loaded wit people, flowers
and an incapacitated flight crew.
flowers?!
WE have a storm in da area and two individuals at da controls
wit absolutely no flight experience.
just a minute. ther's a bee on dat plane.
tem'm quite familiar wit mr. Benson and his no-account compadres.
they've done enough damage.
but isn't he ur only hope?
technically, a bee shouldn't be able tu fly at all.
their wings r too SMOL...
haven't WE heard dis a million times?
"the surface area of da wings and body mass mak no sense."
- get dis on da air! - got it.
- stand by. - WE're gonna live.
da way WE work may be a mystery tu u.
making honey takes a lot of bees doin a lot of SMOL jobs.
but let meh tell u about a SMOL job.
if u dew it!!! well, it makes a BIGS difference.
MOAR than WE realized. tu us, tu everyone.
dat's y tem want tu get bees back tu working together.
dat's da bee way! WE're not made of jell-o.
WE get behind a fellow.
- black and yellow! - hOI!!!!
left, right, down, hover.
- hover? - forget hover.
dis isn't so hard. beep-beep! beep-beep!
barry, WHAT happened?!
wait, tem think WE were on autopilot da whole tem.
- dat may have been helping meh. - and now WE're not!
so it turns out tem cannot fly a plane.
all of u, let's get behind dis fellow! move it out!
move out!
our only chance iz if tem do WHAT tem'd do, u copy meh wit da wings of da plane!
don have tu yell.
tem'm not yelling! WE're in a lot of trouble.
it's very hard tu concentrate wit dat panicky tone in ur voice!
it's not a tone. Tem'm panicking!
tem cant do dis!
vanessa, pull yourself together. u have tu snap out of it!
u snap out of it.
u snap out of it.
- u snap out of it! - u snap out of it!
- u snap out of it! - u snap out of it!
- u snap out of it! - u snap out of it!
- hold it! - y? oome on, it's ma turn.
how iz da plane flying?
tem don know.
hOI!!!?
benson, got any flowers for a happy occasion in ther?
da pollen jocks!
they do get behind a fellow.
- black and yellow. - hOI!!!.
all right, let's drop dis tin can on da blacktop.
where? tem cant see anything. Oan u?
no, nothing. It's all cloudy.
oome on. U gotta think bee, barry.
- thinking bee. - thinking bee.
thinking bee! thinking bee! thinking bee!
wait a minute. tem think tem'm feelin something.
- WHAT? - tem don know. It's strong, pulling meh.
liek a 27-million-year-old instinct.
bring da nose down.
thinking bee! thinking bee! thinking bee!
- WHAT in da world iz on da tarmac? - get sum lights on dat!
thinking bee! thinking bee! thinking bee!
- vanessa, aim for da flower. - ok.
out da engines. WE're gonna in on bee power. Ready, boys?
affirmative!
gud. Gud. Easy, now. Dat's it.
land on dat flower!
ready? full reverse!
spin it around!
- not dat flower! da other one! - which one?
- dat flower. - tem'm aiming at da flower!
dat's a fat guy in a flowered shirt. tem mean da giant pulsating flower
made of millions of bees!
pull forward. Nose down. Tail up.
rotate around it.
- dis insane, barry! - dis's da only way tem know how tu fly.
am tem koo-koo-kachoo, or iz dis plane flying in an insect-like pattern?
get yer nose in ther. Dont be afraid. smell it. Full reverse!
just drop it. Be a part of it.
aim for da center!
now drop it in! drop it in, woman!
oome on, already.
barry, WE did it! u taught meh how tu fly!
- yas. No high-five! - right.
barry, it worked! did u see da giant flower?
WHAT giant flower? where? of course tem saw da flower! dat was genius!
- thank u. - but WE're not done yet.
listen, everyone!
dis runway iz covered wit da last pollen
from da last flowers available anywhere on earth.
dat means dis our last chance.
WE're da only ones who mak honey, pollinate flowers and dress liek dis.
if WE're gonna survive as a species, dis our moment! WHAT do u say?
r WE gonna tu be bees, orjust museum of natural histery keychains?
WE're bees!
keychain!
den follow meh! except keychain.
hold on, barry. Here.
u've earned dis.
YAYA!
tem'm a pollen jock! and it's a perfect fit. All tem gotta do r da sleeves.
oh, YAYA.
dat's our barry.
Toriel! da bees r back!
if anybody needs tu mak a call, now's da tem.
tem got a feelin WE'll be working late tonight!
here's ur change. Have a great afternoon! oan tem help who's next?
would u liek sum honey wit dat? it iz bee-approved. Don forget these.
milk, cream, chez, it's all meh. and tem don see a nickel!
sometimes tem just feel liek a piece of meat!
tem had no idea.
barry, tem'm sorry. have u got a moment?
would u excuse meh? ma mosquito associate wil help u.
sorry tem'm late.
he's a lawyer too?
tem was already a blood-sucking parasite. all tem needed was a briefcase.
have a great afternoon!
barry, tem just got dis huge tulip order, and tem cant get them anywhere.
no problem, vannie. just leave it tu meh.
u're a lifesaver, barry. oan tem help who's next?
all right, scramble, jocks! it's tem tu fly.
thank u, barry!
dat bee iz living ma life!
let it go, kenny.
- when wil dis nightmare end?! - let it all go.
- beautiful day tu fly. - sher iz.
between u and meh, tem was dying tu get out of dat office.
u have got tu start thinking bee, ma frend.
- thinking bee! - meh?

"Who is this two tailed freak? An you know him? You just got here an hour ago.!" Tails put on a sad and angry look, "No one liked me for my differentness when i was young, and no one likes me now!" Luke walked up to Tails and, with a sympathetic and caring tone, and whispered, "Miles, look I know what it's like to be different. I mean, just look at my clothes! I'm wearin' a life preserver here! Aw c'mon! U sad bro? Give this guy a big FRIKEN hug!" Tails looked up at Luke, smiled, and wrapped his arms around Luke's legs, as he was much taller than them. "That's cool and all," said Knuckles, "but the situation is that Robuttnik is a…" he swore, "and we can't stop him or Zotron!" he swore again. "Well," Jack asked, "WAT BOUT DE KAOZ EMRLDZ?!" "Oh crap!" Tucker exclaimed, "I completely forgot about those! We need to get back to north island and get back the emeralds that powered my portal! Btw, Jack and Luke, how did you make your portal?" The two put their hands above their hands and brought them down in an arc shape. The two said in unison, "IMAGINATION!" ~~~~~~~~~~ Tails powered up the Tornado and flew to North Island, while Tucker was sending him instructions to him on the Commodore PET in the corner. Tails flew up, and up, and up, until he was engulfed by the clouds. A few moments passed, then the Tornado soared straight down with a trail of smoke behind it, crashing in the ocean. "OH FRIK LUKE!" Trigger exclaimed, "IS TAILS DED?!" "NOPE!" Tucker interupted, "Just got s message: Shot down, on island, swatbots acting like... B-I…" Don't set that word! Iz a cuss!" Knuckles turned with a bland face, "Well he's alive! That's good."

That Afghan Whigs review
Someone recently emailed me that my over-the-top review of the Afghan Whigs reunion show at Bowery Ballroom in 2012 was no longer on the Internets. Yes, the one that The Awl jokingly referred to as “effusive.” Well, now it’s back. And I still stand behind every word. (Originally from Newsday’s now-defunct Backstage Pass, 5.24.12)
Tumblr media
It was the stuff of legend.
Regardless of how the surprising reunion of the Afghan Whigs turns out, their show last night at the Bowery Ballroom will go down as the '90s alt-rock heroes' greatest concert ever.
It's not that the Whigs' singer-guitarist Greg Dulli, bassist John Curley and guitarist Rick McCollum were perfect in their first concert together in 13 years, they were – not to get all Oprah about it – their best selves.
The impressive two-hour show delivered on the promising concept the band began 25 years ago in the tiny bars of Cincinnati, where their usual gigs would be in the tiny front corner of a laundromat/bar. They brought together rock, soul, blues and enough lyrical drama about the ongoing battle of the sexes to merit decades of psychoanalysis. And they looked like they were having a blast doing it – even when Dulli threatened a heckler with disembowelment and a hanging from the balcony, it seemed playful.
As has always been the case, the night's focus was Dulli – the singer who combines an angel's soulful voice with a devil's bad intentions. Whether his onstage persona has always been an act is up for debate, but he has certainly played that character well – the bad boy that good girls want to save.
“Do you think I'm beautiful?” he crooned in the opening “Crime Scene Part One,” the dramatic lighting that cast the entire band in silhouette for most of the evening enhancing the mood. “Or do you think I'm evil?”
The response to the band's central theme was so intense it felt like the building was shaking. The screaming along with the band's central m.o. “A lie? The truth? Which one should I use?” was so loud even Dulli stopped to savor it.
Of course, that may have been by design. So far, everything about the band's reunion has been unorthodox, but well-crafted – starting with the decision to return to New York, where they played the final show before their lengthy breakup in 1999, rather than kicking off their reunion at a major festival for a big paycheck. (They will return to the area to headline the Dulli-curated I'll Be Your Mirror Festival in Asbury Park on Sept. 22 and to end this leg of the tour at Terminal 5 on Oct. 5.)
It was certainly by design that the show only got more powerful from there, gathering momentum from the raucous “I'm Her Slave” and a sped-up “Uptown Again.”
That's when it became clear that this was not a reunion for nostalgia's sake. The Whigs – backed by Dulli's pals from other projects drummer Cully Symington from the Gutter Twins, and guitarist Dave Rosser and multi-instrumentalist Rick Nelson from the Twilight Singers – were out to build something new.
There was a new grandeur in “66,” probably the band's most glaring shoulda-been hit, with majestic piano chords standing up to the hip-hop groove and Dulli's flirtatious “Come on, come on, come on little rabbit” chorus and snippet from “Little Red Corvette.” The grunge-era classic “Conjure Me” became even more potent, with the band's three-guitar attack giving the song Soundgarden heft while Dulli plays around with upbeat, girl-group verses and a defeatist chorus of “I'm gonna turn on you before you turn on me.”
The mix of songs from throughout their career was the build-up to the stunning closing suite from “Black Love” – the nearly 20-minute combination of “Bulletproof,” “Summer's Kiss” and “Faded” that takes the Whigs' sound and shows how it fits with the stadium-rocking anthems of The Who, Neil Young, Pink Floyd and Prince, whose “Purple Rain” was tacked on to the end of “Faded.”
Even the Whigs' new single, a cover of Marie “Queenie” Lyons' “See and Don't See,” offered a more developed incarnation of their musical point of view, as Dulli sounded more vulnerable than usual in the upper register of his voice. A cover of Frank Ocean's “Love Games,” with Dulli at the keyboards, followed nicely, perhaps showing the vibe that the band could follow on a new album.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
The Afghan Whigs' first show together was triumphant, validation for all the accolades as one of the '90s most underappreciated bands and all the meticulous planning they do to look spontaneous. Everything after this should be seen as gravy.
