Arranged marriage for the meme!

Yay! I don't have a vivid imagination for this trope, so more than half are cases where the arranged marriage is totally canon.

Thorn/Ophélie (La passe-miroir/The Mirror Visitor)

It's very classic arranged marriage (for supernatural reasons) turns into resentment that stops them from realizing the good things about the other turns into alliance turns into unspoken love (painful for the reader) and maybe more? It fully worked on me. I especially loved how the description of Thorn (the book is Ophélie PoV) turn from uncharitable descriptions of an average looking man to very horny descriptions of an average looking man.

If you don't know the series, I can advertise it more. It's good French fantasy.

2. Louis/Caesar (Kimi o Shinasenai tame no Monogatari)

Yeah I have at least one m/m canon arranged marriage, is a dystopian future where romantic partners and reproduction partners are totally disconnected. It's a painful case of arranged marriage with love only on one side, it's a mess and they don't make it work. I enjoyed it though. ^^

3. Xavin/Karolina (Runaways)

In the category: arranged marriage to end a war. This one starts with love only one one side (it helps that one of them was raised to see this marriage as a positive thing and the other never heard about it), but they make it work. For a while. Because they're separated because you can't get peace that easily. Not the main romance for Karolina, but my fave.

4. David/Josiane (L'homme qui rit)

This one has a creepy age difference, but the relationship is fun despite it. They're capricious nobility of the kind "we could have loved each other so much, but the fact that our parents decided this for us is totally ruining the concept". I have hope for them in the future.

5. MIlly/Lloyd (Code Geass)

They are a case who absolutely don't fall in love with each other and break the engagement. I think their personalities go well together, though, and that they could have been good friends if not for the "ugh" reaction of being arranged engaged.

6. Khonnen/Leah (The Dybbuk)

Tragic version! Their parents engaged them to each other before they were born, and because of this they feel drawn to each other (it's a world with magic) and fall in love. Leah's uncle has forgotten about the promise and wants his niece to marry a rich man. The boy dabbles in dark magic to get her anyway and dies, but his ghost is possessing her. It's absolutely not healthy. Still shipping it.

7. Philip/Elizabeth (The Americans)

Communist spies in the eighties who are technically work colleagues but have a marriage licence and actual children. It's a slow burn romance and I love it.

8. Eponine/Marius (Les Misérables)

This one is absolutely not canon! I don't know why, I came across the idea of Marius thinking he has to marry Eponine out of gratefulness for Thénardier saving his father, either because he's naive, or because Thénardier is manipulating him, and I thought it had potential for being absolutely awful (complimentary)!

9. Ciel/Elizabeth (Black Butler)

You know, they're cute (they're cousins but I don't care). As of recently in the manga it's more complicated than this, but if anything it made me ship it even more.

10. Twilight/Yor (Spy x Family)

Both got married to have a cover for their (opposite sides) spy activities. Neither knows about it. It's written as cute anyway, on the arranged marriage that becomes real side, with their common affection for their (arranged) daughter a big part of the feelings. It works for me.

Morgan - Brain. She’s a logical and pragmatic sort. She is pretty good at keeping a cool head and has a good poker face, which makes her look pleasant enough for the rest of the group to shove her up front as the mouthpiece most of the time. But generally if something is useful to her, she’ll put up with some indignities if it’ll benefit her in some way. Like as an example, when encountering Duegar slavers she won’t immediately murder them, but they’ll always end up dead eventually.

It’s also just harder for her to form meaningful attachments with people, She learns a lot about respecting boundaries during this story and why having such strong friendships and loves to come from this adventure means so much to her 🫠

Oxus - 100% ruled by gentle himbo energy. All emotion, all the time. Falls for every sob story and refuses rewards every chance he gets, gives away all their money, cries every time they kill someone and has to stop the party to administer a burial and final rites. Will wildshape into something small and hides when he gets yelled at by Lae’zel and Astarion.

He also becomes Astarion’s Silvanus appointed care worker, whether he likes it or not.

That's... a difference. The first list is pretty clear that I've done a lot of prompts with plenty of fluff, angst, and AUs. The second focuses in on those AUs. I do have a lot of non-searchable tags in the more recent offerings, which affects things. They're both pretty spot-on, though playing around with my filters brings surprising stuff in many of the categories.

I do not decide what I write. God decides what I write. Sometimes He leaves it to my brain. That's usually a disaster.

I love all my AUs what are you talking about...

If I had to pick one I think my favorite right now is a tie between little seagull, little seagull, where shall you go? and Adventures with the Denizens of 1000 Sunny Rd, just because they're both really fun for completely different reasons. One's just the Great Dilfening of Trafalgar Law in its varied forms and the other is Modern pseudo-Midwestern American AU w/Sunny as a sus af party house in rural suburbia that totally isn't based on my local metro area what are you talking about. Both torture Law though, and that's what counts. :D

42. Have you ever received a comment that particularly stood out to you for whatever reason?

A comment that stood out? Well, I think comments that stand out to me are usually the long ones, as well as the ones that end up in long-winded conversations and exchange of fandom squealing. While I've gotten some in recent years, I cannot express how it was very different back in the heyday of my years mainlining FFN. So, like, 2004-2010, I'll say. Those were really good days, and people loved commenting/reviewing! There were still lurkers, obviously, but there was way less commodification of fandom like we see now. It's definitely not a "fandom old yells at teens" thing because I know it's not necessarily fandom's fault for the shift and is instead the corporate end that has trained us (especially newer fans) to treat media and fandoms alike the same one would cheap paper towels, but that's not what fandom is, and oh would you look at that I strayed from the topic.

Last song: Colors by FLOW, because I am a weeb of a certain age but also I do genuinely like quite a few songs by them so there we are I love love love the piano house remix

Favorite color: ORANGE. It's not exactly a color I'd do a lot with, but I absolutely adore that bright, obnoxious, day-glo, road barrel orange. Something that a Dutch national sports team or a deer hunter would wear. I tend to like most colors though, yes even yellow, so any angst I might have otherwise over not being able to use my favorite color is usually rendered fairly moot.

Last tv show/movie: The last movie I watched was Godzilla Minus One, which is a well-acted, beautifully-made, wonderful period piece about war and the scars of soldiers (especially those who "weren't supposed to come back") and calling out the futility of the mindless subservience prevalent Japanese culture during the Pacific War when it is possible to choose life and fighting for actual causes and not thinking lives are as disposable as tissues... but also there's a giant glowing lizard that shoots pewpew lasers out its mouth being the nuke allegory that the Lord intended. I am already angry that this movie will not get the recognition it deserves because it's a fucking Godzilla movie but holy shit I was getting artsy film nerd on this thing you don't understandddd... it's one of the best movies I've seen all year and then some... it's that fucking good. I'm also gonna see The Boy and the Heron later and I'm already gearing up for it to lose Best Animated to something stupid like Wish or something good like Super Mario, which was good but I already know we're talking Miyazaki and there's no way it's better than that (note: we've had a really good year in animation so even if The Boy and the Heron loses there's still legitimate options).

Sweet/spicy/savory: All of them! It just depends on my mood. I do have a massive sweet tooth, but since I drink pop often enough there needs to be something to balance it out (sweets go with hot tea). Savory does well with that, as does spice for me. I've gotten better with spice the past few years, but I've always been better with it than some of the rest of my family.

Relationship status: Happily engaged, though with an end-date already set.

Last thing I googled searched: I think it was hook-and-eye closures, because I wanted to know if there were any mainstream alternative uses than bra clasps. It's mostly bra clasps. I made something up.

Current obsession: One Piece, clearly, but I also live for Witch Watch updates and I will not be over Godzilla Minus One for a long-ass time just a bit lower-key.

I try to reply to all of them, though sometimes I can't offer much more than a thank you.

5- What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

ooh, that might be difficult. Since one of my favorite things to write is 'death of an elf', but I always have in the back of my head that for 99% of these cases the elf in question will eventually be healed, reborn, and reunited, even if the fic ends on angst the knowledge that this isn't final lessens the angst, at least for me. But my other constant well into which I am dipping is Aegnor/Andreth, which has a less certain and far more distant proposed rebirth reunion. And Kinslaying from the Teleri perspective. In its own way, The Swanships has the most fridge-horror delayed angst ending because the fic is building up what these objects mean, their source of community and safety, and ends right before they are going to be permanently destroyed right when most needed. Of the various Tol-in-Gaurhoth fics, every single one ends on or right before the death of the focal character, so it's a tossup on which one is the angstiest. It's down to what flavor of death seems saddest, the futile hope of Pins, the anger of Filial Piety, the despair of Take Thy Brother's Hand and the mental break in Kingfisher... Or the Hithlum fics- the stuff with Mornacu is really angsty and the happy ending reunion more delayed than anybody but canon Aegnor/Andreth.

Let's take the cop-out and pick one of the Andreth fics, and tie it between The Ring and Blood on Bone for a Lover's Burial.

6- What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?

Okay so there are pure fluff fics that I've written. They exist!

But I think in the spirit of this question, for a single fic, it has to be Release from Bondage because the final chapters are all about how the horror of Angband is defeated and the main couple admit their feelings and get to now live in freedom and paradise. With the coda of Our Lady of Canine Compassion because what is happier than an abused dog warg also getting reborn and adopted into a happy home as a pampered toy dog named Cuddles

7- Do you write crossovers?

....YES and no. Fusions. feels like 50% of the time the fic is that variation of a crossover where the characters and/or plot or even just small details are directly inspired to the point of an AU, but these are never pure crossovers of canon interactions.

8- Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Got into an argument in the comments of one fic but never hate. At least not for the fics themselves.

9- Do you write smut?

Tiptoe around it and some very light smut in the finale for Release from Bondage. One day I'll copy over the smutty paragraphs to Ao3.

Then there's everything with "Cold/Baby Shower". Which never gets fully explicit but is overloaded with D/s vibes and is basically a porn with plot fic that censor blurs the actual porn. And Baby Shower is the "millisecond post-climax" fic.

10- Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of.

11- Have you ever had a fic translated?

Twice by the same person I think. Howl and Whatcha Gonna Call It? were both translated into Russian for two collections or challenges.

13- What's your all-time favorite ship?

Well, discounting original characters, looking at my fics it should be obvious that in canon it's Aegnor/Andreth, with some Theon/Jeyne

14- What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?

I tell myself that I'll finish or get to all the fics. For a long time Warpath home was one I wasn't sure about but now that I know how I want to expand out Faron's angle and tie into the Author Findis, it has a better chance.

OII is the one that I scream at myself for lost inspiration/drive to write and the one that will be most stubborn about because of the scope - esp because the parts I want to write about and the parts that need to be written/that readers want don't always align.

15- What are your writing strengths?

I think when I nail my descriptive prose it reals sells itself. And I usually find writing both action and dialogue to be easy.

16- What are your writing weaknesses?

It's hard for me to plot out and write multi-chaptered fic and commit to finishing those in a reasonable time frame. My sentence structures can get convoluted and dropping articles for clauses, some of which is reflective of my manner of speech which in itself is partially dependent on dialect - I know some features would be damn obvious if I was reading what I wrote out-loud and y'all heard that Texan drawl. Also my character voices and personalities aren't as distinctive as someone to whom that was their strength would be.

17- What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I dislike it if it's more than a phrase or two and if it's more than a sentence I start to dislike it, because it makes reading comprehension extremely difficult on the readers and ruins the flow. And the POV- if the character understands the second language they would be at least partially translating and if they don't they wouldn't discern the words. Better to describe the dialogue than transcribe it untranslated in the body of a fic. Written text in-universe I give more leeway. Authors' notes are an excellent place to put the untranslated text.

18- What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Fanfic? Tolkien

19- What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?

ASoIaF proper maybe, or Star Wars. Not just a fusion. Well, the ASoIaF would just be writing out that silly modern AU or maybe the Selyse constantly trying to assassinate Robert.

20- What's your favorite fic you've written?

Why were they smiling at him like that? Stop it -

He's trembling as he falls to his knees beside his fallen crush. The man he so loved. He's quick to cradle their head close to him, squeezing his eyes shut as tears sting the corner of his eyes. "Don't you fucking dare. Not when I, not when we-" A small hiccup as he clings to him. ( YOU DID THIS TO YOURSELF. )

| My character takes a fatal blow intended for your character. How does your character react?

Husk had to step in, he seen it before how Val could get with Angel and he couldn't help but wonder when Angel's luck would run out. Husk knows how Angel can push ones buttons he also knows Angel ain't one to take anyone's shit. That included Valentino, just another overlord on a power trip was how Husk saw that damn moth as well. One that loved to flaunt they basically owned Angel and could do whatever they wanted to them. Far as Val seemed sure of Angel's life was his. And that meant they could take it from them at any point as well.

Or so Val thought. Husk wasn't sure what Angel didn't do or even said that finally pushed that moth to just end Angel Dust with out a care for what Angel was worth. Maybe Angel finally succeed in becoming too broken for him even. Husk though? He really wanted to support Angel's quest to be redeemed. Once seeing they meant it and were putting in some effort on that. Husk didn't care about redemption for himself to far gone. But Angel? Angel he felt had it in him if not the least it would save Angel from the same.

So when he say that gun? he knew it was angel bullet inside the finely crafted weapon. Only so thoughtfully designed by Carmilla. And his body moved, before the trigger was even fully tugged back pushing Angel hard as hard as he could just so it wouldn't hit them only to get hit himself.

"Husk, what the actual ever loving FUCK- !"

Husk stumbled and his breath get hard to control, feeling over where the pain was the worst. He pulled his hand back to see the blood coating his paw. "Damn didn't know angel bullets would hurt worse." He manged a faint smirk towards Angel before his legs gave out. Dropping under his own weight.

"Husk"

Husk looked up towards Angel, hearing their voice. All he cared about was that they were able to stand. "Heh, better bit use this as an excuse to do some of thsr dumb shit again." Husk faintly threanted before he fully fell over his body had no strength in it. He recalled this feeling he knew it so well. Everything just slowly fading and slipping away. The pain slowly gone as well even. He was dying. A more permanent death this time around.

Hardly aware, when Angel picked up his head, he could barely even feel how soft the chest fur against his face felt. Letting his eyes just slowly come to a close for a moment. A low soft purr works out from the back of his thoart. "This is nicer than last time." So final in his wording he knows he won't pull through. But he wouldn't trade getting held by, his angel, like this in his final moments. Whatever happens to him next he hopes he gets to hold on to this single moment.

"Don't you fucking dare. Not when I, not when we-"

"Sorry kid," Husk manged to speak Husk knows as everything starts to just feel cold that well this was it. Part of him wonders what happens next? Dose he just fade away like nothing. Weird to think his thoughts will just stop. Maybe he can live in one forever though? That might be too pleasant an end for a sinner like himself though. Least he got to go out like this. "Ya know as corny as it gonna sound? I feel like a winner going out like this" His body grew limp, he wonders which breath will be the last now as he looks up at Angel, unsure why they look so sad right now. "So if I'm a winner now means ya gotta be one too alright?" He wants to at least use the last of the air in lungs for Angel. All his lasts he wants to all belong to them. His last words for Angel. His last breath to speak them. His last thoughts. Even the last few remaining beats of his heart.

All for Angel. His Angel.

"Ya gonna show 'em all that ya more than the porn star. Show them fuckers in heaven you really are an angel. Ya always were my Angel so I want everyone else to see that too." Husk confessed, wishing he could have said that sooner. Before he lets out one last content sigh. Everything slowly slipping away he could feel it he was dying. But that was okay. Because Angel was still living.

Trademark: Pining So Hard They Become Trees(tm)

Proud to be home to this particular trademark, my friend. Is it really pining if they aren't going so hard they can still long for each other while in each other's arms? I think no. XD

I could cite this entire chapter of Cantata for Pining So Hard They Become Trees, but I'll keep it to this bit, which is one of my favorites: ~

In the silence of space, the ‘Yang skips through firing lanes close enough to stick a knife in the enemy’s gut, the knife in this case being the GARDIAN lasers chewing away armor plating and shearing apart small enemy fighters that stray too close.

Ship-to-ship combat is an attrition of heat and numbers, and Kaidan has no control over any of it.

Not the moments of vertigo as the inertia dampeners temper the ‘Yang’s maneuvering burns, the intermittent shudder as the weapons systems find a target, not the slow, steady buildup of waste heat that will eventually force them to flee or cook within their own hull.

And not Shepard. The entire covert operation will play out on helmet cams and comm channels, with Kaidan as a witness. Shepard is nothing more than a pinprick of warmth, lost in the rage of heat playing out on sensors. Kaidan glues his eyes to that pinprick, heart in his throat as he waits to see if the Cannae’s GARDIAN lasers detect the infiltration team hidden in the heat signatures of the battle playing out around them.

It’s not until Shepard’s grav boots connect with the Cannae’s hull that the white drains from Kaidan’s knuckles.

But now that they’ve reached the target, there’s a new fear. Pendergrass hovers over Kaidan’s shoulder, chewing a hangnail as the N team hunts for explosives along the hijacked ship’s hull, because its captors would rather slag the whole thing than see it taken back.

Shepard finds the first bomb.

Pendergrass stops chewing and reviews the scans, walking Shepard through diffusing it, and every other one they find, while Kaidan listens in helpless silence until he’s forced to take another breath.

The comms erupt with gunfire when they breach the hull. Kaidan fixes his gaze on Shepard’s helmet cam, the visual slightly out of sync with the audio feed. They had no way to know how many enemies would be waiting on board, but four N6s led by the galaxy’s first N7 don’t give a shit about the odds. Somewhere in the mix Anderson manages to shut off the gravity, taking the linear firefight into multiple planes.

It’s like freeing a predator from a cage. Shepard’s helmet cam spins with dizzying swiftness as he kicks off walls, floor and ceiling ceasing to have meaning in zero G. His shotgun barks over the comm, tendrils of blue flickering around the edges of the camera lens, but this far away Kaidan’s gravity well remains silent and still.

A ragged cheer raises the rafters on the ‘Yang as the lead ship of the ragtag flotilla goes up. Kaidan presses a finger against his ear to ward off the sound, concentrating instead on the helmet cam and looking for any change in Shepard’s biofeeds.

The N team reaches the CIC. A lieutenant named Angevin goes down when they trigger an explosive while breaching the door, but not Shepard, it’s not Shepard, because there he is on Anderson’s helmet cam, blowing in like a tempest and executing three people, including their leader, without uttering a word. Minutes later, the stolen ship’s transponder changes back to an Alliance signature and the cheering begins anew.

Half the crew waits at the ‘Yang’s airlock to greet the N team when they return, Kaidan among them, swallowing back his relief like it’s a living, breathing thing. He gets lost in the shuffle when the airlock opens and the yelling starts, but Shepard’s gaze cuts through the crowd, and he parts it like Moses and the Red Sea. With a grin on his face that could shake the stars, he throws an armored arm around Kaidan and hugs him tight, thunking an energetic palm against his shoulder. Kaidan returns it just as fierce, the plating stiff and sterile against him.

“Did you see that?” Shepard exclaims when they part, elation on his face, hand still on Kaidan’s shoulder, biotic field humming with kinetic energy. This is Shepard in his element, Shepard at his best. The impossible means nothing to him.

Kaidan grins back. “Yeah, I saw it.”

Xavier/Magneto (X-men)

I have read fics with consensual mind control for them that were extremely formative. I also read fics with noncon mind control, though in general they were gen. The last one has happened in canon a few times, though it was often more complicated than that. It's never easy. But damn it works so well for well and there are so many possibilities

2. John/Scorpius (Farscape)

Nothing beat the horror of John realizing how the mental chip was influencing him, slowly, then too fast. And it was hot too.

3. Doctor/Master (Doctor Who)

With a Shalka image, because with the Master living in a robot body and unable to leave the TARDIS, there's at least an element of this, but there is potential in both directions and it would be so creepy and this show already has so many mind control plots. I think it might work.

4. Eden/Mohinder (Heroes)

I used to ship this really hard when I started watching Heroes, and the mind control was canon, and it had unrealized potential. So I spent quite a bit of time looking for fics. ^^

5. Christabel/Geraldine (Coleridge)

Discovered this ship in a Locked Tomb related accident, and damn, the canon mind control and creepy homoeroticism was everything.

6. Horatio/Lin (Horatio Lyle)

The fact that Horatio has trauma about Tseiqin mind control makes the possibility of this - for plot reasons of for sexy reasons - even more delightful.

The universe is good for this, and I've read so many good fics for this, from canon-typical use of compulsion to Web!Martin AU...

8. Sistah Spooky/Mindf**k (Empowered)

In canon Hannah is too much of a good person to brainwash anything but herself (and it's creepy enough), but she did some invasive-things-you-can-safeword-from in Theresa's mind anyway, and there would be so many possibilities, if the writer had not evilly made them fail to resurrect Hannah.

9. Knives/Legato (Trigun)

It happened once and of course the power dynamics totally go in the opposite direction, but still, it has fanfic potential.

10. The Gentleman with the Thistledown Hair/Stephen Black (Jonathan Strange and Mister Norrell)

Well we’ll just answer these together :3 I’m gonna go with like, her Act 1 impressions, since by the end of the game she trusts them all.

Ok this is a fun question. First I want to go into something about Morgan; she is always in people’s heads, trying to read their thoughts. This is how I role play her high charisma score; she’s not actually charismatic, she is just practiced at picking out what will get her what she wants from people’s minds. In this game she has two methods; detect thoughts and now this new tadpole mindlink. But the mind link is not sneaky at all, the other tadpoled companions can feel her digging around with it pretty easily, so she doesn’t really use it that way unless both are agreeing to share something. But I do imagine they all still get psychic impressions from one another…man I wish the game went into the tadpole connections more.

Sticking with the origin companions, the ones she trusts right away - Lae’zel, Wyll and Karlach.

Lae’zel has strong mental defenses but with a bit of effort Morgan can tell right away she’s panicked and honest in that she believes the creche will offer them a cure. Wyll and Karlach are also honest in what they say and what they think; more importantly she confirms they all share the desire to avoid ceromorphosis. Morgan is very excited when they recruit Wyll, she can tell right away he’s Noble (though she doesn’t pick up he’s the duke’s son) and expects him to take over as party leader….until he gets bedeviled. Curses.

Distrusts the most - Shadowheart, Gale and Astarion.

As soon as Shadowheart refuses to say who she worships, Morgan figures its one of the evil ones, and sure enough, she picks up on Shar all over her mind. Does she know anything about Shar? No. But it’s enough to make her extremely wary around the cleric and they proceed to have a rocky first act. She doesn’t trust Gale because he’s a wizard, he’s kind of pompous, and because he keeps catching her digging around into her mind, and NO she won’t apologize because for all she knows they have devious intentions and she has every right to protect herself considering their circumstances, and also there is something deeply, tightly guarded inside him that she cannot penetrate that frightens her.

Astarion is silent, except for the tadpole. She uses it once on him; when he goes to bite her for the first time. Once she understands he’s undead, it makes sense. Detect thoughts won’t work. Her trust levels even out when she realizes he just really, really wants blood, to the point of pathetically begging for it.

32. How did your Tav get their scars, if they have any?

Her facial scar was caused by a pissed off pixie with a needle that her wild magic summoned once. There’s a reason she didn’t free the one from the moon lantern 🤭

She also has some scars on her back/shoulders from old childhood beatings. Probably a few burn marks from the times she’s randomly burst into flames.

“Listen, I know I’m…” Fuck, this was awkward. “I know I’m not your real dad, but while we’re doing this, we should probably at least pretend like I am so no nosy aunties try anything.” “Law-san… you are my real dad,” Nauja replied. There was an uncomfortable silence between them, the only sounds being the waves against the sides of the ship. “My first dad… he wasn’t like you. He wasn’t mean, but…” She avoided eye contact, instead seeming very interested in what was going on behind Professor Nanuk’s ear. “What did you call your dad? In Flevench?” “Vaor, Vader, Papa…” “My dad wasn’t mean, but he also didn’t really like me,” Nauja said, her head bobbing in a nod. “My vaor loves me, because he teaches me, and tells me I’m good and smart, and does things to protect me that my dad would have never done. You gave up the crew for me… and I don’t know why, other than that you’re my vaor… and he would have never done that.” “Come here,” he requested, holding open his arms. The little girl stepped forward and allowed herself to be enveloped in his grasp, both glad that the hug was so warm against the cool night air.
