Kálman (Koloman) 1095-1116

was supposed to become a priest, but because Arpáds gonna Arpád, he stole the throne from his brother Álmos, whom he subsequently blinded and imprisoned together with his son (who was a literal child)

otherwise a pretty cool dude, called Learned or Lawgiver because of all the laws he has passed, more than any other king of Hungary in fact (in medieval history I presume, I refuse to believe neither Maria Theresa nor Joseph II. have him beat)

he called a synod to fight the corruption in the church, which is nice

let the crusaders trough Hungary, but when they started making mess (as crusaders wont to do), he kicked them out

gained the throne of Croatia and for administrative reasons abolished the duchy of Nyitra, no I am not bitter

also I'd be remiss if I didn't also mention the hillarious bit of drama that is his marriage to Kievan princess Euphemia, basically he proclaimed her to be an adulteress and sent her back home, where she gave birth to a son named Boris, who then proceeded to be a pain in the ass of his Hungarian (alleged) relatives for his whole life by attempting to claim the throne

I.Károly (Karol I.) - but be honest, we all know him as Károly/Karol Róbert 1301-1342

spent the first few years on the throne fending off antikings, namely Václav III., who then gave up and passed his claim onto Otto of Bavaria, whom Károly subsequently defeated

upon his ascencion to the throne country basically ruled by the feuding nobles, also know in this period as oligarchs, he managed to consolidate his reign and regain most of the royal power trough a combination of warfare (Rozgony/Rozhanovce 1312 HELLOOO) and appeasing them with court functions

I don't even know where to START with this guy's reforms - seriously, he minted the first gold coins in Hungary, instated the banderial system (levy of the royal army from the soldiers drafted by the cities, comitates and nobles, look it was a big deal, just trust me), reformed the administation of the country and so, so much more I can't get into; basically, this man was Maria Theresa before Maria Theresa

he mostly avoided wars because of the bad shape of Hungarian treasury, though he did lead a couple of them (conflicts with Venice and Wallachia)

initiator of the 1335 meeting in Visegrád with John of Luxembourg and Casimir III. of Poland; basically, we have him to thank for the name Visegrád Four

(admin is from Košice, so he has just inherently won in her eyes because of Rozhanovce)

Put the champaigne on ice, everyone, we are at the final step of our journey! By this time next week, we will know who is the very best Romanov, as found out by the most scientific method you could possibly use - a tumblr poll. The winner (along with a winner of every bonus poll) will be announced in a big celebratory post that will be pinned as sign that this epic competition has finally come to an end. Consider this a reminder that this week is your final chance to participate in propaganda, antipropaganda and all the other shenenigans that come with holding a monarchical poll on tumblr. This blog may end up endorsing other polls (look forward especially for our favourite weirdo Alexander I. on the Napoleonic Sexymen Tournament), but this will be effectively the very end of its active service.

As mentioned in a previous post, the two final candidates for the Best Romanov aren't fighting just for the title, but for the very definition of the term. The thing is, you can theoretically see both of them as Best Romanov, just by completely different metrics. Are we going by moral criteria, at which point we must endorse the least autocratic ruler Russia had untill... Maybe Gorbachev? Look the point is, the bar is on the ground here, and Alexander II. stepped over it.

Or are we searching for a ruler that best embodied Romanov traditions of dynastic drama, autocracy, imperialism and very, very light reformism, while closing a book on the whole era of interdynastic shenenigans (Pavel I. and the dekabrists aside, because dynasty members didn't actually participate in those - at least in any capacity that we can prove) and being that quintesential Romanov creature - a toxic girlboss?

Both of these people are still well-regarded, for the most part (for a Russian monarch I mean). Both of them were incredibly sexy, as is the Romanov way. You could (and should, seriously, post propaganda, people!) make the case for both of them being deserving of the title. But there is only one crown of Monomakh and one throne (unless you're Ivan V. and Pyotr I., we guess). There can be only one victor.

So... Who *is* the best Romanov monarch, really?

Regarding the second revival round!

as voted in previous housekeeping polls, this round will only last 24h as opposed to 1 week, and round 1 losers (with the exception of sasha who's already been revived once) will also be competing.

that said! unless im very bad at math and forgot someone, that leaves us with 12 contestants, and a poll can only have a total of 10 options. so i will be dividing Revival Round 2 into 2 parts, with 6 contestants each. the seeding will be randomized. the 2 winners will then face each other to decide who will be returning for round 3!

revival round 2 (both parts) will go live on monday 1pm est!

a literal saint - though not because he was particularly nice, mostly because of the fact that he was the first Magyar leader to be a proper Christian (unlike his dad Géza, who did get baptized, but still retained some of the pagan customs); plus he actively spread Christianity among Magyars (founding of the first Hungarian bishoprics, the one church for every 10 villages rule etc.), for better or for worse

created the basis for later Hungarian administration, including the minting of first Hungarian coins and the first law code in Hungarian history

helped Byzantines conquer Bulgaria

infamous for imprisoning and blinding his cousin and successor Vazul (chronicles blame his wife's influence, but they're probably just being sexist)

IV.Béla (Belo IV.) 1235-1270

called "second founder" of Hungary for his part in the country's recovery from the Mongolian invasion (which is why I put him against the first founder of Hungary, geddit?); one of the longest ruling Hungarian monarchs

feuded with basically everyone on his court, from the nobles (whom he famously didn't even let sit in his presence) to his stepmom, whom he apparently imprisoned (it's not clear from my notes what she did); to be fair, he wasn't wrong in thinking the nobility needs to get knocked down a notch, I mean he did have to ascend the throne after fucking II.András "Hungary's own John Lackland"

hella important for the development of administration of Hungary, especially cities; he invited the Germans over to repopulate the country after the Mongolian invasion and gave their settlements the first city rights

also as part of his recovery programme - he built A LOT of castles, especially stone ones

in the second half of his rule, he led "more active foreign policy", read "participated in some wars"; namely War of the Babenberg Succession, on the losing side

In this match, we are pitting the first and last Romanov ruler against each other. Both are supremely lame men that were heavily influenced by shady clergymen (the difference of course being that one of the clergymen was their hypercompetent dad and the other a grifter, or rather a succession of grifters said ruler's wife brought home).
