An old friend

After years of depression Shawn is finally at his breaking point, but an old friend might be the person to save him.

The pills in his hands felt heavy, so did his heart.

When he first became a singer, he underestimated the amount of stress and anxiety that would be put on his shoulder.

And so there he stood, age 24, in his bathroom, empty bottle of pills on the marble bathroom sink and the pills in the palm of his hand.

All the little voices in his head were practically begging him not to go through with this.

He hadn’t heard those voices in nearly nine years, and now here they were.

Too late, he thought, the pills were now in his mouth and a glass of water against his lips.

Too late.

When he came to, he was in a white room, the whole place looked too sterile to even be a hospital room.

Especially because there was no medical equipment.

“Where am I?” He rasps out

“Interesting question” A voice chuckles

“Who are you?!” He jumps, turning his head over to where the voice was heard

“Yet again, another interesting question” Shawn watches as you jump down from a desk, your hair floating and your white dress only just covering your feet

“Answer the question” Shawn begs

“To start you off, you’re in between life and death” You explains “And the name’s Y/n, we attended high school together” Shawns eyes widen in realisation.

When you were 17, a teacher had found you hanging in the girls changing rooms.

“Why are you here?” Shawns shoulders slump slightly and he walks over to the window which showed nothing but pure white.

“To give you a choice” You take a hesitant step forward “When a person is on the verge of death someone from their past will appear here in the middle room to help them with a choice. Well, I’m that person”

“What’s behind the door?” Shawn turns to face you

“Confidential information that you’ll find out if you choose death” You take large strides around the room “But i’m here to try and help you convince life”

“Why?” Shawn furrows his brows

“Because people who attempt suicide can sometimes regret their decision in the middle room and wish for another chance at life and I have a sneaking suspicion that if you don’t think this through properly, you’re going to regret it”

“You don’t know me” Shawn snarls “You don’t know that pain of what I had to go through, wanna know why? Because you didn’t even make it past your 18th birthday, you don’t understand the hardships of adulthood”

“Oh yeah? Look Y/n, nobody cares about me, I’m ready to go through the afterlife door” Shawn rubs his eyes, sighing lowly

“She can’t see or hear you” You explain “This is what’s happening right now, your sister is currently being picked up by your father who is taking her directly here.”

“Take me back to the middle room” Shawn sniffs

You comply and within seconds your back in the white room.

The room disappears once again and once more you’re in a hospital.

“What?” Shawn raises a brow confused “Why are we in a hospita-”

“Come on baby, push!” Shawn whirls around and sees himself in a maternity room, holding a womans hand “Baby you’ve got this, I believe in you!”

The scene changes to a backyard where Shawn sees himself running with the biggest smile on his face, a little girl who looks identical to him sat atop his shoulders and a beaming woman holding her swollen belly.

Backyard changes to his sister announcing her engagement.

Then to his children's first day of school.

Then to their graduation.

The world around them spins and Shawn finds himself back in the middle room

“So now you’ve seen your future, what’s your choice?”

Shawn hesitates before walking over to the door of life slowly opening the door.

He stops midway.

“Will I ever see you again?” Shawn asks, craning his head to look at you

“Maybe” You shrug “I’ll always be watching over you Shawn Mendes, you were there for me when no one else was, I’m going to return the favour”

“Just remember, I won’t just be protecting you, I’ll help protect your children when you’re away”

“That’s comforting” Shawn replies “I’ll see you in the middle room, Y/n” Shawn says, taking a step past the door and disappearing

“And I’ll be here” You whisper “Waiting”

“Dad?” Skylar asks

“Yes sweetheart?” Shawn turns to face his daughter

“What if I get hurt?” She bites her lip nervously “And you won’t be there to help me?”

Shawn smiles, looking up at the sky

“Skylar, you may not see them, but someone will always be here to protect you, just like someone helped me”

“Who are they, dad?” She pushes

“An old friend” Shawn smiles, giving his daughters hand a reassuring squeeze

Margaret Katherine Kelly (née Majer, December 13, 1898 – January 6, 1990) was an American instructor of physical education for women and first coach of women's teams at the University of Pennsylvania. She was the wife of John B. Kelly Sr., three-time Olympic Gold Medal winner in rowing, and mother of Grace Kelly, actress and princess consort of Monaco, and of John B. Kelly Jr., an accomplished rower. She is also a maternal grandmother of Albert II, Prince of Monaco.

Margaret Katherine Majer was born on December 13, 1898, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of German immigrants, Carl Majer (1863-1922) and Margaretha Berg (1870-1949). Margaret and her two siblings grew up in the Strawberry Mansion section of the city. Margaret went to school and was the 1917 class president at William Penn High School for Girls with the Great-Grandmother of the Fine Brothers. Margaret, an outstanding athlete, excelled in intercollegiate swimming as an undergraduate at Temple University. Her beauty brought her jobs as a model and cover girl.

After earning her B.A. from Temple University in 1921, Majer succeeded Ethel Loring as an instructor in Physical Education for Women at the University of Pennsylvania's College for Women. She led the undergraduate women in athletic pursuits at the Kingsessing facility used as a gymnasium by Penn's female students. While teaching at Penn, Majer became the first coach of women's athletic teams at the university, organizing and training a women's basketball team and scheduling the first intercollegiate competitions for women. The women's basketball team played eight opponents in its first year, including Bryn Mawr College, Drexel University, and Temple University. Teams in gymnastics, softball, swimming, and tennis were planned for the next year. Majer also led a successful fundraising campaign to build women's tennis courts on what, for a few years, was a vacant lot on the southeast corner of Thirty-Fourth and Walnut streets. After only three years at Penn, Majer's achievements brought her well-earned celebrity as the founder of women's athletics at Penn.

Majer married Olympic oarsman John Brendan Kelly in 1924, ten years after they first met at a neighbourhood swimming pool. Kelly, the son of an Irish Catholic immigrant and ten years her senior won an Olympic gold medal for sculling in 1920. After working in the brickmaking businesses of two older brothers, he started his own business, eventually becoming a millionaire. He was also involved in politics. After serving as Democratic City chairman, he ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic candidate for mayor of Philadelphia in 1935 and would also have run for senator if his wife had not discouraged the move.

Majer's family was Lutheran, and she converted to Catholicism before the marriage. They had four children: Margaret Katherine “Peggy” (1925–1991), John Brendan, Jr. “Kell” (1927–1985), Grace Patricia (1929–1982) and Elizabeth Anne “Liz” (1933–2009).

After her children were all in school, Margaret Majer Kelly became active in various civic organizations. In 1935, she began a long association with the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, serving on its auxiliary and board of corporators before chairing the development program and then receiving an honorary doctor of letters from the school. In recognition of her contributions, the Woman's Medical College named a section of the hospital for her. She also served as a member of the Philadelphia Board of Education from 1961 to 1964 and as a leader of volunteer boards and groups associated with the Philadelphia Association for Retarded Children, Moss Rehabilitation Hospital and the Committee for Philadelphia House.

Margaret Majer Kelly died on January 6, 1990, in Linwood, New Jersey.
