Random Doctor Who Facts You Might Not Know, Part 37
When Mel was 18 months old, she accidentally caused her older sister Anabel to fall down the stairs, which ended up killing her. Mel repressed the memories of her sister's death, and her parents decided to keep Anabel a secret from her. (Novel: Spiral Scratch)
When Leela eventually died, she was reborn as a girl named Emily. (Audio: The Child)
The Seventh Doctor visited Ace when she was a baby to apologize for many of the manipulations he would one day put her through (and that he would continue to put her through) because he thought it was easier talking to a baby than a teenager. He stole a baby picture of Ace and replaced it with a playing card while he was there. (Short story: Ace of Hearts)
Oliver Harper joined the First Doctor and Steven on the TARDIS because he was running from the police, who were chasing him because he had been outed as homosexual. (Audio: The Perpetual Bond)
Martha Jones met the Thirteenth Doctor while she and the Tenth Doctor were stranded in the 1960s after being attacked by the Weeping Angels. (Comic: A Little Help from My Friends)
The Fifth Doctor can go between referring to the TARDIS as "old girl" and as "flying deathtrap" incredibly quickly. (Audio: Zaltys)
Dodo Chaplet's funeral was attended by only two people: James Stevens and the Doctor. Her entire life after leaving the TARDIS was a shitshow and became dark enough that I will not elaborate here. Feel free to do some digging, but it is not for the faint of heart. (Novel: Who Killed Kennedy)
However, there are other accounts of Dodo's post-TARDIS days that do not end as terribly for her!!!! :D
The Doctor's frequent trips in a damaged TARDIS during the 1970s and 80s disrupted Earth's timeline to such a great extent that the two decades folded in on each other, making 20 years worth of events happen in 10. This is how the UNIT Dating Controversy was addressed. (Short story: The Enfolded Time)
The Brigadier once bullied the Third Doctor into getting his metabolism checked over because he didn't believe the Doctor would be safe in Bessie or the Whomobile. While this was all happening, Sarah Jane helped foil a Dalek plot. (Audio: Glorious Goodwood)
Adric does not speak English. He hears Alzarian through the TARDIS translation circuits. (Audio: Zaltys)
Ace has a younger brother named Liam but didn't remember he existed for a long while because their father took him when their parents separated. (Audio: The Rapture)
While on a school trip to the Natural History Museum, Ryan and Yaz helped the Second Doctor fight Myriapods, which are insect like in nature. (Short story: The Myriapod Mutiny)
For a while, the Tenth Doctor traveled with Heather McCrimmon, descendant of Jamie McCrimmon. (Comic: The Chromosomal Connection, et al...she's in a lot of comics)
Rory Williams became Caesar of Rome as an Auton after the death of the Empress Augusta. (Audio: The Unwilling Assassin)

5 Comfort Films
Thanks for the tag, @mysticstarlightduck, whose post is here!
Seems like everyone's doing this one today, and since I seem to be doing very little today except comforting myself after an extremely stressful day yesterday, I might as well go for it. (And maybe then I'll watch them all!)
(By the way, I'm well aware that the newest film on this list came out in 1991, and I make no apologies for that.)
Criteria: Like any top-5 style list, I had to come up with my own very specific criteria, because I'm an obnoxious, pretentious nerd. That means trying my best to include different categories -- I could easily name 5 musicals or 5 Disney movies, but I won't. So it's one musical, one Disney, one romcom, one dramedy, one straight-up farce, etc. Second of all, Christmas movies could be a category all on their own, so those are all disqualified (check back in December). Fourth, no sad endings (sorry Titanic, Moulin Rouge, and Casablanca.) Fifth, I cheated by naming a runner-up for each one that falls into the same category. Sixth... I'll shut up now. Here's the list.
The Sound of Music (1965) -- Honestly, just about any musical could probably find a spot on my comfort list, but it begins and ends with this one. Slow-burn romance, breathtaking cinematography, and arguably Rodgers and Hammerstein's greatest score make 3 hours go by like that. Even when the Nazis come on the scene you're never seriously worried anything bad will happen. Runner-up: Gigi (1958).
2. Mary Poppins (1964) -- Yes, Julie Andrews again. She herself could be a walking, singing comfort movie. There are a million Disney animated flicks that could make the comfort list, but by mixing animation and live action to perfection, this is automatically the best of both worlds. Even hearing Dick van Dyke's horrendous Cockney accent is like wrapping up in a warm blanket. Runner up: Beauty and the Beast (1991).
3. Pretty Woman (1990) -- I was probably well into my 20s before I realized, hey this isn't just a movie I watch every time it comes on TV for no reason. I actually LIKE it. It's one of those movies. The lightest, fluffiest movie about sex work ever made. A self-acknowledged Cinderella story. Runner-up: Just Like Heaven (2005).
4. The Breakfast Club (1985) -- Even though Ferris Bueller is also great and obviously the more conventional choice for a John Hughes comfort flick, I'm going to go with this one. Yes, it's a bit darker, but it's also funny as fuck, which is kind of my thing, it involves forbidden romance, which, duh, and also has a surprisingly hopeful and upbeat ending. Runner-up: Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986).
5. Spaceballs (1987) -- I thought way too hard about which film should get the last spot on the list. If the musicals are rainy-afternoon-watch-with-your-mom-in-the-living-room kind of movies, this is a late-night-premium-cable-parents not-home-watch-with-your-brother-in-the-basement-and-laugh-your-ass-off kind of movie. Every time I lampshade myself in something I write (and I do that a lot) it's a nod to Mel Brooks and the classic satirical style of comedy he perfected. Runner-up: Star Wars Original Trilogy (1977 et al.) (I know, not the same genre, but it's the source material, so whatever).
Hmmm... I'll gently tag @starlit-hopes-and-dreams and OPEN TAG because I'm seeing everybody get tagged in this and I can't keep them all straight.

Continuing to watch Hogan's Heroes:
Though I was initially concerned that the silly tone devalued the Nazi evil, I think this is only a concern in season one. Season two brings in actually competent Nazi officers to serve as actual threats (General Burkhalter, et al.). That makes it more acceptable that Klink and Schultz are likable baddies who are ineffective at doing evil, bringing them perilously close to being honorary good guys--because the Allied protagonists and the likable Nazis ("Nazi-Schmazis") are pinned in by more accurately threatening Nazis.
One recurring joke I like is that when the Allied soldiers have the need to dress up as Nazis, there is the exchange, "How do I look?"/"Good enough to kill," which cuts off the concern of the Nazi uniform's attractiveness functioning as propaganda that might propagate Nazism. That might be more effective than Mel Brooks' loose atmosphere of disdainful silliness surrounding his Nazi uniform shtick.

Comp Reading Lists
In an attempt to self-study several areas and expand my own knowledge, improve my ability to do research, and keep current with fields of interest, I'm building my own "comps list" here of relevant books. There are so many academic articles that I'm not sure if I'll include them here, but I'd like to at least track my reading of books. Comps lists are typically for Ph.D. students studying for exams, but I thought it might be a useful tool for me too. If you have suggestions, I welcome them.

in case you were wondering how my naming convention ruleset for a distant dnd campaign is coming along:
every first name in [undecided region] has a root + a suffix that denotes gender.
there are six genders in [undecided culture] which i might name, but for now they are roughly divided into masc, fem, transmasc, transfem, all/any/fluid, and none of the above.
masc names end in -a and -is. fem names end in -o and -an. transmasc: -lo and -el. transfem: -la and -al. it is also appropriate, of course, for trans people to use the regular masc/fem suffixes if they wish.
anyone of any gender can have a name ending in -u. genderfluid/multi-gender people may choose a -u name, a first and last name of different genders, or a first name with a suffix that changes depending on their mood.
none-of-the-above names end in -et and -er.
surnames! similarly, surnames have a root + gender + childbearing status.
so, masc adults without children: surnames end with -ar. masc adults with children: -aran. fem adults without / with children: -el, -elan. gender neutral adults without / with children: -ezh, -ezhan.
children of any gender have surnames that end in -in.
instead of mr/mrs/ms etc, masc adults are referred to as mar, fem adults as mel, gender neutral adults as mezh, and children as min.
(the basis of this and a lot of the root sounds, i borrowed from the goblin emperor lol just because i like the sound of the names in that book. also it's easier to develop a ruleset if you modify a fantasy one rather than start from scratch.)

Happy Saturday!
Kaori et al. (or whomever you’d like to do this for) are all at their candle store of choice. What and how many candles do they each come away with, or who has the self control?
(Alternatively (or also): what’s a bit of worldbuilding you absolutely love? Tell me please!)
I love that you specified Kaori, as she’s definitely one of my OCs most likely to buy candles.
Kaori is very drawn to scents and would be a regular at the candle store. The shop keepers would know her and her preferences and would let her know when they have new candles she might like. She would definitely splurge on a more expensive candle if she wanted it, but wouldn’t be prone to buying a lot at once.
Lucan would visit the candle store, mentally criticize the scent blends as not being actually therapeutic, and would leave without buying anything. He’d go home and make his own aromatherapy blends. I could see him actually taking up candle making.
Kai would have no self control. You’d think he would be the practical and thrifty one of the siblings, but he is not. He would definitely fall into the trap of the more you but the more free gifts you get trap.
Mel has never had to think about being thrifty. If she sees something she wants, she buys it. She would be the type to have so many candles that she would start running out of places to stash them. She’s also the type who would buy candles just because she likes them, even if she doesn’t need them. She’d end up gifting them to all her friends, even if they have no interest in candles. Imagine her gifting a candle to Nolan or Gram? They’d be like “What the hell am I supposed to do with this?”

1x09 is full of so many incredible moments, my absolute favourites being Layton making the decision to leave Santiago et al (probably one of the only Layton moments that actually resonates with me at all, it hits hard) and humanising Lilah Folger (after everything is said and done she's just a mum and she is worried about her child more than her own death omg right in the mum feels).
And of course we get Melanie in the vents, Melanie with her hair down, Melanie talking about the cost of power, the train demanding blood 😍😍😍 FAVE
But my poor girl Ruth is just so lost in this episode and I hate it 😩😩
There's tiny moments where I think she cares - asking for Mel's execution to be a public dethroning felt more like her stalling things for sure. But then a few scenes later she's all "is she dead yet Nolan because I'll ice her myself". I know she's supposed to still be all broken by her hero being dead or whatever but I just... Do not like.
Plus I always headcanoned that Ruth helped with Melanie's escape but it turns out that's just because I'd forgotten it was Jinju.
UGHH how is it possible to love and hate this show so much (spoiler alert it's neurodivergence)

#7 - Reflection on my Supervisor's Evaluations
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First I will post my evaluations so you can see what I am referring to.
I received two evaluations through my internship. The first one I received about 50 hours into my internship from Melissa and had positive feedback and the second I received after the completion of my internship, again with very positive results and feedback. Research has found that having feedback and evaluation can have a positive impact on working effort and culture, while also motivating improvement (Gnepp, et al, 2020). In review with how I performed to date, it was stated that I am very self-directed and engaged as required for clarification. As I’ve stated in the past, I had high communication regarding clarification as I did not have a high understanding of the sporting code and needed confirmation on a few things, including results, event information and key phrases to use.
Mel stated that my quality of work was very good. I had improved my quality and the professionalism of my work to the date of this feedback (8 September) and was quite proud to see that the extra effort had been noticed by Mel and other staff members.
I’ve always said I pride myself on my communication skills and I was very happy to receive compliments from Mel regarding my excellent communication and that I take direction and feedback well. I was always looking for feedback during my internship, one, because I was unsure at times if the work I was creating was following the standards and values of the organisation; and two, because I know that I produce high quality work when receiving feedback and direction (whether negative or positive). I thrive on insight and will always look for second opinions or feedback on my work, and this was also found by Mel who said that one of my core strengths was my adaptation and responsiveness to feedback.
My other strength was my creativity and my keen eye for design. I find myself scrolling through social media daily looking at different styles and designs to inspire my own creativeness, while also looking to see what works and what doesn’t. This was kind of evident as through my internship, the style of content thoroughly changed depending on what was working, and Annina and I found that using simple photos and basic text was finding more positive results then highly edited templates. Annina in my second evaluation pointed this out and also agreed that one of my strengths was adapting well and understanding the importance of change.
My areas of improvement that Mel listed was to develop confidence to contribute to direction and improving communications engagement with audience and planning longer term. After this feedback I took it on board and begun to plan out content for longer periods of time, and as I mentioned in my achievements and milestones, I planned out weeks of content ideas for upcoming events and scheduled content for consistent posts. In terms of the contribution to direction and improving communications, this was a bit harder to achieve. After Mel left, the work load was slightly increased for everyone so the creation of content and scheduling was to not be completely overhauled (which Mel and I were discussing prior to her leaving). The organisation wanted consistency as they had not had someone working in media and communication specifically and the ideas for new, modern and bright templates was not immediately working well with audiences and stakeholders, so when it came to content in the latter half of my internship, it was more catered to the stakeholders and a bit traditional.
Overall, Mel gave my evaluation in September a 3.8, while Annina gave mine a 15.6. I am very happy with these outcomes and feedback, and I will continue to use these as I move into paid roles within the industry and will continue to look for feedback as a way to learn and enhance my skills and knowledge.

Doris Loh comments:
It feels awesome to be validated by science.
A recently published study ties together two of my peer-reviewed papers on melatonin regulation of phase separation [1, 2, 3].
How?
In my first paper on melatonin regulation of phase separation, I talked extensively about the post-translational modification of SUMOylation used by melatonin to regulate phase separation https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3921/10/9/1483/htm.
In my third paper on melatonin regulation of phase separation, I explained how melatonin can suppress viral replication by regulating phase separation of the nucleocapsid (N) protein https://www.mdpi.com/1422-0067/23/15/8122/htm
Now this peer-reviewed paper published at Nature reports that SUMOylation facilitates nucleocapsid protein phase separation, enhancing the virulence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus [1].
I published the first paper in September 2021, the third in July 2022. Some serious #lohcurve for you. Got MEL?

2/2 *said with a lot of excitement and then the excitement died down* BRIAN CAME TO THE SHOW…dressed horribly. Okay, but he’s here! Now win him back! *brian calls the painting exquisite and he laughs* i sound crazy but i swear you can tell that it either took them forever to film this because look how they smile during the scene or they think this whole episode is bullshit. And i like both options.’ ‘Justin. Leave your moms boyfriend alone. Why is he such a little shit lately? He’s acting like he’s 5. I guess Brian isn’t the only one who went back to season 1 (Justin says hes an adult) you sure? (Tucker tells him to act like one) *gasp* DAMN! Sorry Blondie but he got your ass on that one.’ And we are at the Brian/Mikey scene ‘when I said win him back, HE was not who I meant! If anyone needs to apologize it’s Mike! Im tired of Brian always doing that. Oh fuck you Mike, it’s his version of an apology. *lifts his cast* Brian’s rights! Fuck. Brian looks completely broken. I’ve never wanted to fight someone more than Mike. Not even in season 1 and you know I hated his ass back then!’ *pauses tv* ‘be honest.. did these two fucking hated each other in real life? Cause i swear this storyline feels so fucking random when you think about it, especially after the bike race. Its like they couldn’t be in the same room so they just gave them as little scenes together as possible..and one of them plays angry and hateful a bit too good’ (btw i stayed silent here and he got annoyed at me) And Lindsay and Mel just hooked up ‘OH COME ON! For once i was happy with their relationship and here they go again! Everyone is getting back together except the one that needs to!’ ‘Justin. You were fucking horrible to that guy. You’re acting like a fucking kid. Why can’t Jen also date a hot stud? Now what do I have to do to get Brian and Justin back together? Cause Brian would make him realize he’s acting dumb’ And Brian is in Babylon ‘i hate this. These scenes alone with him in a club with no friends and even worse! no Justin. Fuck this. Fuck everything. He just fucking imagined Mike. Itd be way better if he imagined Justin though. And he’s alone again! Fuck everything! Burn it all and throw it away.’ And then he got up, went outside and sat there for almost half an hour while just staring at the sky.
i sound crazy but i swear you can tell that it either took them forever to film this because look how they smile during the scene or they think this whole episode is bullshit. And i like both options.’ He's going to die for the little amount of tea that has been spilled about Randy and the writers.
Brian looks completely broken. I’ve never wanted to fight someone more than Mike. Not even in season 1 and you know I hated his ass back then!’
Also LOLing at him wondering how Gale et al felt about Hal.
And yes Brian imagining Mikey there instead of Justin is the worst and it totally foreshadows that very last scene and I hate it. I hate the writers and what they did.
I think we all deserve a half hour of staring at the sky just because season 5.

Movie Preview: Mel Gibson plays Garrett Hedlund's daddy, Carjacked by Willa Fitzgerald on "Desperation Road"
An Oct 6 release from Lionsgate, et al. Sort of Stockholm Syndromish involvement with an accused cop killer? Hard to tell from this, but the familial casting seems rock solid.
