i switched concepts like three times before i settled on this. hope you enjoy :)

vampire!jihoon x reader | ambient, mild angst | 1k song: someday now - local natives

“I’m leaving.” He speaks the words into the night air, face tipped up towards the moon, and you feel them settle into you like barbed wire. Digging, clawing, scraping. 

Jihoon’s profile is lit by the night sky. You sit in the darkness, side by side—a spot on the hill overlooking the city below. A place you’ve sat in comfortable, companionable silence for the past few years. Easing into each other’s presence and realities. Words were not always necessary, neither of you were particularly loquacious, you just found that you each filled a missing spot in the other’s lives. For Jihoon you were a tether back to the mortal world, a white string shimmering through the dark and illuminating this life of blood and death he had found himself a part of. For you, he was a friend. An odd one, some might say. Beyond the fangs and absence of heartbeat, even. For what did you two have in common? A vampire and a human, two creatures on opposite ends of the light spectrum meeting in the shades of grey in between. It was simple to you, though–as easy as breathing–you just fit. 

You knew if you had met him before he was turned, you would have made a life together. Perhaps you would have met in a lecture hall, each finding a seat near the back and slowly over the course of weeks growing accustomed to each other’s company until finally the barrier of silence was broken. Study dates would have turned into coffee dates would have turned into dates at each other’s apartments. Heady kisses, heavy breathing. The night like a veil cast over your love, keeping you in each other’s arms as you drifted to sleep and woke with the sun kissing your skin. No fear with the dawn—simply a fact of life.

But life had a funny way of blocking these blessings. Of throwing a wrench into your carefully constructed plans and fantasies. 

“Why?” You ask, but you know. You know the answer. It was always there between you even as you dared to inch yourself closer to him. Unspoken like the hint of fangs hidden behind his lips, never bared to you–not even once. Now you think he may as well have–ripped open your flesh, bled you dry–it might have hurt less. Less than letting you get close, little by little allowing you into his world of the night against both of your better judgment. 

He sighs, shifting beside you and you know he’s doing it for your own benefit. He could have vanished within an instant. There’s nothing you would have been able to do about it, left sitting alone in the cold silence of the night–exposed to the stars above. “It’s too dangerous,” he says, a response you’ve heard before. 

Will you change me? 

It’s too dangerous,

Will you love me? 

It’s too dangerous,

You want to tell him that life is full of danger. That the only thing protecting you and anyone else from the claws and teeth is each other. Life is meant to be shared, Jihoon, you would say. Even a life such as your own. That the only real danger is to be so alone it becomes you. 

You don’t say it, though. You keep your lips pressed tight together and etch his profile into your memory. Tracing the curve of his cheeks, his lips, his nose into your mind to keep. You let your gaze wash over his body as he stands, lithe frame moving in a way no human can. These subtle moments that remind you of the reality of your friend. 

“Where will you go?” you ask, more out of an attempt to stall him. To keep him in your presence long enough to solidify him in your mind. 

He glances down at you, dark eyes meeting yours, and gives a half smile, “away. Please take care of yourself,” he says, “for me.” You want to laugh. A miserable, mirthless laugh. Instead you watch without word or noise as he turns to walk away, heart constricting with every step he takes, until you’re left alone. The peace of the night around you turns to a shroud and you know that he’s gone–the warmth of his eyes has left you to yourself. 

For the next month you return to your spot. You’re not sure why at first, maybe some blind hope that he might also be there. That his resolve had left him and that strange pull you felt towards each other had brought him back to you. After the first week, though, you start to return simply out of habit. A place to pour your silent sorrows out to the sky and let yourself wish. Wish that things had started or turned out differently, wish that they might change despite everything telling you that they weren’t going to. The night becomes a friend, as he had–your constant companion. You consider finding another vampire, bargaining with them to change you so you live the rest of your life at night, but Jihoon’s voice rings out through your mind, his face a silent admonition even before the thought fully forms and you abandon it. He was a friend to you, he cared in his own way, and you think the least you can do for him is listen. And take care of yourself. 

You resolve on your last night under the dark on the hill to thrust yourself into life–fully and completely. Live the life you mourned with him. Before leaving you tuck a letter in between the branches of a tree, for him but mostly for yourself. He said he was leaving–going away–and you had no reason to not believe him but some small part of you was still compelled to do this. You walk away, eyes lingering on the view that you two sat and watched together so often. 

It really was beautiful here at night, the lights of the city twinkling in the distance like a field of fireflies–alight and alive. Your heart swells as you walk, letting the light pull you back down. 

A hand reaches out in the darkness as you leave–bright white in the moonlight and cold as ice. Fingers tugging at the corner of the letter. A face melting back into the darkness, leaving you to the day with a small, sad smile tugging at the corners of his lips.

I've been struggling to write things longer than 500 words this year. You're a trooper for going so far!! Do you ever stop and feel like you've written enough, only to revise and write more? - aeris

i also have a very hard time writing anything long because it seems if i can't write it in one sitting i lose interest or i just cant follow through, but there are certain concepts and things that keep me going !

and ive found that sort of....haphazardly outlining it and then writing it as if the scenes are sort of their own interconnected but seperate stories helps me to compartmentalize it and it makes it a lot less intimidating. like okay ill just finish this scene today, instead of like...oh i have so much story still to write....

i havent gotten to the revision or editing part yet, i still have like a bulk of it to just write so it really feels like its neverending tbh fdjksafk i didnt anticipate this one being so long !! the longest fic ive written was 18k and idk this one might get close to that actually at this rate hfjdskafs (i might be overestimating it idk but the scenes are way longer than i planned for i just keep writing lol)

I'm a Pyro main, so Dragonspine isn't too bad for me. (Gotta also run VV for Kazuha now that I have him.) The worst as a Yanfei main was probably the CW domain with no ice or pyro units :')

oh yeah i run yoimiya in the dragonspine one. omg congrats on the kazuha and good luck with vv!! it's so fucking annoying i've been there for every anemo character since xiao's first fucking banner and still only have 1 actual em set that kazuha just hogs like i'm so over it ajfkljasdf

44: your favourite fantasy novel

i love fantasy so much as a concept, but there are so many bad fantasy books out there also that its hard for me to really find ones i love. i feel like it's a cop out to say tolkein, even though i do dearly love the lord of the rings (i think the real beauty in it though is greater than the books themselves tbh. more than the sum of its parts in a way)

ill go with a ya fantasy series that i really, really loved: a great and terrible beauty by libba bray. i think she's an incredibly underrated and genuinely excellent ya author. ive read two of her series' and i loved them both, and they both have strong fantasy elements (the other series being the diviners) and also incorporate historical fiction which i love. it's not high fantasy by any means, there are no dragons or castles or anything, but the world and the characters are so affecting. the third book is truly devastating. i remember being just completely blown away by i when i read it (granted it has been a while, but i was an adult when i read it so its not nostalgia from my teenage self talking at least LOL)

if we want to go high fantasy, then probably the once and future king by th white but that's a pretty bog standard rec HAHA classic fantasy
