Apple will let European Union customers to download applications and make purchases from sources other than its App Store beginning in March.

Since the App Store comes preloaded on all iOS devices, users of iPhones have only ever been able to install applications and games from this source. This helps Apple keep a tight rein on security, unapproved features, and taste by enabling it to review every software before it is made accessible for download on iPhones around the globe.

Critics of this strategy contend that Apple has a monopoly since it takes a 30% cut of every digital transaction made via the Apple App Store. While Amazon no longer sells Kindle books within its iOS shopping app, Netflix no longer permits new users to sign up for its streaming service inside the iPhone app in order to avoid having to pay the required commission.
