Theravada Buddhist New Year this year began on 27th April - in contrast to the Mahayana New Year that was back in January. Songkran and the other solar new year celebrations in the last couple of weeks share common Theravadin roots, but unlike those which have mostly been fixed around about April 13th, or happen when the Sun enters Aries, this new year begins on the first full moon of April and lasts for three days. Posted @withregram • @mexicaliblues On Tuesday, many of our Buddhist friends celebrated Theravada New Year. The symbolic elements of this celebration—sand and water—are simple. They are also particularly meaningful to all of us at Mexicali Blues. The tidal Damariscotta River runs right past our headquarters and many of our stores and homes are located on Maine’s coast. We are surrounded by sand and water and we know their powers of healing and renewal well. In this Buddhist tradition, each grain of sand represents a mark on your karma—a deed or thought you regret, or an action that harmed another. Buddhists in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia build sand mounds at monasteries and along riverbanks in the days preceding the New Year. On Theravada New Year, these sand markers are washed away by waves, tides or other means, cleansing and renewing karma. Statues and images of the Buddha are bathed in the waters and monks and elders are sprinkled with water as well. Buddha eyes are often seen on beautiful stupas like this one in Nepal, representing (surprise!) the eyes of the Buddha. The question-mark-type symbol that makes the “nose” is the Nepali character for the number 1, symbolizing unity and the path towards enlightenment in the Buddha’s teaching. Above this is the swirling third eye, symbolizing the wisdom of the Buddha. It’s a Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse in Cancer today! With the sun conjunct Mercury, this eclipse brings our attention to communication, although that communication is anything but clear. We’re feeling emotional and having difficulty making sense of what we hear. It’s also a big time of false communication being put forth by unreliable sources, so CHECK YOUR FACTS before you believe what you’re told. We are easily mislead by words that activate our emotional biases, and the eclipse opposite Pluto makes us extra vulnerable to being manipulated and controlled. We need to be careful to not get carried away and overly convinced by anything external right now. If something is true today, it will still be true in a week when we can process it with more reasoned understanding. ✨ While communication from and with others can be confusing, there is deep clarity to be found when we look within. Where have we been ignoring the truth of our hearts in order to satisfy the needs of others? We are each being called to connect with our intuition and move towards our purpose on this planet. How do we connect with this when we’re feeling oh-so-emotional? Lean into somatic practices that can help you come back into your body and move through whatever is coming up. Maybe that’s yoga, EFT tapping, dance, rolling around on the floor, or taking a hot bath. Allow any feelings that arise to be with you, without judgement. Whatever you’re experiencing now is ok, and no emotion is permanent. It is important to not repress or deny your feelings, and you are invited to look at them with curiosity rather than being swept away.
