You seem into musicals. Can you tell me what's wrong with Hamilton? When I first heard of it in 2016 it was praised. But then people started criticizing it angrily, saying it was racist and classist. I didn't look into it more for a long time cuz i didn't care, i dont even know the plot. But it's all over my dash again and I googled it and all I can find are opinion pieces insulting the lyricist's musical skill and saying "Hamilton is bad in every way." without providing a reason.
Oh girl, it 100% got the typical tumblr cringe culture treatment. Hamilton was (still is) super popular in real life, and the weirdos on here can’t be caught dead liking things earnestly, especially not something that other people like! You silly goose. Enjoying things is cringy! So, like every other piece of popular media that tumblr liked, it quickly turned around to tear it to shreds and claim anyone who likes this award-winning musical is #cringe (I guess that includes Barack Obama LOL).
Because it’s tumblr, they’ll never actually admit to hating something for the petty need to feel superior to others by being edgy and hating mainstream media; they have to claim it’s evil and that those who enjoy it are bigoted. I mean, I think what Lin-Manuel Miranda and the original diverse cast of Hamilton did was insert people of color into the myth of America, and I mean myth in the sense that history can get to the point where it’s like a cultural myth. We all know damn well that the Founding Fathers were white slave owners, but Hamilton gives actors of color a chance to insert themselves into the story of the beginning of America. But tumblr completely reduces it to “It’s about slave owners so it’s evil and liking it is bad.” Were there fans on here who stanned the Founding Fathers? Yes, but anyone with common sense knows that’s a tiny minority of fans of this musical lol. All fandoms do stupid shit. People (not just on tumblr, even edgelords on twitter) act like Hamilton is #neoliberal propaganda to get people to stan colonizers, but it’s really just a musical telling the story of the complicated people that were the Founding Fathers lol. History is messy but worth talking about, and making art from history isn’t wrong. Everyone not dipped in 10 layers of cynicism knows that. The best was when I saw some non-American on twitter ranting about how evil Lin-Manuel Miranda is for writing a musical about slave owners and like....girl you don’t even live here lol. Just don’t listen to the musical.
I also find it pretty insulting to the diverse casts of Hamilton to imply that they’re somehow too stupid to realize they’re a part of this #propaganda, or even outright malicious for being in a piece of media that tries to present the thoughts and motivations of these historical figures. The same goes for poc who are fans of it. It’s like...some people really think poc are stupid, huh. You think they don’t know the complicated start of America??? Maybe they’re more informed than you but have, wait for it, critical thinking skills 🤔. But I digress.
Tl;dr the fact that you could only find vague opinion pieces like “musical bad!” is telling. Tumblr just hates Hamilton because of cringe culture, and fails to realize that most people outside of this site still like it—as is the case for most things this site hates lol. Even if you wind up listening to it and not liking its style, I think you’ll see the hate is way overblown.
Edit: wait LMAO how the fuck is it classist?

Just got back from watching Last Christmas!! My full review!
 MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW
Yesterday, while bored at work, I got to reading through Last Christmas reviews and I was surprised to see that a majority of major publications reporting on it were panning it and even more surprised to see that those who liked the film were “meh” on Emilia’s performance. So if you’re like me and are worried because of what the critics are saying, here’s my take.
1) Last Christmas never pretends to be anything other than exactly what it is. Though I knew the “twist” going into the movie (cuz it’s pretty obvious and I had read other reviews), the film never tries to trick its audience in any way or try to hide what the major “twist” will be at the end. It’s actually pretty in your face from the get go and as I’ve been averse to twist endings lately (thanks GOT), I appreciated this.
2) I can see why some people didn’t like it...for about the first third of the movie. Going in, obviously I had ridiculously high expectations because, duh, my girl Emilia Clarke. And that was dumb of me. I went in wanting to LOVE the movie but for the first act, I ended up feeling “meh” about it.
3) BUT, about a third of the way through, the movie really picks up and hits you HARD. At least it did me. Maybe it’s because I’m a late twenty something with a job I never intended on having, still trying to make a dream come true, looking for love, blah blah blah, but I just felt so much while watching this movie. I should have brought tissues, seriously, because for the rest of the film I was holding back tears the entire time.
It’s not that the love aspect of the movie is particularly intense. I actually didn't buy into the love story that much, if I’m being honest. But it was Emilia’s character Kate’s life ups and downs and emotional arc and change that struck me. Of course, it’s a Christmas movie. It was always going to have some upbeat message, reason-for-the-season kinda deal. You sign up for that going into any Christmas movie.
But I suppose I liked Last Christmas’s so much because it just seemed so...relevant. Maybe not relevant in the world, but on a personal level. Seriously, any lost and confused millennial/twenty-something looking for a film to make you feel motivated to get your life together, go see this.
4) The movie had other worldly “messages” too, but they didn’t really stick. Not saying that I thought the movie had a “liberal agenda” or anything because nothing felt forced or shoved down your throat. It’s just that some things seemed a bit superfluous or never really paid off or felt unrelated to the rest of the film.
The Brexit thing probably was the most obvious of these “superfluous” plots, but I guess I can see what Emma Thompson (screenwriter) intended with it. Kate’s character kind of has undertones of an identity crisis tied up with her heritage (insisting she be called “Kate” when her name is actually “Katarina”) but it just didn’t seem relevant to her changes toward becoming a better person.
Especially since the movie doesn’t go into much in detail in regards to her parents and her mother specifically. It’s mentioned her mother has depression and that her father avoids being home to avoid her but it’s never stated why and we’re never shown how that conflict is resolved. So because there was no pay-off, I could have done without it. But it in no way seemed distracting or took away from the film in any way.
5) Emilia’s performance was EVERYTHING. I have no idea what the people saying she wasn’t great are smoking. One review I read said something about all the other characters in the film stealing the show and Emilia just being kinda there but I felt the total opposite. Emilia IS the movie. Every emotional beat, every tear-jerking moment is because of Emilia’s amazing performance. Everyone else, including, sadly, Henry Golding, just kind of gravitate around Emilia. Some of the other characters have silly one-liners but none of them are “show stealingly” good.
Some critics are talking about Emilia’s character not being “likable” enough and I call bullshit. Yes, she’s abrasive in the beginning of the movie. She’s supposed to be. That’s the whole fucking point. But she’s a character you do end up caring about, caring about a lot, and end up fully rooting for throughout the film. The thing I loved about Emilia’s character and Emilia’s performance, is that Kate is just so relatable.
6) The romantic element of the film was a little odd and honestly, didn’t feel very important. Anyone saying Emilia has more chemistry with Henry Golding than Kit Harington is just saying that to spite Jonerys fans cuz it ain’t true. But I think the lack of chemistry was probably due to the nature of their character’s relationship rather than genuine lack of chemistry between the actors. Tom (Henry Golding’s character) is dead. It’s not explained what he is (ghost, vision, hallucination), but he’s dead. He knows he’s dead. He knows they can’t have a romantic relationship. He’s. Dead.
7) But the lacking “romance” in the film, again, doesn’t take away from the movie in any way. It’s not about the romance. It’s about Kate’s character and her making changes in her life for the better. For this reason, I can see why people are comparing this to “It’s a Wonderful Life” except, rather than be shown an alternate timeline of her life, Kate is just living a shit life, but one that she fully is capable of turning around all on her own - just with a little friendly nudging from Tom.
Overall, I really really enjoyed Last Christmas, weirdly way more than I was expecting to but mostly because I wasn’t expecting the film that was delivered. Had this been the straight romcom it was advertised as, I actually might not have enjoyed it as much as I did.
It you’re looking for that Christmas romcom with ooey-gooey lovey-dovey feels, this may not be the film for you. You may be better off re-watching the Collin Firth storyline from Love Actually, or your generic Hallmark movies.
But, if you are in the mood for something Christmassy and something pick-me-up/feel-good a la “It’s a Wonderful Life”, definitely go see Last Christmas.
Or just go see it anyway cuz duh it’s Emilia Clarke!

Super detailed OC questions- Belxari: 6 : D Oat: current party members' national dex numbers -50 until they fit on the list. Siren: 5d100 Rixy: 3d100 (cuz she's shorter)
Super Detailed Questions About Your OCs
Belxari6. What were they like at school? Did they enjoy it? Did they finish? What level of higher education did they reach? What subjects did they enjoy? Which did they hate? She was homeschooled. Sylmore taught her magic and grifting. Also some of her theatre skills. The rest were primarily through watching actors do their thing. Merric taught her second story work. This isn’t what you’re asking though. I know what you’re asking. Fine, I’ll give you the answer you want. Belxari went to a school once. It was quite literally one of the single most traumatizing events in her life. She nearly died in some sort of blood ritual, nearly died when the building started burning down around them, and she nearly died a couple times after that. But I don’t know if that necessarily has anything to do with the trauma. It’s probably the fact that Sylmore snapped at her after she told him to pick the lock faster to get them out of the burning room faster. Yeah, that’s it. Nothing to do with anything or anyone else at all. She did not enjoy her time in school.
Oat5. Do they have any siblings? What’s their names? What is their relationship with them? Has their relationship changed since they were kids to adults? She has an older brother named Quinn. They didn’t have an especially strong relationship, but only because she was more into video games and he was into Pokemon, so he was outside and she was inside most of the time. When he left home, it caused some problems in the family and their father ended up leaving shortly after Quinn. She hasn’t spoken to her brother since he left.
18. What’s their favourite genre of: books, music, tv shows, films, video games and anything elseSci-fi is her jam. All the future-tech. Also open sandbox RPG video games (Skyrim, Breath of the Wild, etc.) that aren’t necessarily sci-fi. She likes to do her own thing and wander into the plot on accident.
25. What do they find funny? Do they have a good sense of humour? Are they funny themselves? Her sense of humor is absolutely the worst. She’s the sort to say something almost funny, and then just snort-laughs disregarding everyone just staring.
26. How do they act when they’re happy? Do they sing? Dance? Hum? Or do they hide their emotions? Her emotions are on her sleeve. She has a feel, she just goes for it. She cares not for the social constructs that tell her not to do so.
33. What underwear do they wear? Boxers or briefs? Lacey? Comfy granny panties? Um. Uh. Uhhh. We’re just gonna go with Those Girl Boxers I guess?
47. How do they act in a formal occasion? What do they think of black tie wear? Do they enjoy fancy parties and love to chit chat or loathe the whole event?Awkward forever. She is the most awkward creature. Dresses aren’t really her thing, and suits aren’t her thing really either. She’s definitely a small gathering of friends just chilling kind of person.
Siren4. What is their relationship with their parents? What’s a good and bad memory with them? Did they know both parents? As a genasi, she really only knows one parent, her mother in this case. Their relationship was originally just fine. Siren worked on a merchant ship as a sailor, and was able to visit home with surprising regularity. And then she was shipwrecked and went a bit insane and her new mission keeps her away from home quite a bit more. She’s only been home a couple times since then, leaving the relationship… malnourished. She is one of the few people Siren legitimately likes. Her mother was a baker, and sometimes she let Siren “help” her when she was a small child. These times always resulted in the worst baked goods imaginable. But they were fun times, often resulting in both of them having more flour on them than anywhere else. They would often go get ice cream - still covered in flour - while whatever they made was cooling.
21. Do they have a temper? Are they patient? What are they like when they do lose their temper?Thin patience. Her relationship with everyone began strained, and likely only worsened from there, unless you managed to prove yourself to be not the most annoying person ever. If you truly anger her - not just annoy her, but legitimately anger her - she may respond by casting Fire Bolt on your face. Or she might just decide that you no longer exist and will outright ignore everything you ever say and do until she gets over it. Which she may or may not ever do. It depends on the circumstances ultimately which way she goes.
30. Do they exercise? Regularly? Or only when forced? What do they act like pre-work out and post-work out? Before being shipwrecked, she worked on a ship every day, which is enough of a workout on its own. Now, she has daily practices she does to keep herself semi-limber and ready to fight as necessary, but it isn’t necessarily a work-out per se. But sometimes she does. She tends to be in a little bit of a better mood afterwards because adrenaline and all that jazz.
39. Do they like letters? Or prefer emails/messaging? No, don’t talk to her. If texting existed, she would only communicate via that, only when necessary, and with the fewest number of words possible. Like three days later.
46. Do they make a good first impression? Does their first impression reflect them accurately? How do they introduce themselves? No. Sort of. She doesn’t. Siren does not like people. She has an entire civilization in her head, making people even more The Worst than they had been prior. She is very blunt about how much people annoy her, so most first impressions will be of a very angry person who hates you in particular even though you’ve only just met. If you get to know her, you will discover that she…. hates you personally now that she knows you. Maybe.
Rixy14. Do they have any specific memories of food/a restaurant/meal? She doesn’t have any memories. :DBut she does have a small book with a list of what she assumes are city names and a rating of their prisons. Categories include things such as cleanliness, comfort of facilities, several categories rating the guards, and the quality of meals.
29. What do they do when they find out someone else’s fear? Do they tease them? Or get very over protective? It depends on whether she thinks it’s a silly fear or not. She’ll maybe tease them a little when she first finds out, but she’ll never intentionally screw with them. (She might forget. She might find a really neat bug and show you excitedly, only remembering your fear of bugs after you’ve reacted negatively. She will apologize. She might do it again on accident later. She doesn’t mean to. There’s just so much to remember about people.)
48. Do they enjoy any parties? If so what kind? Do they organise the party or just turn up? How do they act? What if they didn’t want to go but were dragged along by a friend? She is all about going places and doing things. She doesn’t care what is going on; if there is a gathering, she will absolutely show up to see what’s going on. She will talk to every single person and become friends with everyone, their extended family, and all of the pets. She will inevitably walk away with random shiny and/or interesting things that belong to not-her. It’s a good thing she found your lost object. It would have been a shame if it had been lost forever.

Well today was pretty chill. I woke up at approximately 1:37 pm and stayed in bed reading on my phone till approximately 1:58 pm, at which point I got up and went downstairs. I inquired about making pancakes, but my mom informed me we don't have any eggs, and suggested we go out to get something to eat. I suggested maybe the diner since I was still thinking breakfast food, but then she said we should go to the place I went with my friend on Monday, to which I said sure, so we went. I got the same thing I got Monday because I'm actually a super boring person who gets the same thing every time she goes to a restaurant, but their cinnamon swirl French toast is very good and I definitely enjoyed it the second time around as well. Afterwards we went to Costco; we were gonna go to the grocery store but then my mom said she should get the dog food from Costco cuz our westie has been shaking potentially from changing the food (apparently you're not supposed to do that with her health issues) so we went to Costco instead, which was nice, got some samples and all. On our way back home I looked at my grades and saw my A in crim pro was posted, so I'm officially just waiting on juvenile justice, which is of course the class that I handed in the final for first lol. It occurred to me then that there's probably a solid chance my JJ professor doesn't even know tomorrow is the grade deadline, because he's kind of clueless about that stuff given that he's fairly old and technology definitely isn't his thing haha. But hey, hopefully it'll be submitted by tomorrow and then I'll have all my grades. It's funny, my grades came in the order of what class I was least confident in to the class I was most confident in. I was pretty unsure about family law which came in first, slightly unsure about evidence and crim pro but more so in evidence than crim pro, and I was most confident in juvenile justice with my 12 page written final. So I'm not particularly worried here, but I'd just like to know everything is good and my GPA should be that much higher and eventually the class rankings will come in and it'll be a beautiful sight. Sigh, lol. It's kind of silly that I'm this focused on getting a better class ranking when it really doesn't make any material difference to anything other than my pride about being the "smartest" and having the best grades, because too 15% when I don't qualify to grade on to law review just isn't doing it for me. Major sigh, lol. Anyway. When we got home my dad called and informed us he got an email back from the school after our latest submission to them about all the New York State laws they're breaking, and the school has officially called off the expulsion hearing and said they won't be pursuing any disciplinary actions at this time. So this was really a major victory for us to stick it to them in a big way with our legal know how and show them that they can't just trample all over people and call it righteousness, the gospel doesn't work like that, Jesus doesn't work like that, and if you're gonna call yourselves a Christian school you sure as hell need to do a better job in modeling that for your students. And like, as much fun as I would've had raining destruction down on the school (and oh, I would've had so much fun) I'm happy that this was the solution for my sister and her friend, and truth be told I don't want to be the person who single handedly brought down the school I attended for 13 years, even if I have many problems with them. I mean, they're one of the only Christian schools left on the island, my mom used to teach there, my sister still goes there.....as frustrated as I was I never wanted to be the school's destruction. If I could get a few people like the superintendent and the dean of students fired that would be one thing, but I have a feeling a story like this would take on a life of its own and who knows the consequences that would have for them. So for now anyway, it's a happy ending for all involved, and I really hope those bastards know how damn lucky they are that they made the right choice here, and just how much shit they were in. Sigh. My sister was home and wanted to go to this cute little soup place by us so I took her there but didn't get anything myself being that I was still fairly full from the food at the restaurant. Came back, hung out for a while before having dinner with the family. My mom made spaghetti and meatballs which was quite good. After dinner and a short spat with my dad over his idea to deport all the "gangbangers" families and how sacrificing innocent children is not okay, even if it's an effective way to stop gangs, (it wasn't really a big deal, just enough to make me go UGH and comment "this is why nobody believes republicans actually care about families") I retreated to the back room and watched an episode of frequency before realizing a bunch of my shows were returning this week, and blindspot was coming back in like 10 minutes, so I switched over to that then to watch their mid-season premiere. I had forgotten like, everything that happened in their mid-season finale besides the Paterson stuff, so I needed to be reminded about all the other stuff. Overall good episode, of course not following their standard procedure but still good. Zapata was annoying the piss out of me which isn't common, but given the circumstances she can definitely be forgiven. PATERSON THOUGH. Poor Paterson, she's suffered so much through the seasons, and now she gets tortured while her boyfriends sits and watches and then ALMOST ACTUALLY KILLS HER IN COLD BLOOD because fuck romance am I right??? Seriously, poor thing. I was obviously relieved they found her. It was kind of sad to see Borden take down Kurt so easily being that he's supposed to be what, a psychologist and Kurt is like the assistant director of the FBI? Nice going there buddy. The Roman stuff was kind of cringeworthy really, especially at the end when Colin Sweeney douche guy shows up (the actor played a guy named Colin Sweeney on the good wife and I refuse to learn the actual name of the actor or the character) and unsurprisingly acts like a douche. I was glad to see Kurt stuck his neck out for him, though. I knew the dismissing of Nas wasn't gonna be permanent because they can't shut down a big character like that with no real justification, so I wasn't too worried there. But yeah, overall enjoyed the episode and then got back to frequency. Somewhere between episodes we ended up having a discussion about our microwave potentially being broken. My younger brother apparently burnt a bagel in it rather badly and it smelled like burnt crap so badly, and we thought it was just him being an idiot and putting it in for too long, but then as other things were microwaved and summarily burnt (like a cookie that was smoking after a few seconds, and a bag of popcorn that turned black before half the kernels were even popped) we came to the conclusion it was probably the microwave's fault, lol, so it looks like we're getting a new microwave (my parents don't really believe in trying to get things "fixed," mostly because they can afford not to). Fun fun. I think I got through episode 1x07 of frequency though, so I'm almost caught up to their mid-season hiatus. The case is definitely getting creepier, with the photo from 20 years ago showing up in the hands of the victim covered in blood and just....what the fuck this guy is really messed up, and then they found all the camp stuff and ???????? Like, ew. The timeline stuff is interesting though, I liked the dual scene with Goff where they're chasing him in 1996 while Raimy's bringing him in in 2016 and them catching him (or him being hit by a car) means he disappears from Raimy when he was right in front of her (and she may have been about to put a bullet in his head). Raimy's conclusion at the end of the episode that Frank has to kill the murderer feels like an awful bad idea though, one that could land the guy in prison for life and then we'd be really screwed when it comes to losing parents. So let's hope it doesn't quite go down like that, anyway. But yeah, liking the show quite a bit so far and excited to see where this goes. And that was about my night! Nothing particularly exciting to do tomorrow (other than it officially being the grade deadline, but that's really not all that exciting) so we'll see what comes, and until then I'm gonna get some sleep being that it's 2:30 am. Goodnight dudes. I'm thankful for all of you.
