Name one song that needs a remake/cover and one that should never be remade. Drop them in the tags.
I'm honestly curious!

controversial opinion no one can cancel me for bc it’s my birthday: my chem fans who are particularly moved by their lyricism and narrative-based storytelling would rly appreciate classic country & bluegrass music as they have a lot in common when it comes to lyrical themes, message, and even method of delivery when u consider the extremely evocative guitar styles of ray toro and country musicians like ron block and guy clark

yes i'm embarrassed to be as into merle haggard as i am but think about how you would have turned out if you spent most of the summer you were 13 in a minivan in rural alberta and british columbia with your parents and your 10 year old sister and your dad decided that all you would listen to for the duration of that trip was merle haggard bc incidentally the summer you were 13 was also the summer after merle haggard died. and then when you were 17 and stuck in lockdown and generally having a bad time bc you were supposed to be graduating high school but didn't get a graduation bc of covid and on top of that your dad was recovering from a stroke that had seriously affected his ability to play the guitar (the single thing he loved most in the world and the only job he had ever had) and generally put a strain on the family you randomly remembered the song hungry eyes bc you heard it in that minivan four years earlier and looked it up and listened to it and mentioned it to your dad and it was one of the first normal conversations you had with him since before the stroke. and then once he regained the full use of his hands he taught you mama tried on the ukulele which was your first stringed instrument. and then for all of your birthdays since then he pulls out the cds he burned with the merle haggard playlist he made when you were 13. do you think you would be normal about dad country in that situation

Easts Country Song Rec List
This is gonna lean a little mainstream, just cuz that's what I grew up with. Gonna try to pick some songs that I think are both good country songs and good exposure for the genre. Gonna try not to pick classics that have broken out of the genre (Jolene, Country Roads, etc)
God's Gonna Cut You Down - Johnny Cash Mama Tried - Merle Haggard Sleeping on the Blacktop - Colter Wall Calling Baton Rouge - Garth Brooks Mama's Broken Heart - Miranda Lambert (More under the cut)
Merry Go 'Round - Kacey Musgraves There's Your Trouble - The Chicks T-R-O-U-B-L-E - Travis Tritt Life's a Dance - John Michael Montgomery Diggin' Up Bones - Randy Travis Like the Rain - Clint Black Forever and Ever, Amen - Randy Travis What Kinda Gone - Chris Cagle American Kids - Kenny Chesney The Thunder Rolls - Garth Brooks The Fireman - George Strait Hell's Coming With Me - Fancy - Reba McEntire Southern Nights - Glen Campbell Lesson in Leavin' - Jo Dee Messina Wildflower - the JaneDear girls Fastest Girl in Town - Miranda Lambert Two Black Cadillacs - Carrie Underwood Ghost Riders in the Sky - Johnny Cash Big Iron - Marty Robbins Make It Sweet - Old Dominion
Uhhhh i genuinely have no clue if anyone cares. But here's some songs. I actually like a lot of the beat and vibe of country music - especially the stuff that leans more acoustic and less stadium. Back in college I took a swing dancing class that was also line dancing and I thought it was a lot of fun. Back then I also learned about to cowboy chacha and I don't remember it now but I remember it was fun. Idk, there are some sucky country songs, but I also think there are some bops, or some really sweet songs. I tried really hard to keep this just to regular country, and to songs that I think are like more interesting to the general public I guess. A lot of Indie Folk Rock I think has crossover with country vibes (thinking about The Crane Wives) but I didn't include them for the previously stated reason.
Uhhhhh if you like any of these songs lmk I guess. If you want I'll make a playlist.

Top 9 albums of 2023, tagged by @fxreflyes. I have the bad habit of not checking out full albums of artists even though I've fallen deeply in love with some of their songs. So, thank you for reminding me I should be checking out some full albums in 2024. I've collected some albums that I've listened to in their entirety and loved them in 2023.
They're Mama Tried/Pride in What I Am by Merle Haggard (1969), 2022 by Josiah and the Bonnevilles (2022), Little Earthquakes by Tori Amos (1992), RR by Rosalia and Rauw Alejandero (2023)

Song Review(s): Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros feat. the Wolfpack - “Cassidy,” “Mama Tried” and “China Cat Sunflower” (Live, Feb. 7, 2023)
A bad mix, a hoarse Bob Weir and generally lackluster playing greeted fans checking out the Dead man’s latest online party with the Wolf Bros and ’Pack.
The Wolfpack horns and strings did their best to improve things with colorful spotlights at the “Cassidy” coda and throughout “China Cat Sunflower.” But the din of Weir and his Bros clanging about in the background hampered the effort, Don Was and Jay Lane’s funky rhythm notwithstanding.
youtube
And the ’Pack was offstage for the small-“h” haggard “Mama Tried,” which, despite Jeff Chimenti’s spirited piano, suffered like its setlist mates from langid tempo.
The triad of given-away tracks come from the band’s Feb. 7 gig/livestream in New York and seemed to indicate an off night.
Grade card: Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros feat. the Wolfpack - “Cassidy,” “Mama Tried” and “China Cat Sunflower” (Live - 2/7/23) - C-/C/C+
