𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳? 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳? Belajar Bahasa Inggris di Indonesia 

 Alhamdulillah yah materi edukasi dari kampus masi ada lah yang nyisa, hmm sekitar 0,97%, mungkin. Seinget gue, “learning should be meaningful. Then how? How to be meaningful? One of its ways is to relate it to the surroundings, relate it to your students’ life, be contextual. ” Nah kontekstual. Gue, murid gue, kami tinggal dan dibesarkan di Indonesia. Ngomong juga masih banyakan bahasa Indonesia. Jadi kalo kami lagi belajar bahasa Inggris ya ga mesti jadi 100% keinggrisan. Maksudnya? Misalnya, teks naratif yang dibahas ga melulu topiknya tentang US, UK, atau luar negeri lainnya. Tapi kadang-kadang bisa banget lah bahas teks yang topiknya tentang Indonesia. Misal, apa sih yang lagi heboh di Indonesia, film Indonesia yang mendunia, tokoh-tokoh Indonesia, dsb. Pengecualian kalo lagi bahas teks dari textbook murid itu sendiri (kalo kaya gini ya ngikutin buku pelajaran sekolah si murid). Selain bahas teks yang topiknya tentang Indonesia, pas ngajar gue juga lebih suka pake nama-nama orang Indonesia, atau nama-nama yang relate to my student, Ketimbang make nama David, Jusin, Rachel, Arnold, Anne, atau Stephanie and friends, gue lebih suka make nama Anggi, Lia, Bayu, Aldi, Galih, dan Ratna. Kenapa? Ya itu tadi, to get meaningful learning. Biar lebih ngena gitu.

Bisa kok kita bikin English sentences dari sekitar kita. Bisa kok nama-nama orang Indonesia dipake buat belajar bahasa Inggris. Misalnya, tadi pas ngajarin Farah tentang penggunaan do/ does and have/ has:

*T: Teacher *S: Student

T: “Farah, what is your sister’s name? OMG sorry I’ve asked for some times and always forget, hhe (grinning).” S: “Filza.” T: “Oya Filza. Ok, does Filza have striped T-shirt? striped T-shirt itu kaos belang-belang ya. So what is the answer? Jawabannya apa? Filza, adek kamu, dia punya kaos belang-belang ga? S: “No, she doesn’t. She doesn’t has any striped T-shirt.” T: “No, she doesn’t. She doesn’t have any striped T-shirt. Kan udah ada doesn’t jadi pake have aja.” S: “Eh iyak, she doesn’t have.” T: “How about her best friends? Kamu tau gak sahabatnya Filza?” S: “Tau. Ajeng, Zaskia, and Nisa.” T: Oke, kita make they itu buat Ajeng, Zaskia, and Nisa ya. Do they have slime to play? Mereka punya slime juga gak kayak kamu? S: “Oh. Yes. Yes, they does. They have slime to play. T: “Does or do?” S: “Oiyya, do. Yes, they do.”

Sebenarnya, dulu pas masih SMP-SMK, gue pun sempet mikir, kenapa ya di buku pelajaran Bahasa Inggris, atau di soal-soal ulangan itu lebih sering make nama orang asing ketimbang nama orang Indonesia  (lebih sering ya, ada si yang make nama orang Indonesia, tapi jarang seinget gue wkwkw)? Misalnya pas contoh letters. Sendernya biasanya Andrew and friends, terus receivernya Jane and friends. “Kenapa pengirim suratnya bukan “Jaka” dan penerimanya itu “Ayu” ?   Tapi kalo jaman sekarang sih, asiknya, (setau gue) buku pejaran bahasa Inggris kurikulum 2013 yang sekarang dipake (sekolah negeri di DKI kayaknya kebanyakan make yang kurikulum 2013), lebih kontekstual, lebih dekat ke kehidupan sehari-hari, dan lebih Indonesia. Lain cerita kalo Cambridge textbook dan semacamnya yang mostly full in Western context. Seinget gue malah, buku murid privat gue yang Cambridge text book, blas ga ada sama sekali teks atau kata-kata yang terkait Indonesia. Jadi kita bisa kok belajar bahasa Inggris tanpa meninggalkan Indonesia (hmm, keberatan ga si bahasa gue wkwk). Yha, mungkin lebih tepatnya, kita bisa banget kok belajar bahasa Inggris dari sekitar kita. Karena ketakdiran (katanya ga ada yang kebetulan) gue dan murid gue orang Indonesia, yha konteksnya tentang Indonesia. Biar meaningful. Semoga.
