explaining mór and niall's divorce to a friend like, yeah they got divorced because they had differing opinions on infanticide, no the differing opinion wasn't whether or not to commit infanticide

mór: yeah it wanted me to bring it out of the forest
adam: are you SURE
mór: what do you MEAN am i SURE
adam: i mean. what if you could've achieved the same effect by, yknow, moving around some rocks and shit. like why did it have to be a baby. the last time i worked with one of these things it trade requested me taking a couple pebbles out of a stream and in return i got to summon lightning
mór:
adam: i just feel like there were a lot of other options for you ambition-wise. how was a baby supposed to help. i mean just speaking from personal experience but personally i myself would not have made cabeswater a baby
mór: it's not the same-
adam: no hey. ronan back me up. did you NEED to be a 2-year-old or could you just be like. a copse of trees rn
ronan: ...how.... tf.... should i know......?

time to eat a Few of my words. niall lynch may not be All bad.
ronan is a lot like niall. ronan is quite literally of niall. niall fills ronan with feelings. so many feelings ronan doesn’t know what to do with them all. they spill over & cause problems but also solve problems. in this way ronan lynch is a lot like his father.
the mirroring between the first chapter of greywaren and one of the last captures this mirrored life ronan and niall have.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
we start where we end, time being circular and all that. a new generation taking on the kingdom that is the barns. this time ronan and adam have a stronger love than mór and niall. this time they are both aware the barns are a temporary kingdom. a place to come back to but not to stay forever. both niall and ronan love the barns. adam and mór are both pulled away and a little piece of niall and ronan breaks because of it. but the beautiful thing about this mirror is that the reflection changes, the story changes. ronan is not a tragedy. ronan and adam are not doomed. they are meant to end up together. in the end it will always be “very good” for them. because ronan doesn’t want to get rid of his feelings, his memories. he feels everything, he remembers everything, he gains memories and in doing so gains his full self. ronan and niall are mirrors but niall always meant for his children to be better than he was even if that sentiment got lost along the way sometimes. ronan lynch is and is not his father. adam is and is not mór. the barns are paradise from beginning to end.

I read A Very Declan Christmas tonight. I noticed a few things, things that changed since the Niall scenes in Greywaren. Before and after Mór left.
1. Before Mór left, Declan laid in bed with Ronan to protect him. He wasn't afraid of Ronan at all. In the Christmas story, Declan watches Ronan sleep from a distance and throws things at him to wake him before he dreams.
2. Before Declan's parents were dreamers. Living dreams were part of the landscape he was raised in. He wasn't afraid of dreams. Not even Mór's dreams, which caused pain. In the Christmas story, Declan's afraid of Ronan's dreams, and he hates all dreams (or secrets, as he calls them.)
3. Before, Ronan and Declan played and goofed around together. In the Christmas Story, Declan is mostly just irritable at Ronan the whole time (which is why Ronan dreamt a replacement brother.)
4. Before, Mór would leave for periods of time to work for Boudicca. She must have been bringing home the money. Niall was mostly at home, dreaming cattle and looking after the Barns and the boys, except when he took the cattle to be slaughtered. After, Niall has started to travel to sell his dreams, leaving the boys alone with Aurora for long periods of time.
5. Before, Declan had a mother who wasn't always present, and wasn't particularly affectionate, and tended to get impatient; but also never faulted him for being serious or asked him to help clean up after other people's dreaming. (I'm very sure Mór would have made Niall clean up after himself.)
6. Ronan, on the other hand, had no relationship with Mór, except that she was both afraid of him, and abusive to him. Aurora was his true mother.
7. Nobody was particularly secret about dreaming before Mór left, and there was no real sense of danger, but after, everything was kept secret.
8. Before, Declan was quiet and serious and observant, but he seemed happy enough. In the Christmas story, he's tired and scared and irritable, and both jealous of and angry at Ronan.
When Declan is talking to Mór in Greywaren, he says he remembers when she left. I think what he's referring to is the conversation between Mór and Niall when she told Niall she was leaving. Mór talks about her fears about Ronan and his dreams. She says "what if he dreams up an army?" And she asks, "what if Boudicca gets ahold of him?" All of a sudden, Declan learns that Ronan is dangerous and dreams are dangerous and everything must be kept secret so Boudicca doesn't find out, and Mór is leaving because of all of this and she's not taking Declan with her.
Neither she nor Niall realize that Declan's been listening, because he's over organizing dandelion stems. The need to order his environment as a means of stress relief started early.
Aurora arrived the next day. Of course Declan would have noticed. Even the name was different. But all memories of Mór were expunged so that Niall wouldn't miss her, and Declan was expected to think of Aurora as his mother. And from Declan's POV, it was all Ronan's fault.
I used to think the rift between them started the day Ronan dreamt Matthew. It really started when Mór left.
