uh i watched this and i think its interesting and two things i wanna add onto this is that
i think its interesting that the animal crossing model went from a focus on single player to multiplayer which carried over to new horizons
with very little to do solo because they want you to play with friends. but they neutered multiplayer in nh so much from new leaf that ironically it kind of leaves you with a net zero empty game. because the feature they want you to use the most also has the least content. which is why im not excited about the roost because that will be fun for all of one second when you sit down with your friends, take a picture, and then never step foot in there again
secondly they hypothesize that nintendo is gradually turning the series into a gacha for young girls which i feel is somewhat evident in nh but primarily pocket camp
im not the kind to expect pandering like this and i def dont even identify with the masculine id much less do i like styles associated with it
but youll notice that a lot of the times new content (again mainly in pocket camp) is as feminine or cute/pretty as possible. even more gender neutral options tend to feel like theyre leaning for something that still feels remarkably feminine and strips a lot of "cool" or even "scary" styled content from the game (until just now for nh at the end of the games life cycle)
remember prom season when there were like three unique new dresses and then just one type of new tuxedo
in pocket camp they consistently add new wigs and outfits which feel exclusively geared toward a feminine style (i know the identities are more nuanced than this and that masc and fem are being polarized when they shouldnt be but this is nintendo which lacks that nuance before sasha where we only had stereotype gracie)
how many cookies do they have for furniture of lavish castles or libraries, fairies and ice princesses with matching dressed and MAYBE a shirt (i seem to remember i think it was the vampire outfits where they released a feminine wig, dress, shoes, and stockings and then just a hat shoes and suit top with no matching pants for some reason)
i dont care about dresses i dont have anything against them but it takes a lot from the self expression in the game when you only get content in the form of pretty frilly dresses
thereve been generally gender neutral fortune cookies like for a movie theater or marching band but have they ever gone into "traditionally masculine" territory? is there a sports set? maybe like a robot factory?
AGAIN I CANT STRESS ENOUGH none of these are exclusively "for boys" or "for girls" but nintendo shows a strong proclivity for what is traditionally in our cultures considered as "for girls"
EDIT: you know what just occurred to me i bet the reason why the vampire outfit didnt come with pants is because it was only meant to be worn by villagers who dont wear pants. i bet thats it. it wasnt for the player it was for an animal
i was also thinking: a lot of the like "boy" wigs felt like they were still. designed for what would appeal to girls. like a lot of them looked like what might be seen on kpop members
this isnt about hating women or saying theyre ruining animal crossing rather that nintendos myopic view of what girls are and want hurts everyone involved. because they might not want all that too. maybe they just want a regular patterned outfits without a dozen hearts and bows decorating them. theyre cute sure but maybe we dont... want a heart and bow on... EVERYTHING
