Exploring the possibilities of WHICH characters I would use to write a self-indulgent “dumped on a planet without any other people and have to figure out how to build a life there” story.

Starting with digging through my various Wynn-based AUs.

Considering the potential of having the full cast of Wynn and her lovers and other family except... none of them are from the same universe so they all know each other, but they don’t know THIS each other.

I would definitely have to intentionally pick one of the less-strong Wynns because um. In some of these timelines she literally becomes a dimension-hopping god so... that would hamper my ability to force them to stay where I put them? She’d just... take everyone home? And maybe “finding everyone’s home dimensions and taking them back” could be a fun episodic adventure of its own, but it’s not the one I’m trying to write here. So, yeah. A Wynn that has not learned how to travel between worlds yet. Which nixes the majority of Minecraftia-based Wynns that are post-dragon fight.

I’ll also dig through much older OCs and fandoms I’ve played with.

I’m selecting here for ease of writing and fun I’d have putting them in this situation. In a story with a different goal, I’d select for shipping compatibility. Or conflict points that would make for fun drama. But I just want this to be an easy story to enjoy writing, so that’s a major selection criteria.

It’s going to take some work just picking the Wynnverse characters though because seriously. So many AU branches forking off and forking off into spiraling fractal patterns.

Wynn could be a mage, a werewolf, a werewolf-mage, an FMA-style alchemist, a punk city girl who technically could learn magic but never bothered, a cross-dimensional demonic monster deer, and that’s just the ones I can recall off the top of my head.

Do I bring in Rythian from Yogscast fandom? He exists in a lot of her timelines, though I don’t focus as much on him any more because I’m having way more fun with Wolfwood. There’s the Rythian from the Minecraftia timeline. The FMA one we ended up nixing from the final fic plans but technically he’s still out there in that universe. The mer AU one is probably one of the more boring ones but he’d be useful in a fresh colony because he knows a lot of handy skills like knot-tying and weaving fishing nets and more. In the Soul-Eater AU he can turn into a sword.

Of course there has to be a Wolfwood but do I yank him straight off Gunsmoke or do I take one of Wynn’s? Countless werewolf Wolfwoods (we have MULTIPLE were AUs for him). The mer AU where he’s a merfolk could be hard because unless it’s late in the plotline he doesn’t have access to legs. The naga AU doesn’t have legs either but his land movement is considerably better. There’s the AU where he’s a biblical demon escaped from Hell and so appreciative of being free he’ll do anything you ask if you won’t send him back. God I love collecting new Wolfwoods so much. Honestly maybe I’ll throw two of them in there. Why not? This is for ME.

What about Roy Mustang? Not as many of those as Wolfwoods, but there’s still a selection to choose from. Mostly FMA versions but there’s also the recent one we were talking about where he’s the head of the town guard when this lady comes through with here werewolf boyfriend and an actual pack of wild wolves who think she’s family and the pack alpha. Clearly his life isn’t hard enough without forced dimension travel and stranding with the dregs of my OC files.

Wynn’s ex-girlfriend Daphne who, in her most-canon timelines, became a lich after they broke up? In her most-canon timelines she’s also trapped in a small subsection of a fae dimension so being granted the full roam of a whole planet would kind of be setting her free. She is evil, for the record. But like, a small evil. I need to do more with her.

Trevor is usually more a mascot than a character with major personal motivations. Some AUs I just make him the dog because it’s an easy way of having him there without bothering to give him any plot agency. The City AU probably has the version with the most personal and plot agency. On the other hand throwing the version of him in that’s a creeper technomage with a shard of demon inside him would fucking TERRIFY any other characters who knew what that meant. ...and then he’d terrify everyone else because he’s a technomage with no instinct for self preservation. Not hyperbole: he does not have the same instincts as humans and will not consider his own safety when making decisions unless reminded to.

How about Lupin Dawnstrider-Wolfwood, the son that pops up when we ship Wynn and Wolfwood (often) and they are able to have him (not always the case. Sometimes Wolfwood is trans or otherwise sterile/not capable of siring a son on Wynn). A very large and very sweet man with some limited magical abilities but who prefers to do carpentry and goof off in the woods with his girlfriend--

Bridget [unknown]. A transgirl who is a big burly blacksmith who I can feel the character of in my head, but struggle to describe what she’s like now that I’m putting words down in a line. Hm. Need to write more with her to better explore her. This could be an opportunity to get to know her better. I’ll have to consider that. Also, a blacksmith would be handy to have around. Even through her preference of work is pretty, decorative things, she does know how to make basic tools. She tends to gift Lupin hand-made knives for his birthdays.

Side note: One of the fun things for me about the Dawnstrider family is Wynn (6′ ish tall woman, broad) + Wolfwood (6′ ish tall man, broad) + Rythian (6 ‘1/2 ish tall man, stick-like) + Lupin (inherited tall and broad from both parents) + Bridget (tall burly transwoman fits right in visually with the rest of the family) So like, it’s this whole family of people who look like they could wrestle bears on a mountain except this one lightning pole with a face sticking up in the middle. (Wynn being a tall and wide broad-shouldered cis woman makes Bridget feels so much better about the way she looks).

Anyway. Back to what I was on before.

Though actually, I think I’m running out of steam for the moment so I guess I’ll go back to digging through my pet character drawer and making plans.

There will ABSOLUTELY be more excited flailing in this space, so stay tuned if that sounds interesting. If it doesn’t... well, brace yourself or step aside, ‘cause it’s coming anyway.

Chinese whooped my ass so have my Merfolk Roy design with some merfolk lore

Merfolk do not have reproductive organs assigned at birth. They develop the organs as needed

As such, gender identity is almost completely based off of how the merfolk presents themselves.

There are 4 gender identities that merfolk typically slot into: obwai(neutral), gokne(assertive), bwone(passive), and guwai(defensive) (these are all rough translations from the older variations of the language)

Merfolk's bioluminescence is an easy tell for their overall health. The less energy they have, the dimmer they glow. If the merfolk is malnourished and unhealthy enough, they won't glow at all.

Roy can and will eat you.

Roy's hair isn't greasy anymore since its in the water 24/7 but it looks greasy af when he's above water

He dove underwater before she had the chance to reply, squeezing his eyes shut and waiting for his heart to calm itself. The hell was his problem? He never let his emotions get the best of him, but it wasn’t his fault Winry was just so… Winry.

He was used to always relying on his own abilities, hoping that at least he’d done enough to give Al the life he deserved. To hear that he’d actually had a positive influence on someone else was just… strange.

Surprisingly, he didn’t mind the feeling.

He opened his eyes to Winry in front of him, bubbles escaping her mouth as she attempted to giggle. She placed her hand in his and pulled him ahead, swimming back to the shore.

He followed.

Never have you ever written a scifi AU? Or something involving merfolk?

i have in fact written both of these! :3

ruin the sky was my...very short one-shot snippet of a scifi au that i wrote for roy/ed week last year

...and the dragon scars series is technically part scifi au, but it’s more science fantasy. or honestly just kind of epic crack fic. one day i may even write the next part of it.

(i don’t think i ever plotted out a scifi au for ffxv but i’ve had an urge to do one basically since i got into the fandom. ONE DAY. no fucking idea what i’d do with it though. i just want the boys to be in space.)

on the edge of summer is an ffxv merfolk au, starring one of my many crackpairs. sadly, you are not in that fandom. um. idk if i’d ever do one for fma, tbh. i’m honestly not a big fan of merfolk au in general, but if i DID do a roy/ed one it’d probably either be a little mermaid thing or something with sirens. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm making a language for this, as anyone who knows me would suspect.

Roy and Maes are "ogdai'n" to Ed and Al.

Ogdai: Ogdai'n are designated caregivers assigned by parents to other merfolk. If the parents pass away or no longer wish to care for their children, the children are handed off to the ogdai'n. Typically, parents will assign one ogdai per child. Humans often translate ogdai'n to godparents, though there are differences to their roles in the child's life.

In turn, the children of an ogdai are called ogna'n

Hohenheim approached Roy and Maes about being the ogdai'n to his children 4 years after they were born, which is unusually late.

3 months later he left.

Winry finds Ed sitting in his designated pond after moving to Rush Valley to get an apprenticeship in automail.

She has become a rather unlikely ogdai.

Few notable things about this Rai Verified FMA Mermaid AU Trash:

Mermaids are naturally deep sea creatures

Naturally they glow

Alchemy is nixed

As of right now: Roy, Ed, Al, Hughes, Gracia, Hohenheim, and Trisha are Mermaids and Winry, Pinako, Ling, Lan Fan, Riza, and Kimblee are human.

Ed is missing his arm and the tip of his tail

Ed is also stuck in a pond so he's short.

Hohenheim basically gave his kids to Roy

Man. This is a terrible time for it because my mental health took a major blow recently and my brain’s lifting power is like 2lbs right now but. I need to get back to writing all my silly fun OC-insert fics with Wynn throwing into any canon I think she’d be fun in. Some brief details about Wynn: A magic user who specializes in and has a deep magical connection with plants. Loves to travel and make friends and feels restless if she settles down for too long. Lives in the woods more than in towns. Looks a lot like Ed Eric from FMA if he was female and around 6′ tall, down to taste for red coats (eyes are green instead of gold though). Age varies by AU. Distrusts authority and resents being controlled. Favored weapon is a scythe but actual weapon varies by AU. Her default setting is Modded Minecraft (with crossovers with FMA and Trigun), but there’s a bunch of original setting versions for her, too. -- The “bookverse”, a “off-brand European” setting fantasy with demons (otherworldly monstrosities) and undead (one of whom is her ex girlfriend) and an evil dragon. Named because it’s the version I’m most likely to be able to write and turn into a saleable book. This and the Minecraft version are the “main” versions of Wynn from which we tend to start crossovers. -- The “City AU”, a mixed modernish fantasy setting where we stole the abandoned original Zootopia idea of shock-collars on the “dangerous” types of magic users and Wynn is part of a social movement to stop enforcing collar wearing. -- The mer au. Low magic setting around the industrial age (ambiguous). Wynn is out on a fishing trip with her husband and meets and befriends a starving merman who gets tangled in their fishing net. She then gets dragged into the attention of an anti-human merfolk gang. -- The villain AU. Very cliche off-brand European fantasy where Wynn is one of the generals in the army of her adoptive father who is the main villain of the plot. Her love interest is the destined hero prophecied to save his homeland from destruction. ...turns out it’s by falling in love with her and turning her and her army against her father. Special note: If I talk about “mage Wynn” I almost always mean either “Minecraftia-verse” or “Book-verse”. They have a lot in common and can sometimes be interchangeable depending on context. And with all those original AUs you probably won’t be shocked to find there’s some fandom AUs: -- Reaperverse. An FMA au that actually has a fic started for it. Be Thou For the People. Wynn is a State Alchemist called The Reaping Alchemist, who works in agricultural science. She gets sucked into the shenanigans of the Brotherhood/manga plot but like, on the backend where Roy is not in the front with Ed and co. ---- Chimera AU. AU of Reaperverse. The chimera labs made way more human chimera than in canon and in fact, Roy is a secret chimera. Wynn and her sister Alphys are given their first assignment outside the labs, and Wynn is meant to become a State Alchemist but fails, and Roy takes her in as an apprentice in a bid to block the labs from taking her back as a failure. ---- War AU. AU of Reaperverse. Wynn is born earlier and is a contemporary with Roy and ends up also apprenticed to Berthold but is judged unsuitable for learning Flame Alchemy. Ends up in Ishval with Roy and starts up a romance with him after. Despite being a “trunk” AU, this is more notable for its sub AUs and we rarely discuss the main version any more. -- Soul Eater AU. Wynn and her boyfriend (who’s her weapon (sword)) and her ex girlfriend are in the year above Maka. Wynn is a two-star Meister and she’s a witch’s soul away from creating a death scythe and it’s driving her absolutely batty. I have a lot of Soul Eater still to watch so this AU is subject to a lot of change as I learn more about the plot and setting. -- D.Gray-man. This one is still pretty new and I don’t recall all the special terms but Wynn is one of the Innocence-wielding Akuma fighters and a lot of what she’s up to that we talk about takes place a bit before and during the first part of the manga plot. I’ve read through 199 so this is another AU subject to change as I learn more about canon. Then there’s the crossovers. -- Hollow Knight. MC mage Wynn falls through the void after fighting the Minecraft dragon and ends up falling OUT of the void in Hollow Knight, down in the Ancient Basin. She then has to find her way through Deepnest, and the Queen’s Gardens, and then I petered out of steam before she crossed paths with the knight as it went through the plot of the game. -- Kingdom Hearts. We haven’t touched this AU in a while and I forgot a lot of the details but I just want to mention that it is, in fact, a thing. Mary got me sucked into KH and we’re going to make it our OC’s problem. -- Avatar: The Last Airbender (Embers). Mage Wynn falls through the void and ends up getting noticed as she passes by a spiritual realm where the great spirits grab her with the idea of using her as a tool to help untangle a mess of fate that they’re dealing with. They already have pieces in place, but another will bent to the cause can’t hurt, right? This isn’t canon Avatar, though. This is set in Embers, by Vathara. Zuko has healing fire and [spoilers]. And Wynn is granted the ability to bend in ADDITION to her magic as she’s dropped into the middle of Ba Sing Se on the very night Zuko is granted a very special apprenticeship. THIS one is the reason I’m writing this post right now. Because I am getting the urge to return to this AU, redo the parts I’ve already written, and take this story further. So I’ll see if I can follow through on that desire because dang it. I do miss writing. For the record Every. Single. One. of those AUs have variations where this or that happens differently, and many of them have full sub-AUs. For example, both mage Wynns (MC and book) have werewolf AUs where one of more of the main characters get werewolves curses and have to do a ritual to gain control of the curse. In the latest version we discussed, they found a whole village of secret werewolves who helped them and they ended up joining that village and just becoming part of the extended pack. The War AU has basically be overshadowed by its sub AUs and we only bring it up in the context of those sub AUs or for making a new one. Many of the AUs also have “angel” variants which is a whole other post. ...I’m going to be talking about this A LOT more.
