Cheap Adventures & Elusive Prey

Picture it, 2016, a couple of poor young people move in together just starting out our independent, grown up (or so we thought) lives and a fish we didn't know existed.

We were both working blue collar jobs and not making a lot, but also putting a teenager (my cousin) through school, including JROTC and FFA . Money was tight and we didn't have a lot extra to go out and do your typical fun things like movies or eating out. What we ended up doing in most of our free time was riding dirt roads on our way home from work. Ths evolved into stopping at every creek along the way to see if we could catch fish. You wouldn't catch us without fishing poles in the vehicle that summer!

And there we discovered one of our favorite things to do. Even now, eight years later and a lot better off you can still catch us creek fishing multiple times a year, especially in the summer. Fishing was fairly cheap for us to do and it was always so much fun because you never knew what you would catch. And finding new fishing spots was a challenge when we had the extra gas to ride around.

Several weeks into our fishing adventures I was talking to a coworker about some of our fishing experiences and he asked me if we had caught any Redfin Pike. I had never heard of such a fish so I was intrigued and asked him what it was and why they were special. According to him, Redfin Pike is a special kind of creek fish that is really hard to catch. They are elusive and don't bite just anything that drops into the water, they are also big fighters when you hook them despite being a small fish. They only get about 12 inches long. According to my coworker and other old timers I have spoken to apparently they are quite good to eat, talked about as a "chicken of the creek". He talked about them like they were almost a mythical fish. A unicorn, so to speak.

Part of what makes them hard to find is that they only thrive in running water, so many of the streams and creeks they used to flourish in have dried up or have been redirected to the point that they don't flow enough to be a suitable habitat for Redfin Pike.

My coworker also told me that they were bloodthirsty fish and that to catch them you would want to use a lure or other bait with red on it to resemble an open wound.

That was all it took, we were on a mission. A mission to find a unicorn. I mean, a Redfin Pike.

Armed with our favorite fishing gear and some new things we splurged on for this special fish, we headed out to some of our favorite spots. It took us a few weeks but eventually we did find a good fishing hole that was, if not teeming, then definitly well stocked with Redfn Pike.

What surprised us though is that we did not catch the first ones off anything red as we had been hearing that Pike loved. We caught the first ones on a blue crappie grub while we were trying to catch Warmouths at a creek that ran through a friend's property. We were so surprised that it took us a minute to realize that we had finally caught a Redfin Pike!

They were everything we had been told and so much fun to catch. We went to that same fishing spot several days later and were able to catch a few more on a lure that is a favorite of my husband's, he has caught everything from Largemouth Bass to tiny Breem, and yes, Redfin Pike.

Picture below of my husband, so proud of catching a fish we had spent weeks trying to find, and our biggest catch to date.

To this day we haven't eaten one of these so I can't speak for the taste but they are every bit as fun to catch as they are reputed to be. If you ever have the opportunity to fish in a creek in Georgia, be sure to keep an eye out for our elusive friend the Redfin Pike.

Does ice fishing give you the same vibe as fishing in the summer?

I've been fishing but nothing special and not in winter

If fishing for you is nothing special and lackluster I promise you that you'll hate ice fishing. Just the way the question is asked leads me to this.

Here is the secret to fishing (all tumblr world perks ears) it's about catching fish... But... It's not about catching fish.

Whether you sit in a lawn chair or on a boat it's about the nature.

It's the view and the wind, the trees and the sky, it's the ability to be in it.... Now...maybe some only fish in busy, highways of water... Then yes it's a job or chore.

I am blessed to have about 20 lakes and 3 rivers within an hour of me. I have places no phone reception, no car noise, no houses on the lake, you feel pulled out of time. THAT'S why I fish. Now.... When you have a Mepp 5 on and a bass slams it deep from below, the water explodes and this dude fights with all it's fury.... It's addictive as fuck, your heart pounds, it never gets old feeling a fish hook on.

To be clear unless the fish is wounded, I catch and release.

Fishing isn't putting rod in and instant fish. Ice fishing is slowed down by a billion... But.... It's about getting out, getting together, snacks, chatting and yes... Bringing up a fish and releasing.

2022 Trout Year in Review

2022 was a good year for trout fishing. I kept up the overnight trips to favorite spots in Wisconsin that I started during the pandemic and got back out fishing in several other states including North Carolina, Michigan, and California. And I experienced my first fly-in fishing trip to Ontario (for walleye and pike).

I went on my first solo backpacking trip since before covid, and also backpacked with friends in one of my favorite spots, Desolation Wilderness.

The early season was fun, with some angling in the snow and an April trip to the Driftless where I experienced all kinds of weather. Through the year I managed to pack in 32 trips and caught 235 trout with just one skunk.

As usual, I used my hand made spinners exclusively, mostly in silver. Recipes for my spinners can be found at http://www.angelfire.com/folk/lwfish/pdfs/LureRecipe.pdf  A bigger version modeled after a Mepp’s #3 proved quite effective for walleyes and northerns on my trip to Canada.

Stats since I started trout fishing 16 years ago are tabulated below. This year, I caught 195 brown trout, 31 brookies, and 9 rainbows. 2022: 32 trips, 1 skunk, 235 fish 2021: 31 trips, 2 skunks, 227 fish 2020: 23 trips, 2 skunks, 135 fish 2019: 47 trips, 0 skunks, 361 fish 2018: 43 trips, 0 skunks, 369 fish 2017: 51 trips, 1 skunk, 469 fish 2016: 43 trips, 1 skunk, 411 fish 2015: 36 trips, 3 skunks,194 fish 2014: 35 trips, 3 skunks, 230 fish 2013: 38 trips, 3 skunks, 245 fish 2012: 36 trips, 1 skunk, 253 fish 2011: 27 trips, 0 skunks, 216 fish 2010: 36 trips, 8 skunks, 168 fish 2009: 36 trips, 3 skunks, 167 fish 2008: 33 trips, 5 skunks, 135 fish 2007: 23 trips, 1 skunk, 80 fish 2006: 1 trip, 0 skunks, 1 fish

Yes, indulging in Dale is a fashion/make up guru head canon in this drabble.

A mission gone wrong and the Rescue Rangers found themselves captured by Fat Cat's minions. Tied up, they awaited Fat Cat. Wart and Mepp meanwhile decided to pass the time by making fun of Mole.

"Mole looks like the ugly truck backed into his face." Wart said.

"Hey!" Mole cried. "It wasn't the ugly truck! ... I don't think." 

Wart and Mepp started to laugh. Mole pouted and crossed his arms.

What drove Dale to start a conversation at this point may had well been the boredom out of waiting. Even when doom was involved, waiting was boring.

"Oh, I actually think that you're not that ugly. If you tried some pink with your look, it would bring out your eyes." Dale said.

Mole looked to Dale in astonishment. Not only actually kind words but from the enemy.

"You really think so?" Mole asked.

Chip glared at Dale.

"Dale you dummy! No make up tips to the bad guys!" Chip shouted.

"Right, we don't want them looking better then we do." Monty said.

"That's true.." Dale said.

"What about me?" asked Mepp asked.

"Sorry, my services are now closed." Dale said.

"That's not fair!" whined the cat.

Wart rolled his eyes, his arms crossed at this ridiculousness.

"Why do you even care. As if the chipmunk actually has real fashion sense. Do you see his shirt?" Wart said.

Dale gave a offended gasp.

"Oh, that's rich coming from you." Dale said.

"Are we really having this conversation?" Chip asked.

He was ignored, Wart glaring at Dale.

"What about me?" Wart asked, sounding on the edge of offended.

Dale looked at Wart, tilting his head for a moment.

"Inspector Gadget called. He wants his hat and coat back." Dale said.

Wart lunged for Dale. The chaos that broke out after that ended with the Rangers getting free from their bonds.

"Ohhh, Fat Cat is going to be so mad at us." Mepp groaned.

"I blame Mole." Wart said.

"Me!? You're the one who attacked them and got them free." Mole said.

"He's actually right." Mepp said.

Wart turned on Mepp, pointing at the cat.

"Whose side are you on?" Wart cried.

"The one that gets me in less trouble." Mepp said.

The squabble continued. Enough that it was starting to get awkward. 

"I think we should go." Monty said.

"I agree." Gadget said.

As the Rangers headed out, Dale was stopped by a hand on his shoulder. He whirled around to see Mole.

"Do you really think pink would bring out my eyes?" Mole asked with earnest. 

Dale smiled.

"I really do. Try it." Dale said.

Mole nodded.

"I think I will." Mole said.

Removing his hand from Dale's shoulder he walked back over to the squabble that was turning into a fist fight, leaving the rangers to leave.

Красоты нашей необъятной весьма необычны. Весна во всей красе. Ярко. Красочно. Эффектно. Рыбку увидели. Стас увидел даже не одну, а ещё и судака, который благополучно уплыл подрастать. Сегодня была цель опробовать огромные для наших краёв приманки. Но как сказали местные рыбаки, этот день был без особого клёва. И последнюю неделю берёт слабо. Единичные зубатые лягухи. Но приятно что размер радует. Если берёт, то стабильно 2+. Мелких нету. Ну или мелкая не попадается, неизвестно. Сегодня сработали приманки Relax king shad 5 и Bass 5. Палочка Norstream Absolut 10-35 с лёгкостью делала забросы пятидюймовых приманок за середину реки. Отдельное внимание хочу уделить крючкам фирмы Hanzo. Их остроту - просто нужно попробовать.
