MAERAD OF PELLINOR - The Books of Pellinor
Tumblr media
PROPAGANDA:
Maerad is a beutifully flawed character. She makes mistakes, is in the wrong, and hurts other people. But she is filled with such compassion and love for others that she grows from this and gives everything to those she cares about.
Also, she made a grown man panic over a period and that was hilarious.

Even now, ten years later, people are still using the phrase "father figure" to describe the most polite, equal, and respectful romantic relationships in the history of YA fiction, and it's just like???! Way to tell on yourselves that you have weird relationships with your fathers.
I blocked them already, but someone used "father figure" to describe Maerad's emotions for Cadvan from the Books of Pellinor?!
I just finished rereading The Naming and never once did Maerad ever think of him as a father figure, and anyone who could think of their relationship like that after reading the scene right after the council meeting in Norloch is deluding themselves.
It was even worse ten years ago actually, when I had to be blasted by pornographic content of a 15-year old male Shounen hero and his mentor figure, while also being told that a girl and her canon love interest had a "father/daughter" relationship, because Tumblr pretends to like healthy, loving romance while actually having no idea what that looks like.
Like, having read the Books of Pellinor right after Eon and Eona (the Dragoneye Duology? Kingdom Of The Celestial Dragons? Did that series ever even have a proper title?) was an awakening, a breath of fresh air!! Eona's choice of love interests were between a bloodthirsty rapist and a man who attempted to murder her by choking her after she did something he perceived as disrespecting his manhood. (She got with the attempted murderer. I was pretty upset, but at least the other guy was dead.)
The worst that happens between Maerad and Cadvan was a few arguments, where both of them have both good and bad points, and extreme emotional trauma caused by tragic life stories.
Maerad and Cadvan are still the best romance in YA fiction, and if that's the kind of relationship y'all have with your dads, I'd be a little worried.

✨- which fictional character (book, show, or movie) do you relate to most?
This is tough because I rarely find myself relating to characters. I dont see myself in characters often, if at all. But I think, in terms of a longing to find a home and belong then i'd say Maerad from the books of Pellinor. I think I can relate to her.

Dear Yuletide Writer
I’m mihrsuri here and on AO3 (also a note that I’m borrowing from another letter - I absolutely welcome treats.
This letter is designed as a guide if it’s helpful for you to have a guide - if it isn’t helpful or doesn’t spark joy then go where joy is sparked! I promise I will be delighted by it. However I do have some triggers that are absolute hard line no’s  - I’ll list those below.
(I’ve also borrowed some phrasing from @beatrice-otter‘s letter because I found it useful <3).
Triggers: alpha beta omega, bdsm, daddy/daughter/little girl play, descriptions of dirty rooms, medical play, scat/water play, apocalypses/dystopian fic with no hope and explicit depictions of child sexual abuse and child prostitution.
Please no incest or darkfic. I define "darkfic" as stuff where there's a lot of suffering and no hope even at the end and all the characters are terrible. Angst with a happy ending is fine, I enjoy it, but there's gotta be a payoff. Even an ambiguous ending is fine! But there has to be some note of grace or redemption or hope somewhere, it can't just be "people are awful and the world sucks, the end."
Likes:
*relationships where the people in them trust each other, value each other and know each other's strengths and weaknesses and how to work together with them. *COMPETENCE PORN. ALL THE COMPETENCE PORN. *Stories about people making things and surviving and building/rebuilding, in spite of challenges. *Stories about surviving and then thriving in spite of damage. *Found families. ALL THE FOUND FAMILIES. *Poly families with kids. *AUs. ALL THE GLORIOUS AUs. * To borrow/quote from a friend: men who love, value and appreciate their wives as intelligent, capable people with sense etc, major bonus points for if that woman actually presents "traditional femininity" -Awesome women who present as traditionally feminine and are wives, mothers and AWESOME. -OT3s who are all in love with each other is just ABSOLUTELY MY CAKE -People who upon being presented with a loved one as hostage situation knows that the loved one would absolutely murder them if they gave in. And they refuse to be held responsible for what the villain will do. -People getting on, talking to each other, having a community around them. -Ethical, kind and decent people who are NOT SILLY OR NAIVE.
-stories about living with and surviving trauma, especially rape and how you can still have kindness and good even with heavy scars.  *Dying for the greater good with grace and dignity *Mirror Universes! (Particularly 'crosses over with regular universe') *Multimedia stories
My AO3 bookmarks might be useful for this if you want to research further (also the tag ‘lils fic wishlist’ on this tumblr)
Fandoms:
Pellinor: I will admit to liking a good hurt/comfort fic featuring Cadvan. I’m also very fond of extremely feral protective Maerad but just in general, world building about Pellinor would be amazing.  And okay, this is another niche prompt which again, please feel free to ignore but I am so interested in the What If of ‘what if OT3 between Saliman/Cadvan/Ceredin who lived (I loved them in the bonus short story The Friendship) - what would that look like in the time of The Gift’ I would also love some Cadvan centric hurt/comfort or a story of the friendship Saliman and Cadvan built over the years. But honestly, go with what inspires you. Also in multimedia terms - did you want to write ‘in universe academic article about some aspect of bardic culture’? Any kind of in universe media content? So here for that!
Spinning Silver: I’m a biracial mizrahi jewish woman so anything about Miryem and Judaism would absolutely unabashedly delight me. I’m also here for the Staryk King and Mirnatius striking up a friendship based on ‘I love my wife SO MUCH isn’t she AWESOME’ and also sarcasm.
A Little Princess: BIRACIAL (Desi Jewish) SARA CREWE. No honestly, that’s my feels. How does that change things, if in any way. Ralph Crewe/Mr Carrisford being a thing (you could absolutely add Sara’s mother and have a living OT3).

Sorry I didn’t mean a consensual relationship between two adults was wrong. I meant by pointing it out to show the even greater difference in experience between the adult man and teenager in the books. That while Daine is too young to be engaging in those relationships, she can clearly see that he is. Which means she’s entering into the relationship not only inexperienced as a teenager / power dynamics, but also that she doesn’t have the experience in navigating romantic relationships either
Thank you for clarifying!
Daine has had flirtations and kisses etc by the time of the fourth book. The nature of relationships is that someone is almost always going to have more experience in romance than someone else, so I did not personally see this as a problem. Whatever else we can say about the relationship, Numair didn't use his (apparently extensive) sexual experience to lord anything over Daine or manipulate her.
I'm not sure how I feel about Daine effectively taking the lead in the relationship- on the one hand it does put Numair in a better light, but on the other hand... it does purposely put Numair in a better light if he's not the one actively pursuing his former student, and as a rule that kind of thing is often used to excuse much squickier relationships. I suppose it helps that Numair's entire charm is being a slightly out of touch scholar, but again, this conundrum is something I've had to deal with a lot while reading The Immortals and in fact The Books of Pellinor, which feels cut from a similar mold, if that makes sense.
I ship Daine/Numair, and I ship Maerad/Cadvan. These are both relationships that, if written by other authors, I almost definitely would hate. Tamora Pierce and Alison Croggon managed to sell both for me.
And that honestly kind of bothers me lol. I suppose the saving grace is that everyone involved in these relationships acknowledges the possible gross dynamics and tries to deal with them in a mature manner...?
Anyway as always, some books are going to have Problems despite otherwise being good books. It's important to consider that while still considering the good parts. It's perfectly valid for anyone to find the problems in any book outweighs the good parts for them.
BUT if you're looking to read more Pierce, you in particular may enjoy the Circle of Magic books more.

Dear Yuletide Writer:
First off, I want to say thank you for writing me a story! This is such a fun challenge, and I'm looking forward to whatever you write. I know I'll love it, so don't stress too much! :)
I want to include a list of tropes I like, tropes I don't like, definite DNWs, and then individual blurbs about each fandom I've requested. Just as an overall note, I'd like for the fic to be a G or T rating - I have nothing against pwp (porn without plot) fic, that's just not what I'm looking for from Yuletide. :) If it is M in the way that doesn't involve sex, that would be okay, but I'd rather stick with a G or T if that jives with your vision.
Also, just because I've given an idea doesn't mean you have to write it! It's just a prompt, feel free to take them or leave them.
(I've never written a Yuletide letter before, so bear with me!)
Tropes I like:
Only one bed - when two people have to share a bed, it's the perfect opportunity for awkwardness, intimacy, and the general sharing of feelings. Good stuff!
Mistaken for a couple - when two people who like each other and aren't sure if the other does, it's fun when someone reads the vibes and makes the assumption.
Modern AUs of fantasy worlds, keeping the magic - there's something that really makes my brain buzz of modern aus of fantasy but they're still elves, or they're still dragons, or they can still cast spells. (Do note that I still love canon fics. Don't feel like you HAVE to write a modern au!)
Noble sacrifices - risking harm or death for someone else
Slice of life - especially if it's slice of life after the story concludes. But I love any and all slice of life.
Tropes I'm not huge on:
Soulmarks - any flavor of this. matching soulmarks, eyes that change color when you see your soulmate, first words on your wrist, etc etc
Modern AUs of fantasy worlds with no magic
Hogwarts/magical school AUs
Next gen fic
Werewolf AUs
DNWs:
please no spiders. I am afraid of spiders! I know some of these canons involve spiders, and I just ask that we avoid depiction of them here.
no explicitly shown/depictions of rape
incest, even in the background
no characters trying to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge

苍兰诀 | Love Between Fairy and Devil (TV)
Requested characters: Shangque, Jieli
I Love Them. Shangque is my favorite character in the drama in general - the combination of being very good at his job (being a dragon General, protecting the Moon Supreme) + good heart + some romance-related ineptitude makes for just a fantastic character, in my opinion. I know the fandom likes to call him a himbo, and he has his clueless moments, but the juxtaposition of the competence plus cluelessness is something I find fun. And he's sweet. :)
Jieli is such a fantastic counterpart to him - she's got a heart of gold, but circumstances have forced her to put up walls all around it. She's constantly lying, constantly trying to work behind the scenes to get herself ahead. And yet she does care -- she thinks it would be easier if she had no friends and cared for nobody, but the fact remains that she does care. Together, they make my brain go brr!
Ideas: Seeing them working together to accomplish a goal would be fun, or forcing Jieli to actually speak about her feelings. (Shangque confessing his feelings and forcing her to confront that would be fun too!) An angst-y fic set during the time they're apart late in the show is an idea. Another idea could be a fic set during the years Xiao Lanhua/Xiyun is waiting for Dongfang Qingcang to be reborn. How do they progress their relationship? I'm also down for other characters to be included in this fic, as long as the focus is on the two of them.
Pellinor - Alison Croggon
Requested characters: Maerad of Pellinor
The Books of Pellinor were my biggest book love growing up. The sense of vastness in the story, the wonderful characters, the lavish and evocative prose. Even when I reread it as an adult, it still holds up, in my opinion.
Maerad is the heart of the books. I love the journey she goes through, physically and emotionally. I love the real opening up and growth of her character. She feels like a real person, who is irrevocably changed by the end of the series. Yet though she goes through much, she never gives in completely to despair, and ends the series laughing and content. It's such a cathartic arc.
Ideas: I would love some epilogue fic for her, especially if it involves another character. Cadvan is a big one, but I would also love Hem, Silvia, Saliman, even Hekibel! (Especially Hekibel - I loved the frank conversation Maerad and Hekibel had in The Singing, and wished we'd had more of that. I felt like it was so refreshing to see Maerad interact with another woman, especially one who wasn't a Bard and had that very very human perspective.) Maerad/Cadvan is a ship I adore, so if you want to write that, I'd love that.
Ever - Gail Carson Levine
Requested characters: Kezi, Olus
I feel like this book is a dark horse when it comes to Gail Carson Levine's work. When I first read it as a tween, I honestly didn't care for it, but now as an adult, it really compels me. It feels like that quote that's "the gods have not been kind to us, but we rise to meet the stars anyway." I like the hope in the face of hopelessness about it.
Ideas: I'll admit that it's been a while since I've read this, so I'm really open for anything. I do think something that would be cool would be to switch POVs of certain scenes. I know the book does that to an extent, but it would be cool to take it even further, switching between the two characters or even to an outsider POV.
Wars of the Roses RPF
Requested characters: Marguerite d'Anjou | Margaret of Anjou (Wars of the Roses)
The Wars of the Roses is currently my historical fixation, and especially so its queens. I recently read Helen Maurer's excellent biography of Margaret of Anjou, and something that really struck me was how hard Margaret was working to both preserve the role of the English Queen and keep the monarchy intact while her husband was incapacitated. Because the Queen was always expected to be acting on her husband's behalf, she couldn't really... both take charge and yet be acting under supposed direction. But she still grabbed that challenge with both hands and really rose to the occasion, in my opinion, even to the point of taking on the war-laden parts of English Kingship. England had had warrior-queens before (Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians and Empress Matilda come to mind on first thought,) but this was incredibly late in the medieval period, and England had never been used to queens taking on this martial of an aspect before, in my opinion. I have an enormous amount of respect and admiration for her. She took an awful situation and really threw herself into making it work.
Ideas: She's somewhat enigmatic simply by virtue of the historical record being so far distant, but we do have a fair few of her letters, and one can get an idea of a very smart politically, a bit forceful woman. I'd love to explore the emotional side of her, perhaps during the periods when Henry VI was ill and she had to ensure both his, hers, and Prince Edward's safety. Another idea would be to explore her interactions with Anne Neville, simply because Anne Neville is another one of my historical blorbos and I would love that. Or Elizabeth Woodville! (Another blorbo. xD) Or delving into her relationship with Henry! Basically, I would really love something that put the focus on her emotional state and/or her relationships with others.
The Lord of the Rings Online
Requested characters: Candaith
LOTRO is my biggest most delightful discovery for the past few years. Best Lord of the Rings game, hands-down. It takes what's wonderful about the books and really runs with it -- I love the overarching theme of how people want to help each other, and generally they will try to do so as best as they can. And it's just so fun! Best adaptation of the Lord of the Rings, frankly.
And Candaith 😭 I love him. I love the tragedy of him, and I love the hope of him. The vision of him at the Fords never fails to make me cry. I feel like he's the first Ranger the player character really gets to know - there's other rangers in Bree-land, but it's always felt to me like I'm just running errands for them when we meet them first, and not actually getting to know them. (At first! I love Saeradan later, especially. But at first, I didn't really feel like we were friends.)
Ideas: How did he get the Weathertop posting? How did he interact with the others in the Lone Lands? How did he feel about his fellow Rangers, and did he have any special relationships with any of them? Did he ever get lonely for them? Was he ever at Annúminas, and how did he feel about it? Did he really think the restoration of the King was going to happen in his lifetime? Alternately: definitely not opposed to a fix-it of the whole Ring of Bebarahir situation.
* * *
Thank you so much! Happy Yuletide! I know I'll love the fic, so don't stress too much, and remember that you don't have to follow any of the prompts if they don't speak to you. :) Have fun writing! Thank you again!

Hey, what are the Books of Pellinor about? Should I read them?
*squeals in utter delight*
the Books of Pellinor is a YA fantasy epic written by Australian poet Alison Croggon. She’s mildly known for poetry over there, as well as what she writes with her playwright husband, who was knighted by the French for his plays.
most of that isn’t relevant, I just wanted you to know that. The series itself is four books and a prequel following a side character that is Actually worth a read and might be my favorite Pellinor book overall.
Here are the books:
Tumblr media
The plot follows a teenage slave in a mountain hamlet named Maerad. She’s known for weird things happening around her and is turned away from as a witch, but also bullied for the same reason. One day she finds a half-dead guy in the barn, but he swears she shouldn’t be able to see him, and because she can, she Should Not have ever ended up here. She runs away with him and tries to navigate the secret quest he was already on, powers that are targeting her specifically, a new world that she’s not used to, and resurfacing memories from her past that could change everything. More characters are introduced throughout the series, each book is a quest in a larger battle, and book three follows a separate character in a separate culture altogether.
One of THE BEST things about this series is the worldbuilding. It’s almost Tolkien-esque. Alison Croggon filled the ends of each book with appendixes and notes on the details and explanations of each aspect of culture or history she mentioned. She details the LANGUAGES, for goodness sake. In the world that it takes place (technically a sunken and forgotten continent on our world, but y’know), magic is deeply connected to music. People who have the ability to do the magic stuff are called Bards, and they play regular music, but also the fabric of the world is so deeply intertwined with music that it’s a HUGE theme in the books and in how magic operates. Larger cities in the civilization are called Schools, and are built in a circular ascending model. Each School fosters knowledge and students of magic. This is a lot more explored in the prequel imo, as in the original series the characters are too caught up in the action to see how the world functions on the regular.
The other thing that makes this series really stand out is the spectacular writing. Yes, it’s technically YA, but it’s not the snappy quick YA writing a lot of us associate with the genre. Alison Croggon is a poet, and that very much bleeds out in everything about the series. The world, the plot, the characters, and the writing.
Anyway, I absolutely adore her and would also highly highly recommend her middle grade books The River And The Book and The Threads of Magic.
