Soul Resonance

Maka Albarn, Soul “Eater” Evans and the “Soulmates Trope” done right

I am a sucker for romantic subplots, especially when they are nuanced and involve the idea of soulmates or star-crossed lovers.

In Maka and Soul’s relationship dynamic from Soul Eater, I found exactly that.

In a nutshell, what I love most about their dynamic is how Atsushi Okubo shows the growth of their bond throughout the story through very quiet and nuanced gestures, dialogue and body language.

If anyone reads this... just know that this essay is long and image heavy because it includes content from all 113 chapters. So I apologize with your internet download speed and computer’s cache ahead of time... there were just way too many cute panels not to share.

Soul Eater in a nutshell

I remember the first time I came across the Soul Eater anime more than a decade ago. I was immediately hooked with Atsushi’s interesting twist on the idea of the soul and the rather unique cast of characters that make up Soul Eater--especially the fact that the lead character in this Shonen manga is a female with male comrades who are superior to her in physical strength.

While the main underlying theme of Soul Eater is that of courage in the face of fear and the madness that ensues from seeking power for the sake of power, Atsushi also managed to weave in relationship dynamics based on soul resonance.

In other words, Atsushi was writing about a group of soulmates helping and supporting each other’s growth in the face of the challenges they faced together. Soul Eater is a character-driven story after all.

Platonic Soulmates

The word “soulmate” has been popularized and come into the mainstream lore thanks to the New Age movement. However, with the rise of the idea of soulmates into the mainstream so came the propensity to romanticize the idea of soulmates.

In the true sense of the word, soulmates are not just meant to become romantic partners, but rather, soulmates are the people who come into your life to help you grow as a person. This means soulmates can be friends, lovers, parents, siblings, beloved pets, or even the antagonist figures in your life.

Atsushi does a great job of depicting the platonic nature of soulmates when he shows the care and affection that Maka and her comrades have for one another.

In particular, he shows characters like Black Star speaking of and demonstrating care for Kid, Maka and Soul. But you also have the bond between Kid and the Thompson sisters.

In Soul Eater speak, the fact that these characters’ souls resonate with one another, brings them closer together.

Romantic Soulmates

But what happens when that bond becomes romantic in nature?

As I mentioned earlier, I am a sucker for romantic subplots. And while I may be projecting onto Maka and Soul and idealizing their relationship, I like to think that they have both a platonic and romantic soulmate bond.

Just so you know, if you are an anime-only fan, I will also be focusing on the manga since the end of the anime is not canon. Beware of spoilers!

When it comes to relationships, it’s all about the Soul

Right from the start, even though Atsushi spends a lot of time on fan service, he also presents the idea that, in simple terms, the soul, or a person’s true essence is more important than their physical appearance.

The dynamic between Maka and Soul is interesting in that a person’s soul essence is something that not only goes beyond their body’s physical appearance, but also beyond chemistry at the level of the personality.

This is also obvious from the start because, even if Soul likes to look like a “cool” guy while Maka is more of an earnest person and a book-worm, they are able to work together rather well by matching their respective soul’s wavelengths.

Interestingly enough, this difference in their personalities also becomes a source of conflict during the Salvage arc when Maka feels insecure that she doesn’t understand some of Soul’s personality well enough, like his interest in jazz music. She therefore doubts that she is right to be paired up with him as a weapon technician.

To Soul, however, their personalities being different is a non-issue as he has complete trust in their bond. Not only are Maka and Soul incredibly comfortable with each other, they simply understand each other on a level no other character in the story get either of them.

Atsushi shows this through small gestures like Maka holding Soul’s hand when he wakes up from a nightmare after Chrona wounded him fatally.

A gesture which Soul returns by squeezing Maka’s hand right back.

Dammit they’re just so damn cute...

We also see that Maka feels comfortable enough to hold Soul while she cries. And not only is she comfortable holding onto Soul for strength, he also willingly makes himself available to Maka as a “shoulder to cry and lean on”.

I just can’t with how fcking cute they are with each other dammit...

Another small gesture I loved is when Maka is affected by the Clown’s madness and Soul helps her come back to her senses because he knows the real Maka is beneath the mask she’s put on.

This is one of several times Soul and Maka help each other come back to their senses.

Another favorite is, again, during the Salvage Arc when they get separated from the group in the chapter for Sloth in the Book of Eibon.

After they each face their insecurities (they are both a part of each other’s vision in different ways), they come together again.

The Weapon and the Weapon Technician bond

Another theme that is prevalent in the story is that of the Weapon always deferring all decisions and importance to the Weapon Tech. As such, Weapons are shown as always agreeing to whatever the Tech says or sometimes risking their lives for them.

On second thought, however, we mostly only see Soul as the one willing to not only protect Maka, but also risk his life in order to keep her safe.

I am wondering if this protector trait is one that Atsushi only gave the males in the story seeing as we also see Black Star protecting Tsubaki during the Youtou arc, which is the opposite dynamic because in their case we have the Tech protecting the Weapon.

But other than that, although Weapons are shown saying they will protect their Tech, we don’t really see other Weapons risking their lives for their Tech in the same way we see Soul protecting Maka.

Regardless, it is implied that in order to work together, the Weapon and the Tech have to have a strong bond.

Based on this idea alone, that makes Soul and Maka platonic soulmates. They’re just two “friends” or comrades who are growing, maturing and pushing each other to grow together.

But I suspect there’s more to Maka and Soul than their relationship as Weapon and Tech.

I dare say, they are attracted to each other physically as well.

Even if Soul keeps picking on Maka about her lack of sex appeal, Atsushi shows us Soul’s “type” during the Salvage arc when they go into the Book of Eibon to rescue Kid.

Surprisingly, as a female, Soul looks a lot like Maka in that she’s not voluptuous like the other female cast members and acts like a princess just the way Maka’s girly personality can be entitled.

We can say the same for Maka’s male version as a guy in that boy-Maka is twinkish and rigid like Soul.

This particular instance aside, Maka also Maka-Chops Soul for looking “cool” while in Russia. The kicker is that she was blushing, meaning: did she feel more than annoyance and admiration for Soul when he overcame the Black Blood’s madness?

So... is there more to Maka and Soul than a platonic soulmate relationship?

Maka wants more than friendship from Soul

I mean... if you don’t think all of the panels I’ve shown are super romantic then I am not sure what would convince you.

FFS, most of what Soul says to Maka is borderline romantic...

That being said, I kind of have to wonder when their dynamic changed.

I have the feeling that when they met, their souls recognized each other--that’s what soulmates do. However, their relationship started as strictly platonic because their personalities are so different.

As they grew closer from spending time together as a Weapon and Tech, I dare say, somewhere along their time together, they both developed romantic feelings for each other.

Let’s not forget that Maka’s parents were once a Weapon and a Tech duo before they got married, so the predisposition for a Weapon and their Tech to fall in love with each other is already there.

The first time we’re shown that Maka is interested in Soul’s affection is when she learns how to use Soul to fly after turning him into a Deathscythe. Not only does she imply she wishes he’d refer to her as an angel, she’s blushing while she tells him this. Thus implying Maka wishes Soul was more overt with his displays of affection the way Ox is with Kim.

We learn Maka’s soul is a special kind of soul and that as a result they may be able to manifest angel wings--something Maka loves the idea of.

Soul initially finds this annoying because he can’t picture Maka as a “cute” angel.

In the end, Soul ends up relenting and giving her the cute and fluffy wings she wants even if they are useless for battle. He even calls her Angel-chan to prove his point he knows her best and she’s not a “cutesy angel”.

And perhaps that’s what I love most about how their dynamic/romance is portrayed. It isn’t over the top declarations of love, but rather, a quiet and complete understanding of each other depicted through small gestures.

In order to increase their soul resonance, Soul and Maka have to touch. But the most important gesture, in my eyes, is all of the hand-holding going on between these two.

They seriously have me swooning over here...

While they are shown holding hands here and there at the beginning of the story, their hand-holding actually increases towards the later chapters. They seriously have an interesting familiarity with each other like that of a couple that has been together for ages.

I also wonder whether Maka’s love language is physical displays of affection. This would explain why she Maka-chops him often too.

Towards the end of the manga, Soul and Maka face what is perhaps the biggest challenge to their relationship and romantic bond--the fear of connection actually drives them apart.

Atsushi depicts this through Chrona getting in the way of Soul and Maka, as well as Black Star and Tsubaki, from being able to resonate with each other. For Chrona who had suffered from early childhood trauma from neglect and abandonment, bonding and connecting with others was a source of fear and distress.

Fortunately, they are both well aware of their soulful bond and willing to fight for their connection and that is ultimately what makes them stronger as a Weapon and Tech duo.

Perhaps in drawing Soul and Maka resting their foreheads together, other than it being a cute “gesture”, Atsushi meant to show that the source of their strength as a duo lies upon the fact that Maka gets Soul and Soul gets Maka.

Which brings me full circle to Maka wanting more than Soul’s friendship. Towards the end of the manga, she’s even fearful of the thought of being split up from him if he decided not to re-enroll in Shibusen.

What I love is that, throughout the whole manga, Soul demonstrates his affection for Maka in his own way--by showing his gratitude for having Maka in his life every opportunity he gets through small gestures. In fact, as I have shown, Soul is always reassuring her that he trusts her and will always be there for her.

So Maka doesn’t need to ask for Soul to call her an angel the way Ox does with Kim, because to Soul, Maka means more than a word like angel could ever begin to explain.

And perhaps that’s what I love most about this pairing. For Soul, it was always about Maka’s soul and his connection to it. He doesn’t need to tell her how he feels, because Soul knows that Maka knows how he feels.

Even so, Soul never hesitates to show his affection by reminding her of it.

In the end, together, through their soul resonance, they create music. A music and soul resonance that they will continue to share with the world.

The “Romantic Soulmates Trope” done right

I think it is possible to argue that Soul and Maka’s bond is strictly platonic. However, I cannot help but see the romantic undertones. Again, it could be the hopeless romantic in me.

That being said, if this is not just my interpretation of their relationship, but rather Atsushi purposely created their dynamic to be one of romantic and platonic soulmates, I have to admit he’s done a masterful job of it.

In other words, where Atsushi did not use nuance in the majority of the story, he used it to depict how special Soul and Maka’s bond is.

Where other Shonen manga (or manga in general) depict romantic relationships between characters with one character pining after the other, Atsushi brings a refreshing take on romance in that he doesn’t need to be in your face about Soul and Maka having a special bond.

Soul and Maka’s love and affection for each other does not need to be over-the-top confessions of love like in Shojo manga either. There is no need for flowery backgrounds or sitting under a sakura tree or sharing their lunch.

Rather, Atsushi shows us they are in love with each other through small, nuanced gestures, dialogue, and their body language.

I only re-read Soul Eater for Soul and Maka

Well damn...

I initially only wanted to find the panels that I used at the beginning of the article. I am not entirely sure why I decided to read the whole manga but I am glad I did because, while I absolutely love those two panels, they are better enjoyed when in context of Soul and Maka’s relationship as a whole.

Another reason I’m glad I did a full re-read of the manga is that the manga is full of little moments between Soul and Maka that had me swooning like a 14-year-old girl.

In the end, Soul and Maka re-awakened in me a desire that I have a tendency to bury deep within myself--the desire to connect with others at a soul level. More specifically a romantic partner.

In that way, Soul Eater will always hold a special place in my heart as that one manga that reminded me what I appreciate and want from my romantic relationships.

AMA Transcript: Nothing Compares 2 U

@makapedia joined the AMA party to talk with us about her 2016 Resbang, Nothing Compares 2 U! Here’s some of what went down!!

Q: You wrote a good chunk of your fic set in the nineties. Was there anything that was especially hard about that?

makapedia: Writing the fic in the 90s was hard, if just because I was six when the 90s ended, so I did not remember as much as I thought I would, so I had to research a little history.

Q: What inspired you to think of this premise/AU?

makapedia: I thiiink I was talking to Madi? And spitballing ideas, as I do, at her, and it just spiralled from there. She enabled me hard.

Q: I did love your 90s references though. You mentioned some stuff and I would have flashbacks. It was all good.

makapedia: I didn't even get to write the scene I had originally envisioned for the AU, that's so weird. I wanted more Tamagotchi scenes. I wanted Maka to leave her precious child Tamagotchi in Soul's hands and he was going to take his job as caretaker Very Seriously while she was homeworking.

Q: [This] fic was an emotional ride and so empathetically written and incredibly nuanced. What was the most emotional thing for you to write? What would you do to cheer yourself up after a difficult scene?

makapedia: The most emotional thing for me to write was definitely, um, towards the end of the first portion of the fic? I gave Soul and Maka both parts of myself in this fic, and Soul really got the raw, late teens anxiety and fear of the world and his future, and it was both easy? and hard? for me to write, especially since it was through Maka's eyes, and I could not come out and say "hey, he is depressed and unmedicated and on a downward spiral" because she just didn't understand it. I would listen to Spice Girls to cheer myself up, though.

Q: Your approach to sexuality and to mental illness is amazing and hit me in the feels. Pls discuss any extra commentary youve ever wanted to discuss on these elements of your writing.

makapedia: I don't think I even went into this thinking it was going to have such commentary on sexuality? Uh, and especially the drama/throne we put sexuality on as a culture. I think the fic really evolved that way? And I think definitely even adding as much asexual commentary in it was extra. The mental illness thing was definitely planned and I wanted to make a point of showing someone who does struggle with depression/anxiety/other taking his life into his hands and getting help and still being able, as an adult, to have relations and be happy, and be a good partner. I wish I could have shown more of that at the end, but it is what it is.

Q: What is your personal favorite scene to write, or just based on how it turned out, or whatever!

makapedia: My favorite scene to write?? Maybe was towards the end, I had a lot of fun writing spiteful angry Maka kicking in the men's bathroom door and scaring the shit out of Soul. But based on how the scene turned out, i think the smut smut scene was my favorite. It was a Long fic, longer than I anticipated or planned it being, so a lot of it just melts together in my head now.

Q: Smut scenes, how do those go?

makapedia: LOL. Are you asking me how to write smut?

Q: Yes.

makapedia: I love you so much. I am Disgustingly Demisexual and super vanilla about things, and a lot of my smut focuses more on the feeling and gross headspace than the physical part? It's easier for me that way. I am a tiny ace virgin I am terrible with smut, I have people Fooled.

Q: Pls elaborate on your Very Important Decision to give Soul Batman sheets.

makapedia: Every cool guy I have in my life really aggressively loves Batman. That was it. He seemed appropriately Edgy (or False Edgy, w/e) for Soul.

Q: I really loved your characterization of the parents in this story - both Soul's and Maka's. Did you find one set of parents easier to write and if so, why??

makapedia: Oh man. I mean, they were there but also weren't, yeah? Only Soul's dad and Maka's mom made the cut, and Maka's mom is always a mixed bag for me because we do know very little about her in canon, whereas Soul's parents are always an empty canvas, for the most part. All I know about Maka's mom is she dumped Spirit for cheating and she is "like a bear" according to Maka loool so I guess I just kind of made her a very opinionated force of nature, sort of looming over and leading Maka's future, but she's hard for me to write. I could do whatever with Soul's dad and no one could tell me I was wrong. Too much power for one girl.

Q: Was there a specific 90s artifact you wanted to include that didn't make the cut?

makapedia: Black*Star in JNCO jeans.

Q: Where did the inspiration for the Liz jealousy side plot come from? Because that KILLED me lmao.

makapedia: The Liz thing was planned but also not to the degree it ended up happening? Mostly I wanted to write about Maka's insecurity, and work through her misogyny and jealousy issues and I thought it'd be interesting to have it be a close friend, I guess? But then it evolved into Soul questioning his identity in the background and coming to terms with like, realizing he was ace? Also I wanted Maka to be weird and uncomfortable and maybe even a little jealous later, when Liz had invited him to her wedding, but some of that got lost in translation.

Q: The entire leadup to and all of the Halloween party was a gift, where did the inspiration from that come from? (Soul alone with weiner dogs, bless.)

makapedia: I really, really wanted to write Maka as baby spice and it just snowballed from there. SHE WANTED TO BE SPORTY SPICE SO BADLY. Soul is me. Hides in the back room at a party and chills with tiny dogs.

Q: Why the 90s?

makapedia: I think it was because of my own nostalgia? And also feeling like I missed out on all of the turn of the century weirdness, because I WAS so young when the 90s ended and the 2000s began. It was like a time period AU but not drastic enough for me to have to really change everything and research language and clothing and trends and culture. It was recent enough but also like... long enough ago for other people my age or a little older to be like oh, man, remember the 90s, why did we all part our hair like that? The fic really did start out very silly in my heart but then everything got dark and sad.

Q: I was gonna ask, where did this idea come from? Did something really spur it on, other than your 90s nostalgia? Was the time gap thing always there? Cause the way you entered in the future and had a good portion of the story in the past was excellent and gripped my attention.

makapedia: So, originally when I was blarging to Madi about a 90s au I think I realized it couldn't just be memes, it needed a plot? And I'd always really wanted to write like a post breakup fic where the ship Gets Back Together at a wedding and then bam kablam. The "outline" for the fic is just bare bones for the fic and then some jokes I wanted to get in. Originally I'd wanted the chapters to go back and forth, 98 to 08 and such, but I ended up settling with a big 98 portion so it felt more cohesive. Pluuus I kind of like how it sets you up to hurt and then you wade through the beginning cute with just, this sense of oh god, no, what goes wrong?

Q: I loved the character dynamics between everybody everything felt very fitting like 'yep that is so how they would be.'

makapedia: ;__; I'm so glad. Bro*Star's frosted tips.

Q: I wanted to kill him when he did the freaking card trade thing.

makapedia: LOL that boy has no tact. That cloyster joke was in the outline.

Q: Did you have any characters that you sat there going 'okay what to do with you' or were all the characters falling into place nicely from your perspective? Was Black*Star's gutter mind easy to fall into or not? XD

makapedia: hhhaaaAAA, Death the Kid was mysteriously Not There in the 90s. SORRY, KIDDO. Black*Star is so easy and fun to write, but I think I'd write 90s skater DTK.

Q: Oh well, [Kid] got to make the best reference of the whole fic lol.

makapedia: He did, he got my favorite line. I think he spoke one line and it was my favorite. 70k for an I Write Sins Not Tragedies reference. The slow realization that that album came out in 2006 and therefore Existed was the best.

Q: On a scale of one to 10, how excited were you when you realized this?

makapedia: 10. 11. That joke got me through writing the last chapter.

Q: Was there a scene in particular that went a really different direction than what you expected?

makapedia: So I don't plot ahead like... as often as i should, hhhhhhaaa. So for a lot of the middle I just hit cruise control and went wherever it took me. But a lot of the stuff about virginity and like, terrible sex ed and worrying that it would hurt a ton and she'd bleed definitely weren't things I thought I'd write. I did not intend for the First Time (tm) scene to happen then and there but then... surprise dongle! Dicks out for the ship's swan song.

Q: What song did you listen to the most while writing this?

Q: Linger by The Cranberries, I think. A big Mood. And You Oughta Know, for appropriate Anger. Aaand Nothing Compares 2 U, of course. Tho I do wonder how many younger fandom bebs don't.... know that is a song title reference.

Q: What was your favourite part of the fic?

makapedia: I think... maybe the Halloween party, because Maka is such an unreliable narrator in this fic and she is so Clueless (haaaaaa, jokes) and it was the moment she Finally realized what Liz was trying to do. Also the moment where Soul realizes too was fun.

Q: Did you intend to write Liz as the actual soma fandom or was that accidental? (Complete with our adoration of Tsubaki.)

makapedia: LOL It was a little intentional, I guess, because she was Soul's close friend in the fic. But like, Maka misunderstanding everything just kept getting worse so it was a bit accidental. God I love Tsubaki. Liz has good taste. I don't super ship it a whole lot but I still wanted to try my hand at it. I wanted them to be happy and cute.

Q: What about your LEAST favorite scene!

makapedia: The breakup scene was hard for me to write and I'm still not happy with how it came out. It still feels forced in my heart, but I had to move on.

Q: WHAT'S NEXT?

makapedia: Iiiiii already have an idea of what I'm gonna do for Resbang next year so I cannot share that, buuuut I think I'm going to continue writing Not Lovers, weird mermaid AU I started recently? and probably more AUs. This is the year I write Too Many SoMa AUs, mark my words.

Q: Okay so Soul and Liz doing the do sort of killed my heart. Was that always planned?

makapedia: Hhhhaaaa that was planned ahead of time, I guess? I wanted Maka's jealousy to have some sort of basis. This tiny demi thing who can't wrap her head around sleeping with someone like that.

Q: It broke my heart but I found it so... realistic? Like I totally know people who've experienced that, and lots of people don't have their first time with their soulmate or true love or whatev so like it HURT but also... so, so true.

makapedia: Exactly, that was what I was going for. <3 Aaaand pushing my ace agenda, lol.

Q: Correct me if I read the thing wrong, but crona got adopted by Sid and Nygus??

makapedia: Iiiii do not remember. LOL, HECK. PLEASE.... HOLD.... /FRANTICALLY GOOGLES OWN FIC. YES. OKAY. Good I was like, I think I wrote that??? But then I haven't read that part in so long. I feel like people so often just throw Stein and Marie into the role of Crona's parents and I think I wanted to mix it up.

Q: I just... Crona living with Black☆Star had me in tears.

makapedia: Also that, exactly. You can bet your butt that weenie was probably Crona's dog, but Black*Star is the one who dressed it in a costume. I also had fun writing Soul and Crona bonding over Pokemon. Nerd shit. Soul, excitedly: did you hear they're making a video game? Maka is not as well versed in Pokemon as these nerds. Soul's probably laying there in that room with the weenie playing Tetris.

Q: That visual is gold.

makapedia: I also wanted to write Black*Star taking out Soul's ankles with a Skip-It. But alas.

Mama wants an update of Maka’s life, but there’s a severe lack of anything interesting to report. She’s stuck in an eternal rut, and the only excitement in her life is her steadily disappearing underwear.

Thankfully, her cute neighbor gets her in touch with the panty-stealing culprit. Soul is sometimes evasive and secretive, though he makes up for it by showing her what it’s like to have fun on a regular basis. Just as Maka thinks she has exciting news to report to Mama, Soul turns out to be hiding more than exotic pets in the bathroom. The fake-married, secret dating AU you didn’t ask for.

[T] Moments of Impact [Soul/Black Star]

A move halfway across the country gives Soul Evans a far different fresh start than he expected when he falls for his best friend’s childhood friend, Black Star. Through good food, theoretical conversations, and lame college parties, Soul and Black Star turn into the type of couple that makes movie theater audiences swoon.As fate would have it though, a truck rear ends their car on a cold night in December, and sends Soul flying headfirst through the windshield - taking all his memories of the last five and a half years with him.
