Rocks and Hard Places
Tumblr media
Lusithina's weak reputation was a ripe opportunity for the Smethyngs to strike the coasts to claim what's theirs and push back against Qalosi domination. Chaos spread across the central and southern regions of Thyngland as thousands of discontent Smethyngs rallied and joined forces under the call of Kairne, the overseer of Thynphalis and heir of the Lapidaris craft.
His reputation preceeds him, being known for his many victories in battles in the far north and his dashing personality, being able to carve out a place for the Smethyngs amongst Qalosi rule. His disloyal nature was always a large concern ever since his rise to power - a concern that has now been affirmed. He has sworn to bring equity between the Smethyngs and Qalos, sparing all those that do not take up arms. Many of the local and prideful despots and mayors were killed, as Kairne gathered support through virtue and fear alike.
This eventually lead to the poleis of Porpyros and Qaleia to be completely surrounded, and as Kairne himself prepares for a frontal assault on the southern metropolis - Lusithina seeks to take control of the situation in Mauphos.
Tumblr media
A series of Smethyng skirmishes carved their path through the mountains, connecting their supporting towns of southern Amphorea, Maphrachos and Aksuchori. A charge lead by despot Gophis of Metochi and their Knight Gianis overtook the northern towns of Straphoteios, Phalisophos and Saltses, seizing a number of Qalos ships and creating a formidable line of assault into Porpyrea.
A request for help reached Amphelitsi and Qionia, as both poleis and surrounding towns began levying troops to flank the rebels and put a stop to the madness in Mauphos. Despotess Lusithina along with most of her Porpyrean council began organizing defenses, with many Smethyngs within the city kept within house arrest, and some thrown into the dungeons to prevent further internal chaos. Palisades were built, and old garrisons renovated and lined with troops.
Lusithina spent many of her days scouring the forts for those that suit her tastes, surprisingly boosting morale with her down-to-earth and affectionate stance towards the common folk, but raising many questions about the despotess' commitment to her role and unprofessional behaviour.

A message from Gerondissa Thekla
Having entered the fourth week of quarantine, and in view of the coming of the Holy days of Pascha, being pressured by the stress and fear that is being imposed on us; with the pressure developing from trying to govern the monastery under such circumstances and with deep sadness filling my heart from the pain and sadness of the people around us, due to their lack of certain basic necessities but mainly due to the deprivation of the consolation and strength offered by the church attendance and the strongest medicine, Holy Communion, brought me to seclusion and prayer. I implored and I continually implore God to send His ineffable mercy to the world, to heal the sick to strengthen them, to comfort the elderly and those that are struck by loneliness and are living difficult situations.
I was somehow feeling guilty because we at the Monastery, at these times are comforted by the sacramental life, where on the contrary our brethren are lacking this, and I was looking for a way to comfort them. Then I heard a voice telling me; “Remember what you used to do?” Then, as if my mind opened, I saw and believe me, I relived (in feeling) those unique moments.
When I first entered the Monastery in 1975 (forty five years ago), it was at a time that the Holy Monastery of Philotheou on Mount Athos did not number many monks and there were very few priests. Therefore there were not enough priests to serve the Metochia. Our Monastery was a Metochi (dependence) of the Monastery of Philotheou, so for many years we did not have a priest to serve our needs. Someone would come, (very rarely), throughout the year, but never on Great Feasts: i.e. the Nativity of Christ, Pascha, Annunciation, Pentecost…, we were always left on these holy days with no priest.
If such a situation would take place at a Parish, the parishioners would complain, would yell, use indecent words, maybe even curse and the only one happy from all of this would be the “tempter” with his angels.
For us it would be the opposite. We would fast as if preparing for Holy Communion, we would gather together in our chapel which was an extension to a hallway, (¼ of the size of our Monastery’s church here). We would read the services and at the end, our Most Holy Gerondissa Makrina would “commune” us by giving us Great Holy Water and Holy Bread. She would always counsel us that, “If we would be as we should be spiritually, then it is possible noetically to receive Holy Communion from Holy Angels, just like we have read many times in the lives of the Saints.”
Believe me, back then we lived many heavenly moments which we never encountered again even after when we had a permanent priest and would serve forty day liturgies. Now I realize that due to the deprivation but also to the great zeal and patience we had, the Lord would bless us with grace that accompanies martyrdom.
The chapel would be fragrant as if someone had sprinkled it all over with myrrh. Our eyes would stream with endless tears. Our heart would leap from the Grace of God. On the days that we supposedly “communed”, without even realizing it, we would speak softly because we felt as if we had partaken in some sacred ceremony. Saying the prayer, our mouth would taste as if we had taken a very fragrant candy. We would feel the presence of Holy Communion, even though we had not received it, and throughout the day we would be cautious not to spit, nor chew gum and throw it out. So great was the sense of the presence of Holy Communion. No matter what I write, it is not possible to describe the feeling of Christ’s grace that we lived back in those days of deprivation, because there are not words to express this. A few years later, at the Holy Monastery of Philotheou, the number of priests grew and we no longer had a problem needing a priest; everything found its place in our monastery.
After 19 years, when obedience brought myself and sister Ephraimia here to Canada, we again encountered the same problem; the lack of priests. For 7 years, our Monastery did not have a priest. But now it was not so bad because the priests here had the order from the Archbishop to come during the week and serve the Divine Liturgy, so that we would commune. However, again Saturdays and Sundays and feast days we would not have a priest. The priests had to serve at their own parishes and communities. So, we would read the services, on our own, decorate the icons, the Cross for the Elevation of the Holy Cross, and for the Sunday of the veneration of the Cross during Great Lent; we would bring out the Lord’s Cross on Holy Thursday; and we would try to raise the morale of the young novices, who had complete inexperience of these things.
These, along with so many more are now a wealth of experiences that exists inside of us and whenever it is needed we open the “treasure box” of experiences and we choose whatever is needed depending on the circumstance.
Then suddenly, as if my nous opened and I relived all of this spiritual state very intensely, as it being an answer to my prayer; the message being that whoever prepares themselves with humility, without grumbling and protesting, but with much prayer and faith in the Providence of God, and receives Holy water and Holy Bread in replacement of Holy Communion and contemplates that theoretically “God did not permit me to receive Holy Communion, as being “unworthy and unprepared”, then this person will be filled by God’s grace of endurance of martyrdom, of which Saint Luke the doctor would say: “I loved much the grace of martyrdom, which so wonderfully cleanses the soul”.
The tempter wanted to close the churches; let us make our homes into churches. He shut 11 churches; let us open 11 thousand. May each home become a church; let prayer be raised like a torch of fire towards heaven; let the incense fragrance all the neighbourhoods; may the candle and the vigil lamp always be lit. Let us attend the services through electronic correspondence, praying together, and not lying down, or eating, or smoking. If we do this, instead of closing down the churches, they will grow and spread and whole cities will become churches. Then God will give His blessing, and seeing our repentance and our faith He will cast away this evil plague and give us the freedom along with our churches to live many years working for Him.
I wish you a Blessed Holy week, a spiritual ascent, a double well-being of spirit and soul, patience and unwavering trust in God’s Providence, so that the light of the Resurrection will shine forth in our hearts and replenish us with the gifts of the Most Holy Spirit. Amen.
“Blessed and Bright Resurrection!”
With infinite love in Christ

A Traveler's Respite
Tumblr media
Liburne reached Metochi, a Smethyng city built atop geothermal activity within the Agamena Hills on the northern end of the Astares Range, and utilizing its riches to host the third largest Temple-Forge in Thyngland. Many layers and shaped mountain faces make up the composition of this once thriving city.
When the war began, its mayor, Gophis was determined to make things better for the declining region's Smethyng populace. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse. With Gophis gone, and the Qalos Loyalists taking control of the city, much of the population is under strict watch, imprisonment or displacement to different regions. Liburne watched as the city she called home for many years became a prison for its families.
The Temple-Forge was decomissioned, and was ordered to melt all of its Birthblades. The memories of the fallen will only be grieved and honored silently. Anyone known to resist or conspire against the Iloutou governance will be dispatched in one way or another.
The Caretaker rested within the underground section of the city, in a family-owned tavern that she frequented many years ago. She comforted the younger blades and helped with delivering goods to different portions of the underground before departing the next day at sunrise.
Liburne knew that her work will likely never be over. But perhaps one day, it will all be worth it, and a day will come when no Smethyng has to suffer.

Steni Evia

Steni Evia
Tumblr media
The mountain “diamond” of Central Evia Built on the outskirts of Dirfyos, the highest mountain of Evia, Steni is one of the most beautiful villages on the island and the starting point of many mountain excursions. The picturesque village of Kefalochori stretches at an altitude of 450 meters and consists of three settlements: Ano and Kato Steni and the now abandoned settlement of Pyrgos, also known as Skounderi. The area is verdant, with a clean atmosphere and springs with gurgling water coming down from the mountain running literally everywhere, creating a refreshing sense of well-being that only mountain villages can offer.
The water wealth of the Strait has inspired many legends about fairies and elves, and, if you are lucky, you will hear the elders of the village telling them in the cafes. The locals have other stories to tell you from the legendary mountain of Dirfyos, while they boast about the fact that their village, which during the Ottoman period was called Kleisoura, was never trampled by the Turks and was a stronghold of boatmen and thieves.
The proximity to the mountain range of Dirfyos has made the village a pole of attraction for nature lovers from all over the world, every season, while the short distance from Chalkida has turned it into a popular destination even for one-day getaways. In the village there are rooms for rent and some elegant guesthouses, as well as cafes and bars in the central paved square with plane trees and mulberries. In terms of food, note that the area is famous for its excellent locally produced meats and mushrooms – so vegetarians will not complain either.
In the kingdom of water and green
The villages around Steni are beautiful, with lush vegetation and lots of water, so it is worth visiting. The Kambia , with its cavernous chapel of Agia Kyriaki, built on the side of Mega Longos and near the canyon Chavou. Although small, the village is tidy. Do not forget to buy local fava beans and visit the abandoned settlement of Kato Kambia with houses dating back up to 300 years ago. Crossing the forest of Steni to Chiliadou you will reach Stropones . The traditional village is amphitheatrically built, while the terraces with the crops make an impression. Continuing on the same road you meet Metochi, which stretches between the mountains Mesovouni and Skotini, and facing the mountain range of Dirfyos. Its inhabitants are mainly cattle breeders, so get excellent cheese products but also the famous cherries in Evia, if it is their season.
Sights not to be missed
Steni Aesthetic Forest: The Steni Aesthetic Forest stretches on the southern slope of Mount Dirfis near Steni. It is one of the 19 aesthetic forests of Greece and is included in the European ecological network Natura. The forest has an area of 500 hectares and is one of the most enchanting areas of the country and a pole of attraction for nature lovers from all over the world every season. The natural environment will take your breath away: streams, gorges, different species of trees and plants, small wild animals and rare birds compose a paradise landscape.
Dirfyos Mountain Refuge: Dirfyos Mountain Refuge (or “Michalis Nikolaou” Refuge) is located in Leiri, at an altitude of 1,120 meters. The shelter has unrestricted views from the Evian Gulf to the Aegean Sea, while on days when the atmosphere is clear you can even see the Sporades. It has relatively modern equipment, 50 beds and can accommodate 45 people. The shelter belongs to the Hellenic Mountaineering Association of Chalkida (EOS), which manages it. Church of Agia Kyriaki: Built in the village of Kampia, in a beautiful location full of running water and plane trees, the small church will impress you with its unpretentious beauty. The temple rests on a rock located above the cave, in which, according to legend, the locals found the icon of Holy Sunday. Its interior is more reminiscent of a cave than a classic church, creating an all-encompassing and at the same time evocative atmosphere. Suggestions for activities The area is a “paradise” for mountain sports enthusiasts, giving opportunities for activities of varying difficulty, ranging from amateurs and beginners to experienced climbers and climbers aiming for 1,743 meters and the top of Dirfyos. So, get ready for mountain excursions, as the Aesthetic Forest of Steni and Mount Dirfis are suitable for walking, hiking, mountaineering and climbing, as there are climbing fields at Karaouli (Dirfis), in Xerovouni and in Karovia. The area is also a favorite of mountain bikers, with the Big Bear route being extremely popular, while trail running enthusiasts can try their hand at the Dirfys Marathon mountain road race.
Steni Evias -The most beautiful village of Evia
