FYI if you're watching MasterChef Australia, the Sri Lankan Australian contestant Savi is a friend of mine and kind of a stealth idol because everything I seem to be online (a ball-busting, bombastic, proudly brown, unapologetically fat, sexy decolonizer lady) she actually is irl. It's funny because she was a few grades below me and found me intimidating when we were in school and now I'm the one perpetually in awe of her. Do watch if you can and root for her! She's a delight!

So I started watching MasterChef: Australia and this is... sure an experience.

Clear improvements over the American version is that we get to see the dorm life! That’s honestly my biggest grievance with the American version. You only see the competitions, never what the candidates are like among themselves.

Also the showing of the so-called master classes, where the judges teach the candidates recipes and such. Very rarely does that come up with Gordon, but you always kinda assume they gotta fill the rest of the candidates’ weeks with something, including actual learning. It’s nice to actually see it.

The mindblowing part of it is the length though. There are 72 episodes. In season 1. Not total overall because it got cancelled after like 3 seasons. No. That’s the total episode count of the first season. I have a real hard time comprehending that, to be honest.

The funniest part however is absolutely the difference in mentality.

The Australian candidates are so... polite and friendly? They struggle so much with selecting who to vote out, trying real hard to only vote for the real weakest link. Meanwhile, the Americans plot strategically how to sabotage and get rid of their strongest competition.

And the dramatics! Oh, the dramatics! When the first person got voted out it was the worst, but so far (I’m halfway through this monster of a season), it’s been that way every time. How everybody has a good cry afterward and is so sad to see the voted out person go. But the extend of that?

They really talk like MasterChef: Australia takes the voted out candidates out the back and shoots them or something. After the first one got voted out, the candidates had what could only be described as a wake. Exclusively talking in the past tense, “used to be so great”, “was a good cook”. People, the person isn’t dead, they just went home???

This whole thing sure is an interesting experience, not gonna lie.
