EYY I have gotten my Asbel Redesign to a point where I feel pretty proud of it! Asbel is such a hard character to design, it’s crazy. He has this air about him that if you don’t get right then it doesnt feel like him….
This is not a “fix” btw!! It’s a practice my professor wanted us to take, a couple years ago, and an experiment to see what parts of our style shine ☺️ I wanted to try out with a few other characters! Check out Cheria and Sophie, if you’re interested!

how do you sketch out bodies?
depends! Some people draw a silhouette first and then draw the person, some people build them from shapes, and some just go for it! I’m personally a mix of the last two :P
By building the character, it usually helps to build them from the bones-out. Definitely study the shape of the ribcage and pelvis! You don’t have to get the shapes exactly right. It’s more about getting beginner artists out of the habit of using perfect circles/ovals for everything. For me, the only places I use circles for are heads, joints, and the stomach. Otherwise, use organic shapes or rounded triangles! That helps to give a more natural look to the body. Because the body is organic! So your construction of it should be, too.
I usually place the head, first, and then get into lines of action. A Line of Action (LoA) is a general direction/movement/energy that you want the character to go. It can be used in a number of ways, but visualizing it as the spine is a good way to start.
The head grounds a specific area that I want the emphasis of the character to be in (the face is usually a strong focal point for characters, so it’s going to draw the most attention). The Line of Action is generally the energy/movement that I want my character to bend in, so I want to make sure that my proportions stay in the relative area that the line is in! After that, I figure out the LoA for the shoulders. For me, this helps figure out both the ribcage and the arms. It also gives a nice shelf for the head to float above :P
(think you can tell what line was my LoA in the second sketch above?)
Also, keep in mind that THE BODY RESPONDS TO ITSELF! Rarely does a human keep their pelvis, ribcage, head in a straight line. Head movement will change the direction of the spine, spine will change the pelvis, etc.
If you’re doing gesture drawings of a model, something that helps me figure out the motion of their body is to find the angels between either the chin, clavicle, sternum, bottom ribcage, belly button, and then the pubic. Depending on what you can see, of course.
Gestures are fun! And if you’re struggling with finding a good method of the LoA for yourself, gesture drawing will for sure help you in that area.
Hope this helps! Sketching out bodies is different for everyone, with some similarities here and there. Don’t be afraid to try out different methods, and take from them what feels most comfortable for you. I can only tell you what ~I~ do, not what everyone should do :P
