Part 2 of THIS because I couldn’t leave it as is.
--
Mei’s not sure if he ever really sleeps. His neck aches and his back feels stiff. Actually, scratch that, everything aches and the chair he’s been sitting in for hours - or has it been days? - is digging into all the worst places. They really need more comfortable chairs in here.
Whenever he dozes, something startles him awake. It’s usually nightmares. Visions of blood coating his hands, his disparate pleas for Kazuya to stay awake, his friends dragging him away as Kenjirou and Nori cart Kazuya away. It’s torture.
When he’s awake, he stares at the monitor beside Kazuya’s bed. How long has he been out? Should Mei be worried? Is Kazuya in a coma now? Maybe he should ask Nori the next time he comes in. Just to make sure.
But while he waits, Mei stares. He stares at the heart monitor registering a constant, steady beat. He stares at Kazuya’s face and notes the steady return of color. Pale wasn’t a good match for him, he thinks with a small smile.
Because he can smile now. Because his friends are miracle workers that managed to bring Kazuya back from the dead. And Kazuya had been dead. Mei hadn’t felt a heartbeat. It doesn’t matter how many times Nori insists that his heartbeat was simply too weak to feel. Mei felt him leave. He’d been gone.
It scared the shit out of Mei. It still does. He’d been so close to losing Kazuya forever.
Sitting up, Mei lets out something between a groan and a sigh. His joints pop and crack. His muscles stretch. It feels both relieving and uncomfortable.
Mei feels like shit. Probably looks like shit as well. His eyes feel crusty as he rubs them more awake. He’s definitely never let his hair accumulate so much grease. No wonder Katsuyuki glared at him earlier, why Carlos gave him such a wide berth, and why Youichi told him to shower.
Damn. He’s becoming a mess and it’s all because of this idiot that had died and come back. Fucking Kazuya always making his life more difficult.
He still can’t figure out how their mark found out about Kazuya. He’s reviewed their plans over and over until Nabe eventually forced him to stop. Kazuya is the best at his job. He’s good at manipulating, planning, and gathering intel. It’s why they leave that part of the job for him. Unless it requires a more... flirtatious hand then Carlos takes over.
So it’s unheard of that Kazuya had been identified so easily. It also means Kazuya won’t be able to go into the field so publicly anymore, especially if his face was seen.
Chewing on his nail, Mei can’t seem to keep his thoughts under control. Do they have a mole? Has their base of operations been compromised? Do they need to move locations?
“You look like shit.” Mei looks up, finding Kazuya’s eyes open for the first time in... Mei has no idea but seeing Kazuya awake makes him feel a lot in a short time. It’s overwhelming, and he almost falls to the floor in his haste to stand up.
“You’re awake,” he breathes out. He ignores Kazuya’s statement for the moment. “How do you feel?” Kazuya opens his mouth but Mei stops him. “Wait!” Turning toward the door, he yells, “Nori!”
The door flings open, banging against the wall, and a frantic Nori appears. “What’s wrong?” His eyes fall on Mei. “What’s...” and then he realizes Kazuya is looking at him and all the fight leaves his body. “Kazuya, thank god...”
Mei pretends the sense of relief in Nori’s voice is normal. Refuses to believe his friend thought Kazuya wasn’t going to wake up. The only thing that matters is that Kazuya is awake and alive.
Mei watches as Nori goes about checking Kazuya’s vitals and changes the bandages around his chest. Mei is anxious to know how Kazuya is. Yes, he’s awake. Yes, he’s alive. But is he okay? Mei can’t stop his leg from bouncing or his fingers from twitching at his sides.
“Relax, Mei,” Kazuya speaks to him as Nori continues his work. Mei doesn’t like the way his voice sounds, so he busies himself by pouring a glass of water. “How long...” His voice still sounds breathless.
Nori slowly raises the bed so Kazuya can drink. Mei hands the cup to Kazuya but notices how shaky he is and takes it back. Kazuya frowns but then he stares at Mei with surprised confusion when Mei holds up the glass for him. Surprisingly, Kazuya doesn’t fight it.
“That bad then?” He asks. His voice sounds a little better with the water and Mei considers that a win. Kazuya looks to Nori for answers.
Nori gives a curt nod. “You’ve been out for four days. You lost a lot of blood and your left lung collapsed. Kenjirou and I managed to stitch you up, but...” His voice trails off. “Anyway, you’re on bed rest until we determine you fit for work.”
“You’re kidding...” Kazuya’s mouth falls open.
Mei sees the fight in his eyes. “You died, Kazuya.” His voice is whispered and strained. Kazuya blinks at him. “As far as I’m concerned, you’re benched for the rest of your life.” Mei doesn’t mean to snap, yeah, he’s a little miffed because Kazuya must have gotten lax on that last mission. Or maybe careless. Or something.
“You can’t-” Kazuya begins to argue but the door flinging open again stops him. That door is definitely going to come off its hinges soon.
“Kazuya!” Youichi yells. His eyes are wild and his clothes look disheveled. The news of Kazuya’s wakening must have sent him into a frenzy. “Shit man!” He stalks toward them but Nori intercepts him and ushers him toward the door. “Don’t you scare me like that again! You hear me?”
“Yes, yes,” Nori sighs, taking Youichi’s hand in his. Well, that’s a development Mei hadn’t seen coming. “You can yell at my patient when he’s stronger.” Youichi surprisingly gives in and lets Nori pull him through the door.
Kazuya hums and Mei sees the same curious intrigue on the other’s face. “That’s unexpected.” Mei laughs a little. Kazuya eyes him and Mei tilts his head in question. “Have you even slept?”
“Here and there,” Mei says, eyes leaving Kazuya’s to focus on various objects around the room.
“Mei.” The worry in Kazuya’s voice makes Mei bristle with nervous energy. “You need to take care of yourself.”
“You died, Kazuya.” His voice breaks and he needs to take a calming breath. “I felt you die with my own hands and I couldn’t do anything. If you really thought I was going to leave you...” His jaw clenched and he falls back into his chair. “Shit, Kazuya, I thought I lost you.”
There’s a beat of silence. Mei’s heart resounds loudly in his ears as the stress built up over the last few days washes over him. He’s relieved but he’s also terrified. Damn, he’s having a hard time gathering himself this time.
“Mei.” Kazuya’s voice is strained as well. “I’m okay.” But you weren’t, Mei wants to say. I’m not okay.
His hands are shaking when Kazuya’s falls on them. Mei stares at the IV on the back of Kazuya’s hand.
“Thanks,” Kazuya whispers after a moment, “for watching out for me.”
Mei snorts. It’s an ugly, wet sound cause by unshed tears. His eyes burn and his vision blurs. Lack of sleep has really messed with his emotions. “Someone has to watch your stupid ass,” he says, throat closing painfully around the words. “Everyone knows you can’t take care of yourself.”
Kazuya’s fingers tighten around his hand slightly. “And this coming from the person who can’t cook for shit.”
Mei looks up, tears spilling over and down his face. Kazuya’s giving him a lopsided grin tinged with exhaustion. “Shut up.” They laugh. Mei wipes his tears away, and says, “Get some sleep.”
Humming, Kazuya leans back on the bed and closes his eyes. “Mei?” Mei waits for him to continue. “Go take a shower.”
“I’m not leaving,” he responds in all his stubbornness.
Kazuya’s lips turn up and he lets out a breathy laugh. The sound reminds Mei of that night and his heart sinks. “If you’re that worried, send Youichi in.” Mei bites his lip to keep from laughing. “He sounded like he wanted to give me a piece of his mind.”
“You probably deserve it.” Mei stands on shaky legs. He’s not sure what to do with himself, but now that he knows Kazuya is okay he thinks he can go. “I’ll be back before you wake up.”
Kazuya hums and he notices his breathing slowing down. “I know you will.” His voice is barely above a whisper. It’s more like a sigh.
Before leaving to find Youichi and Nori, he leans down and presses a kiss to Kazuya’s forehead. He’s alive, he tells himself as he looks to the monitor one more time. Kazuya’s alive.
