I think one thing that maybe LU needs to do more as a fandom is encourage the people who actually make things that you enjoy.

It's easy to bitch about all the things you don't like and while maybe it is cathartic to do so, I don't think as a whole it's particularly helpful to just dwell on what other people are doing wrong. You just have no control over that. You can make suggestions and hope people pick up on it or you can make specific criticisms to those who are open to it but ultimately, you can't force someone to do something.

I just don't think the solution is to make people feel bad about their work. That just makes them give up before they have the opportunity to improve.

This is why I always suggest being the change you want to see and to write or draw whatever makes you happy. We can also encourage other people who do make the things we do enjoy. Let them know you appreciate it.

Do what makes you happy and ignore what doesn't. It's nicer that way.

okay so i watched all eight episodes of 1899 in one go on monday and i cannot stop Having Thoughts. quite honestly it is the most superbly executed narrative i've ever encountered outside of literature. the sheer thematic scope and complexity is breathtaking. THEY WROTE A GREEK TRAGEDY about all my favourite things and it begins with an emily dickinson poem. !!! the universe was aiming its arrow right at my brain with this one.

(so of course it wasn't renewed. given that la révolution also wasn't renewed, i'm forced to conclude that tptb at netflix have something against thoughtful and nuanced excellence in storytelling.)

this is one of those times i especially miss metafandom because i'm sure there've been discussions about everything my brain is yelling at me but how the hell does one find the good shit anymore? or even the bad shit, for that matter. so here you go, tumblr frēonds, have yet another brain dump that nobody asked for or cares about.

now let's talk ancient greek references!

[1] the names of both ships come from ancient greek mythology: prometheus stole fire from the gods to give to humans and was sentenced to eternal punishment; kérberos (or cerberus) was the multi-headed dog who guarded the gates of the underworld to prevent the dead from leaving.

[2] in ancient greek philosophy, there were four classical elements; this concept was taken up in western alchemy, which made a hobby out of giving everything a glyph or symbol. the symbols of the four elements are triangles:

🜂 = fire 🜄 = water 🜁 = air 🜃 = earth

[3] it's been four months since the prometheus went missing. what, i wondered, is the significance of the number 4? in greek numerals 4 is represented as Δ´. oh, look, a triangle. and what's a triangle in three-dimensional space? a pyramid. and what's a pyramid geometrically speaking? a tetrahedron! which has 4 faces and 4 vertices. it's also the smallest possible platonic solid and plato associated it with the element fire. i don't know enough about geometry or philosophy to take these associations any further, but, as shakespeare would say, come the futtock on. this level of detail is RIDICULOUS and EVERYTHING TO ME.

“Everyone believes Bruce Wayne is dating Batman” when he already has his Brucie persona down pat is Prep X Goth; Himbo X Detective. Cares Deeply for This City X Cares Deeply for This City. The outgoing, social one and the Batman one. 

As we’ve already discussed, Bruce in The Batman 2022 does not yet have a Brucie persona built, so “Everyone believes Bruce Wayne is dating Batman” is Goth X Goth. It’s Agoraphobe X Vampire. The most socially anxious person you’ve ever met and the Batman one. 

As such, jokes must be adjusted for this subniche. 

Brucie Wayne is a willing Rapunzel figure, kept locked in the top of a tower and surrounded by riches and dark memories, choked by ghosts and blind to the world outside of him. Batman is a creature tapping on his penthouse window, the thing that enters and says, “I sense in you the same inhuman heart. You died long ago. You fear the sunlight. I’ve never before found someone like me."  <-That’s the state of Bruce Wayne/Batman fanfic in Battinson’s universe. 

They’re writing about Bruce Wayne going to Park Row to leave a single rose on the spot his parents died on the anniversary of the night, getting held at gunpoint there all over again in cruel irony, and being rescued by The Batman; he’s gone nonverbal due to the flashbacks, but The Batman also doesn’t speak. They just make super intense and vulnerable eye contact, and The Batman nods at him over his shoulder and disappears into the night. The rose has been trampled in the fight. Only once he’s alone does Bruce Wayne drop to his knees, covers his mouth, and sob. This is the first chapter of a fic a Gothamite plans on being at least ten chapters but the author abandons it after four

Apparently I'm not done with the negative comments because there is one thing that I think is actually kind of interesting - the vast majority of complaints haven't changed no matter how many times that sort of conversation pops up.

Why are the complaints still overall the same even after some years have passed?

Is it because the headcanons and tropes that people bring up the most are otherwise pretty well liked? Is it because we as a fandom have a hard time accepting change? Are there people out there who maybe want to change things up a bit but don't know how to? Do people need pointers on where to go for information on games they don't have access to?

I'm very much part of the 'make more of you want to see crowd' because you can't control anybody else and I still stand by the fact that people should encourage writers and fanfic writers they do like. However, I do wonder if people need more guidance and resources that as a fandom we could help out with.

Note: please don't just leave trope and headcanon complaints here because that's not what this post is about. The repeated complaints are a symptom and I'm interested in discussing possible causes. If I can possibly provide help in some way, I would like to try to.

Having watched thru to the end of Hawaii Five O, I immediately ran to read all the fix-it’s and post-22 stories I could find. Still reading them.

And I’m thinking a lot about this H5O fandom (to which I came too late) and open vs closed canon fandoms.

Hmm. See, I get that fans go where the fannish energy is. But I hope fans who moved elsewhere get what a gift we got at the end of Five-O. Yes, Peter Lenkov is a putz in every way. But his bid to throw Steve and Catherine together on that plane was seriously awkward. And fans have written stories highlighting why that is. Clearly, Cole contacted Catherine re the cipher and told her about Steve’s plans. But, while Cole might not have known better, she sure should have. And her showing up makes her look so much more like Doris.

Now, if Steve had called Cath first, I might have believed the two might be okay together. But.. there was nothing there—no indication at all that Steve was pining for her while she was gone on her mission. And that handholding? Nothing compared to the hospital scene.

ETA: and the dialogue on the plane? Very, very odd. And awkward.

So… closed canon means there’s nothing Lenkov can do to eff things up further. The McDanno playground is ours, people!

soooo I assume you want the story of why I consume spn fandom content but have never seen the show.

well I’ve been on tumblr since 2015 so the effects of superwholock haven’t been lost on me. i did watch sherlock, i knew what the mishapocalypse was early on, i argued with my spn-watching friends about queerbaiting in like 2017, etc etc. and of course i was there for November 5th and I know the whole story behind that. i also watch Sarah Z for some of the context I missed

but November 5th 2020 is what inspired my friend/mutual shanti @transsexualbloodlust to get back on tumblr! we’ve met through a high school mock government program but haven’t seen one another irl since early 2020. we’re also in a group chat together with other people from that program who talk a lot of politics.

anyway. Nov 5th rolls around and everything is fucking chaos. our gc is going insane over bleorgia and the putin rumors, but then 5x18 drops and i think (?) shanti mentioned it to the chat as everything else was going on. i, being on tumblr, knew exactly what they were talking about because it was on my dashboard.

flash forward a bit and shanti fully rejoined the fandom and tumblr after being largely inactive on it and was almost exclusively on spn tumblr. we became mutuals and i’ve gotten daily hordes of spn on my dash ever since. so I’ve seen the valentines day celebrations, the 1 year anniversary, the 100k destiel fics on ao3 celebration, misha “coming out,” mostly everything since Nov 5th!

of all the fandoms to consume solely secondhand i think spn is def one of the best ones :)

hunting through my fandom journal for something completely unrelated, i came upon a post from 2009 that amused me greatly because it might as well have blinky text announcing MA field of study detected! somebody said they thought ‘dollhouse’ was postmodernist and i sidled into the conversation citing lyotard like the nerd that i am. :D :D :D

considering that lyotard's definition of postmodern is incredulity of metanarratives, and fairy/folk tales are some of the oldest metanarratives around, i'm not sure how a show that is consciously enacting fairytale tropes can be considered postmodern. unless its use of those tropes is parodic in that it's inhabiting as well as critiquing them. which i'd be very surprised to see argued about dollhouse, given its sort of self-conscious ponderousness.
