Mysterious Lotus Casebook 蓮花樓

Spicy goji and lotus seed soup

麻辣枸杞蓮子羹

Recipe from the official drama artbook

Prepare the lotus seeds* let it soak in water a little. Wash some rice** and put it in the pot covered with water up to half the pot, add the lotus seeds when the water is boiling. Let it stew on low heat. (Play with the dog a bit, weed the plants some) Add some dry chili, goji berries and rock sugar. Gulu*** a little and it's ready!

Personal Notes:

*I you use dry seeds, soak in water for the night, save the fragrant water for the soup, open the seeds to remove the sprout otherwise it will give a very bitter taste to your dish.

**just a handful, or it won't be a soup. I'd suggest using glutinous rice, it taste better for sweet soups, or at least round rice ("sushi rice")

***when it's boiling again

- Traditional Chinese Medicine would recommend serving this hot but it should be tasty as a cold treat as well.

- The title says 麻辣 so it implies the use of sichuan/mala pepper 花椒. You can try if you enjoy the taste. (I personally dislike it and that's my main issue with ShìChuan cuisine, I can't have the 辣🌶 without the abundance of 麻.)

- If you don't trust HuaHua's bìchá-poison-damaged eyesight "creativity", replace the chili with dry red date/jujube 紅棗 to make this dish more traditional.

- What's more difficult, fight scenes or spaking scenes? XSY says both and mentions how the opening sequence took 9 nights of filming for only a few minutes on screen.

- WHR agrees, although a lot of her fight scenes were cut out (and cut short by barely one move from LLH) and doesn't show the work she put in. Her talking scenes were very challenging, she didn't want to play her character as a villain. She's very happy that JLQ is so liked despite being an antagonist.

- WHR is then asked to show the difference between her laugh and Jiâo-jie's laugh, she seems very happy to replay the Since you keep refusing me playing nice with my advances, how about I make you my 幫主夫人? scene 🤭 (YáoYáo is surprised pikachu)

- What does XSY think of the way his fans dubbed him 戲裡/台上西北狼，內心/台下美羊羊 (Northwestern wolf on stage/screen; pretty sheep/softie off stage/in his heart)? He doesn't really agree, maybe the fans perceive him that way because he has a lot of pets (3 shiba dogs and used to have up to 4 cats) and thanks the fans for the love nonetheless.

- Asked for her opinion, WHR says that he is 外表西北狼，內心鐵漢柔情 (Northwestern wolf in appearance; "iron man with soft feelings" inside).

- WHR adds that, contrary to their characters in the drama, XSY is very gentle with her off screen and she understands why Jiâo-jie loves DFS so much.

- CYH (who has been quietly 吃瓜/吃狗糧 so far 😆) is asked for a reaction to the nice comments and welcome her character SXY received. She says that the story is so good, we all grew up to stories about heroes we want to resemble but later we learn that ordinary people are also very worthy and admirable. She thinks it's perfect understandable that SXY likes LLH. She's thankful to SXY for becoming the model of her childhood years.

@difeisheng has awoken some huáyû 華語* translation pet peeves of mine with this post and compelled the need to vent a little.

知己 has been translated to "soulmate" in subtitles, which -I understand- is short and convenient, and the (cdrama) fandoms ran with that, as fandoms do, bless them!

BUT

"Intimate friend" would be a more accurate, although I don't actually really mind the translation as " soulmates", it just lack nuances and the weight of amatonormativity too often reduces theses words to romantic (and carnal) bonds.

知己

to know - self: a person who understands me (sometimes better than myself).

紅粉知己

rouge - powder - to know - self: a (platonic) lady-best-friend to a man.

知音

to know - sound: a person who understands my tunes/melodies. An artistic soulmate bond, can be between an artist and a connoisseur or people who collaborate to create art, like a musician and a lyricist, two writers, a writer and a graphic artist... (I made a MDZS/The Untamed piece a while ago and already felt the need to explain).

Since we're at it:

緣，緣分

It's the karmic predestined affinity. Between people it can be any connection/relationship: family, friends, rivals even enemies. Without 緣 we would merely be strangers passing by each other.

姻緣

It's a type of 緣分 that leads to matrimony. The red thead that the matchmaker 月下老人 "Old Man Under the Moon" or 月老 YuèLâo ties to the pinkies of a predestined pair, a man and a woman, because of patriarchal heteronormativity but I know (at least in Taiwan) that anyone nowadays can ask for a good romantic relationship in a temple. (Some shrines to the 兔爺兒神 Rabbit deity for same gender relationships but it's not as widely known or accessible).

*instead of Chinese/Mandarin/HànYû choose the term 華語 Huáyû because it's what covers the best the diversity of the diaspora and learning speakers, without geographical/historical/ethnical restrictions.
